Time for Seabass to compete
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 19th, 2008 at 11:55 am in Oakland Raiders.
Lane Kiffin talked earnestly last year of having no free rides, a new Raiders order in which reputations meant nothing and performance was everything. He even said players “aren’t on scholarship,” a reference which had been used for years regarding certain players who were deemed Al Davis favorites (Dan Land, James Jett and Alvis Whitted come to mind).
Kiffin found his poster boy in Justin Fargas, who ascended past LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes to gain 1,009 yards, an unremarkable total until you consider he wasn’t a starter until Week 7 and missed the last two games due to injury.
When street free agent Chris Clemons and fifth-round draft pick Jay Richardson fared well in training camp, better than third-round pick Quentin Moses, the Raiders did the unthinkable. They made Moses the highest drafted player not to make the roster of the team that drafted him.
When Darren McFadden became available in the draft, the Raiders unflinchingly threw him into the mix at running back along with Fargas and Michael Bush. Why? Competition. Compete every day, every play.
“It’s a pretty good stable, I mean if you want to talk to one to eight, one to nine, it’s open competition, so our philosophy is, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past. I don’t care if you were the fourth-round pick, one of the top guys of the SEC that have ever come out as a runner, I don’t care if you’re Justin Fargas and ran for 1,009 yards, I mean, we have a standard here of the play that we want to present as a group of running backs, and we’re going to hold everybody that suits up and steps out on that field to those standards,” running backs coach Tom Rathman said. “When you’re not able to get it done to those standards, we’re going to go to the next guy. Somebody’s going to perform for us, and it’s going to be at a high level, and that’s our expectations.”
Funny how you never notice special teams coach Brian Schneider saying the same thing about his place kicker.
Sebastian Janikowski has been handled with kid gloves since the day he was drafted in 2000, the same as punter Shane Lechler, who arrived in the same year.
They remain the pride and joy of Al Davis, the one man who would pull the trigger on Ray Guy, Janikowski and Lechler, all unique and gifted talents coming out of college.
The problem is Janikowski, the controversial first-round pick in 2000, has never measured up the way Guy did and Lechler has. Yet each year he is treated as an untouchable.
Before they get to training camp, and perhaps the mandatory minicamp on June 3, the Raiders should bring in a place kicker who does more than caddy for Jano. Someone who can compete with him in practice and preseason games and be given a legitimate opportunity to do as Clemons, Richardson and Fargas did _ win a job.
Granted, there isn’t a lot out there. Morten Andersen is too old, and most kickers have found spots. The Rams will be parting with former UCLA and Mission San Jose kicker Justin Medlock at some point, having drafted correction, signed Josh Brown.
Medlock would be an interesting call because he idolized Janikowski as a high school kicker. He washed out with the Chiefs, but that’s not unusual in the kicking business.
It doesn’t have to be Medlock, anyway. Just somebody who comes in and is told he has a chance to win the job based on performance. Janikowski may very well win the job anyway, but at least he would be pushed.
Last season, the Raiders didn’t even bring in a place kicker until Aug. 6, when Tyler Fredrickson arrived to allow some more down time for both Janikowski and Lechler.
If you’ve watched much football practice, you realize kickers don’t really work all that hard anyway. If they stood around much longer, they’d be as inactive as the reporters.
Yet Jano kicked sparingly in the preseason. Fredrickson, who openly acknowledged he had no shot, was doing all the kicking by the preseason finale to keep Seabass from spoiling in the sun.
In a Week 1 loss to Detroit, Janikowski lined up for three field goal attempts and made none of them. A 50-yarder was blocked and 46- and 57-yarders were wide left. It’s probably unfair to criticize any kicker for missing from 57 yards, but attempts like that are precisely why he was drafted in the first round. To be a game changer, you’ve got to change the game.
He is a 62.2 percent kicker from 40 yards and beyond (71-for-114) and is less than 50 percent from 50 and beyond (16-for-34). Again, a 50-plus kick is no gimme, but we’re not talking about “normal” kickers here.
Over the last three years, Janikowski has been at or near the bottom of the NFL in field goal percentage (71.9 percent in 2007, 72 percent in 2006, 66.7 percent in 2005). Those seasons followed his two best years (89.3 percent in 2004, 88 percent in 2003).
And while Janikowski had 22 touchbacks last year, tying a career high, his consistency in that area is maddening as well and the Raiders have not been a strong coverage team despite his powerful leg.
This isn’t to say Janikowski should be vilified or run out of town. He has stayed out of trouble and kept a low profile for a few years now after getting into trouble at Florida State and in his early years as a Raider, problems tied to drinking.
But it’s hypocritical for the Raiders to concede him the job and then carry on about open competition.
OTA
The Raiders begin another three-day organized team activity Tuesday, with media access scheduled for Thursday.

May 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
How about open competition for reporters?
May 19th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
go raiders
May 19th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
dose that mean we arnt gonna get a relavent post till thursday?
May 19th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
There has to be some good college kicker out there who finished his eligability, and could give Jano some compition. I am always hoping Jano will turn it around and show the talent I have alway thought he had. I was at the game last year when he hit that 64 yarder high off the upright. He has incredible range, and he will get into grooves where he is real good, but just as I think he has got it all turned around he goes into a slump again. A consistant FG kicker could be the difference in two or three games per year.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
That was competition of course. I with there was a way to go back and change it when you make such an obvious typing error.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
one shot of blended koolaid coming right up !!!
May 19th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Kicking is different in respects to competition and preseason.
I don’t think competition will help him, but I think kicking throughout the preseason would.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
10th Oh ya
May 19th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
i never post, but i read daily… no time to argue trite b.s. about AD. been a raider fan for 27 yrs. just wanted to say stay positive, Nation…we’re gonna have a good year, even if we don’t make the playoffs, at least we will be contenders in our own division again! keep up the good posts, jerry! peace.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
raiderkoolaid… i agree. Jano has flashes of being that awesome kicker. and then he’ll shank it.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
The only competition Jano needs is beverage related. In other words, another liquid has to step up and displace beer in his starting lineup.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Speaking of beverages, thanks for the tasty quaff os kool-aid Pete… I can now say without the slightest doubt we will go undefeated for the rest of the decade, just like we did in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
There is no one out there available that can be a serious challege to Sebastian. If he works hard in the off season he can have his best season. To let him go to another team would be a mistake.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Great point on Seabass. Everytime I get down on him I remember the 67 yard attempt hitting the goal post about 12 feet up. BTW the Rams didn’t draft Josh Brown.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I would love to see Jano vindicated at some point in the future. Like in a playoff game, having him hit like a crazy 65 yarder and get carried off the field. (ahh pipe dreams) We all know he has the talent to be one of the best in the game.
Get Rid of the INFEILD.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Here it comes…999 comments about how Jano is a fat, drunk pollock and is such a waste…blah, blah, blah. We should have kept Nedney, Al Davis should die…etc.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
odell thurman should be signed..what a steal that would be
May 19th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
LOL. You guys begged for a new post from Jerry, and he responds by bringing up yet another wasted first round draft pick by Davis, the fat, drunk, Janakowski. You ask, you get. Now quit yer bitchin.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
What, we should comment that he is a skinny, sober, Probowler of midwestern descent? Cmon, if discipline =results for the rest of the team it SURE does for a 250 lb. kicker drafted in the first round.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
JERRY…THANK YOU, LIKE THOSE DOWNWARD STATS TOO.
I’ve been making comments about Seabass over and over for the same reasons. He has lost more games than he has won for us, and as you say, he was a #1 pick to be a “game-maker-difference.” He hasn’t been close.
Note to Kiffen: We’re behind you and we’re hoping for the best, again. We like your compete idea, but you can’t have it both ways. Like Jerry points out, Seabass gets a “free-ride?” WHY.
PS: If Seabass is going to get another free ride, which it looks like he is…then I suggest the following: I’ve said it before on this site, and I’ll say it again. “When Seabass is going to kick a field goal, or rather ATTEMPT, have someone in the end-zone wave a Volka bottle back and forth and maybe he won’t shank as many…too far left…too far right…another miss.” This last statement is not a joke, I mean it seriously. I’m so tired of his KEY MISSES.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
And can’t DMC kick field goals?
May 19th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Why don’t you guys just start your own blogs, anyway? 12 year olds have blogs, for crying out loud. It’s not hard. I know some of you have trouble typing, but there’s software for that. Firefox web browser has built in spell check. It’s a start.
I mean, you guys sit in here and commiserate like babies because Jerry doesn’t tell you exactly what you want to hear. Then, you accuse him of not knowing anything. Well, there you have it! Since you know as much as he does, spend the 12 bucks or whatever it is to rent a cheap domain for your blog, and let loose. Give Jerry some competition. Get off of your butts and makes something of yourselves.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I wonder what Jano’s stats are home vs. away.
I say if we have to kick on the infield, the A’s should have to hit home runs through the uprights.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
MR, post #20.
AMEN to that.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

