In the Capraesque spirit of looking back on last year in search of bright spots amid the gloom, kudos are in order for Berkeley Rep. This news just in from our friends at the theater, who are understandably proud of the raves they racked up last year. First off, Mary Zimmerman’s dulcet fairytale “The Arabian Nights” has sold [...]

What would you do if hackers posted a fake update on your Twitter account and told followers that you were on crack and couldn’t come to work today?
Such was the case for CNN’s Rick Sanchez whose microblog on Twitter.com was attacked by hackers who posted a fake update about Rick’s crack hangover. Among the [...]

OMG! Disney’s tween pop culture juggernaut “High School Musical,” the Ice Tour is skating on back into San Jose. Troy, Gabriella and the gang doing line-dancing crazy eights. Who could ask for anything more? LOL, no? Seriously, I’d love to hear what the text-generation really thinks of the ice show iteration of HSM. Is it a must-see? Or lamer [...]

Ah, 2008, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Seriously. This is one year when that Dickens line actually qualifies as an understatement. On the upside, Shakespeare Santa Cruz declared victory in its emergency fundraising campaign to save the theater. On the downside, the American Musical Theater of San Jose lost its [...]

It’s deja vu all over again at the Magic Theatre. Fast on the heels of a successful emergency fundraising campaign at Shakespeare Santa Cruz, which raised $416,000 in one week, San Francisco’s Magic, which is dedicated to giving birth to new plays, is launching a campaign of its own. Theater officials say they must raise $350,000 by January 9 or [...]

A moment of silence for Harold Pinter. The Nobel Prize winning playwright who transformed the way we think about language in the theater, from the ominousness of the legendary Pinter pause to the damning nature of mindless chatter, died Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 78. The iconic British playwright, the man whose work [...]

All’s well that ends well at Shakespeare Santa Cruz, which raised a whopping $416,417 by Monday, exceeding its do-or-die goal of $300,000, and saving the theater from extinction. Read my story in the paper tomorrow for the full scoop on the theater’s battle for survival but know this now. In the words of the Bard, [...]
