Former Moraga 24 Hour Fitness worker found guilty

Pornthep Suvanasarn, a former employee at the 24 Hour Fitness in Moraga and former Saint Mary’s College student, was convicted Thursday of indecent exposure, and annoying or molesting a child. The charges stem from an incident where he exposed himself to a 5-year-old boy while working in the 24 Hour Fitness child care center.

Suvanasarn was also charged with the same two crimes in connection to a 5-year-old girl, but the jury acquitted Suvanasarn on those charges.

The Moraga School Board voted Tuesday night to take a major step in rebuilding its image after the negative light it has received due to the sex abuse scandal of the 1990s becoming public recently.

The School Board voted, 4-0, in favor of creating a new committee that will review the current policies relating to child abuse and mandated reporting. After reviewing the current policies, the committee will come back to the School Board to recommend changes and additions to the policies.

Moraga woman injured in Marin crash

Christine Walwyn, 62, of Moraga, was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after she was involved in a car accident in Marin tonight.

According to California Highway Patrol, Walwyn’s Honda Civic crossed into oncoming traffic, causing a police officer driving his patrol car to veer to avoid a head-on collision. The front left sides of the cars collided, sending the patrol car down into a ditch and into a tree. The police officer in the patrol car was stuck inside the car for approximately 30 minutes.

Neither Walwyn nor the police officer were believed to have any major injuries as a result of the crash. A CHP spokesperson said they do not believe alcohol played a role in the crash.

New sports facility for Saint Mary’s?

Saint Mary’s College is in the process of seeking approval to build what would be a state of the art sports complex at the Moraga campus. The proposed plan includes a 60,000-square-foot fitness facility, a 95-by-150-foot swimming pool, and a 950-seat “stadium” to go with the school’s new baseball field.

Prior to starting the building of the new facilities, the school must first be granted with six different permits and complete a California Environmental Quality Act determination.

The project is scheduled to be discussed in detail at the July 2 Moraga Planning Commission meeting.

The new facilities would be huge selling points for recruits for the Gaels’ athletic programs and would also likely draw more local fans to games.
