Jake Long at No. 4?

Just confirmed the Raiders have no intention of moving Robert Gallery back to left tackle. Gallery has talked with line coach Tom Cable and been told he will remain at left guard.

Since Sims’ departure leaves a void at left tackle, it leaves open the possibility that the Raiders would consider Michigan tackle Jake Long with the No. 4 pick in the draft.

Kwame Harris, the free agent scheduled to visit Friday from the 49ers, is considered a right tackle. Given that he watched his entire rookie season from the sidelines, it’s doubtful Mario Henderson, one of three third-round draft picks last season, would be up to being a starting left tackle in Year 2.

The free agent market is light on tackles. Cleveland’s Nat Dorsey is a four-year veteran who was a backup but is regarded as having potential. George Foster of Detroit played in a zone blocking scheme in Denver but was at his best on the right side.

At the NFL scouting combine, 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan opined that as many as six tackles could go in the first round, but Long may be the only one who would go at No. 4. Boise State’s Ryan Clady operated in a zone blocking scheme in college, comparing it to the Denver Broncos. Clady did not participate in drills in Indianapolis because of pectoral injury sustained during a bench press workout.

Laws I believe is every bit as good as Dorsey or Ellis, the man has strength and he is nimble. Like what they were doing with Sapp. That may be the answer to Turdell and Kelly getting and keeping fresh?

  • Wolverine Raider

Daniel, sure but do you only compare Gallery and Long because they are from the Big 10?

    Go Raiders.

  • http://. Coach on Wheels

If we sign Berrian and draft Jake Long we’ll be in wildcard contention? LOL stop it, I’m dying here. LOL yeah, Jake Long if he outperforms Sims would eliminate a few sacks and Berrian MAY be a slight improvement over Porter so yippee! We win 5-6 more games?

So far we lost our best DT, our best pass rusher in terms of sacks per snaps and everybody forgets – OUR D COST US FAR MORE GAMES THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

Long and Berrian can watch teams run at will on Burgess and Sands from the sidelines better than Sims and Porter did?

  • tom flores

Dakota as usual you are right on with your analysis I was wondering myself if ATL would select DMAC after the whole VICK experience…

I for one, would welcome Long…I just didn’t think he would be around at number 4 …that why I thought Gholston would be our guy…if what you predict rings true…Al Davis is gonna have a really tough time choosing between a legacy guy that promises to be even better than dad…and a beast like Gholston. Everyone knows that Al Davis called Howie and tried drag him outta retirement and get him to suit up again for the S & B just a few years ago…

if Al Davis felt that we were in such dire straits then..what is he thinking now ???

Raiders need to make the D line their priority and that seems to be what they are doing…I still think we coudl use LB help and we still have a shot at Briggs…damn the Cap…we cna drop even more weak links in the chain and get into the Briggs game..no one else is even calling because they think his price tag is gonna be too high…but not for Al Davis !

“now is the time to strike BIG AL…(I mean Darth Vader)…now is the time to strike with your deathray and knock out all the competition !!!

  • SC Raider

I guess since Kelly is moving to DT we could go with the Kelly/Warren/Sands combo at DT. Draft DE – Gholston or C.Long. We’d have DE combo of Burgess/Richardson/Rookie 1st rdr. I just don’t know if that will be good enough against the run to improve. I have just had my heart set on a big DT w/ the first pick. I can’t see us picking J.Long b/c of Gallery and the job Cable did last year with the flaming bag of crap we handed him.

  • Dakota

Hobs, I agree, I like Laws too, I happen to be a ND fan. That being said, if we draft either C. Long or Vernon in round 1, or either of the DTs, I think we will have to go OL or WR in round 2. Just way too much invested in one part of your team if you go d-line rounds 1 and 2 don’t you think? I know how good the giants are, but I bet if you compared salaries the raiders would be spending a lot more on theirs than are the Giants.

  • Quagmire’d

6-yrs, $57M for Samuel. Gotta pay Nnamdi something similar to that….20M guaranteed….32M paid out over the first 3 yrs.

  • SC Raider

COW – “win 5-6 more games” ? That would put us at 9-7 or 10-6, hell yeah I would take that compared to the misery that has been the last 5 years. I’d take that right now if it was offered to me.

  • Dakota

I have a bad feeling that the Broncos are going to end up getting Briggs. They have release Gold and cleared some space by dropping Walker…I would hate to see that.

  • Rob Ryan’s Pickled Liver

Please Al, the Turd is flushed. Do not bring Barry Sims back under any circumastances!!