MR, who is more of a loser: The whiny “12-year old” poster or the bozo (read:you)who pores over every absurd comment and complains about them 25x a day…
Get off your own butt and start a NFL team you can be proud of. Or just stifle yourself.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Gainesville, what evidence do you have that I’m not a Raider fan? What is your definition of a Raider fan, anyway? I follow the team every year, want to see them succeed, and criticize those who I feel get in the way of their success, especially that nut job Al Davis.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
sign odell.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

May 19th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Bo Knew, you lighten up. I’m just giving my opinion on how Al Davis continues to destroy this team. And, regarding your name; We don’t know what Bo “knew”. But we all found out that he was far more of an injury risk than Marcus, wasn’t he? Now, like Bo Jackson’s glass hip, I’m out of here. See you kool aid drinking homers tonight.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:43 pm

May 19th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
One final note to go on, Bo Knew. And I’ll got at it with you over this, tonight.
Bo Jackson was no football player. He was an athlete, who overachieved as a football player. The man couldn’t take a hit. Face it. That’s why his hip went. It was a matter of time. Marcus Allen, on the other hand, played into the late ’90s and established himself as the best short yardage backs in the NFL in his final years. Marcus got hit in the hip all the time. Bounced right back up. He’s a football player, not a buffed out baseball player showboating on a football field. Again, Bo Jackson was the typical Al Davis blunder. Another sad attempt to make an athlete a football player, and we paid for it after Bo’s departure. No contingency plan. Al bet the house on Bo and lost, like the idiot he is.
Have fun with that. It’s the truth. Now, seriously, see you guys tonight. I’m not going to waste a beautiful day in here.

I live in Cape Coral, FL
May 19th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I don’t have any confidence in Janokowski from anywhere on the field. He’s got to be the most inconsistent kicker the Raiders ever had.
There again, Al Davis drafting hype instead of direct knowledge.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Jano needs to improve his kicking, or should be kicked out.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
when you are drafted in the 1st round top 15 pick, you need to be one of the best kickers in the league, and he is not, you need to be an AP every year, and he is not.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
and another thing, we need a good ST coach. we cant cover, return, or kick.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
The Polish Cannon will not disappoint this year.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

you’re getting close…
May 19th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
MR, tell us something we don’t know…
May 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan “he has lost more games than won for us” – Good point and that should be the bottom line for any kicker. He isn’t clutch period. He was fortunate enough to not have to kick those pressure kicks during most of the Gruden era because we could score allot of points. Now he is on a young emerging offensive team, they are going to need a kicker to get them over the hump and win some games at times this season. Winning close games will give this team some quick confidence and allow them to get on a roll. I don’t see it from Seabass. He is a liability instead of an asset. Last years Denver game would be a perfect example. He could have nailed that kick and sent an FU to Shanarat and all his doubters. A message from him and the Raides… but, it was not to be.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I like jano always liked him liked that he looked like a hard core beer drinker you know but me and a lot of other people have been saying “this is the year for jano” but I dont think its going to happen, EVER. SO why not do what people are now saying and bring in some one to take his job I think we would have won at least 2 more games last year if we had a consistent kicker
May 19th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I’m out of here for a while, too many child like postings, too much senseless bickering and name calling. We’re suppose to be Raiders fans. Why respond to haters and child postings?
May 19th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Seabass was 10 for 11 inside the 40 yd line last year (greater than 90%); he was 7 for 10 or 70% from the 40 to the 49; and he was 6 for 11 or greater than 50% outside of 50 yards. I doubt you are going to find someone better than that AND he will kick one this year for the NFL record assuming he gets a chance at the end of a half or game.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Personally, I don’t care if he gets a record or not, all I care a about is winning games.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I still want jeremiah trotter
May 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
did you guys check out the pics on nfl.com for the rookie camp thing dmac was there sporting the good #20
May 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Jerry Mac… You did not report whether or not, Seabass was in attendance at the ota. Will assume, he was not. So the first time you will see him will be on 6/3, for the mandatory mini.Right?
My question for you Jerry is. Does Seabass, look like he is in some sort of shape, like he did last year?
Or, does he look like he’s been hanging out at Rob Ryan’s keg of beer? Like he did in days past.
Last chance for Seabass this year. Make em’ or Cut him.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
D-Mac, was looking sharp, in that Raider gamer jersey.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ask Bosworth if Bo could hit, you damn moron.
Bo knows MR is an idiot and so do all of us.
Go Raiders.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I think that competition would make Jano better.
http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/
May 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Sebass if a Fat Worthless piece of Crap, when you really look at the Kickers we could have had (and IM not EVEN talking about drafting). We could have ACCIDENTALLY signed a kicker and fared better than his Field Goal Percentage. He is absolutely the worst player we have ever held onto for this long. At least Alvis Witted Competed, didnt cost much (and did recover that fumble in the AFC Championship game). Sebass is dung.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Donkey RB Travis Henry, pulls hamstring doing 100yd. dash drills. Will miss OTA this week…..bummer.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Im so happy to see this thread I havent even read it yet!!!
Jerry, thanks
brb
May 19th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I think Janikowski can win any competition.
As long as the competition involves Jagermeister.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Jano looks more like a raider fan than a player on the squad
May 19th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Jerry is right SeaBass needs to be thrown back into the ocean or earn his job! 62% from 40+ yards is atrocious!
I been calling for this guys gills for years and he gets a free pass in here by you knuckleheads!
Moses is a different story he was a rookie he shouldnt have been beaten out you draft on potential, now Moses is gone and Clemons skates a year later now we have nothing to show for a 3rd round pick, idiocy! Im not sayin Moses is anything special but dam!
Al fire Rob Ryan and make SeaBass earn a spot!
May 19th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
You pinheads using the infield as an excuse is lame as sh!t.
Jano cost us a game or 3 every year so quit suckin his a$$h0le nation!
May 19th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Mista
Chill out man! We’re stuck with Jano the fat you know that! Thats no excuse for him blowin ass on sunday but it is what it is.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Kicking is all mental you can watch Jano kick before a game and nail 50 yard kicks one after another and then the game starts and from 35 yards out he bangs the upright!
Jerry, how many times has SeaBass hit the uprights or crossbars????
Look it up ASAP Jerry, thanks
May 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Jerry,
While I agree Sea Bass needs competition, I fail to agree with your rationalization based on % of made kicks.
In ‘07 he attempted 11 from 50 or long (23 out of 32 total), ‘06 he attempted 7 longer than 50 but was 18-25, in ‘05 he attempted 12 longer than 50 but was 20 out of 30.
Recheck your stats and if you take away the 50 + he’s a damn good kicker.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Bo’s hip wasn’t damaged so much by the hit on it, but more by his own power and unwillingness to quit on a play…much like a thoroughbred that runs until it breaks down. Bo was anything Bo wanted to be, and without that intensity he would’ve been none of the things he became.
Having personally seen so much of what Bo and Marcus did on the field, any implication that Bo didn’t know how to run, take/give a hit, absorb punishment, etc., is just absurd. Bo had an unfortunate injury that could’ve happened to any player in the league (and every other player knows it — it goes with the territory). Without that injury, no matter why he got it, he would be considered one of the greatest players ever.
Marcus was a great back for a long time. I’ve seen hundreds of running backs live and in-person, and Bo Jackson was the most amazing running back I’ve ever seen — even if it was for such a short time. Bo wasn’t a football player? That’s just stubbornness talking.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
You chill out 408 I wanna kick SeaBass between his uprights!
I dont bash too many players I havent said 1 word about Stu and I think he sucks so for Seabass to get a free ride it bugs the caca out of me.
If you’re in here bashing Stu, S Williams, Simms, Gallery and not saying 1 word about SeaBass performance your a douchebag in my book.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Janikowski has done a lot more for the Raiders than any one of you posers typing away on your keyboards. And I bet he’s in better shape than 95% of you that call him a fat-ass.
What a bunch of whiny, negative hypocrites.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
DSM point taken but we drafted him in the first round to make those 50+yarders. And he chokes all the time especislly with the game on the line.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
DSM, you’re going to sit here in front of GOD and tell us Jano is a damn good kicker????
WTF games have you been watching since we drafted him ? You cannot be serious!
May 19th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Janikowski is a damn good kicker.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
DSM,
Rob Ryan is a damn good DC too, right ?
Lord Jesus
May 19th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Rob Ryan is a damn good DC too.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
and Lord Jesus is a damn good savior.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Alvis, shouldnt you be doing a “where are they now” segment from your grandmothers basement ?
May 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

You were so good when we released you not 1 team signed you. That makes 31 out of 31 other teams felt even their 5th string WR was better than you…
Well, you did have Walsh & Shell in your corner but they told us Moss was done as a WR and his legs were shot…lol
May 19th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Yeah Bo was something else. I saw him WALK up the left fence in the coliseum against the A’s. I still have that Seattle game on tape. I’ve never seen anything like him.
My orthopedic, whose a Raider fan says he knew right away that his hip was badly damaged when he saw it. It didn’t look that bad to me.

