June 5th, that has to be a record for us, Dude I’m so happy, speachless.
June 5th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Sweet. We are back to doing what we do and better yet: we’ll have everyone signed before training camp for sure. We’ve rarely had rookie holdouts, save Rob Frederickson, until JaMarcus, who happens to be our only Number One pick/franchise quarterback to date. Perhaps it’s mentioned by some of the local beat or blogger writers, but the larger, national media seems to portray us as having problems signing players, especially how they present and re-present how JaMarcus is the longest hold out since Bo Jackson, and by omitting that it was Tampa he held out from furthers the perception. I think Timmy didn’t have his contract worked out but he signed a camp contract so he could practice till the negotiations yielded the contract—if memory serves.
We shouldn’t be surprised with what we accomplish this year, but the national pundits will have to pucker and report our exploits through gritted teeth.
Welcome, Darren, to the Raider Nation.

Thec,
And the finger should be the second half of a Peace sign only too! I think we’ll play well enough that the haters will have to (from their perspectives ‘unfortunately’) report the facts, W’s and L’s, baby. Nothing like building a lead to give the appearance of a great run defense!

June 6th, 2008 at 12:27 am
I don’t see how they are going to be able to pay all of these salaries. How can they get a deal done with Nnamdi? Where are the Raiders with cap space now? Even if they dump Jordan, he will still count against the cap the next 2 years.
I am in just in awe of the money being thrown around by Davis.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:28 am
russel will get time to learn how to throw to this guy…

last time raiders had exciting run game it was with kauffman… I think he retired with something over 5 yards a carry… If this will be anything like that I will be happy
June 6th, 2008 at 1:22 am
Its good to see the Raiders didnt loligag around this time with signing our 1st rnd. pick. What this says is that the Raiders are done playing silly games (for now) and that they’re ready to go back to being the real football organization they once were for many years. Burgess lighting it up again, Hall snatching ints. Carter and Miller making TD catches, getting picks signed on time, these are the type of positive moves that will bring us back to the wining seasons we’ve been starving for. Now all the Raiders have to do is put the cherry on top by releasing Lamont (doughboy) Jordan, and resigning Naamdi. People call me crazy when I tell ‘em we’re going 11-5 this year, but I believe it. For real. There will be some bumps on the road but I believe we’re back in the mix again. YA KNOW?!

ALAMEDA, Calif. — For all the positive developments coach Lane Kiffin has seen during the Oakland Raiders’ offseason workouts, he still knows it’s far too early to make any pronouncements about how the team will fare this season.
Jed Jacobsohn / Getty Images
Darrren McFadden will give the Raiders a threat out of the backfield, and the team hopes to have him signed before training camp starts.
» McFadden’s draft profile
A few things have stood out so far at the start of year two of Kiffin’s tenure as coach. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell looks much more comfortable after starting only one game as a rookie and first-round pick Darren McFadden could provide a game-breaking element that has been missing on offense in recent years.
But with the team practicing without pads and contact, there are still plenty of unanswered questions that will determine whether the Raiders can end a five-year string of losing.
“You want to figure it all out right now and so do we,” Kiffin said. “How good are we going to be on offense, defense? But we don’t even have pads on. So there’s a ton of work to go and a million things that will happen between now and then. Our roster will change, our depth chart will change, so all we’re trying to do is get individuals better and that will help our team.”
The Raiders held their fifth and final practice of their mandatory minicamp on Thursday, marking the last time the whole team will be together until training camp. Oakland still has two weeks of voluntary workouts remaining and Kiffin expects most of the players to be on hand for those.
Kiffin has singled out a few players for praise this week, including Russell, McFadden, second-year receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins, free agent receiver Drew Carter and free agent left tackle Kwame Harris.
Harris’ play at left tackle could be a key for the Raiders this season as they want to make sure they have a line that will protect Russell. Harris struggled across San Francisco Bay with the 49ers before signing with Oakland this offseason as a free agent.
He has taken well to the zone-blocking system of assistant Tom Cable and both he and the team believe the new start was just what he needs.
“It’s been nice to get in there and kind of have it all thrown at you at once,” Harris said. “But it’s good. I feel like I’m making progress, feel like I’m playing well. There’s still a lot of work I have to do, still a lot of things that I still need to make a habit of. But it’s June, it’s still early.”
After having the worst line in the league in 2006, Oakland showed big signs of improvement last year under Cable. The Raiders ran for the sixth most yards in the league and cut their sack total from 72 to 41. But they still struggled to protect their quarterbacks and often didn’t have time to run longer developing routes.
While Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle are established as starting guards, there are questions at the other three line spots even though Harris appears to have the inside shot at left tackle. Chris Morris has got the bulk of time at first-team center ahead of free agent John Wade this week while Mario Henderson and Cornell Green are competing at right tackle.
“That unit needs to come together just like it did a year ago,” Kiffin said. “They’ll be a key to our team as they were before. We’ve got to figure out the center and get the left tackle going and make sure we have the right guy at right tackle and go from there.”

