James Collin, 62, of Orinda, pleaded not guilty today to the murder charges against him in the killing of his girlfriend, Evangeline Cumbe Devera, on June 26 in their Orinda home. The prosecutor also added a count of torture to the charges against Collin, which he also pleaded not guilty to. If Collin is convicted of the charges against him, he could face the death penalty.
An interesting turn in the case came today when the prosecutor entered into evidence the Nov. 1, 1986 police report of the accidental killing of Tim Mark Collin by his brother James Collin in the same home that James Collin allegedly killed Devera in. Police at the time ruled it as an accidental shooting, citing an unplanned gun discharge, but those close to the Collins are speaking out now that they don’t believe the 1986 shooting was an accident.