Dakota chime in, we agree on everything.
May 19th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
To find a new kicker is just that: To FIND a new kicker. Nobody knows, until they see a guy in action. There are a ton of kickers worse than Jano in this league already.
Replacing Jano — not just for FG’s, but for kick-offs — just isn’t so easy. He makes far more than he misses, but he’s missed some easily make-able kicks at terrible times. He’s let the team down big-time, to say the least. But, there are plenty of other players on this team who didn’t make the play when their time came, too.
Jano will get the chance at the record again, and he’ll also get the chance to kick some game-deciding points. Might not be perfect, but he’ll be alright.
Remember when Neil Rackers hit 8 FG’s in a game? So does Rackers…just barely. It’s what have you done for me lately in the NFL, and since that moment of glory, Rackers is just another kicker. Would we rather have Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history? No thanks.
Pressure? If Vinitiari wasn’t given the chance to kick the winner in the snow-job Tuck game, Jano’s own FG would’ve been considered one of the greatest-ever under the circumstances…and NFL history would be much different now. Jano might’ve kicked a few more clutch FG’s given the chance that was stolen away.
Like everybody else on this team, Jano’s had his share of tough times, but he’s survived them. Jano is easy to support, especially since nobody better is available. Even more importantly, he epitomizes the type of outcast the Raiders help succeed in the NFL. Have faith, he’ll reward all of us for it.
May 19th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
MistaBrown…. Just going from my sometimes hazy memory, Seabass hit the uprights at least 6 times, last year, maybe more,, thunk
May 19th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
The game’s about making plays. Winning’s about making plays. That’s why we’re losing.
The game aint about “well he’s a nice guy, he deserves another chance” bs.
May 19th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Or, he is kicking on the infield. Give me a break!
Raiders up next on the NFLN!
May 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Agreed…but who do you replace him with? Doubt it, but if Jano misses a few in preseason, he could get replaced. Not sure the next great kicker is available right now.
Competition? All for it. If he gets beat, so be it.
May 19th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Just think that would be a mistake.

Wolverine, interesting you’d mention Bosworth to make the case that Bo Jackson was a football player. Bosworth was another physical specimen more or less forced into the game of football. He was no football player, himself. Bo lighting him up was merely two non football player-athletes going head to head, with Jackson coming out on top. Big whoop.
Now, Ronnie Lott is another story. But Ronnie Lott is also a safety and Jackson was a power half back, one of the biggest in the league (if not the biggest, and surely the fastest). Jackson beat him. Period. But it doesn’t change anything.
Jackson’s hip injury is indicative of him not being a football player. Someone said it’s because he doesn’t give up on plays? Duh! What football player is ever supposed to give up? It’s taught in pop warner; You go to you hear the whistle. Another Davis kool aid drinking cop out. But I see where you get the idea, because anymore most of the players Al brings in do indeed give up before the whistle…
Jackson was a superb athlete and there’s no doubt we got some mileage out of him. But he was no football player. He’s really not even built to be a football player. Hence, the hip injury. That’s a vulnerable part of the body. A football player has to be able to take a thousand shots there and bounce right back up. Bo couldn’t. One good shot and he was done…and so was that era of Raider football, thanks to Al Davis’s bonehead team building.
Bo Jackson was a great baseball player, but nothing more than a flash in the pan in the NFL. His NFL career doesn’t hold a candle to that of Marcus Allen’s.

Saintkaufman, the reason for Jerry’s post wasn’t to talk about the kicker per se, but to shed light on Al Davis’s poor style of management; In this case, making Jano a roster lock, despite him obviously sucking.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
You guys wanted a new post from Jerry, and you got it, on a platter. But because he didn’t sing you guys the “everything is ok in Alameda” lullaby, you’re all crying in your cribs.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Jerry, feed ‘em their chum. Make a new post contrasting the Raiders with the Cardinals, or something. I’m tired of hearing them bitch, frankly.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Hear that? It’s Wolverine and Bo Knew fishing for stats to make the case that Bo Jackson had a better NFL career than Marcus Allen. They’re going to come out with the yards per carry stat, and cling to that like a crack head clings to his last 10 piece.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Bo Jackson was a very powerful, very fast back. Not a real football player?
May 19th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Bo had a degenerative problem that affected the flow of blood to the hip. He was going to have a problem with it eventually no matter what he did. He was awesome…quick, fast and really big. I think he would have have broken all the records. It was big fun to watch him.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Yes Saint we are talking about the Kicker.
1- 1st round pick
2- Sucks
3- Scholarship
4- Decides games with his foot
Do you have a problem talking about the kicker ?
May 19th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
The insane argument that Bo wasn’t a “football” player totally ignores his college career… and is more so a baiting tactic by that person who loves to do just that… Bo was the best RB coming out of college since Hershal Walker…
May 19th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Marcus was a great back and Warrior, Hall of Famer, Classy, my wife used to watch him play.
I think Marcus could accept sharing the ball with Bo, it was he others that broke the camels back. (Dickerson, Craig)
May 19th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
It was a travesty to get run over by our own Marcus Allen… in a Chefs outfit… total travesty! I’m glad Howie just retired rather than do that…
May 19th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I disagreed when you said “Bo Jackson was no football player. He was an athlete, who overachieved as a football player. The man couldn’t take a hit.” I didn’t say anything about careers.
But keeping up with this argument really shows you definitely never played football in your entire life and probably weren’t even born when Bo played. How else could someone say Bo wasn’t a football player? It’s absolutely ridiculous as are most of your comments.
Say what you want about Mr. Davis and anything else you constantly rant about, but you are 100% wrong on this one.
There’s more to life than trying to get people upset and trying to bait me into something isn’t going to work.
Go Raiders.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Marcus gave way too much to this organization to be treated like he was. An he obviously wasn’t finished with his career.

let me se bo scored touchdowns , he trucked defenders was a all american at auburn, but wasn’t a football player. that the dumbest thing i heard all day. why is some dummy hating on bo , when he could’ve been one of the best backs in history. who’s trying to compare him to marcus allen,,, ? allen was an all time great , but lets not forget he faked an ankle injury when bo was putting it down. and thats what got him in the dog house with al davis…. if bo did’nt get hurt against cincy we would’ve beat the bills ” convincingly “. i know we’re waiting fo training camp and can’t wait for the season to start. but to sit here and hate on a former great is just stupid , and shows you are a true idiot, a villiage idiot retard and never wore pads except the kind you buy once a month

Hahahaha you are a very funny dude. You write so much yet never say a word. Lol “Kool-aid drinker” or the classic “homer”, how can you call someone a homer for rooting for their favorite team you ignoramus. Man you are on this blog day and night, make pointless arguments, and are braggadocious about “owning” someone on a blog where no one is competing.
You continually speculate about the Raiders’ orginization and then when someone else has an argument you ask about proof, as if you have ever presented any. I notice that you do that a lot, some brings you a great argument and you ask for proof, they provide proof in the form of quotes from the people involved and you discredit that with some outlandish reasoning or ask for further proof that would be impossible for any to attain.
Dude, seriously don’t ever get a girlfriend or even think about having sexual intercourse (if you ever have in the first place), I need your post to be at the top of their game and non-stop as usual. On the days i get some down time from working 2 jobs and the early stages starting my own business and i feel like at 21 yrs old that maybe im not doing enough, or that im wasting my time reading abot the Raiders, i just look at the number of posts you have and thank God that i dont have that much time on my hands. Between having sex and making money im jus too gosh darned busy. Keep the laughs coming my man, i really enjoy the entertainment from clowns like you. We here in the Raider Nation need a court jester, thanks for filling that role, that constant chuckle is us laughing at you not with you.

JMac slammin’ on Seabass for 2008, and he hasn’t even missed a FG yet!! Nice.
I’m sure Jano’s lapses did not go unnoticed by Kiffin. It’s a good idea to bring someone else in, but really, Seabass will NOT lose his job, so why even waste resources?
I like the way Kiffin uses Seabass, though. After last year’s 65yd attempt, I fully expect Jano to break the 63yd record once or twice in his career. It would be his only positive redemption & legacy.
I can’t wait for training camp to start!! Never have I been THIS optimistic for so many players:
-JaMarcus
-McFadden
-Walker & Carter
-DeAngelo & Nnamdi (will get more opps)
-Wilson & Huff (at FS)
-Spires & Edwards
Currently, my top 5 favorite Raider players ranking:
5. Zach Miller
4. Derrick Burgess
3. Thomas Howard
2. Darren McFadden
1. JaMarcus Russell
I’m hoping DeAngelo, Nnamdi, Gibril, or Javon step up to take Miller’s spot.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Raider Raul top 5 and you don’t say any thing about Fargas or Morrison. Fargas had a break out year and Morrison lead the team in tackles sence his rookie year, Curry who lead in rec. and was our key guy on 3rd down. I agree with Burgess, Miller but McFadden and Rusell are both unproven. They will have to prove themselves.

