Reece, Spires signed

Wide receiver, Marcel Reece, who earned a Raiders helmet Sunday for his performance in the Raiders’ rookie minicamp, also earned a contract with the club.

Defensive end Greg Spires, who agreed to terms the weekend, also arrived in Alameda for the start of an organized team activity and signed a contract.

With the Raiders at the 80-man limit, cornerback Duane Starks and fullback Matt Hahn, an undrafted free agent from Penn State, were waived.

Starks was signed April 15.

The OTA runs through Thursday, with practice on the final day open to the media, which means the first look at quarterback JaMarcus Russell on the practice field in nearly a year. Russell is expected to be among the “97 to 98” percent of the roster Lane Kiffin expects to be practicing.

For some reason the moderator won’t let me link the best article I have ever read about Al Davis. Everyone needs to read, Just Live, Baby! by Brian Curtis of the The New York Times. Check it out in the sports section under teams/Raiders. Six pages of correct reporting about the world of Al Davis. Enjoy!

    RaiderTW,

thanks man! love new raider sites, this 1 looks pretty good.

  • La Milicia Negra

    Eyepatch…

yeah its good, have read it, we gotta remember that this is almost a year ago, now Al is even older :/

  • Eyepatch

Well it just goes to show you he is not in control of the on the field descision making the rest of the media would like you to believe. He lets the coaches coach because he has to. That was my problem with Shell coming back, he was a average coach with Al standing over his shoulder before. Then when he gets full control the second time around, he is the worst coach in Raider history. Al made the mistake of rehiring him and trusting in his judgement. Thankfully he was replaced with Kiffin.

  • darkknight01

did the DE gunsheim from washington get cut? I hope not…I think he can bring something to the table eventually. I hope Malik Jackson makes the team.

If Hawkins plays well and contributes and Shields doesn’t….I’m gonna be pissed at our scouts.

    Dakota,

    One more.

    Go Lakers!

  • darkknight01

haha….Barkley the warrior hater in gambling debt…thats no surprise….he hated on the warriors last year and because he probably put as crap load of money on dallas last year! LOL

  • Dakota

Man that article really pulls me in different directions: I want the Raiders to win just FOR Al Davis, but at the same time I want to yell at Al Davis and tell him to quit and get someone in here that knows what the hell they are doing…

I hope the old coot gets it right one more time…

Believe me, Al is in full control of his faculties. Granted, he fought in the Civil War, but ever since taking over the franchise, I’ve seen some of the greatest football player don the “Silver and Black” Al derserves all the credit as well as the blame. He is the Raiders.

  • Dakota

    Oldman,

He may be “in full control of his faculties”, but his faculties are not up to par for the NFL anymore…sounds like he even understands that…too bad he might pick a guy like Upshaw, head of the weakest player’s association of the big three sports, to run the team someday.

  • La Milicia Negra

    Oldman,

nobody disagrees with you on that, but had he turned the keys over to guy like Bill Polian after 2002 season, I bet our last 5 years would have been much easier on the eyes…

  • KoolKell

Jerry, the first thing out of your mouth today should be a Russell update, OKAY?

It’s hot as hell in Alameda today!

  • Scottish Raider

The first news must be of those players getting cut before camp, especially Lamont Jordan, Stuart Schweigert and (potentially) Jake Grove and Fred Wakefield.

These guys won’t command any trade value, so they need to be cut from the roster by June 3rd – at the latest!

  • http://freedomofchoice raidersfanindonkeycountry

C’mon Jerry, we got OTA’s goin’ on and an open day today (unless I was missinformed) what’s goin’ on?

  • 909raiderlifer

Scottish…. Hope I’am wrong on this one, buy for some reason I think little Stu will stay for now. AL likes him for some reason.

Koolkell… 94* at the moment here, up over 100* fri.

Al Davis designed the uniforms, hired smart people to build his football teams, and took credit for their work. We’ll be fine without him.

    Great link, 909; Busted coverage.com

love the video of the mascot taking down the fan.

  • Dakota

    Scottish,

I doubt Grove will be cut since he can backup the C and both G positions. Too valuable to be released.

  • http://www.pillage-plunder.com BART Bridge Balla

so Nation, who do you think is gonna be the first veteran to get cut? Lil Stuey, Jake Grove.

  • Scottish Raider

Al may like Schweigert. The Alameda press department may think he’s great. But the ugly truth about Mr Schweigert is that he is too slow, can’t hit and misses tackles. He may be media-friendly but he is also a complete waste of money. Schweigert’s salary in 2007 added up to a staggering $2,174,094 and his cap value is currently $2,332,428.