  • freezie

Flaming bag of crap, well put.

  • daniel

wolverine , looking to stats in college is useless, a RB can have 3000 yards and still be a bust, it depends what your system is and what players you have sorrounding him

  • Raider Buck

I’m tired of reading all the crap on this blog anymore so I don’t know if any of you know this but we don’t have McLown to kick around anymore

    Lance Briggs@MLB(via free agengy, with Morrison and Howard@OLB’s) + G.Wilson@SS(via free agency) + M.Huff@FS + T.Laws@DT(via 2nd round pick)= Top 5 defense, if not #1.

  • Hobs Gnarly

Just think if the Raiders had gone after Parcell’s as the GM the Raiders could have been as active as the fins. I would not bash McCown, he didn’t get a lot of help or support

  • tom flores

Coach on Wheels (maddenraider) is right…we can’t expect to get to the play-offs this year with just two guys..it takes a team effort and for every FA we sign and every guy we draft to be a starter from day 1…folks wea ren;t even close…BUT…we are two great drafts from pulling our RV into the neighborhood (as Morris says) if we do well in both areas.

Or… we could sit back and pick lent out of our bellies and do nothin’

  • C4

#1 pick should be Mcfadden, Richardson and Burgess are fine@DE.

  • Trevor

SC Raiders, I think COW’s point was that it would take 5-6 more wins to get into the playoffs, and in a tongue-in-cheek way, he was saying Long and Berrian are not going to get us close to 5-6 more wins.

  • JB

    Dakota & others

Quit worrying about the payroll. It’s Uncle Al’s checkbook and all is good as long as the checks don’t bounce. The Raiders have a history of being able to maneuver around the Salary Cap so let’s let them do their job and not worry about things we can’t control.

And, the first two picks for D players is NOT too much.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! Just as Belecheat what he thinks about the importance of D-lines.

  • Trevor

C4: A few problems with that. 1. The Raiders don’t pay big bucks for LBs, and Briggs will command big bucks. 2. Briggs is an OLB, not a MLB. 3. Gibril Wilson is a FS, not a SS.

  • Wolverine Raider

Well considering roughly what 75-85% of opinions made on draft picks come from game tape when they were in college, I just can’t agree.

Sometimes a draft pick doesn’t work out. Heck it’s a crapshoot really. But when we picked Gallery, everyone was raving how we have our LT for the next 10 years.

If you can’t look at college stats, I find it hard to even have a starting point on judging talent. Surely combine stats aren’t the final decider or even a pro day of the players.

    Go Raiders.

  • tom flores

Gholstom or C. Long in round 1 and Trevor Laws in round 2….as works for me as long as we address WR and OT in the rounds following…

we need an LB folks to assist our D line in stopping the run…Dakota any news yet on Briggs other than no news…???

  • Hobs Gnarly

Dakota, I don’t care how much Al spends the line of scrimmage is the key to the game. The O-line is not a particular concern of mine maybe for some depth, it’s clear they want Harris to go LT but the D-Line killed has killed the Raiders for many years now, they have the DB’s and LB’s they need beasts on the D-line. Gholston, I was not sold on him until his Bench Press and 40 session.

  • Dakota

Gee, okay, let’s forget about the salary cap when discussing possible players…lol.

  • daniel

you just heard from CABLE, our lineman are in the bottom rounds of the draft, why would we spend the 4th overall pick for someone whos gonna be a RT and doesnt fit the ZBS

  • Hobs Gnarly

Yeah WR is a must but they don’t have a third rounder, bummer there.

  • tom flores

    C$

I agree with you…we are close enough on D if we make the right pick-ups in FA this year to draft our way into respectability.

  • Hobs Gnarly

listen to me, I sound like Al Davis salivating over Ricky Dudley the fine specimen he was. Gholston

  • EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER

Having had the pleasure of watching Gholson play last year (I now live in the Buckeye State) I can tell you he put up with both double and triple teams and chip shots and never quit. Even Long got help with him. I was impressed even though I am a USC alum.

  • RaiderDogg

McQuistan played LT in college. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see that switch happen.

    Hobs -

I’m with you on Laws. Hopefully he’s there at pick #34. I wouldn’t take him in the 1st round though.

  • tom flores

    Trevor

Wilson was a SS previously… and Al Davis WILL pay Briggs and we dont need an MLB…an OLB…I think Morrison proved he can do it anywhere on the field last year…Briggs can go outside or inside who cares…he is a solid LB and we need some solid LB play this year…

Source: Raiders close to signing Wilson
    by Jay Glazer

New York Giants free safety Gibril Wilson is close to accepting a six-year, $39 million contract with Oakland, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal would include a $16 million signing bonus.