Bo Jackson was a very powerful, very fast back. Not a real football player?
…..
No. And his career is evident of it.
He didn’t get shot.
He didn’t get in a car wreck.
He didn’t even hurt his leg, which would be a legitimate reason to end a running back’s career.
He was tackled. That’s it. Tackled. And his hip went.
He was not built to be a football player, nor did he even want to play football. He only played for the Raiders to begin with because Al Davis was the only owner in football who was willing to give him a competitive running back’s yearly salary for a half season. No other owner was that stupid. Al was, and Bo jumped at the opportunity. And, by doing so, he probably ruined what could have been an illustrious baseball career, cloaked in awards and championships. Bo is a go getter. A real motivated person, and a superb athlete. But he never was a football player, and even he knew it. He wanted to play baseball. People forget that he only played in the NFL on the condition that he could play an ENTIRE baseball season. And, people call Marcus a wuss?
May 19th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Severe, fraud boy is SUCH a JOKE!!!! He is in here more than everyone else, he constantly gets totally crapped on, and some how he thinks HE’S getting over!! At first it was kind of funny, but for the last 6 months watching him get constantly flushed is kinda sad. His only comeback is to post as me, and then make gay references. If loser boy isn’t in the 6th grade then he really is a total loser.

Oakglenn, why are you always so worked up? It’s just a blog, man. Have a little fun.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
And, wow, anyone who became a fan of this team in ‘86 and is as loyal to Davis as you are must be a serious kool aid drinker. At least fans from the ’70s have a winning era to cling to. You’ve got nothing, other than what Gruden has brought us. Anyhow, I think I hear your old lady thundering down the hall. I can hear the pictures on your walls shaking. It’s time for lovin’! Catch up with me later, dude.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
OMG, you were born in ‘86! That explains a lot. You’re probably one of the oldest Davis loyalist in here, frankly.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Linds…post 140:
Great post and so right on. It was the ankle injury??? that started the friction between Marcus and Al.
Marcus, prior to that, was Mr. Raider, and his going to KC killed me everytime we played them. Especially his short yardage dives into the end-zone.
If Marcus and Al hadn’t had their problems, Marcus could have retired as a Raiders’ front-man, Public Relations-man, and still be associated with us today.
Look at Plunkett and Flores, Al has looked out for them and has kept them involved, among other Raider greats as well.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Florida Pete, MR, Dakota, you guys rock. Hilarious. Mr. AW’s Ghost, now we realists know that much of the nation indeed practices a “faith based” fanaticism. Check out what Jerry had to say about that a couple months ago. It was priceless.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I know oakglenn, it really is sad, i almost feel bad for the guy……almost. He needs to get a girl or a job in the worst way. I actually enjoy his post though, he has that, “at least I’m not him” affect on people. You have owned that mooncalf, moron, nimcompoop on more than one occasion on here, i guess he just loves being emabarassed. I think it was actually you that he had got into a debate with about something that Gruden had done and then you provided a direct quote from Gruden backing your claim, and then he came with some left field BS asking you to provide the contract and point out where in the contract it was expressed that he had the power to make the moves that he did.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
SeverRaider, anyone can get a fat chick, and I can tell by the way you brag about getting laid to a bunch of football fans that it’s with a mega moo. You’re not fooling anyone. Seriously, have you ever let her on top? Man, imagine if she really got into it… It would be off the ER, wouldn’t it?
Seriously, dude, tell us the truth. Over 250, right?
May 19th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Uh oh, with the handholding between Severraider and Oakglenn, we now have to wonder if they’re the same person. I’ve never seen Severraider before, and all of a sudden he’s making references to older Oakglenn posts. I think we’re caught, OG. Give it up.
And, if not, it could also mean that Severraider is into dudes, along with BBW’s.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
LOL. I’m going over “Severeraider’s” posts, and it’s definitely you, Oakglenn. Oak, if you own me, why are you posting under multiple names when responding to me? Come on. It’s beneath you. I always thought you made decent points, Oakglenn. I do have a little bit of respect for you. But not if you’re going to pretend to be multiple people whenever responding to me. You know what I do then. I just rip you and your alter egos to shreds, like I’m doing to your make believe “Severeraider” right now.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Oakglenn, since we now know that Severeraider is you, tell us, what’s your old lady tipping the scale at? You know, the one you’re bragging about? And, I didn’t know you were only 21. It must suck to be that young and already signing your life away to a big mama as your ball and chain. I’m guessing we’re from the old trailer park, Oak?
May 19th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Anyhow, back to football. Bo Jackson is not a football player. His hip was fragile. One shot, and it was all over. Smarter minds in this league saw that risk. But not Al Davis. There is no comparison between the careers of Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen. Marcus Allen is an NFL hall of famer and a champion. Bo Jackson was a flash in the pan. End of story.
May 19th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Its not oakglenn you tomfool moron, man u must have the biggest man crush on that guy. If anyone can get a fat chick, why havent you been laid since al davis had dark hair you loser. Its funny that i talk about getting laid by chicks and you call me a hand bag holder, you aren’t getting laid at all, i think we all know what you have had in your hand, wow it must be hard to type like that. Hope your keys are non-stick…..lol what a imbecile. Get a life you basement dwelling nitwit.

Kind of sad that at 21 you’re throwing in the towel so soon. But hey, probably runs in your family. Your mom is probably a bug un, as well. If it’s good enough for pops…

May 19th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
one of the most ignorant articles Jerry has written. Without question, janikowski has not lived up to his 1st rd status. We all know that. Get over it.
Jerry throws out stats, but doesn’t put them any context. The reason janikowski’s fg percentage is usually low is because he attempts an inordinate amount of 50+ field goals, and those are very low percentage kicks. Most coaches won’t even let their kicker try from 50+.
So let’s look at last year’s pro bowl kicker, Robbie Gould of the Chicago Bears. He had an 88.6 fg percentage. Fine, but how many times did he try from 50+? The answer is 2, and he was 0-2. And those were the only 2 he’s ever tried from 50+.
Gould is the pro bowl kicker (now highest paid kicker in the NFL), and in his three years in the league he’s a total of 0-2 at 50+. janikowski kicked 6 from 50+ last year alone. So while the Bears just give up and punt if they can’t get inside the 33 yard line, the Raiders roll out janikowski and, last year, his hits it more than he misses — 18 pts compared to Gould’s 0 pts.
Or compare with the Colt’s Adam Vinateri, considered one of the best. In his 12 year career, he’s tried a total of 19 from 50+ (janikowski tried 11 last year alone). Vinateri has never attempted more than 2 from 50+ in any of his 12 seasons.
In fact, Vinateri HASN’T MADE A KICK FROM 50+ IN THE LAST 5 YEARS. In the last five years, he’s 0-6 from 50+.
So of course janikowski’s overall percentage is lower, because the vast majority of teams don’t even try from 50+.
If the Raiders were like other teams and didn’t try from 50+, last year janikowski’s fg% would have been 81%. In 2006 it would have been 83%.
It’s idiotic to compare apples to oranges, comparing percentages of kickers who are never asked to kick from 50+ to a kicker that is routinely. It’s especially idiotic to criticize a kicker for missing a 57 yard field goal.
So what is Jerry’s Solution. Bring in Justin Medlock, he who’s longest NFL field goal is 27 yards, who made the 27-yarder, missed from 34, missed 1 of his 2 extra points, and was released by the Chiefs after 1 game.
Jerry finds it “maddening” that Janikowski hits 22 touchbacks but is “inconsistent.” How many touchbacks did pro bowler Robbie Gould kick? Answer: a total of 3 touchbacks.
So ask what you want: a kicker that averages about the same as others from less than 40 but gives you 18 pts of 6 fg from 50+ and adds 22 touchbacks or a kicker who can’t make a 50+ field goal and gives you 3 touchbacks?
Thankfully Jerry’s not an NFL exec, because we’d be living with the Josh McCowns and Justin Medlock’s of the world.
Jerry, be fair. It seems you have an axe to grind with Janikowski.
May 19th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
MR you are a moron. Al drafted Bo (the #1 pick the year before)in the 7th Round!!!!!!!!

Bo was a punishing back. Ask Mike Harden.
Bo was as fast a back that has ever played.

forgot to add, let’s take another look at Jerry’s GM skills, his suggestion that we bring in Morton Anderson (oops, threw up a little in my mouth), though he concedes Morton might be a little old.
In Morton Anderson’s last FIVE YEARS, he’s a combined 1-3 from 50+.
yeah, that’s what we need. Kickers who can’t kick long field goals or touchbacks.
Great idea, Jerry. Let’s bring in a kicker who was so awful that Chiefs released him after 1 game. That ought to improve the team.

#174 was a good post Pirate. Good research. I think we should add that one of the problems with Kiffin is his acceptance of scholarship players last year. …..specifically Josh McCown. He played guys that had a good attitude but had no real reason to be on the field. Tyler Brayton comes to mind. His personnel selection was detrimental to the team and I believe he was hypocritical for his selections.
Real competition is good and Janikowski needs to step things up although he has improved recently.