There are some other moves the Raiders will try to make before training camp begins. The team is trying to trade running back LaMont Jordan, who was told to stay away from practice this week. A deal seems unlikely considering Jordan’s $4.7 million salary for this season and he could be cut instead.
The major move that the Raiders would like to accomplish before camp begins July 25 is to sign first-round pick Darren McFadden. McFadden’s agent Ian Greengross was in town this week and talks have begun between the two sides. McFadden has expressed a strong desire to be signed before camp starts and the Raiders want to avoid another holdout after Russell missed the entire preseason a year ago.
“You always like them signed right away from my standpoint, the coaching side of it,” Kiffin said. “But you always have to do what’s in the best interest of the future of the organization. Hopefully it’ll get done and it’s something both sides can agree upon. Right now it doesn’t affect anything. Would we like to have a holdout? No we wouldn’t, because there’s so many things we want to do with him right away.”
Two of the three players picked before McFadden have already signed their deals with No. 1 pick Jake Long getting a $57.75 million, five-year contract with $30 million guaranteed from Miami and third pick Matt Ryan getting a $72 million, six-year contract with $34.75 million guaranteed from Atlanta.

ALAMEDA – The Raiders spent freely to retain players and lure free agents to Oakland.
Along the way, one of the Raiders’ most valuable defensive players became one of their bargains.
The Raiders have not promised to boost defensive end Derrick Burgess’ salary to the going rate for two-time Pro Bowl defensive ends, even as lesser lights at his position cash in.
But would the Raiders restructure his deal?
“Nah,” he said. “That wasn’t one of the things we really talked about. I only worry about the (stuff) I can control, ya dig?”
Burgess, 29, said former personnel executive Mike Lombardi last year promised a new deal to Burgess, coming off his second consecutive Pro Bowl following the 2006 season.
But Lombardi was fired, and Burgess never got a new contract to supercede the five-year, $17.5 million deal – with $6 million guaranteed – he signed in 2005. Sure, that’s not the veteran’s minimum, but some players would have complained anyway.
Burgess could have joined the list of NFL players publicly demanding a trade directly (see Chad Johnson the last few months) or indirectly (Miami’s Jason Taylor).
Burgess hasn’t participated in voluntary workouts, opting to work out at Mississippi, where he played college football. That doesn’t concern the Raiders, though, since Burgess never works out in California during the offseason.
“Spend time with my family and everything,” Burgess said. “Ain’t none of my folks out here.”
He showed up for this week’s mandatory minicamp in shape and displayed the quickness that makes him difficult to block.
If his contract is bothering him, you wouldn’t know.
“Derrick has handled himself with great class,” said Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, acknowledging that several players around the league and on the Raiders earn more than Burgess.
The Raiders gave Tommy Kelly the richest deal for a defensive tackle in league history: seven years for $50.5 million with $18.125 million guaranteed. The team retained defensive tackle Terdell Sands last year with a four-year, $17 million deal that guaranteed $4 million.
And when the team traded for defensive tackle Gerard Warren, the Raiders inherited Warren’s contract from 2006, which was for six years and $36 million with $10 million guaranteed. Burgess had eight sacks in 14 games last season while suffering from a calf injury.
That tied Chris Clemons for the team lead last season. Clemons subsequently signed as a free agent with Philadelphia in a five-year deal reportedly worth up to $18.5 million.
Even if Burgess were to raise a fuss, though, the Raiders don’t seem inclined to offer a new deal until 2009 at the earliest.
“(Burgess is) a Pro Bowl player that has played great here in the past, battled through injuries last year to get back on the field,” Kiffin said, pointing to the two years remaining on his contract. “It’s one of those situations.”

Theres only 1 football whos going to get it? RB’s will tell you that they need to stay in the game to get warm LK needs to keep these guys fed somehow. A nice problem to have..
Lets face it with this running game we dont need Rice/Brown as WR’s so Walker/Carter/Curry/Miller is going
to be more than sufficient, potent as a matter of fact if JR dont hurt us with INT’s and just manage the game and RR doesn’t F up the defense its going to be exciting!
Cant wait for NE to come to town!

