Saint Mary’s students respond to alleged sex crimes on campus

The campus of Saint Mary’s College was not its typically quiet self Wednesday, as more than 100 students and faculty members met for a rally responding to the two recent reports of rape of female students at the school.

The rally encouraged students to be more open with discussions about sexual assault, in order to help prevent further cases at the school and beyond.

Organizers of the rally hoped that the event would show the victims that they are supported. They also hoped that the event would help bring sexual assault education into the forefront of campus discussion.

Another rape reported at Saint Mary’s

The second reported rape has come out of Saint Mary’s College in the past two weeks. A female student called police around 6:00 p.m. Sunday reporting that she had been raped by a male student and a friend of the student. Police are conducting interviews and investigating the reported crime.

This report of rape follows a report of rape by another Saint Mary’s College female student. That female student reported being raped by a male student on Sept. 11. Police made an arrest in the case, but the suspect was let go, as the District Attorney is awaiting more evidence.

The Moraga Police Department is actively investigating both reported crimes.

Merrick arraignment pushed back

Michael Merrick’s arraignment, which was scheduled for today, was pushed back until Sept. 8, as a result of Merrick’s attorney being unable to be present.

Merrick’s attorney, Elizabeth Grossman, has been visiting the East Coast and has been unable to return due to canceled travel plans from the effects of Hurricane Irene.

On Aug. 12, Judge Nancy Davis Stark determined there was enough evidence against Merrick to proceed to trial on 25 felony counts and one misdemeanor charge relating to an alleged sexual relationship Merrick had with a student he was tutoring in his Stanley Middle School classroom.

Merrick going to trial

Michael Merrick, or Mr. Merrick as many in the community knew him for years, will face trial on 25 felony sex crime charges.

Judge Nancy Davis Stark determined in court today that the evidence against Merrick was enough to proceed to trial, citing DNA evidence, phone and text records, police reports and interview transcripts.

Merrick, who was a popular teacher at Stanley Middle School until his arrest, is facing charges related to his alleged sexual relationship with a student he was hired to tutor privately in his classroom.

The prosecutor in the case, Deputy District Attorney Johanna Schonfield, also made mention in court Friday that there may be previous victims of Merrick; however, no additional charges relating to another situation have been filed.

Miller pleads not guilty

Carl Blake Miller, an Orinda man formerly in charge of a real estate investment group, pleaded not guilty today to nine felony counts against him, including embezzlement, forgery and filing false documents.

Miller is believed to have embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients of Geneva Real Estate Investments. There is believed to be more than 175 victims of Miller’s crimes.

Miller is also accused of taking $16,000 from Orinda’s Boy Scout Troop 327. Although Miller returned the money, the original taking of the money is still a felony crime.

Miller is due back in court on September 22.

Former Orinda police chief takes his talents to the North Bay

Chief William French mug.JPGRetirement apparently did not sit well with Bill French. The former Orinda police chief, who stepped down just over a year ago, has landed a job with the Cotati Police Department, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports:

William French, a 26-year veteran with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department, has been hired as a police lieutenant, filling a position that has been vacant for several years.

As the department’s only lieutenant, French will be second-in-command to Chief Michael Parish. French will earn $88,000 a year. The small department has two sergeants and six officers.

French has been a watch commander and a contract Chief of Police in Orinda, and worked in undercover narcotics and with a special services team targeting high-crime areas.

With 7,265 residents, Cotati — just south of Rohnert Park and likely best known as where you get off the freeway on your way to Sonoma State University — is about half the size of Orinda and, I’m assuming, has fewer leaf blower problems as well.