Kick his ass Seabass
May 19th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Seabass also made a long try and had the rulebook suddenly reverse itself on when a time out could be signaled. That little rule tweak didn’t even last an entire season, past a few weeks of not hurting teams other than the Raiders.
If he was in Denver he’d kick about 40 touchbacks a year as well. The fact is you pay the kick team to run and tackle, you’d rather kick off and make it part of the game plan. It’s the best way to get the butterflied out of a game, by hitting people after a full speed run. It puts an emphasis upon finishing plays as well.
Let Seabass be Seabass, the defense surrendered leads last year on a regular basis. Let’s make it a point of everyone pulling their own weight.
Also, the infield is in horrid shape. You cannot kick or run pass routes on hash placements to one side of the field for the first third of the season. If you can determine a way to make all of the factors nominal, maybe the consistency for attempts made in his numbers would reflect the same.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
It seems like Seabass misses FG’s including shorter ones in close games where he could have made the difference. I would be hesitant to see him go because he has so much ability, and I always think that the next year may be the one he puts it all together, but every year he dissapoints me. Maybe this year will be the one.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Raiderkoolaid: that is exactly how i feel. i want him because he does have a big leg but then he’ll miss an easy one.

Suggesting that Bo was a great baseball player — or a better baseball player than football player — is even more ridiculous than saying he wasn’t a real football player. Arguments posed by someone without a real argument to post.
Al’s bumbling ways brought Bo Jackson to the NFL world, and the entire sports world was better for it. To criticize anyone for bringing talent like that to a team shows how little the poster has to really argue about.
Was Bo a great pick, regardless of round? Ask any GM who ever drafted a player. Was Bo a great player? Ask any GM or coach who saw him play. Was Bo a great running back? Ask anybody who ever carried a football to answer that one.

# Bo Knew Says:
May 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
“How about open competition for reporters?”
………
Already exists. Always has. Every reporter is on the bubble, competing for his/her job, every single day. And, guess what, one of the things which determines rather or not a columnist keeps their job is how many hits they get on their blog. Jerry thanks you.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Bo was a flash in the pan. I’m sorry it offends so many of you, being that Bo Jackson was one of your aces in the hole for making the case that Al is some kind of genius.
Bo Jackson won no Super Bowls or even conference championships. He was the player Davis built around for four seasons.
Again, his NFL career ending injury was a hip injury, at the age of 28. That’s a bit too young to go out with a hip injury. And, he wasn’t even hit hard. It was just a normal tackle. As I said before, it was a matter of time. Like a boxer has a “glass jaw”, Bo had a glass hip. I find it amazing that people still fault Marcus for being injury prone. As it turns out, Bo Jackson was the most injury prone bust in Raiders history. That is a fact. 4 seasons. Gone at 28. With a hip injury. Only die hard Davis loyals herald this guy as a great NFL player. To everyone else, he was just a fine athlete that overachieved in this sport of men.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
#174, Pirate — Great post. There are lots of stats out there that show Jano is better than most kickers in the league (or in Raiders history), and has been since he was drafted — spectacular misses and all.
I wouldn’t trade Jano for another kicker in the league right now — and yes, that means I’m willing to accept him for exactly what he is…a good kicker with the potential to do great things, who still has time to do them.
Unlike bandwagoners and phony fans, I do not discard faith in my team’s players just because they’re not perfect. I support them as long as they show they deserve that support, and in the last 5-years Jano has earned his spot on this TEAM that has under-achieved so well. Jano is not the reason this team has been so atrocious — and his kicks have not been the reason we have lost so many games.
As a matter-of-fact, Jano’s tackles have actually kept us in games even longer. He might be a better kicker if he didn’t have to spend so much time tackling.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
MR – you are way off.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Bo Knew, as long as we’re talking competition and incentive amongst reporters, imagine if they passed a rule in the NFL where if an owner lost more than 60 games within a 5 year span, he would be forced to sell his share of the team and to relinquish any and all control of football operations?
May 19th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Jano sucks. Just because he has been a career raider doesn’t mean he is good. He is inconsistent and he is, in my opinion, mentally weak in pressure situations. Everyone who has watched a raiders game in the last seven years knew he was going to miss the second field goal try after Shanahan called that time-out last season because he chokes like a porn star with a bad gag reflex.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Just Win, it’s Bo’s hip that was way off. Way off from it’s socket. Face it, the guy just had an awkward genetic trait that made it impossible for him to be a football player. Football is a sport of men. You have to take hits. Bo couldn’t. One standard tackle took him out. Had the same thing happened to Marcus, he’d never hear the end of it.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Bo’s hip was his Curry(Achilles) heel? He wasn’t a gamer because he got injured? Joe Theismann sucked because he had weak ankles? What next?
May 19th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
ilove the raiders q liuve in oakland and the blocks is carxy so that ow the raiders should allways play i need a jersey
May 19th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Watch out, Just Win, you’re asking for it — you’re about to be called names, and your taste in women (or men) is going to be questioned. Ooooh.
Kind of like 9th-grade all over again.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
It had nothing to do with the hit or genetics MR, you don’t need to be cheap.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Get real, JWB. Theismann’s leg was snapped in half. Bo Jackson was put out of commission, for good, by a standard tackle. Honestly, bringing up Theismann does no justice to Bo. Had Theismann taken the same tackle that ended Bo’s career, Theismann would have bounced right back to the huddle. Stop digging your own hole.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
KoolKell, of course it wasn’t the hit. It was Bo’s weak hip. And, if it wasn’t genetic, what was it? Did he have a hip transplant before playing in the NFL? That was his hip, the one he was born with. As strong as the man was, as fast as the man was, he could not handle a shoulder pad going into that hip, and the Raiders learned that the hard way.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Let me clear something up, Bo Jackson is not a weak person. If I said that, I said so in error. Bo Jackson is a strong willed, determined person, and an exceptional athlete. But football is a game where you have to be able to sustain nonstop contact to just about every part of your body. Bo Jackson had a natural handicap in this regard. It’s a cold blooded fact. It is abnormal for an NFL career to be ended at the age of 28 with a hip injury, especially someone in the shape that Bo’s in, which was next to perfect.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Jano obviously suffered from sitting out most of preseason. Kicking in the Detroit game off the garbage infield for the first time in the season was not good. Either give him competition or make him play all preseason. Either way it’ll be better for him.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
My othopedic surgeon, who’s a big Raider fan from the day, said he saw how dangerous the injury was right away, watching on TV. The joint was killed.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
KoolKell, your surgeon is pulling your leg. He has to see an x ray before he could determine anything.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Nation, what is up??????? Looks like fun and games had by all. Some very funny stuff on this post. Hey coach how are u man?
May 19th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Did you see the play, it wasn’t a shoulder pad going into the hip, dude had Bo’s lower leg, Bo damned near jerked his leg off.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
You can diagnos but an Surgeon can’t?
May 19th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Every tackler tries to jerk the leg off of every single ball carrier he tackles, on every single play, Kell. It’s what they get paid to do. It’s standard.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Yeah, but not every Back generates the torque Bo did. Peace out.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Kell, what did I ever diagnose? I’m stating facts. You’re giving me a story of what your surgeon supposedly told you. The onus is on you to back that up. LOL. You guys are unreal!
May 19th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Yeh, peace out, Kell. And nice try with the imaginary surgeon story.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
If I could afford to send the Davis kool aid drinkers in here to some night school to take an adult course in debating, I would. It’s that bad in here.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
And, Kell, if Bo generated that much torque, the leg tackle couldn’t have injured him. He would have broken the tackle. Run that by your surgeon.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
My god. There has to be a name for the disease that Al Davis kool aid drinkers have. The ability to bounce around from theory to theory is just fascinating. Someone is going to do a study on it, someday.

May 19th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Complete dislocation of the hip joint is a very unusual hip injury–most commonly hip dislocations occur in high speed car crashes. However, hip subluxations, an injury where the ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint is pushed part of the way out of joint, are being recognized as a possible cause of hip pain in athletes. A hip subluxation is the type of injury that is thought to have ended Bo Jackson’s athletic career.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
During a Raiders playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals in 1990, Jackson suffered a serious hip injury which ended his football career and seriously threatened his baseball career. After Bo Jackson was tackled and lying in pain on the ground, he popped his hip back into place. In an interview on Untold, George Brett who attended the game said he asked the trainer what had happened to Bo. The trainer replied “Bo says he felt his hip come out of the socket, so he popped it back in, but that’s just impossible, no one’s that strong.”
Following surgery and rehabilitation on his injured hip, it was discovered that Jackson had avascular necrosis, as a result of decreased blood supply to the head of his left femur. This caused deterioration of the femoral head, ultimately requiring that the hip be replaced. Jackson missed the entire 1992 baseball season. When he announced soon after his surgery that he would play baseball again, many thought that goal to be unrealistic, especially at the Major League level.
May 19th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
mr your insane! for one bo didnt take a hit! two, he was tackled from behind and in trying to pull out he stretched out his leg further than it would go, pulling his joint out of his socket. you trying to discredit him as a football player makes no sense when yes he was a physical speicmen, he was one of the best players of his time.
May 19th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
so where is everyone
May 19th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Wow. Looks like MR has reached a new pychotic low.
First off, I am not Severeraider. 2ndly, every other word out of MR’s mouth is Oakglenn. Talk about ownage. Lastly when you have to fabricate conversations between two people who are raking you back and forth over the manure bin and that is the only way you can get back at them, you have absolutely NO GAME. As I reiterated earlier, this used to be funny. Now MR is just sad, deplorable and weak.