Raiders expect a return to form by receiver Walker
By Steve Corkran
Staff writer
Article Created: 06/04/2008 09:22:12 PM PDT
ALAMEDA — Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker either is a bona fide playmaker or a player on the verge of seeing his career end because of a bum right knee, depending upon whom you speak with.
In this case, the Raiders prefer to err on the side of their own medical evaluations and firsthand viewings of Walker, thank you, rather than speculation by Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.
The early returns are glowing for Walker in his first season with the Raiders, only a few months after the Broncos jettisoned him earlier this year after two seasons.
“Javon is so explosive,” Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. “We think that he’s going to be the best he’s been in years, as far as health-wise. I know he’s excited about this upcoming season and (the opportunity) to prove a lot of people wrong.”
Walker is working with the Raiders starting offense these days, opposite Drew Carter. A little more than three months ago, he was unemployed and saddled with the label as an injury-prone player who was past his prime.
It didn’t help matters that Shanahan said of his former lead receiver that Walker’s right knee likely would require microfracture surgery within the next two to four years.
The Raiders threw caution to the wind, not to mention a boatload of money Walker’s way. He signed a six-year contract four days later that guarantees him $12 million this season and $16 million overall.
The hope in Raidersland is that they happened across a player on the verge of regaining the form that led to his catching 89 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Green Bay Packers in 2004 and not the one who had only 26 receptions for 287 yards and no touchdowns last season.
For the record, Walker has had three surgeries on his right knee. The last of those came early last season as a result of an injury he sustained during an exhibition game.
Before the surgery, Walker, 29, was one of the league’s most productive receivers. He posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games and had 17 receptions in Denver’s first two games.
Walker said his injury had nothing to do with his startling drop in production.
“I just wasn’t used the way that I thought I was supposed to be used “… ,” Walker said. “My ability is still the same.”
Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt played against Walker each of the past two seasons. The Walker he sees during offseason workouts looks every bit as dangerous as the Walker who once made life difficult on Raiders defensive backs, he said.
“He looks fine to me,” Routt said. “He still has that good foot quickness. He’s real fast off the line of scrimmage from what I’ve seen so far. Who knows? Maybe his knee isn’t 100 percent. Who really cares? The only thing that matters is when September comes. From the looks of things, he’s going to be fine.”
Kiffin said Walker’s weight is a bit on the high side but that owes to it being the offseason and Walker still working his way back into shape.
“We think he’s in a good place right now,” Kiffin said. “He’s going to continue to get faster as his weight goes down.”
When that happens, Walker said, look out.
“It’s going to be a deadly combination between all of us as wideouts when we get on the same page,” Walker said.
Notes: Kiffin didn’t offer an update on running back LaMont Jordan’s status. Kiffin informed Jordan on Tuesday that the Raiders’ plans for 2008 don’t include Jordan. The Raiders earlier granted permission to Jordan’s agent, Alvin Keels, to seek a trade. “… The agent for unsigned first-round draft pick Darren McFadden, Ian Greengross, met with Raiders officials Wednesday

K-Rock as soon as Namdi’s deal gets done, the Raiders will gain about 5 million in cap space: he is counting for about 11 million dollars in cap space right now if no deal gets worked and he plays under the tag. Stuart was set to be paid 3 million this year. Lamont was supposed to get 4.7 million. The Raiders have been paying a lot of mediocre people good money for some time. They got the money and cap space to work out deals for everyone.
June 6th, 2008 at 3:45 am
The raiders have signed all their no. 1 before camp until last year. The deal last year was not about the money it was how the money was to be paid out. Russell’s camp did not want any signing bonues money they wanted all option bonus money that could not get recouped in case of a Micheal Vick type of mistake. Al would rather not pay the kid then set himself up for a fall like that. Finally both sides worked out a deal that both were happy with. russell’s deal is really unique. He did not get a signing bonus, nor did he get a big option bonus in the offseason. I think he gets a good size option bonus next season and he just gets like 4 million this year for salary.
DMAC like every other player in the NFL wa probably really happy to get a fat signing bonus with his new deal. This is what Al is used to and prefers.

$26m guaranteed isn’t a stupid deal, especially after the Falcons went mad over Matt Ryan. It also allows us to move into camp with McFadden safely signed.
I have been impressed with McFadden’s maturity. He said he wanted a quick deal and his agent has quickly and quietly done the business. It proves that McFadden isn’t stupid, isn’t ridiculously greedy, thinks about the impact on the team and his team, and that he employs a very responsible agent.
June 6th, 2008 at 5:50 am
A few other observations on the last few days.
The Oline is still very much work in progress. Harris looks okay and will certainly improve with familiarity and practice. Gallery and Carlisle are fixtures. I like Chris Morris but expected John Wade to make a stronger impact. RT is a problem, Green is adequate but isn’t really nothing more than a back-up. Kiff’s comments about Henderson are a real wake-up call – toughen up or ship out. Given the apparant lack of confidence in McQuistan, I suspect we might go looking for another RT very soon. Unless they try Wilson at RT?
The Dline looks much better. Warren seems fired up – and there was never any doubt about his ability. Josh Shaw realises this is his last chance and is giving it a real go. Richardson continues to improve and is quietly becoming a very important guy for us. Burgess seems fit and motivated. Add Kelly and we have the basis for some optimism.
The WRs are progressing reasonably well. Carter looks a steal. Walker isn’t there yet but is probably ahead of schedule. Higgins seems to have passed the first part of his audition. Of the others, Watkins seems the closest to a roster spot – good routes and he catches everything. Shields will be worried by his injury. Curry must be very worried.
Unless we only go with two TEs. Has Madsen disappeared? Has Reese made a case?
I am slightly concerned about the cover behind Asomugha and Hall. Routt is still inconsistent. Johnson is average and Bowie still plays like a trackstar. We need some experienced depth.
And lets hope Mr Pain is okay.

Glad we signed Mcfadden early. As I proudly recall me saying before the draft:
“With the 4th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas.”
Go Raiders!!!

Someone is still talking about the Lakers? The team that wins game one of a series wins the series 83% of the time. The Lakers are soft. They got killed on the boards. This will continue.

