Smoke in the sky

Black smoke visible from much of Lafayette entered the sky tonight. The smoke was a result of a fire just past the Lafayette border in Rossmoor.

The fire broke out at a condominium complex in the retirement community of Rossmoor around 6:40 p.m. tonight.

A passerby saw smoke and helped ensure the building was evacuated by knocking on doors and yelling for people to get out of the building.

No injuries were reported, but over 50 percent of the outside of the building was burned.

Firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District assisted on putting out the blaze.

The summer heat is here

The heat is here, but it may not stay too long. While tomorrow is expected to be in the high 80s and may reach into the 90s again like it did today, the cooling down process is expected to start on Wednesday.

The current forecast for Wednesday shows the high at 84 degrees with the high dropping to 78 degrees on Thursday.

After that, the next six days (Friday-Wednesday), are expected to be full of nice, comfortable mid-70s days.

Summer is definitely here. Let’s hope it stays comfortable and that we can avoid triple digits for as long as possible.

Lamorinda feels an earthquake

Many people in Lamorinda felt the shake of a magnitude 3.8 earthquake this afternoon. The earthquake struck at 2:57 p.m. and the epicenter was located near Pacifica and San Bruno, according to the United States Geological Survey’s earthquake tracker.

There have been no injuries or damage reported in the Lamorinda area, which is common with an earthquake of this magnitude.

An interesting note is that today is the 105th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake happened at 4:55 p.m. in the same area, but that was not likely felt in Lamorinda.

More technical information about the earthquake is available through the USGS’s website.