Hayes Daze, post 189:
Maybe you’re in a “daze.” It’s easy to call people “bandwagoners and phoneys,” because they don’t agree with you and, therefore, they’re not true Raiders’ fans.
You’re out in “la-la-land” so that doesn’t lend to your credibility. Most of us critical of Seabass feel that he hasn’t lived up to his #1 pick status. Over the years, he has consistently missed the big kicks, even many short ones, where he shanked to the left or right. He was suppose to be a “game-breaker” being drafted at #1 but he has never come close.
Maybe, this year, we can put Seabass at MLB (since he’s such a good tackler, according to you) and move
Morrison to strong side line backer.
See post 192, Just Win Baby, he’s more on point. I, for one, was one who knew that Seabass would miss that 2nd kick against the donkeys and make Shararat as happy as a June Bride.

May 19th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
anyone like the number #20 on dmc?
May 20th, 2008 at 12:07 am
i would have liked to see him in #32, but big al would probably have some nasty flash backs. lol
May 20th, 2008 at 12:13 am
Jona Fin…
Sure, why not. He picked it, out of available numbers so it must have some meaning to him.
The important thing is that Kiffin utilizes his skill properly and that Darren can transfer his amasing college runs to the NFL, and that he produces big time for us. We need to start beating our division rivals on a consistent basis. We need to put the cooks, donkeys and dischargers in their places…below us in our division. Hopefully, Darren will play a big part in doing so.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Hey, JonaFin, maybe he picked number 20 because he’s just 20 “freaking” years old! That is so crazy! He’s so young and he can only get better, faster and stronger over the next 2 to 7 years. The sky is the limit. Can you imagine the nightmare we would have had to endure in the future if the Cooks would have got him, or Shanarat had moved up to #3 just to get over on Al, who he hates more than anyone in the whole world.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Jerry,
Thanks for stoking the fire. Nothing like bashing one of the two non football players to get the minions fired up.
Where to start? I was thrilled when Jano was drafted. I was jumping for joy that the Raiders picked the best kicker in College to come in and make some of the kicks that cost the Raiders 6-7 games the year before.
Has he lived up to expectations……..sometimes. Everytime he puts a ball out the back of the endzone on a kickoff, when he hits the 50+ yarder outside in freezing temps.
Do I think he will ever “live up” to expectations…No. I don’t think there will ever be a freeking kicker that could. The chump in NE that put the dagger in our hearts, jumped ship and hasn’t been the same. I smile inside knowing he’s miserable.
Jano is the best option we have. He is the best option in the NFL IMHO. I can’t think of another kicker I would want to don S&B, period.
I also don’t think we will see him line up for another 60+ yard FG attempt. With the season Kif had last year, I hope we never see ANY of the stupid calls we saw last season.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:52 am
riverside, just posing a question and see what people thought. i think that he is some that can wear 32 and bring that number some pride like past players. thats all. plus fargas wore 20 when he first got here and it just didnt sit well with me.
May 20th, 2008 at 1:14 am
MR > Now you’re just being stupid. Some times you make a couple of good points against the guys who back Al Davis up without using their brain, but you’re logic in the Bo case is faulty.
Bo was not a great baseball player, he was not a complete player, but he was above average in some categories.
Bo WAS a great football player. He performed, he had the numbers and beat the opposition. He got hurt on a freak play. That’s it. Saying he got hurt because he wasn’t a good football player is stupid.
May 20th, 2008 at 1:17 am
Now MR…a more compelling and logical argument is:
Marcus Allen was a GREAT Raider, and Al dicked Marcus for the alure of the greatness of Bo, but it backfired because Bo got hurt and Marcus went on to keep scoring touchdowns and winning. He beat us time and time again.
The truth of the matter is that Al was not loyal to Marcus and went for Bo and it was a bad move!
May 20th, 2008 at 1:20 am
and I’ll stick with Seabass……he had a good year last year, period. He missed some long ones, but was consistent inside 50 yards.
It’s great having a kicker who you can send out on the field for a FG over 55 yards and have a real chance of making it. Mark my words….he’s going to win a game this year with a long FG over 55 yards. Kiffin is not affraid to use Jano in that way.
May 20th, 2008 at 1:39 am
everyone fall asleep, or are we just waiting for the next controversial post?
May 20th, 2008 at 2:21 am
Fine, Seabass needs some competition – but he is still the best option. He just needs to apply a bit more finesse, instead of just trying to kick the laces off every ball. Power ain’t everything. Morten Anderson would actually be a good mentor/coach for Seabass.
No, the real questions are still:
1) Who will be the back-up QB(s) behind JR?
AW doesn’t really fit the system and doesn’t have Lane or Greg’s confidence. Meyer and Otis will be gone by September. Dilfer is a great guy, good influence but isn’t going to scare any defense. Culpepper is still available but doesn’t want to back-up anybody. I like Leftwich – but nobody else does! Perhaps Lane is awaiting the Tampa QB fall-out. I can’t imagine Chris Sims wanting to come out West but Bruce Gradkowski could be an option.
2) Who will start at Center?
John Wade has the pedigree and the experience, but will he fit the system? Jake Grove is still Mr Unfulfilled Potential – too many sub-par performances, too many injuries, too many chances. Chris Morris is the springer – he loves the system, Cable loves his intelligence and mobility. And what about Jesse Boone? I suspect that Morris is a roster lock because of his flexibility.
3) What is the best DLine combination?
Kelly (if fit and well) is a lock at DT – too much money and credibility has been invested in him. Sands is the obvious partner but only the 2006 version, not the 2007 washout. Warren has the ability to press Kelly and threaten Sands, he just needs to find the consistency of intencity. Joseph is the unknown – a real disappointment in NY but has all the physical gifts. I think Richardson is earmarked to start at DE, he did well last season and is effective against the run. Burgess, Spires and Edwards will compete for game-time as the pass rusher. Burgess is looking more and more vulnerable. If his motivation isn’t 110%, I can imagine the Raiders looking for a trade. He still has value and this might be a good moment to take the deal.
May 20th, 2008 at 3:23 am
True true true, He needs to be challenged & pushed to higher standards like all the rest of the team!
May 20th, 2008 at 6:25 am
This actually speaks well of the Raiders. If the team has improved to the point where the weak link is now identified as SeaBass, then Al Davis has put together a team that truly threatens even the best. In the past, SeaBass was regarded as a standout on this team. So with better players and greater success around him, he should also succeed. If not, I can assure you this will be his last with the Raiders.

GOOOOO Lakers!!!!!!!!!!!
May 20th, 2008 at 6:36 am
SDuran, I don’t think Jerry Is identifying THE weak link, per se. I think he is merely pointing out an inconsistency in philosophy, which is competition at every position.
May 20th, 2008 at 7:01 am
In 2007, Janikowski had the longest average yards per attempt in the NFL at 42.7. This was one of the reasons why he had the 4th worst FG success-rate of 72%. The top two FG kickers (Scobee and Reed) had success rates of 92%.
However, the extra distance doesn’t entirely excuse the inaccuracy. Janikowski needs to improve – he is just fortunate that there doesn’t seem to be an obvious alternative available.
May 20th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Exla,
Lakers in 5. Lakers take games 1 & 2. Spurs scratch out game 3. Lakers demoralize the Spurs in game 4 and then finish them off in game 5.
Pistons, here we come. (Pistons in 6 over Boston)
37 or so titles between the four teams in the conference finals….wow, must be a record.
May 20th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Hmmmm, Chris Carr, another former Raider player popping off about how strange the Raiders work…how can you Al Davis apologists ignore the fact that people that have been much closer to the situation than you fans that the Raiders are dysfunctional? I can’t wait for Al Davis to go away.

It’s funny, the people who wanted McFadden the most owe it to that “crazy old demented coot of an owner” Al Davis. If Al wasn’t “senile” he would have gone for defense in the draft. No one else on the Raiders staff would have pushed for McFadden.