June 6th, 2008 at 7:21 am
Well, the dysfunctional Raiders are presenting a respectable immitation of a “model” NFL franchise by addressing the predominance of their “weaknesses” and wrapping up all their key players well in advance of late July’s training camp deadline. No PR nightmare this time around.
Now all that is left is to sign Nnamdi Asmougha.
However such moveshaven’t appeared to appease the “talking head” sect.
Instead of 1) acknowledging the significance of the acquisition “ProFootball Talk.com felt compelled to bury this “Caesarian” move en lieu of providing praise.
2) A move of significance was uncermoniously “buried” by PFT, the fourth rated story (The Big Show trumpheting his displeasure with the Seahawks young WR’s was the “headline article.” Subjectivity in it’s truest form) on their usually (unless the Raiders are involved)objective web site.
Seems they are peeved that the Raiders felt compelled to “scoop” the “Mediots” by transmitting the announcement to their fan ticket base web site first. Seems they have a complaint against promoting their good fortune to their potential season ticket base.
Thus PFT, whom I generally consider a fine, informative & humorous NFL resource will retain their anger regarding the Raiders “clandestine” approach to the media (which, I assume, they consider themselves amongst. A pox on them).
On a happier note I celebrated the signing of DMac by purchasing a matching (home & away) set of McFadden jerseys on EBay. Authentic @ that. Merely $138.00, dealer prep, options & shipping included. Check it out yourself. Save a few bucks & be the first kid on your block to resplendently display your Raider fandom.

408–It’ll still be Lakers in 5. P.P. is so full of sh*t with that faking crap. Asomugha has no choice since he has the franchise tag. He will be ready to go when training camp opens next month. Yes fBball. Both Laker and Celtics teams of the 80’s would sweep both of these.
June 6th, 2008 at 7:34 am
The Fakers are SOFT.
I can’t wait to see Kobe throw his team under the bus after they choke.
Go Celtics.

Running back Darren McFadden reached a six-year, $60 million agreement Thursday night with the Oakland Raiders that includes $26 million guaranteed.
[+] EnlargeAP Photo/Michael Conroy
Darren McFadden’s contract includes $26 million in guarantees.
McFadden is the third of the top four draft choices to reach a deal. Offensive lineman Jake Long, of the Miami Dolphins, and quarterback Matt Ryan, of the Falcons, the third pick in the draft, have signed. McFadden, the fourth pick, reached an agreement after negotiating during the Raiders’ minicamp.
McFadden’s agent, Ian Greengross, flew to Oakland to start negotiations with the Raiders. Both sides wanted to get a deal done quickly.
The tricky part was getting enough guaranteed money to compete with Long and Ryan’s deals. Ryan received more than $34 million in guarantees on his six-year, $72 million contract. But Ryan reached the agreement the day the NFL voided the final two years of the collective bargaining agreement. Negotiations for draft choices since have become more complicated because of the possibility of having an uncapped year in 2010.
Greengross and the Raiders were able to work through the red tape and come up with a six-year contract that maximized guarantees. Many analysts of the rules involving the uncapped year predicted more five-year contracts that included less overall and guaranteed money.
McFadden is expected to share the running back position with Justin Fargas. The team scheduled an 11 p.m. Friday news conference to announce the signing. He becomes the 21st of the 252 league draft choices to reach an agreement.

June 6th, 2008 at 7:59 am
This was a great deal considering the Matt Ryan debacle a pick a head of us and the uncapped year that made 6 year deals tough to deal with and the fact that Jake Long got a 5 year deal. We should have expected the guaranteed money to follow this formula:
Pick 1 – 32 million/6 years
Pick 2 – 30 million/6 years
Pick 3 – 28 million/6 years
Pick 4 – 26 million/6 years
Based on this, D Mac got what his slot deserved and I’m sure Al got the “Accountability and Forfeiture” clause in the contract that he insisted on with Russell last year. Also, we got value for the pick since McFadden was the consensus #1 or #2 on everyone’s draft board (except Mike “I will be choking on my words” Mayock).
I definetly support some type of Rookie Salary Cap system, but since the system is what it is, there isn’t much wiggle room. Thank God we drafted JR last year – if we still needed a franchise QB and paid 34mm to Matt Ryan I would have puked. That dud(e) is a third round pick at best in my book. I liked three QB’s over him (Flacco, Henne, Brohm) and thought they were LATE first rounders or second rounders at best.
Anyway, 26mm for DMac isn’t bad – he can’t bust completely, he’s got too much speed. If he just ends up being a change of pace/third down back and has a package of special plays at QB/WR, he’ll do enough damage to justify the pick right of the bat. Eventually, I expect him to put on some more weight and fill out (he’s only 20) so he can evolve into a franchise back when he develops more as an NFL RB. It took LT a couple of years to get good, which is what I expect for McFadden – he will need to learn patience while running, pick up the speed of the game at this level, and develop more tackle breaking ability to truly reach his potential. In the meantime, I expect him to thrive as a 3rd down back, in the passing game, and spot duty relieving Fargas/Bush. I think his package should be 10-15 touches a game, using screens, hitches, flares, outside runs, and draws to get him into space where he’s best, and then ease him into the standard plays as he adjusts.
But who knows? He may just dominate from day 1 in this system. I know he will when the holes are there (and we always popped at least 3-5 big ones each game that he could have taken to the house where Fargas got 15-25 yards) because his speed is just that good, but from the highlights I saw of him, he was excellent between the tackles and recognized holes immediatly so he seems to be the perfect fit for our scheme.
No matter what, his ability to run, catch, and throw (can’t wait until Kiffin call a tailback option pass against the Dolts – I’m SICK of LT doing that to us every time we play them) will force D’s to gameplan for him, keep them honest, which will open up a variety of other things in our offense. We are going to be fun to watch!
June 6th, 2008 at 8:02 am
to finish, Now that McFadden’s signed, watch the media go negative with Nnamdi Asmougha not being signed to a long term deal or even his offer sheet.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:05 am
LT did that to us because of a guy named Stu. Who’s someone else’s problem now, thankfully.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Nnamdi up next! PLease Al, throw the franchize tag in the garbage, and lock this guy up.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:15 am
About these comparisons of DMAC to Reggie Bush, I have to say that I relly don’t see the resemblance, other than the fact that they had the ability to score on any given touch, but they did it in different ways. Bush was a dancer, he would juke people out of their socks, where as DMAC would jut hit his hole and be gone. If someone gotin DMAC’s way he would either go heads up, or throw that mean stiff arm. I think McFadden will be a better pro than R Bush, because he wont shy away from contact the way Bush does.

