Room Service in Orinda

The Orinda Village Starlight Players will be presenting the play “Room Service” from July 20 through Aug. 11.

Shows will take place on Fridays and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. during the play’s run. There will also be a show on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 4:00 p.m., and a show on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 8:00 p.m.

All shows will take place in the outdoor theater at the Orinda Community Park, 26 Orinda Way.

Tickets are $16 for general admission and $8 for seniors and children. Tickets can be purchased at the box office before a show or in advance by calling 925-528-9225 or emailing info@orsvp.org.

“Spunk” at Cal Shakes

The California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) in Orinda is currently presenting the play “Spunk” through July 29.

“Spunk” features three of Zora Neale Hurston’s poetic tales intertwined into a play adapted by George Wolfe. The play focuses on African-American life during the early 1900s and the bluesy setting that was developed.

During the play’s run, shows start at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. There is also a 2:00 p.m. show on Saturday, July 28.

Arts in Bloom…In the Park

The Orinda Arts Council is presenting the event Arts in Bloom…In the Park on Tuesday, July 17, at the Orinda Community Park, 26 Orinda Way.

The event will start at 5:00 p.m. with a variety of art exhibits on display in the park. There will be activities and games for children to participate in. A silent auction with a variety of items from the art and food worlds will take place throughout the night as well.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., the Orinda Idol finalists will be performing live in the park. Finalists from kindergarten through high school will be giving a sneak preview of September’s Orinda Idol finals.

Orinda man charged with murder

James Collin, 62, was charged with murder Thursday in the killing of his longtime girlfriend in their Orinda home on Tuesday.

Collin’s girlfriend, 56-year-old Evangeline Cumbe Devera, died from ”blunt force and sharp force injury,” according to the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement officials have reported that the death came following a machete attack on the victim.

An enhancement for use of a deadly weapon will be applied to the count of murder.

Collin is being held on $1 million bail. His next scheduled date in court is July 9.

Bail set for Orinda murder suspect

The man accused of killing his girlfriend in their home in Orinda on Tuesday is being held on $1 million bail at the County Detention Center.

According to police, the suspect, James Collin, 62, killed his girlfriend, then went to a neighbor’s house and forced the neighbor to call 9-1-1. When police arrived, Collin led them to the body of his girlfriend in the kitchen of their home.

The sheriff’s office reported the cause of death as ”blunt force and sharp force injury of head.” A source reported to the Bay Area News Group that the weapon used in the murder was a machete.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

Homicide in Orinda

According to police, a 51-year-old woman was killed in a home in Orinda today, while the man that lived with her was taken into custody.

Police responded to the home on the 600-block of Moraga Way after a neighbor called to report the murder. A voice was heard in the background of the 911 call feeding the caller information. Police say the voice in the background of the call was the man who was later taken into custody.

When police arrived on scene, the suspect met them from the neighbor’s home and once taken into custody told police he had “killed her.”

Police have not released the names of the victim or the suspect at this time.

Summer concerts

Orinda Summer Concerts in the Park will be every Tuesday night this summer, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Orinda Community Park. The first concert is this coming Tuesday, June 12.

The 2012 Summer Concert Series at the Moraga Commons starts on Thursday, June 21, with the band Moonalice. The concerts will be every Thursday night this summer, from6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

All concerts at both locations are free and open to the public. Concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on and enjoy the music. Both locations have food for sale, but you can also bring a picnic dinner.

Man dies in Orinda crash

Nathaniel Greenan, 37, of Pleasant Hill, died Wednesday as a result of his injuries from his vehicle crashing.

Greenan was driving westbound on Highway 24 east of Camino Pablo shortly after 11:30 a.m. when his vehicle veered off the right side of the highway and crashed head on into a tree, according to police.

Greenan died as a result of the crash, but a dog in the vehicle survived.

Witnesses stated that they saw Greenan’s vehicle driving erratically prior to the accident.

The reason for the crash is currently under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it should contact the CHP Contra Costa field office at 925-646-4980.

Community service in Moraga and Orinda

There are community service options in Moraga and Orinda on Saturday, April 21, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

In Orinda, residents can participate in Orinda in Action: A Community Service Day with the focus being on a project at Sleepy Hollow School. Registration for the event will start at 8:30 a.m. that morning at Orinda Library Plaza. The first 300 people to sign up will get free t-shirts with free coffee and bagels being available to all who participate.

In Moraga, residents can participate in the annual Moraga Beautiful event, which will be a clean-up of Rancho Laguna Park. The town will supply all tools and equipment needed to help in the clean-up process.

Five new Eagle Scouts in Orinda

Orinda’s Boy Scout Troop 303 held their most recent Court of Honor on March 25 at the Orinda Community Center to honor five new Eagle Scouts.

The new Eagle Scouts are Philip Hoxie, Eric Liu, Charles Ross, Conor Whatley and Timothy Witbeck.

Ross and Hoxie are juniors at Miramonte High School, while Witbeck is a senior at the school. Whatley is a senior at Bentley School, and Liu is a freshman at Cal.

In order to become Eagle Scouts, the boys all had to complete community service projects as their final requirement. These five boys’ projects included building a picnic table for Save Mt. Diablo’s Mangini Ranch Property and for Orinda’s Christian Science Church and building benches for the Contra Costa Gospel Church.