#174 post was very informative…
By the way Marcus sounds like a great PR man to have representing your business…
http://www.cjonline.com/stories/043098/new_marcusoj.shtml
Hey Madden did you ever watch Bo & Marcus play at the same time? I’m betting not, so let’s refresh your memory
1987 G GS Att Yds TD Lng Y/A Y/G A/G
Marcus Allen 12 12 200 754 5 44 3.8 62.8 16.7
Bo Jackson 7 5 81 554 4 91 6.8 79.1 11.6
**Bo Jackson averages 3 MORE YARDS PER CARRY than Marcus and a long run that’s twice as far as Marcus not bad for a non-football player.
1988
Marcus Allen 15 15 223 831 7 32 3.7 55.4 14.9
Bo Jackson 10 9 136 580 3 25 4.3 58.0 13.6
**The only year where Marcus didn’t look like a complete hack next to Bo. Great 3.7 yards/carry marcus.
1989
Marcus Allen 8 5 69 293 2 15 4.2 36.6 8.6
Bo Jackson 11 9 173 950 4 92 5.5 86.4 15.7
**LOL! Twice as many carries, 3 times as many yards, plus 1.3 yards more a carry.
1990
Marcus Allen 16 15 179 682 12 28 3.8 42.6 11.2
Bo Jackson 10 0 125 698 5 88 5.6 69.8 12.5
**Again LOL! 54 less carries, 16 more yards and nearly 2 more yards per carry than Marcus. This was one of Al Davis’s worst GM moves wasn’t it MaddenWhiner.
Also, let’s see where internet sensation and expert GM MaddenWhiner’s comment of Bo Jackson ‘was not a football player’ ranks up against experience NFL personnell, staff, etc.
“He’s one of the finest backs who has ever played the game.” Johnny Majors.
“He’s the highest-rated pro football prospect that ever came out.” Dave Hanner,Scout,Green Bay
“Very possibly, you’re looking at the finest athlete this country has seen in the last 50 years.” Boomer Esiason.
“He’s just too big & too fast for us cornerbacks to bring down. Linebackers, too. I’ve never seen an athlete like him before.” Mike Haynes.
“I don’t think we’ll see a running back of his magnitude, speed, grace, power & excitement for quite some time.” Vince Evans.
“The guy is the greatest back I’ve ever played against. He’s flat-out the best I’ve seen.” Randy Dixon
“I’ve never seen anyone so fast & so strong. When God was handing out talent, Bo got it all.” Linden King.
“If he devoted himself to football, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’d be the greatest ever to play the game.” Tim Goad.
“Yes, I played against him when I was on the 49ers. Bo Jackson, had he not got hurt, would have gone down as one of the greatest running backs of all time.” Ronnie Lott

The Patriots have the easiest schedule in the NFL (their opponents have a cumulative 2007 winning percentage of .387), largely because they don’t have to play the Patriots. Then come, in order, the Chargers (.422), Raiders (.438) and Broncos (.445).

Mr=masturbates repeatedly
Does Mr work for the oakland tribune??? He posts more than Jerry. I’m at work reading some of this guys posts, its like he just copies and pastes all his old arguments, and throws in a few new insults for flavor. This guy is hella weak, someone should do a study on the behavior of basement dwelling bloggers and he would be the perfect candidate for said study. I bet he was a former football player that tried out for the Raiders and got cut and now he holds some type of grudge against Al, and blames him for his own athletic shortcomings.
He prollly lays on his futon in his moms basement and now thinks he is some type of expert because he logs so many hours playing Madden ‘08. There are rapist and child molesters that are in jail facing long prison sentences and saying to themselves, “this guy makes me look good”, he has a sad existence. Me personally I like egging the guy on, its entertainment, buts its starting to get a little predictable. Hey mr, can u have a football debate without insulting someone, didn’t think so. You are like one those little kids in that if someone disagrees with you you call them a liar or insult them, come on, you’re a 40yr old man and u live in your moms basement, don’t throw stones if u live in a glass house.

First the Mayan Calander, now the labor agreement.
2012 is shaping up to be a crappy year.
May 20th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Well Dakota, I guess you agree with me that Chris Carr said nothing specific in his interview, and yet you’re using the MaddenWhiner logic of calling people sheep that don’t agree with madness.
Let’s take a closer at Chris Carr shall we. He’s only been in the league 3 years and with only 1 organization. I’d say this would not classify him as an expert as to the inner workings of an organization.
But let’s look at what Chris Carr has done on the field…He has 1 interception(granted a biggie, but it was thrown right to him) in three years. And his return production, let’s see…
2005, he was 52nd in KO return average, and 39th in punt return average
2006, he was 23rd in KO returns, and 37th in punt return average.
2007, he was 60th in KO return average & 36th in punt return average(he had these duties taken away from him)
Of course what is Chris Carr’s reasoning as to why he wasn’t returning punts last year?
“I did punt return my first two years, and last year was kind of off and on. Like in Oakland, there’s a lot of stuff going on there that you don’t understand. It’s just whatever.”
Does this sound like someone intelligent or someone that doesn’t realize he was benched and discarded because he was given the primary job duty of returning the ball where his best year was worst than 70% of the NFL.
And then he comes up with this nugget…Asked if any of his ex-teammates in Oakland were envious of his escape to Tennessee, Carr said, “I’ll plead the fifth on that one. They’re trying as hard as they can in their situation, so I won’t comment on that one.”
Funny, because that’s not what Jarrod Cooper has to say.
http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/2008/05/08/former-raiders-cant-seem-to-contain-their-enthusiasm/
“Chris Carr is gonna’ get JACKED UP!”
So Dakota I ask, could it possibly be that you’re the sheep with the flock under the direction of a shepard who is one of the worst return men & DB’s in the NFL.
May 20th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Riverside — I certainly wasn’t implying that anyone who disagreed with me wasn’t a real fan, I’m not that stubborn. But, I do see how my words may have been interpreted that way. When I wrote it, I was in the midst of someone who needed to see it.
Anyway, we can disagree on Jano — no prob. Won’t be the first time and won’t be the last. I respect your opinion. The fact that you’re wrong doesn’t make you any less of a fan…
May 20th, 2008 at 9:43 am
And that la-la-land comment really hurts. You’re much closer physically and emotionally to that scene.
May 20th, 2008 at 9:48 am
K-Rock- I am with you, just when the team has matured for a run….Maybe the NFL should not bother with the agreement at the beginning of the year since according to the Mayan calender everything stops on 12/23/2012 marking the return of Quetzalcoatl and from what i understand he is not a big football fan.

Post #254; I’m all aout being real, so is it Marc Wilson threw like a girl or Maria Sharapova throws like Marc Wilson?
As far as the Bo/MR “controversey;” those whom reside in “realityworld” know Bo’s hip injury was the result of Bo attempting to utilize his significantly more than human strength to extracate himself from an impossible to overcome tackle. If Bo had merely acquiesced to the initial contact instead of going for additional yardage he would have lived to “break the bank” for an undeterminable duration.
Legend were the similar circumstances Bo was able to avoid. Earlier that year in Denver Bo hurdled a pile near the line of scrimmage. Upon landing he immediately encountered a Bronco safety which he preceeded to run over &, subsequently, sprint the rest of the way for a 50 yard touchdown. Never seen the likes of it before or after.
Ignore all MR postings. He, like Charger Fan will go (or post under an alias/somebody else) away. Something about crickets.
Bo & Gayle Sayers reside in the same “infamous” house. Avoiding injury they would have been the standard barriers for all NFL genetically mutant running backs. Sorry, Jim Brown, barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, et. al., a close second is the best y’all could hope for (ardent respect for the aforementioned all time greats).

More fuel to stoke the bonfire that was Bo…
To say that Bo wasn’t a football player, one should compare Bo’s career to that of the average football player at his position. If the average career for NFL players lasts somewhere around 4-years (I think it’s less), and the average career for a RB is just over 4-years…then, Bo did put down a solid 4-year baseline to compare him to other “real” football players.
What Bo did in his average-length career was amazing. He put up numbers that made people compare him to the great Jim Brown. He blew away the steady Marcus’s numbers at every opportunity. Regardless of other issues — Marcus couldn’t keep Bo #2 no matter what he did. Bo simply blew-away the future Hall Of Famer on the field.
Marcus made a living being a steady back with great hands (fumbles aside – he wasn’t as bad as some will say) and carving-up goal-line defenses. His singular trademark play is the unbelievably great run in the Super Bowl. Marcus had a great career, but I don’t know if he’d be in the Hall if his career only lasted 10-years.
If Bo made it to 6 or 7-years, he would’ve put up Hall Of Fame numbers. If the Hall Of Fame threw-out their out-dated and biased election procedures — and truly represented the greatest players ever to step on a field — Bo’s bust would be there alongside the running backs he outshined during his brilliant career.

Chris Carr’s ability to return kicks or play defense is totally irrelevant as to whether or not he is right about strange things going on in Oakland. Pirate – post 174. Thank you for doing the research on Jano I didn’t have time to do. (but suspected)
The reality is that when Jano tries a 60+ yard kick and hits the upright, morons scream that he sucks. Fact is, he gave us a shot no other kicker would have.
As for inconsistent touchbacks – Please! He is THE MOST CONSISTENT TB Kicker in the NFL by percentage! He is so good at it, when he doesn’t hit one, people scream that he sucks. They cheer when Gould hits a TB because it is a frickin miracle.
People talked about the offense not “punching it in” and taking FG’s. With Jano it isn’t a case of “punching it in”. He’s taking shots from midfield!
Complaining that Jano misses too many 50 yarders is silly. If Russell throws the ball 50 yards but is incomplete, then he stinks? Better to have a guy who can never make the throw?
Nedney? LOL How soon we forget. Nedney from 50+ please. Nedney touchbacks?
Considering how teams includinng the Colts and Pats have changed kickers so many times since we drafted Jano it has been Jano who has been the consistent one. Wouldn’t have taken him in the 1st round but that in of itself doesn’t mean he stinks.