I’m ready for the anti-Laker abuse. So it will be 6 games instead of 5. I’m a man. I can take it. My hummus, pita and hot wingss did’nt taste too good in the 4th quarter. Kinda lost my appetite.
Go Lakers.
Glad we signed Mcfadden early. As I proudly recall me saying before the draft:
“With the 4th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas.”
Go Raiders!!!”
Even though you were completely wrong about the Lakers, who got beat by the better team btw, you still find a way to pat yourself on the back. Typical Laker fan.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Listen DMC is a tremendous talent, the comparisons to AP and Marcus are inaccurate he’s more of a speed guy. If anything the comparison to Eric Dickerson have more merit. But Eric was even more physical and elusive than DMC.
Some will get pissed but that kid Felix Jones is more skilled as a runner. But DMC’s talent is unmistakable IMO he will be a headache to deal with and gameplan.

Good Morning Nation,
What a great way to start a Friday! Like many of you, I am celebrating this occasion by purchasing myself a #20 McFadden jersey this weekend. Hopefully this is the first domino to fall in a chain-reaction that should trigger the release of Lamont “Domino Fats” Jordan, the signing of Nhamdi long term, and the signing of all the other drafted rookies.

Killa,
I have not shut up. We still win the series. That phonie return of Paul P. was a real tear jerker.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:35 am
BART Bridge Balla,
Did you get yours at Raider Zone or online. What did it cost?
June 6th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Killa you gotta agree tho that stunt by P.P. was all done to pump up the crowd. I’m not worried about my cash right now cuz when the Lakers win Sunday it will be over just as I said. One thing tho I do agree with you is Kobe missed having a younger Shaq.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:36 am
I misread. Let me know where you find it this weekend.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:38 am
R4L -
That was very Walt Frazier of Paul Pierce last night. It’s not the reason the Lakers lost though.
Pau Gasol is no Shaq. Look for Kobe to go back to his old ways and try to do everything on his own.
The Lakers got beat by the better team last night. Period. No excuses are valid.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:41 am
hey Ex -
It would have been a tear jerker if it was Kobe though right? I’m beginning to like you bro but Laker fans in general need to get a grip. I just hope you are still around when the Lakers continue to lose. They are clearly overmatched.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:42 am
Killa they were the better team LAST NIGHT. Lakers are overall the better team and we will see that on Sunday. Lakers weren’t ready to play and that BS stunt did take away what little momentum they had going. Kobe will take over from here on and will Jordanesque.

Anybody hear any news about Madsen during this mini-camp? I wonder if he is gonna be the odd man out for the TE position with Wakefield, Stewart, Strong, and Reece all fighting for back-up roles behind Miller.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:23 am
BBB–Didn’t hear any news on Madsen at mini-camp, but he is a good, solid backup tight end and can be use as a wide out too. Unless he is hurt I think his spot is safe.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:28 am
I really liked Madsen last off-season, he has really good hands, catches everything thrown at him, but when the season started he never got any playing time. I know he is a big liability as a blocker, so Kiffin may not trust him as a back-up.
I wish Jerry would tell us who is playing on 1st, 2nd and 3rd team offense and defense.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:30 am
BBB…
yeah you’re right we almost forgot about Madsen… But do you think that when Bush and McFadden catches the ball so well that they would line-up in situations where a guy like Madsen normally would have been used??
I like Madsen, Madsen is a Danish Surname, so its great to a tiny touch of Denmark on our raiders, but if he’s cut it gives us a rosterspot to another guy
June 6th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Guys how come none of y’ll saying anything abt the offensive line. This is what our coach kiffen said abt that position.
Q: How are the offensive tackles holding up?
A: Not so great when it comes to pass protection.
New left tackle Kwame Harris is still learning the new blocking scheme, and at times it showed during 11-on-11 drills. Returning right tackle Cornell Green struggled to contain edge rusher Derrick Burgess.
As for second-year tackle Mario Henderson, he remains a work in progress who must become more physical, Kiffin said. Consider this an area of concern.

