Fatal crash in Lafayette

Lafayette Police received reports of reckless driving on Pleasant Hill Road around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. When police responded, they found that the vehicle had crashed into a tree and a utility pole, sparking a fire.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Silverman, 28, of Concord, was rushed to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office.

Southbound Pleasant Hill Road was closed down to traffic while police investigated the crash. According to PG&E, 651 customers lost power when the vehicle crashed into the utility pole.

Gay Moraga boy scout denied Eagle honor and kicked out of troop

Ryan Andresen, of Moraga, has made it into the national news after recently being denied the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout due to him being openly homosexual.

Andresen has successfully completed all Eagle Scout requirements, including his final project, which was installing an anti-bullying wall at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, but Troop 212 will not honor him.

Andresen’s membership in the Boy Scouts was also revoked when his sexuality was made public.

Andresen’s mother, Karen, started an online petition on to fight for her son to receive his Eagle Scout honor. The petition has over 250,000 signatures already. Andresen’s story is also trending on social media across the internet.

Matadors knock off Dons

The Miramonte High School football team kept themselves in the playoff hunt with a win in what the Matadors were calling a “must-win” game Friday night against Acalanes.

Despite playing at Acalanes, Miramonte looked like the home team early, dominating play in the first half to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

A 90-yard passing touchdown midway through the third quarter gave the Matadors a 21-0 lead.

The Dons made a valiant comeback attempt by scoring touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough, losing by a final score of 21-14.

With the win, the Matadors improved to 3-4 overall (1-2 DFAL). The Dons fell to 4-2 overall (1-2 DFAL).

Acalanes volleyball coach, Burton Valley aide arrested

Nicholas Daniel Kalustian, 22, of Martinez, was arrested Friday on suspicion of unlawful sexual conduct with a student, according to police. Kalustian has been working as the JV girls volleyball coach at Acalanes High School and an instructional aide at Burton Valley Elementary School. He has been placed on administrative leave by both schools.

Kalustian was arrested after police were made aware of an alleged relationship between he and a female high school student. The student does not attend Acalanes.

Kalustian was taken to Martinez Detention Facility where he is facing $100,000 bail.

Join in on the “Gaelebration”

Saint Mary’s College is celebrating what they are calling “The Year of the Gael” this Saturday, Oct. 6, with a large “Gaelebration.”

The school is hosting a large festival and open house to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The celebration will take place all over the school’s Moraga campus from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The festival will include live music and dance performances, athletic demonstrations and lectures, featuring the school’s students and faculty. There will be food trucks on site for plenty of lunch options. The festival will be very family-friendly with lots of rides and activities for children.

The festival is free and open to the public.

Oktoberfest in Moraga

The Town of Moraga’s Fourth Annual Oktoberfest celebration will take place next Sunday, Oct. 14, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m, at the Hacienda de las Flores, 2100 Donald Drive, Moraga.

Oktoberfest will feature authentic German food and beverages, lots of activities for kids, and live music and dancing throughout the event. There will also be a free costume photo booth available.

Admission to Oktoberfest is $5 for adults and free for children. All proceeds from the event go to the Hacienda Foundation.

Brett Olson death ruled accidental

According to the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office, the autopsy report for Brett Olson’s death reported that the cause of death was accidental. The report stated that Olson had drowned with alcohol and cocaine in his system.

Olson’s blood alcohol content registered as .28 percent, but it was noted that it could have been closer to .23 percent at the time of his death. The legal limit is .08 percent.

According to the report, there were no signs of trauma on the body or any other indications that would make the death anything other than an accident.

Olson, a 2010 graduated of Acalanes, went missing over Labor Day weekend during a river float near Chico State University. He was found a week later by fishermen.

High school football update

The Campolindo High School football team continued their recent dominance over rival Miramonte on Friday night, beating the Matadors, 35-14. The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and never trailed in the game. The Cougars are 5-1 (2-0 DFAL), and the Matadors are 2-4 (0-2 DFAL).

Acalanes needed a last minute dramatic touchdown to earn a win over Las Lomas, 21-17. After falling behind late, the Dons drove all the way down the field in two minutes to score the game-winning touchdown with 42 seconds left. The Dons are 5-1 (1-1 DFAL).

Miramonte travels to play at Acalanes on Friday. Campolindo has the week off and will play Las Lomas in their next game on Oct. 12.
