Three of Orinda’s Boy Scouts became Eagle Scouts this month as part of a ceremony, known as the Court of Honor, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Mikk Eerik Otsmaa’s Eagle Scout project was to build an arbor for the garden at the Orinda Senior Village. Otsmaa is a senior at Miramonte.
Brandt Martin Sheets, also a senior at Miramonte, remodeled the playground area at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He also fixed several doors at the church.
Sukhraj Bains, a freshman at USC, built informational signs and kiosks for display in the Wagner Ranch Nature Area.
The boys are all a part of Troop 303.

The construction on the Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore is expected to be finished in mid-2013 with the fourth bore opening up to traffic in late-2013. The fourth bore will allow for two bores to be open in each direction at all times, helping to counteract reverse commute traffic.
The two crews boring from each side of the hill have met, connecting the tunnel from Orinda to Oakland.
Crews are currently working on digging out the lower part of the tunnel. That section, known as the bench, is where the pavers will come in and lay down road.
The Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore construction is being done at a cost of $391 million.

The giant mural at the Orinda BART station is likely leaving the BART station and heading to a different location in Orinda.
The Orinda Historical Society, owners of the mural, have asked the city for permission to move the mural.
A new location for the mural has not yet been finalized; however, its likely new destination will be somewhere near Orinda’s Community Park.
The empty space at BART will be filled with new public art, as well as some new BART-related signs.

The Miramonte football team had a dominating performance in their first round NCS Divison 3 playoff game Saturday night. The fifth-seeded Matadors beat the 12th seed, Tennyson, 42-7.
The Matadors dominated the game from the start, as they cruised to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and a 35-0 halftime lead. A third quarter touchdown was all Tennyson could muster, but it was not nearly enough.
With the win, the Matadors advance to the quarterfinals where they will play the fourth seed, Encinal, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Encinal. The Matadors overall record improved to 10-1 with their first round win, with their only loss coming at the hands of undefeated Campolindo.

Even with an extra hour of sleep, 6 a.m. is still way too early for me to be up on a weekend. Luckily, my trusty DVR was there to record CBS’ Sunday Morning, which featured a short segment on efforts across the country to ban leaf blowers, including the one by Quiet Orinda.
CBS’ John Blackstone interviews Orinda residents Peter and Susan Kendall, Maya McBride and Henry Penny to learn more about the battle over blowers and make us all jealous of the Kendalls’ balcony.
Here’s the link to the segment, because WordPress apparently hates embedded videos.