It’s believed the Giants are unwilling to match the offer.

Wilson is coming off his best NFL season with 92 tackles, seven passes defensed and a career-high four interceptions. Wilson also had 27 tackles in four playoff games.

The Wilson signing wouldn’t bode well for Raiders safety Michael Huff. The seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, Huff is on the trading block after two disappointing seasons.

  • Hobs Gnarly

We should soon see how serious Davis is, any crazy picks and we know he is sand bagging it and laughing all the way to the bank. Sorry Dakota McFadden doesn’t make sense unless they bag him and trade him for lets say Dallas’ first rounder along with a third.

  • Hobs Gnarly

How the hell did Gruden and Allen get so much cap room?

  • Hobs Gnarly

They make a pretty good team!

  • Wolverine Raider

Well in who’s opinion doesn’t he fit the ZBS scheme. I guess it depends on what exact ZBS since Michigan ran one since 2006.

I never said take Long at #4 for sure. I asked how he’s Gallery and it’s been taken from there. I guess with getting rid of Sims (who I couldn’t stand) I just start to worry who in the heck we’re going to have blocking JR’s backside. JR is the franchise and if that much money is on the sidelines hurt, we’re screwed no matter what.

And I didn’t hear from Cable. I think it was an article from Jerry or something a few days back where I read that Cable comment.

Look I just want to win like the rest of you. Picking #4, a lot of the decisions on the pick are going to be made for us by who goes in the Top 3. Plain and simple.

    Go Raiders.

  • tom flores

the only thing keeping us from the play-offs ( dare I say it) is a solid D…we can fluder for a few years at Offense and still make it…(Chicago) all we need is to plug the whole in the middle and force guys to throw into our coverage…which I believe is pretty solid when you throw in another solid saftey.

Guys have gotten burned in our secondary..but thats too be expected with any QB worth his salt able to look at his number 3 or 4 receiver…4 or 5 seconds is way too long to let a QB survey the field…

  • Yalls Trippin

Have a feeling we will plug the other DE position with Jevon Kearse…

  • Hobs Gnarly

I have to admit though, as negative as I have been I have the optimism of preseason right now. You know what they say about us Raider fans, we think we are going to win the super bowl every year, lmao.
I wonder if there was any truth to the rumor Chris Long didn’t want to come here. He didn’t sound to enthused when asked.

  • M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4

Wait…who did Miami pick up at DT in Free Agency…Ferguson from Dallas? If thats the only big name DT they picked up that does not rule them out selecting DT at slot #1 as Ferguson is purely for depth at the position

  • tom flores

    that should say flounder….sorry guys

  • Dakota

6 years, $39 Mill, $16 Mill signing bonus for Wilson…Raider Nation, prepare to eat more shite from everyone in the media and NFL.

Also, if we sign Wilson to replace Huff, we have not improved ourselves that much. I hope that report is wrong about Huff…

  • Quagmire’d

Huff to FS, if all else fails.

  • Sean Salisbury

    SUPER BOWL OR BUST!

  • tom flores

    RRpickled

thanks for news on Gibril..I hope this does NOT mean we will trade Huff…simply that we now have a knockout punch tandem …finally… at saftey and that as Dakota has said repeatedly…

    pack yo bags STU…

  • http://cctimes Alameda Insider

In my humble yet correct opinion, this is wonderful news if it happens,..Jake Long is who I want with that # 4 pick,…no other player worth a fig outside of Howies kid,.who I also wouldnt mind having,..but our O line blows,..period,..I like Jake Longs attitude, strength,..etc…perfect fit.

  • M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4

If we awarded the highest DT contract in history to retain Tommy Kelly and on the verge of awarding another hefty contract just south of $40 Million at SS for Gibril and nab Berrian or Javon…….It certainly looks like we are LOADING up seriously for a huge push at a Super Bowl Run!!!! I mean something tells me between the Kiffin fiasco and the money were throwing around at the Free Agency and our pick at #4 that Al Davis realizes he doesnt have many more chances at his age and health conditions……

  • Hobs Gnarly

I don’t think Jake Long compares to Gallery at all. He definately has more strength

  • raiders2

wow, what a waste michael huff was

  • EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER

    Dakota,
Who cares what the media says. Remember we are the S&B.
Just Win Baby! By the way, do we still have enough money for uniforms or will we have to rent them this year?