June 6th, 2008 at 9:35 am
we really need good pass blockers from either trading Jordan for them or getting them from free agency. I seriously think for the past 4 yrs our problems was clear, pass blocking and run stopping, if we could that I think we would have been in the playoff.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:44 am
LMN,
It seems like all of us fans liked what we saw from Madsen last off-season, but there are a lot of factors that don’t seem to bode well for him.
1. Our pass-blocking is gonna be a problem this season, so blocking TE’s will be favored over pass-catching TE’s (Madsen only ways like 230 lbs)
2. This will be Madsen’s 3rd season and he has not produced at all during the regular season; there are several dynamic rookie offensive threats like Rankin, Reece, Shields, and Schilens that will be pushing for that roster spot.
3. We have a lot more 3rd down/red zone pass catching threats than we did last season (Bush, McFadden).
Maybe Jerry will give us a mini-camp overview today after the McFadden press-conference, to let us know how some of these fringe players are faring.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Hmmm, is someone new working in the office or did Al chew a monkey gland? Good work. McFadden reminds me of another #20 from long ago, Billy Sims, a slasher who could get downfield under passes. Sims took the Lions fro 2-14 to 9-7 in one year. Wish for even better luck and a long career from McFadden. Welcome aboard!

The Celtics are much tougher than the Lakers.

idk if anyone posted the details of the contract yet, if so i am going to post them again. 6 yrs $60 mil $26 guaranteed.
June 6th, 2008 at 10:08 am
10 off-season questions that I would love for Jerry to shed some light on.
1. Will Chris Morris take over the long-snapping duties from Jon Condo?
2. Can Trevor Scott take over the wedge-buster duties from Ekejiuba?
3. Can Branch take over the gunner duties from Jarrod Cooper?
4. How many WR’s will we carry, and who will they be?(Carter, Walker, Curry, Watkins, JLH and Schilens is my initial guess)
5. If Harris fails as a LT, the back-up is Seth Wand, a journeyman tackle from the Texans zone system, how competent is he to protect JR?
6. Is Hartwell gonna play at MLB or SOLB, if at all?
7. Who is gonna back-up Howard on the weak-side?
8. Who is gonna back-up Huff at free-safety?
9. Who will be the dime and quarter cornerbacks after Stanford Routt? (Bowie, Waddell, Brown, Johnson)
10. Who will stop the run?? (cue CCR music) Sands is playing with the 2nd team, Warren is streaky at best, Joseph/Shaw/Kelly are three-technique guys.
June 6th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Yeah, thanks for that LMN. No worries, I am just kidding around. I will get over it…I still think the Lakers win the series. Kobe took awful shots and Lamar did his disappearing act and Paul P. did his Willis Reed impression and the Lakers still almost won. Now, if we lose game two, the pressure is on to win all three in LA…tough proposition.

Its now official that the Raiders put an unsuccessful waiver claim in for Bruce Gradkowski. He’s gone to the Rams – poor soul.
At least that proves that Kiff and Knapp recognise that AW and Tui are not the best options behind JR. With Gradkowski gone and the Raiders seemingly not interested in Culpepper or Leftwich, who else is there?
Its not a great list: Dilfer, Tim Hasselbeck, Holcomb, Martin, Nall, Weinke?
I guess we need to either trade or gamble that someone decent gets cut soon.

June 6th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Does anybody know if Wayne Gandy has recovered from his ACL injury?
Given the struggles of Green and Henderson in minicamp, we could do with a fit Gandy. Especially as he knows the Knapp/Cable system already.
Anthony Clements (ex Jets) Nat Dorsey (Browns) and Tutan Reyes (Jags) are probably the other reasonable OTs available.

Thee most scariest thing I read was Jay Richardson blowing past Kwame Harris to get to Russell -
June 6th, 2008 at 10:54 am
At least Kwame Harris is young, smart and has a great line coach to work with him. Barry Sims was old, dumb and an absolute false starting machine. Let’s give Kwame Harris and Mario Henderson some time before we panic.
June 6th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Russell looking comfortable in tne offense is great to hear – Kelly looking stronger than ever is good – Drew Carter and the Russell connection gota love that – McFadden taking reps off of the Jug machine is kinda scary – Hall stepping up – Also I was there live to witness Thomas Howard run stride for stride for 30 yards to break up a pass to D-Mac – Also can’t wait to see Michael Bush in pads laying out some hits – As well as Gibril Wilson – last but not least the Redskins signed Swigy (That must have been a typo) can someone confirm this for me??
June 6th, 2008 at 10:56 am
I think the def line has the advantage not being in pads because of their quickness but I dont know. Wait till pre-season to see what we have. Seems like Burgess beat everybody in front of him from the reports.
June 6th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Lil Stui did sign a four year deal with the Foreskins. However, my bet is he doesn’t make the 53 man squad.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Burgess is rejuvinated and will have a 12+ sack season. I believe his is on the last year of his contract so look for him to blow up many right tackles.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Thanks 408 thats what i want but damn its hot down here Fl. Oh well I’ll take the hit thanks for clearing my head.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:07 am
2 more years I believe – that would be so big for us 12+ sacks – Im wondering about that report that came out that said that Burgess wasn’t happy and he wanted more $$$$ – I don’t think he would be at the mini camp if that was the case – If the report is true and he is still at mini camp going hard than much props to Burgess

Raider4life, Jared Lorenzen would be an awesome backup for Russell.
Make it so!
June 6th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Kirk–Yeah I liked him at Kentucky and played decent for Eli when he got hurt. He is almost the same size as JaMarcus and can actually move a little better, but not quite as strong an arm. He is the #3 guy in NYC now along with Anthony Wright. Why the Giants signed David Carr is bizarre.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:37 am
I’m from the south. Being from the south does not mean you get a free pass on grasping the english language.

