St. Mary’s sports update

The St. Mary’s men’s soccer team comes into the season ranked 18th in the nation coming off the heels of their dramatic run last season that saw them win the WCC and come within a game of the Final Four. The Gaels beat UNLV, 2-1, in their season opener and face Sacramento State today.

The St. Mary’s women’s soccer team is off to a 2-2 start. The Gaels have looked good in their two wins over Portland State, 2-0, and Sam Houston State, 1-0, but struggled in two tough road losses to Seattle and USC, losing 5-1 and 4-1. The Gaels play later today against Texas A&M.

The St. Mary’s women’s volleyball team opened up the season against two of the top teams in the nation in Hawaii and Stanford. The Gaels lost those two games but bounced back with wins over Albany and Morgan State in their next two games.

Saint Mary’s stars to face USA basketball

Former Saint Mary’s star Patty Mills and current Gaels star Matthew Dellavedova have been impressive for the Australian men’s basketball Olympic team, but they face their toughest test tomorrow when they meet the overwhelming gold medal favorite, the USA.

The Australians are huge underdogs and would need near perfect games from the two Gaels.

Mills is currently tied for the tournament lead in points per game with 20.6 and made a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against Russia.

Dellavedova is leading the Australian team with 4.6 assists per game. Once the Olympics conclude, Dellavedova will be heading back to Moraga for his senior season with the Gaels.

Stead Open back with new name

The construction taking place at the Moraga Country Club last year made it impossible for them to host the Stead Open tennis tournament. A year later, the tournament is back at the Moraga Country Club with a new name, The Heritage Bank of Commerce Tennis Championships.

The tournament starts with preliminary round matches on Aug. 7 and ends with the final scheduled for Aug. 12. The tournament features high cash prizes up to $25,000.

There are five different brackets in the tournament: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The tournament matches are free to watch and open to the public.

Campolindo named California Division 3 Sports School of the Year

Campolindo was recently named the California Division 3 Sports School of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. The Cougars also won the award last year, making them repeat winners.

The Cougars athletic excellence from last year carried over with an improbable run by the football team that saw them crowned as NCS champions before narrowly falling in the CIF Division III State Bowl Game.

The Campolindo cross country teams each finished fourth in the state meet with Carrie Verdon winning the state’s individual honors.

Boys swimming, boys volleyball and baseball all won NCS titles during the spring season as well, with the boys swimming and baseball teams being ranked near the top in the state all season long.

New sports facility for Saint Mary’s?

Saint Mary’s College is in the process of seeking approval to build what would be a state of the art sports complex at the Moraga campus. The proposed plan includes a 60,000-square-foot fitness facility, a 95-by-150-foot swimming pool, and a 950-seat “stadium” to go with the school’s new baseball field.

Prior to starting the building of the new facilities, the school must first be granted with six different permits and complete a California Environmental Quality Act determination.

The project is scheduled to be discussed in detail at the July 2 Moraga Planning Commission meeting.

The new facilities would be huge selling points for recruits for the Gaels’ athletic programs and would also likely draw more local fans to games.

Cunnane banned from MCC

Kristen Cunnane, the woman who recently came forward about how she was raped by her P.E. teacher at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School in the 1990s, had offered to do a free swimming clinic for kids at the Moraga Country Club. The MCC Board won’t let that happen.

Cunnane, who is currently an assistant swimming coach at Cal and was just honored as the top assistant coach in the country by the NCAA, wanted to give back to the swim club she started at in her youth and credits for turning her into the swimmer she became.

The MCC Board decided to ban Cunnane from doing the clinic or speaking at MCC. While the board did not cite a reason, Cunnane believes the board is worried about it looking like they are “siding” with her in regards to the fallout of her rape accusations.

Acalanes, Campolindo baseball teams win NCS

The Campolindo baseball team ended their season the way many baseball fans in the area thought they would all season by winning the Division 2 NCS title. The Cougars beat Dougherty Valley, 6-3, at the Oakland Coliseum Saturday in the championship. The Cougars finish the season with a record of 23-4-1.

The Acalanes baseball team may not have been the best team in the DFAL, having to compete against Campolindo, but the Dons didn’t let that stop them from running through the NCS Division 3 playoffs. The Dons won the Division 3 title Saturday over Tamalpais, 4-0, finishing the season with a 19-7 overall record.
