Home values on the rise

Home values in the Bay Area made a large leap in the second quarter, according to Zillow.com, which perhaps signals the turn of the housing market.

The Bay Area, as a whole, saw a 2.5% increase in property values, although Contra Costa County saw a slightly lower increase at 1.4%. While the report did not have a specific percentage increase for the Lamorinda area, an expert estimated the increase for the area near 2% for the second quarter.

As home values increase, more sellers will be willing to put their homes on the market, which will help turn the real estate market around.

Campolindo named California Division 3 Sports School of the Year

Campolindo was recently named the California Division 3 Sports School of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. The Cougars also won the award last year, making them repeat winners.

The Cougars athletic excellence from last year carried over with an improbable run by the football team that saw them crowned as NCS champions before narrowly falling in the CIF Division III State Bowl Game.

The Campolindo cross country teams each finished fourth in the state meet with Carrie Verdon winning the state’s individual honors.

Boys swimming, boys volleyball and baseball all won NCS titles during the spring season as well, with the boys swimming and baseball teams being ranked near the top in the state all season long.

Graduation rates at local high schools

Graduation and dropout rates for 2011′s high school graduating class were recently released by the state, broken down by district and school.

The Acalanes Union High School District managed to improve their already high graduation rate from 95.4% in 2010 to 96.3% in 2011. The AUHSD dropout rate decreased from 3.3% in 2010 to 1.8% in 2011.

Campolindo had the highest graduation rate in the district at 99.39% for 2011, while Miramonte (97.92%) and Acalanes (97.21%) also had impressively high graduation rates, which has become expected of the district’s schools.

The dropout rate was equally impressive, as there were only two recorded dropouts total between the three schools with Campolindo and Acalanes having one each and Miramonte having  none for the class of 2011.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July to all of the readers of the Lamorinda Sun blog!

The festivities have already kicked off in Moraga and Orinda this morning with a pancake breakfast, a parade and a variety of games and activities for children.

The weather is great and supposed to stay this way all day for all of the events and barbecues.

One of the most traditional events in the Lamorinda area takes place tonight, as Lamorindans gather at the Moraga Commons and Moraga Country Club to enjoy picnic dinners and watch the fireworks show. The fireworks are scheduled to go off around 9:30 p.m., so make sure you go early and get a good seat.
