Taking New Steps

Cristian Valle joined the U.S. Army in June 2001, two weeks after graduating from San Lorenzo High School. Sgt. Valle lost most of both legs in his second tour of Iraq after an explosive device was thrown near his vehicle. Nearly a year after his injury, Valle remains optimistic that he will someday walk with out his cane.

Martin Serena spends several nights a week after work trapping feral cats to have them fixed, de-wormed and checked for disease, in an effort to stem the population and keep them healthy. He spends his own money - $79 per cat - and has so far spent over $4,500 to help his furry friend.

For more than 20 years now Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda has been kidnapping children to use as soldiers and sex slaves in his wish to overthrow president Yoweri Museveni's government.