June 6th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Raider4life, I saw Lorenzen RUN OVER A LINEBACKER in the open field when the Giants played the Patriots in preseason. The Patriots released that linebacker the next day.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Kirk–Yeah I saw it too, but Giants may not release him until after preseason or at all. I would have preferred him over AW, Tui or Gratkowski. Hopefully they don’t do something stupid like sign old as* Trent Dilfer. Dude is Lil Stui’s Momma.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:49 am
So if I don’t excuse them I’m a bigot? Why do I have to excuse ignorance because they are black?
Who do you think you are?
I had two black MEN standing by me in my wedding. I have had presents under my family’s tree for black friends growing up.
Being black is not an excuse for ignorance. Giving them a break seems more against blacks than expecting better from them.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:55 am
obviously more is learned in one’s senior year in college than at any other time in one’s life…
you know ???
June 6th, 2008 at 11:55 am
K-Rock–So I take it you know both guys personally and know for a fact they are ignorant?? Nobody said you are a bigot by the way. They both have to have some intelligence to grasp an NFL playbook don’t you think? Just because someone speaks a certain way doesn’t make them ignorant. These are young guys with tons of pressure on them being exposed to a lot of people with microphones shoved in their faces. Get off your high horse K-Rock. At least give them the benifit of the doubt since they are on our team. Damn.
June 6th, 2008 at 11:59 am
don’t most Div 1 schools have a course entitled: Sportspeak 301 ???
(one must have a reasonable cahnce at professional career in sports in order to qualify to take the course… except bowlers…)
i believe the course deals with cliches… very heavy on cliches… and the course devotes a fair amount of time regarding the timing in using the phrase “ya know”…
June 6th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
K-ROCK,
OJ Seemed like a well-spoken, intelligent man and we know what was hiding behind THAT veneer…
Being a poor public speaker does not connote a lack of intelligence or imply ignorance. Ignorance is exhibited by one’s behavior, and as Raiders neither J-RUSS or DMC have done or said anything to justify such a moniker.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
BO
OJ IS a well-spoken, intelligent man. He’s just also a murderer. The two are not mutually exclusive.
And, poor public speaking DOES connote a lack of intelligence, but it does not DENOTE a lack of intelligence.
But I agree with you one-hundred percent that neither J-Russ nor DMAC deserve such monikers. It’s just simple prejudice, and not even necessarily racial.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Just posted at raiders.com:
Vince Evans has been brought in to increase the competition for the 3rd QB spot.
The black Blanda!
June 6th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Just kidding, although I am a Vince Evans fan…
He woulda been ideal in his prime.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
This very very good news. In getting the D Mac deal done. Now Big AL, needs to get Aso hooked up.
Good times are ahead for the NATION!!
Just
Win
Baby!!!!
June 6th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Kevn,
I disagree that poor public speaking is in any way related to limited intelligence. It is almost entirely a reflection of experience and training.
When Bill Walton was at UCLA people thought he was a rockhead because he stuttered so badly and shunned reporters. Lo and behold, he got therapy and people got to see the brain behind the mountain man exterior (not that I am a Walton fan…he is not dumb but quite the bozo).

Video of press conference up on nfl network
June 6th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Some of the greatest athletes of their time couldn’t give coherent answers in interviews, but they were extremely smart. Being football-smart is what an NFL team needs, not being Ivy League-smart. (Kwame Harris is plenty book-smart, and he surely hasn’t taken the league by storm. Yet?)
Bo Jackson? Certainly no dummy, but couldn’t get words out. Bo rocked the NFL.
The great #37 Lester Hayes? Nick-named The Judge, even though his proclamations were stuttered.
The great Lester Hayes stuttered his way to the best season any CB has ever had — with 13 regular-season INT’s and 5 more in the playoffs — leading his team to the Super Bowl title.
Want to see how intelligent McFadden is, just read his own blog entries. He’s smart enough, and charismatic enough for me…as long as he plays smart on the field.
JaMarcus not smart? He might not do well on an IQ test, but that doesn’t mean much…football intelligence, and the ability to compute tons of information in rapid-fire sequence is what’s required of a QB. JaMarcus has that, he just lacks experience at this level.
Listen to Ben Roethlisberger speak…Steve McNair…that hick Terry Bradshaw…and on and on…
Football-smarts is all that matters. McFadden and Russell have plenty of that, or neither would be here.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Hayes,
I wholeheartedly c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-concur!
June 6th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

June 6th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
That was my point. I am glad they play football.

June 6th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
VY wins football games, but scored a 12 on his woderlic test.
Say what you want and excuse them if you want.
I am glad both are Raiders. I hope they both make the HOF and win many games.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I think JR is smart, I dont see why anyone would think he is not?
June 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Its probably alot of nerves for those guys K-Rock. Not everyone was born to answer questions in front of a bunch of reporters and cameras.Imagine having to answer questions to the whole world after every project finished at your job. I know i would be tripping over my words a bit.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
K-Rock, who do you consider to be the gold standard for well-spoken, inteligent NFL players?
June 6th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Actually VY I think scored a 9, but Ryan Leaf, Art Schliester and our boy Girllery all scored well on the wonderlic. To say JaMarcus and DMar are ignorant is itself an ignorant statement. To me they are just nice, polite kids who will be great players for a long time. Hopefully for 10+ in Silver and Black.