Jano could be worse, but he has been a disappointment when you consider the hype and draft position…

May 20th, 2008 at 11:54 am
I’d like to know that Jano’s Numbers were inside of 40 yds? He has 34 attemps over 50? I highly doubt that many kickers have half that number in attemps. Longer field goals are harder to make…that’s why you see Hole in ones mostly on par 3s not par 4s, even Tiger has trouble hitting the driver in the fairway all the time…distance will exagerate any off-center Kick. Jano attempts kicks most other coaches wouldn’t think about trying. I also would like to see the Kick # done in 5 yd increments. My guess is that Jano is NAILs from 45 yds or less…I mean there is a huge differnece between a 41 and 49 yd field goal attmept, as well as 50 yd try and a 57 yd try. Jano is a weapon that really no other team has, and I know one day will make a big long field goal to win a game…its just those opportunities are few and far between.
May 20th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Jano btw was 10 of 11 inside 40 yards last year. That’s right – He was the only kicker in the NFL to have the same number of attempts from over 50 as under 40.
That’ll work wonders on your average.
Under 40 – 10 of 11
40-49 – 7 of 10
50+ – 6 of 11 (including 60+ jobs)
Oh he would’ve been 7 of 11 if not for the Shanny time-out.
Also – He hit 32.8% of his kickoffs for touchbacks. Five percent more than anybody else in the league. (with at least 10 kickoffs)
May 20th, 2008 at 11:57 am
i think if Janikowski were on some other team…
we would be wanting him here…
and i do remember the mid to late 90’s when it seemed like we were losing too many games by less than 3 points…
and a missed field goal seemed to be a part of the equation…

May 20th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Vinatari is no Vinateri on another team. Jano has been in few positions to kick game winning FG’s in the last 5 years. Didn’t Jano hit a couple FG’s in the same snow (tuck) game Vinateri did? When Jano is going for a win, it isn’t like these guys booting 32-yarders. He’s trying 52 yarders to win it. In that situation we have better than 50% chance to come away with a win.
Other teams throw hail mary’s from that field position which have what, a 3% success rate?
Yeah he was a 1st rd pick but if he hadn’t drafted him we could’ve drafted a Tyler Brayton or Fabian Washington. It’s not like a guarentee we would’ve gotten someone better.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I agree with Pirate arrggghhh on 174 and with COW.
But one thing is for sure about Jano, last year´s training camp-preseason “approach” didn´t work out.
He started the season in a funk, going 1 for 5 the first 2 games. After that, he went 22 for 27 and that included 58 and 64 yard misses.
As for 50 plus kicks, he was 6 of 8 from up to 54 yards…3 of his misses came from 57, 58 and 64.
Jano´s 22 Touchbacks led the lague last year, he´s either led or finished in 2nd place in TB´s 4 out of his 8 seasons and only once failed to finish outside the top 10.
He´s also 14 for 16 in playoff games, hopefully he´ll soon have a chance to pad his playoff stats.
And when you cringe remmebering he was a 1st round pick, just remember that Jerry has said in the past that, according to the staff, Sylvester Morris would have been the pick if not Jano.

Coach On Wheels: Post 318:
Spin it anyway you want, but for many of us out thinking and our feelins are the same. Stats don’t win games and that’s what we’re talking about.
Seabass at a #1 pick was suppose to be the “game-breaker.” He wasn’t a QB, a running back, a corner or line backer. He was a “freaking kicker @ #1.”
Over the years, when we needed his kick to make a difference…he didn’t come through. Under pressure he folds…either shanking it too left or too right.
As Just Win Baby pointed out in his response, most of us knew that Seabass would miss that second kick against Shanarat and make the rats’ day.
Ya, he can be a good kicker at times…blah blah blah.
But if your life was on the line, you would want him making the kick…not under pressure.
There really should be no argument. We in Raider Nation want him to be successful, we wish him the best, but, NEVERTHELESS we’re disappointed over his productivity after being a number one draft pick.

Well, according to Jerry the staff liked WR Sylvester Morris who went to KC 3 or 4 picks later. He´s been out of the league for a while now.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
oh, man, that’s just dumb !!!!
did Janikowski draft himself ???
no ???? than why hold that against him ???
oh… and anyone who says they absolutely knew Jano was gonna miss the second 53 yarder IS A LOSER…
because that IS how losers think…
i’ll take Jano and his beer gut (and his occasional TD saving tackles) over any other kicker in the league right now…
damn… you wanna hold his draft position against him ??? that’s just dumb…
he should be a game changer ??? what, you want him to call the plays now…
the only thing Jano needs is a pre-season like everyone else…

Back to reality… I have put in my 2 or 3 cents in on Seabass already, but I will add this thought.
I think that this season, Seabass will NOT be trying as many 40-50 yrd. attempts, for that the offense will not be stalling out on as many drives.
I have three reasons for openers, on why I think this will happen
1] Mike Bush, will not get stopped on short yardage.
2]D Mac will be deadly on 3rd & 4-8 plays, turning them into long gains or better yet, T.D.s
3] J Russ will be able to make that tight throw on, 3rd & 7 or better.
All of the above, we did not have last year.
( throwing out Russell’s starts)
Thus, Seabass will not have to try so many long FG attempts.
May 20th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
And about Sylvester Morris, don´t take it from me, Jerry wrote about it, make of it what you will.
“Could have had: The name everyone brings up here is Shaun Alexander, who went to Seattle at No. 19 and became a touchdown machine. Problem is, the Raiders were happy with Tyrone Wheatley and Napoleon Kaufman and had they not taken Janikowski, were set to go with Jackson State’s Sylvester Morris. Morris went No. 21 to Kansas City, suffered a serious knee injury, and never made an impact.”
Jerry McDonald, April 10th, 2008.

McFadden will not get more than Russell got last year. There is an extra premium on QBs, plus his deal was for 6 years.
Jake Long, the #1 over all got 30 mil guaranteed for 5 years.
I guess it will depend more on what Chris Long gets.

I’ll ask again Dakota, why didn’t Carr cite something specific for us instead of just painting us with a broad brush…Is it possible that this guy is disgruntled? THE CASE FOR JANIKOWSKI
(And no, I don’t mean Pabst Blue Ribbon)
The thing you have to account for with Janikowski’s FG% is that fact that he is often asked to hit 55+ yard shots. Not many kickers even try those kind of kicks. It’s hard to blame him for missing.
If you take away Janikowski’s 11 tries last year from 50+ (of which he went 6-for-11), he was an 81% kicker. By comparrison, the league’s top percentage kickers were Jeff Reed and Josh Scobee at 92%. However, the top 4 kickers in the league COMBINED only tried a total of THREE kicks from 50+, of which they made 1. So while Janikowski essentially misses about 10% more of the same kicks as the league’s most accurate guys, he also gave the Raiders 18 points those guys wouldn’t have.
Additionally, Janikowski was in the top-10 in FG attempts from 40+ yards. Inside 40 yards he went 10-for-11.
His 11 tries from 50+ were the most in the NFL. The next highest was Neil Rackers (who was just 3-for-9). Nobody else tried more than 5 from 50+. Janikowski made more from 50+ than anyone in the league and had misses from 57, 64, 58. Those are three absolute bombs. Take those away and he’s 6-for-8 from 50+. One of those last two misses from 50+ was blocked. The other was the one in the infamous OT game against Denver where he nailed it from 52, only to have it called back on Shanny’s timeout, then narrowly miss on the 2nd try.
I’ll admit that Janikowski hasn’t been great with accuracy and clutch kicking, but if you look back at the year he was drafted, I bet he’s had a better career than half the guys selected in the first round with him. Nobody ever considers that when they snicker about the Raiders picking a kicker in the 1st round.
And come on, has there ever been a kicker in the history of the NFL that was a better fit for the Raiders persona than Seabass?
May 20th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
YOU KILL ME. NAME ONE KICKER WE CAN REPLACE JANO WITH… NUFF SAID.

May 20th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Yeah, we’re stuck Jano for now. I Remeber his first KO as a Raider at home when he whiffed badly and fell on his arse barely getting off a awful looking kick. That’s the day I knew we missed with this over hyped #1 pick. This guy’s clutch burned out in college. Perhaps his brain too. The misses will continue until he leaves town. And that just sucks!

May 21st, 2008 at 7:33 am
I agree 100%. Seabass’s best days are behinfd him. Way too inconsistent. Think back to the Denver game last season. Great kickers make them both.
May 21st, 2008 at 9:20 am
Competition breeds excellence. I believe bringing in someone to push Seabass a little would be perfectly in order. Maybe he’d actually hit that second attempt in Denver.

Great point here. No one on the team needs to be pushed more than this slacker. He has been stealing money since he got here. I would bring in 2-3 guys to compete with him. Sure he’s put in tough situations having to kick big balls, but as you said, that’s what he’s paid for.