    LMN,
Back from Lunch, a couple of tacos and a beer. I’m good. I’m sure you guys have already beat this dead horse into the ground, but if you had majority ownership of a sports franchise, are you saying you’re going to pay someone else to make your decisions? My answer is “NO”. AL is training his kid to stand post as if it were the “US Mint” and probably with the same shrewedness. It’s tough to say what would have happened but it’s AL’s business model that has us posting on this blog. It was Al decision to change our uniform from a “white” background on the shield and numbers to “Black”. Sorry guys, but I don’t know anything else. I was born in 1950, I had to watch the winers before the birth of this franchise, so excuse me for being locked in. Enough spewing,It’s cool to talk about my team in the off-season. This blogging thing is cool.

  • Scottish Raider

Dakota, you may be right. The same also applies to Morris and Boone – both of whom are listed as Centers, but both have featured as Guards. I just Boone and Morris are better value than Grove. Jake has had too many chances.

And I am still upset that we cut Adam Spieker so early. The kid had real potential.

  • KoolKell

LMN, I don’t know, 20 million per seems like a very high wage to me.

  • RaiderNation951

If Hartwell can play I can see that making Thomas expendable. I don’t think LB is a spot they need to loose anyone but Thomas isn’t that good.

  • Dakota

    Scottish,

Boone and Morris have played in what, a combined 1 NFL game? Grove certainly has not lived up to expectations, but he should be a serviceable backup, and he seemed to take the demotion okay last year.

I can’t imagine that Grove has an exorbitant salary cap number, but you would know better than I.

  • KoolKell

Grove bought a house in Alameda, he aint going nowhere.

  • RaiderNation951

Grove was a 2nd pick in the 2nd round. He could be making what $4 mil?

  • Scottish Raider

Robert Thomas is terrible value for his $3m salary, he costs 3x Sam Williams!

I say cut both of them. Alston and Gbaja-Biamila are better value and we might have found another good one in Malik Jackson.

  • Scottish Raider

    Grove’s cap value is $822k.

  • Tonio

at that much.. .Grove is a serviceable backup… Thomas I think… will be gone… I think it was the reason Gbaja came back this year …

JaSkinny Russell, Curry surgery and more OTA news
Plenty of Raiders news to breakdown from the first day of access to OTA practice.

Here are some quick hits. Since rookies aren’t allowed to attend until next week, there won’t be a Darren McFadden update.

    1. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell looks slim in that red No. 2 jersey. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said he’s in great shape and Russell said he’s down to 269 pounds.

“I was never even close to 300 pounds,” Russell said of the offseason rumors.

    2. Wide receiver Ronald Curry is hurt again.

After an injury-free 2007 season, Curry had foot surgery two weeks ago and will miss at least another two weeks.

Center Jake Grove (knee), defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (knee), safety Jarrod Cooper (knee) and linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba (knee) also are out recovering from injuries suffered last season.

Free safety Stuart Schweigert “tweaked his leg” during practice Monday, Kiffin said, and hasn’t practiced since.

    3. LaMont Jordan is nowhere to be found.

Which is no surprise, but Kiffin hardly gave Jordan a free pass for skipping the voluntary workouts — something he always does for Derrick Burgess, who is continuing his tradition of avoiding OTAs.

Left guard Robert Gallery is another non-injury absence. He got married and will return next week.

As is their custom, kicker Sebastian Janikowski and punter Shane Lechler were out.
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is gone because he hasn’t signed his exclusive franchise tag offer, and is thus not under contract. Kiffin said Asomugha will attend the mandatory minicamp June 3-5.

    4. Depth chart update

Michael Huff has been moved from strong safety to free safety, making room for free-agent Gibril Wilson in the box. Kiffin said they may still alternate.

And, free-agent signee Edgerton Hartwell is getting a look at middle linebacker. If the longtime run stopper does well, don’t be surprised if Kirk Morrison is moved to strong-side linebacker.

Backup tight end Fred Wakefield, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, is experimenting at defensive end.

The depth chart isn’t official, but here’s who took the field first.

Offense: QB JaMarcus Russell, RB Justin Fargas, FB Justin Griffith, LT Kwame Harris, LG Paul McQuistan, C Chris Morris, RG Cooper Carlisle, RT Cornell Green, TE Zach Miller, WR Javon Walker, WR Drew Carter.

Defense: RE Kalimba Edwards, NT Terdell Sands, DT Gerard Warren, LE Jay Richardson, SLB Sam Williams, MLB Kirk Morrison, WLB Thomas Howard, RCB Stanford Routt, LCB DeAngelo Hall, SS Gibril Wilson, FS Michael Huff.

    Oldman,

Yes, I would hire someone to build my teams for me if I were an NFL owner, and I thought it would give my team a better chance of winning.