June 6th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Raider4life, Lester Hayes is in the Elmer’s Hall of Fame.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
R4L — All respect, but the great Lester Hayes hates the moniker “the molester.” Lester worked very hard to establish himself as The Judge; if you came into his area, he’d be the decider-person as to your fate. Being called “the molester” just lacks a certain quality. The Judge is a much more comfortable handle, one which also belies his football savvy.
Thanks for the kind words though, RFL — I’m sure Lester loves reading posts like these!

Bo Schembechler Jackson -
How about them Lakers. Man they looked good last night. You were so right.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
#37–Wasn’t aware that Lester to offense to the nickname. I only remember him as the “molester” cuz of being an absolute shutdown corner. One of the greatest man-to-man corners in history, but doesn’t get his do cuz of the stickem. I remember him having a lot of speech problems early, but overcame it with help. Still one of my all time favs.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
what did JR score in the woderlic test? anyone knows??
June 6th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
wonderlic?
June 6th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Come on Killa. Wait until after Sunday to start beatin ur chest plz. If the Beantown boyz win Sunday night I will personally post props to you and the Celtics. However, if the Lakers win you know you, P.P. and his wheelchair are all in trouble.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Was Bill Callahan referring to Wonderlic scores when he said “we must be the dumbest team in football?”
June 6th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Lester got the “molester” moniker because he had no problem mugging receivers at the line…
and at this time in football it was legal to continue mugging a receiver going downfield… he was good at that too…
rules have changed…
June 6th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I don’t give a rat as* what JaMarcus or DMac scored on any test. All I care is they stay healthy and play great football. Screw Mr. Wonderlic and his test.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
R4L — All good, man — glad to help educate in what little way I can. Check out Lester’s bio on wikipedia…it’s pretty cool.

so what is Callahan doing these days???
On January 18th, 2008, following his firing from the Cornhuskers, Callahan was hired as Assistant Head Coach of the New York Jets.
job description:
assist with the construction of sandwiches for post game meals…
dispense and retrieve towels…
inspect personnel for infestations…

Wonderlic scores are supposed to be confidential. The league won’t confirm scores that get “leaked” to the public, but the stories still get out sometimes. If JaMarcus had a lower-than-average score, I’m sure the anti-Raiders contingent would find a way to get that news out.

June 6th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
408–Warriors will never get to the next level with Nelson. He refuses to play defense and refuses to get a true big man. Andreas Bidreas(sp) spends more time at the tanning salon then lifting weights or shootin foul shots. In two years when Keith Smart is HC and they play defense they could challange the Lakers.
June 6th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Outta here for awhile.
Go Raiders!
June 6th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
The level of talent on this offensive roster has compounded exponentially. The competition from DMC will only push Fargas and Bush further. Be prepared to see some monsters in the backfield! JR is going to have some potent weapons back there – a secure blanket if you will. This offense is limited only to Kiffin’s imagination.
There still remains some weak points or questions that I have about the O; specifically, the O-line. Serious competition really needs to heat up here. A talent infusion is required across the board imho – backups too. They are trying but I’m not too certain if its enough. Only time will tell.
TE is looking great. FB is looking great. (multi-talented persons man these positions). WR is on the up and up. There is a diverisity of muli-talented players on the roster. Soon this team will have one the most potent offenses in the league – maybe even rival the Colts if not surpass them. Already I can see them rivaling the Chargers (RB match but our corp is better, FBs ours better, TE theirs better, WRs match, QB ours more talented, OLine theirs better). Quite a move up for the Raiders all things considered. Two short years ago we were behind in every category except maybe WR now they only edge us by maybe 2/6 categories.

Regarding the Wonderlic topic:
The REAL question is what Lane Kiffin scored on the test when he came out of Fresno State…
Or what his SATs were when he was finishing high school in Minn.
Hmmmm…..
June 6th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
OMG I just read that Kiffin has a daughter named LANDRY!! What kind of Cowboys suckazz BS is THAT?!
He better name his next girl Amy (for Trask) or Otto if its a boy, or Al will have to can him for cause.

K-Rock, post #161:
What an off-the-wall-statement to make about Russells and MaFaddens press conference. Instead of showing some love for Raider Nation and the signing of our “first-round” pick, you vent you negative venom. I also detect some racial feelings there???
In the press conference, this morning, I saw a humble 20 year old kid, dealing with a lot of pressure, not knowing what kind of questions could be throw at him from the media jerks. Maybe we watched different press conferences. I saw a young man who wants to get into training camp, who wants to learn and be productive for the Raiders. I saw a young man who wants to make the Raider Nation proud of him. And, I saw a young man who wants to take care of his family. Good for him.
Good for Raider Nation…we have an awesome, young running back who wants to contribute big time for our team. GO RAIDERS …And thank you Al for the quick signing of Darren.
