Search for marijuana put on pause

Following the shooting that took place Monday night in the wooded area near Moraga and Canyon, law enforcement officials believed it was the result of people protecting an illegal marijuana grow in the hills.

After authorities searched for the shooting suspects Monday night, they spent Tuesday searching for the marijuana grow they believed the shooters were protecting.

East Bay Regional Park District police Capt. Mark Ruppenthal called the search off shortly after it begun, saying that more planning and more involvement from law enforcement agencies would be required for a successful search of the terrain.

Gunmen shoot at officer near Rancho Laguna

An East Bay Regional Park District officer was shot at by an unknown number of gunmen just before 7 p.m. Monday night. The officer was in the wooded area near Moraga and Canyon when he was fired upon.

The officer was rescued by law enforcement officers from Lafayette, Moraga and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. He was uninjured in the shooting.

Law enforcement officials from several agencies searched for the shooters last night until they deemed it too dark to continue. The search was expected to continue today.

Police believe the shooting is related to potential marijuana grows in that area. There have been marijuana grows discovered in that area before and officers are regularly sent to check for illegal activity.

Rancho Laguna Park

The Moraga Parks and Recreation Commission hosted a meeting full of debate tonight at the Hacienda de las Flores, as the future of Rancho Laguna Park was discussed.

The main issue is that potential plans for a redesign of the park include a fenced-in dog park that is considerably smaller than the space dog owners currently use at the park.

The plans include putting in turf athletic fields that could help to allow for local youth sports programs to stop from overcrowding on other local fields.

While the plans are sure to upset some people in the community no matter what, there did seem to be a sense of compromise between the different groups at the meeting, looking for what is best for the community as a whole.

PDF versions of the renderings of the three different concepts for the future of Rancho Laguna Park are available on the Town of Moraga’s website.

4th of July Run results

While Moraga’s 4th of July run is often referred to as a “fun run,” that definitely doesn’t mean that there isn’t a fight to the finish every year.

In this year’s 5 mile run, Harlan Lopez, of Walnut Creek, won in a time of 27:11.66. Lopez is a graduate of Acalanes. Carrie Verdon was the top female finisher, finishing 12th overall in a time of 32:17.97. Verdon is Campolindo’s cross country star who won the state cross country race this fall.

Bradley Miller, of Moraga, won the 2 mile run in a time of 11:33.22. Mary Orders, also of Moraga, was the top female finisher in the 2 mile run in a time of 13:14.40.

Four new Eagle Scouts

Moraga Boy Scout Troop 234 recently gave the honor of Eagle Scout to four of their local members. The four new Eagle Scouts are Evan Gordon, Scott Holmes, Jeffrey Smith and Zack Hazarabedian.

For his Eagle project, Gordon helped raise funds and collect donated goods to send to soldiers abroad.

Smith upgraded the stairway in Huckleberry Regional Botanic Preserve in Oakland.

Hazarabedian designed and built a new bench for the Lafayette Christian Church.
