St. Mary’s falls in championship of WCC Tournament

It was an all too familiar sight in Las Vegas Monday night, as the Gonzaga Bulldogs beat the St. Mary’s Gaels in the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

On Jan. 27, when the Gaels beat Gonzaga on the road, it looked like the Gaels would run away with the WCC title. An overtime loss to the same Gonzaga team on Feb. 24 capped a three-game losing streak that saw the Gaels forced to share the regular season title. Both teams cruised into the championship game,  but Gonzaga controlled most of the game, earning the 75-63 win.

Based on their outstanding regular season resume, the Gaels should still get an invitation to the NCAA Tournament.

Campo girls fall short in overtime of NCS final

On Saturday night, the Campolindo girls basketball team nearly continued a string of NCS titles for Campolindo during this 2010-11 school year.

Trailing by 13 points entering the fourth quarter, it looked like the Cougars’ hopes of winning the championship were slim. The Cougars outscored number one seed, Bishop O’Dowd, 21-8, in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

The game remained tied for the beginning of overtime until the Cougars jumped out to a lead. A key 3-pointer from Bishop O’Dowd with a minute remaining gave the Dragons a lead they wouldn’t let go of.

The Cougars’ season will continue in the Nor-Cal Championships next week.
