Enjoy music in Lafayette on April 20

The Contra Costa Performing Arts Society will be holding a Jazz Piano Workshop  on Friday, April 20, 1:30-2:30 p.m., at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center. The event costs $3 for members of Lafayette’s Senior Services and $5 for non-members. Call (925) 284-5050 to RSVP for the event.

The Big Band Ball Room Dance & Show will take place April 20, starting at 8:00 p.m., at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building. The 31-piece big band will be performing throughout the night. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce office. Unsold tickets will also be available at the door of the event.

Orinda Idol Auditions

Auditions for the Orinda Idol 2012 competition are coming up in May with registration starting on April 1.

What started as a small competition for Orinda students has become a major competition for students throughout the entire Lamorinda area.

Auditions will take place May 17-19 at Orinda Intermediate School:

K – 2nd grade soloists: Thursday, May 17, 2012, 4 – 7 pm

3rd – 5th grade soloists: Friday, May 18, 2012, 4 – 7 pm

6th – 8th grade soloists: Saturday, May 19, 2012, 9 – 11 am

9th – 12th grade soloists: Saturday, May 19, 2012, 11 am – 12 noon and 4 – 5 pm

K – 5th grade groups: Saturday May 19, 2012, 1 – 2 pm

6th – 12th grade groups: Saturday, May 19, 2012, 2 – 4 pm

Lafayette Chorus Festival

The Lafayette School District’s student choruses will be coming together this Thursday night for one big chorus festival. The festival will take place at the Acalanes High School Performing Arts Center starting at 7:00 p.m.

Fifth-grade choruses from all of the elementary schools, the Stanley Middle School chorus and some select high school student groups will all be performing at the event. The night will end with all of the groups singing two songs on stage together.

The event is free to attend and is open to the public. Make sure to arrive early to ensure you can find a parking spot and a seat.

2012 Lafayette Jazz Festival

The 2012 Lafayette Jazz Festival is taking place throughout this weekend at the Acalanes Performing Arts Center.

The J. Kyle Gregory Quartet will kick it off Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with the help of the Stanley Jazz Messengers.

The Realistic Orchestra will be the headliners for Saturday night’s show at 7:30 p.m. The Acalanes Jazz Ensemble will also perform at the Saturday night show.

The Contra Costa County Honor Jazz Bands, comprised of talented local student musicians, will perform a special matinee show on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce office, 100 Lafayette Circle.

Local music update

The Campolindo Orchestra will be performing a show called “Concierto de Aranjuez,” on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m., at the Campolindo Performing Arts Center. The show is free and open to the public. Mr. Benstein, the instrumental music director at Campolindo, has announced his retirement, so this will be one of his final shows.

The Virginia Glee Club, one of the top male choruses in the nation, will be performing at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, March 6, at 8:00 p.m. They will be performing a large variety of music, ranging from sacred music to Glee Club classics. The event is open to the public, and donations will be accepted by the group.

Once Upon a Mattress

Some of the top performing arts students at Acalanes High School will be performing “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical based off of the story “The Princess and the Pea.” Shows will take place Feb. 29 and March 1, 2 and 3. All shows will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Acalanes Performing Arts Center on campus.

General admission tickets are $16, and student and senior tickets are $14. Tickets can be purchased at Acalanes High School, at the door of any show 30 minutes before the start of the show, or ahead of time online.

All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Acalanes Performing Arts Boosters Choral Program.

Beat on the drum

The Moraga Library will be hosting a community drumming session tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 9, at 4:00 p.m.

Jeni Swerdlow, a local percussionist and art therapist, will be leading the event. Swerdlow has a ton of experience in the area, having done several hundred interactive, rhythmic events across the country and the globe.

The event is open to the public, but those attending the event need to register in advance at the library or via the library’s website at http://ccclib.org.

This event will be targeted more towards children; however, people of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Big Band at the Rheem Theatre

The Big Band of Rossmoor will be performing at the Rheem Theatre this Friday, Feb. 3, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The band, which features 31 musicians ranging in age from 10 to 92 years old, has become a local favorite over recent years.

Dance instructor Gail Enright will kick off the night at 7:00 p.m. with a dance lesson to get everyone ready to dance the night away.

Tickets to the event are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance at the Rheem Theatre’s Box Office or the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce office. Tickets will also be sold at the door while they last.

A Capella at Campolindo

The Campolindo High School Chamber Choir singers will be performing an A Capella Showcase concert on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will take place in the Campolindo Performing Arts Center on campus. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door beginning at 6:45 p.m. All seating is general admission and is first come first served.

A dessert reception will follow the concert for all in attendance.

The concert will feature a variety of modern popular songs all done in the style of a capella.

Free local music

The Moraga Library is hosting the acoustic quintet, Houston Jones, on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7:00 p.m. The group plays a blend of folk and blues with high energy, hoping to get the audience dancing. The show is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required at http://www.ccclib.org.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2:00 p.m., the Moraga Library is hosting Ben Ofori and the Bodac Cultural Group, a performing group originally from West Africa who combine music and dancing.

The Class Act Big Band is playing for free in the Soda Center at Saint Mary’s College on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. There is also a free dance lesson before the show, starting at 6:00 p.m.
