Mountain Lion at Burton Valley?

While seeing a ton of Bobcats on campus at Burton Valley (Go Bobcats!) is commonplace, seeing mountain lions on campus is not.

On Wednesday, a resident reported seeing a small mountain lion roaming on the back of Burton Valley’s campus.

Lafayette Police, the Department of Fish and Game, and some of Burton Valley’s staff set out on a search to ensure the area was clear and safe around 9:50 a.m. By 10:15 a.m., Lafayette Police reported that the area was safe and clear, and students were able to leave classes and get back to recess.

Rheem Theatre going digital

The New Rheem Theatre was saved from extinction a few years ago thanks to the California Independent Film Festival Association’s commitment to keeping it alive. Their commitment remains strong, as the next step for the Rheem Threatre is an upgrade to digital.

Many major film studios will only be sending out their films in digital format in 2013, so the theaters have to make the change in order to show films from these studios.

At a cost of around $70,000 per screen to upgrade to digital, the initial plan is to upgrade the Zemrak Theater, which is one of the smaller upstairs theaters until they are able to raise enough funds to digitalize all theaters.

Saint Mary’s stars to face USA basketball

Former Saint Mary’s star Patty Mills and current Gaels star Matthew Dellavedova have been impressive for the Australian men’s basketball Olympic team, but they face their toughest test tomorrow when they meet the overwhelming gold medal favorite, the USA.

The Australians are huge underdogs and would need near perfect games from the two Gaels.

Mills is currently tied for the tournament lead in points per game with 20.6 and made a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against Russia.

Dellavedova is leading the Australian team with 4.6 assists per game. Once the Olympics conclude, Dellavedova will be heading back to Moraga for his senior season with the Gaels.

Stead Open back with new name

The construction taking place at the Moraga Country Club last year made it impossible for them to host the Stead Open tennis tournament. A year later, the tournament is back at the Moraga Country Club with a new name, The Heritage Bank of Commerce Tennis Championships.

The tournament starts with preliminary round matches on Aug. 7 and ends with the final scheduled for Aug. 12. The tournament features high cash prizes up to $25,000.

There are five different brackets in the tournament: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The tournament matches are free to watch and open to the public.

Woman charged with embezzling from Lafayette employer

Kristie Gale Meyer is facing federal charges for allegedly embezzling money from her employer Ansil Realty & Investment Co. Inc in Lafayette and KLP Properties Inc. in Walnut Creek.

According to a new release from U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, Meyer embezzled funds by using company checks to pay her credit card bills and then destroying copies of the checks. She also made deposits of company funds into personal online gambling accounts. Meyer would make fake accounting entries to cover up the funds.

Meyer was indicted on Thursday and is expected back in court on Aug. 20.

Caldecott’s fourth bore almost clear

Construction crews working on the Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore project are within a few hundred feet of connecting Orinda and Oakland. Caltrans has estimated that the two ends of the tunnel will connect at some point next week when crews clear the last part of the 3,389-foot tunnel.

With the major portion of the project, the digging, out of the way, crews will now focus on the tunnel’s two-foot thick support shell, laying in the road and other finishing projects.

The fourth bore is still scheduled to be open to traffic in late 2013. Caltrans believes the addition of the fourth bore will help clear up traffic in a location that is backed-up regularly.
