Arrests at Lafayette massage parlors

Arrests were  made at two different massage parlors in Lafayette today, according to police. The crimes those arrested are being charged with have not yet been released.

The arrests come just two weeks after the City of Lafayette passed an ordinance stating that all massage therapists and practitioners be required to have state certification.

The issue came into discussion at the city level after a number of residents reported alleged illegal activity happening at the massage parlors in their neighborhoods. The issue of illegal activity in Lafayette’s massage parlors has plagued the city in the past.

Fire in Lafayette

Fire crews are currently fighting a fire on Quail Ridge Road in Lafayette, according to the Contra Costa Fire District.

The fire was originally reported to be a vegetation fire, but Contra Costa Fire District has confirmed that a shed in the yard of one of the homes on the road has also caught fire.

No additional details have been reported yet, as firefighters are currently fighting the one-alarm blaze.

Motorcyclist down on Highway 24

A motorcyclist collided with a truck this morning on Highway 24, sending the motorcycle and its driver crashing to the ground, according to California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP, the driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken from the scene in an ambulance. No injuries were reported for the driver of the truck.

The crash happened shortly before 9:00 a.m. on westbound Highway 24 near the Pleasant Hill exit. The crash and resulting medical and police attention has one lane blocked. The one lane closure slowed down morning commute traffic, but traffic seems to be flowing back to normal at this time.

2012 Lafayette Summer Series

The City of Lafayette is looking to improve on their successful summer series events of the past with events taking place every Friday night June 15-August 24 in Lafayette Plaza, located at the corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Moraga Road.

Fridays in June will be “Dancing in the Plaza” from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a different kind of music each Friday.

Fridays in July will be “Movies in the Plaza,” starting at dusk, with a movie playing outside on a big screen.

Fridays in August will be “Rock the Plaza” from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a variety of concerts.

Free outdoor classes

The Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Education Center, located across from the Lafayette Reservoir, is offering a series of free classes starting tomorrow, Saturday, June 2.

All classes are free, open to the public, educational and fun for all ages. The classes are interactive, so participants should be prepared to get a little dirty in the garden.

Classes available:
June 2 – 3-5pm – The Creekside Ecosystem
July 14 – 3-5pm – Bugs: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!
August 4 – 3-5pm – California Edibles and What Native Americans Ate
September 29 – 3-5pm – Winter Gardens

Lafayette Bank of America robbed

The Bank of America located at 3530 Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette was robbed Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 p.m.

The man entered the bank, presented a cashier with a note and escaped the scene likely on foot, according to the Lafayette Police Department.

Lafayette Police searched the area for the suspect and stopped BART trains to search the BART station, but they were unsuccessful in locating the suspect.

Anyone with information that could help police in their investigation are being asked to call the Lafayette Police Department at 925-299-3230.

Lafayette Farmers Market is back

The Lafayette Farmers Market is back and ready to stay. The “new” Lafayette Farmers Market will be holding its opening day on Sunday, June 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The new schedule for the Lafayette Farmers Market will be a year-round market that will take place every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The location of the market has also changed from Lafayette Plaza to the south parking lot of the Lafayette BART station off of Happy Valley Road, which should help clear up some of the parking and traffic issues.

As part of the opening day celebration, visitors to the Farmers Market on June 10 will receive free flower and produce seed packets.

Results of Springhill Blood Drive in Memory of Rachael Wenger

The Red Cross blood drive that was held at Springhill Elementary School in Lafayette in memory of Rachael Wenger collected 45 units of blood from 54 people who registered. The blood drive last year collected 42 units of blood.

Five additional people have donated blood to the cause by going to the blood center in Pleasant Hill, and Rachael’s family is asking that anyone who would like to support the cause do the same.

Sully is coming to Lafayette

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who famously safely landed his plane on the Hudson River, will be in Lafayette on Monday, May 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., for a lecture and discussion on the qualities of leadership.

Sullenberger recently published a book on the topic of leadership called “Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America’s Leaders.”

The event, which is sponsored by the Commonwealth Club of California, will be held at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Hall.

Cost is $20 for general admission, $12 for Commonwealth members and $7 for students.

13th Annual Lafayette Kitchen Tour

The Lafayette Juniors are sponsoring the 13th Annual Lafayette Kitchen Tour on Saturday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year’s tour will feature six new or remodeled kitchens spanning a variety of styles.

Tickets for the event are $40 ($30 of which is tax-deductible). Proceeds from ticket sales benefit Shelter, Inc., which provides low-income families in Contra Costa County with counseling, education and affordable housing options.
