Web exclusive: Short passing game OK for Russell

Some Raiders fans may not want to hear this, but Jerry McDonald says the short- to medium-range passing game suits JaMarcus Russell just fine. You can also find Jerry’s web exclusive column on our sports page.

Edward I don’t think you can say that at all. We don’t know what the Raiders are planning offensively with Russell other than the fact that he is being groomed to take the check downs if things are not there. Guys like Jam are going to try to make plays downfield and rifle a ball in between 6 defenders. That may work in college but that is NOT going to work in the NFL. Balls will get tipped, picked, and returned that way. That is not going to work for Lane Kiffin I can guarantee you that.

Luke Petitgout was suspended for the first 4 games of the season.

I thought it would be a good idea to give him a shot before but when you couple injuries with a suspension, it´s probably not worth it.

    And Marcus Pollard?…come on.

Besides the fact that he´s 36, he can´t block and he won´t play special teams.

Stewart, is not flashy bu he´s a decent back-up who does what back-up TE´s usually do which is block and play special teams.

I´d rather keep 25 year old Madsen, whose game, like Pollard´s is limited to pass catching.

In fact, I would rather give a chance to rookie free agent Darrell Strong who has made a few plays in camp.

What strong armed QB’s cannot fit balls into small places in the NFL? Since when?

  • http://www.Raiders.com Oakglenn

Of course you have to learn the checkdowns first!!! It’s called reading a defense. If a play is not there, what do you do??? Dance???? Take a sack???? Play hopscotch????? Jesus you guys.

  • http://www.Raiders.com Oakglenn

KK, I am not disagreeing with you. Any team HAS to go down the field to stretch a defense. But those are ALWAYS low percentage plays. Kiffins offense is designed to get positive yardage on EVERY play.

  • buster

    Hello everyone
Hows things at my favorite Raider bashing forum that lets trolls run amuk.

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

So you checkdown in year #1, And learn to play with your Wide Receivers in year #2 ?

  • La Milicia Negra

    furthermore..

throw the deep ball, we know he can that, but he needs to learn how to administrate a game..thats what this season is about.. exactly the way Jay Cutler was eased in to the game.. in ’09 Russell will have more deep throws..

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

Downfield plays are low risk, so you should’nt try them, I see. Hummm.

I am NOT a QB teacher, Kiffin may be right in his early checkdown approach.

All I’m saying is that if you’re going to play the same offense as last year, expect the same results.

  • http://the-snake Random Drugtester

low-percentage is what he said….low-risk is what you said

    wise up

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

I have facts and logic on my side…you have nothing but a coach who’ll be fired in a couple months!

well thank god for that !!!

i always hated those offenses that were designed to NOT get yardage on evrey play…

    whew… i am relieved…

  • http://0 Bob Marley

If for some reason we would go after a veteran TE, which I don´t think we are gonna do, I would get Kyle Brady, he´s old but still blocks like a 6th OL out there and even started 9 games for the Pats last year.

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

    Low risk –No reward

    Things I learned yesterday
Jerry condones trolls and Raider bashing while deleting anything said about it that points to him.

    Thats all
    Dont bother responding

You guys need to stop whining about things you cannot control, like the owner, and start scouting the Broncos for positions of weakness to help the Raiders win the opener. There is no telling who may read this blog for information.

  • Florida Pete

i think playactificationing will be the rule this year…

    lots of passes to Miller…

use MacDaddy as a wide out…

it’s what we should have done with TBrown when Bo showed up…

    i’m just 2 centsing here…

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

    Sorry High Risk ;-)

So, on 3rd & 10, we should throw 5 yards, because it too risky to throw it behind the stick?

  • http://the-snake Random Drugtester

I love how you guys misquote, mis-read, misunderstand something someones says and then proceed to beat them up with it when all the while you are the only person is wrong.

  • McRaider

Do we even have the cap room to go after Bouldin? I doubt another team would accept him in a trade.

I would agree to trade Fargas and a 3rd for bouldin.

  • La Milicia Negra

    Bob Marley..

what are you saying, you think we should trade for him??

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

we should have Jamarcus hand off to McFadden and then throw him 10 yards for the first down…

    now that’s ball security !!!

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

I already threw away more information about the Broncos then the whole Raiders staff ever knew!

    Fargas and a 3rd wouldn’t get you Boldin’s shadow…

  • Andrews Mom

I would rather beef up both lines before giving up a 1st and a third for Boldin, although he would be worth it.

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

And you know already know this!

  • Sith Lord Davis

They will not trade Fargas, McFadden, or Bush, that for sure.

Now that is a clever question..

  • Andrews Mom

Or trade Hall for him since most people think Hall wont cut it.
    Doesnt AZ need a cornerback?

  • M

The “low risk” play calling sounds a lot like “playing NOT to lose”. A “prevent” offense so to speak which the lauded Gruden employed too often. We all get to see how Ryan’s “prevent” defense fares on a weekly basis.
Man, it ain’t metaphysics. Run the ball, tackle the ball carrier, block like hell and air it out occasionally. Have some swagger!

  • Raider4life

If Walker doesn’t show signs of the old Walker (GB) on Sat. nite Kiffin should put the screws to his head and force him to retire. Then we do whatever it takes to get Boldin in a trade from AZ. Not sure if I would give then Fargas, but would give them next years #1. If they get Walker to retire we should have cap room for Boldin.

  • La Milicia Negra

Fargas, Javon Walker and a 4th -> for Boldin

  • http://www.Raiders.com Oakglenn

Did some of you guys NOT watch the two preseason games????? A lot of that were things of beauty. They were setting themselves up for third and short. Especially with the ones. That, I thought, was incredibly positive. Now, on a lot of occasions they did not convert those third and short, but KK, they are setting themselves up for a 3rd and two, where they have converted a couple prior 3rd and shorts, the defense bunches up and they go over the top. If it’s not there, have a contingency plan. It’s a well designed offense.

  • Andrews Mom

Besides Walker is gonna earn his paycheck this year.

  • Sith Lord Davis

Post 327 talk to John about your lack of respect, you have a franchis that has reached 5 Superbowls, one as recent as 2002, and you want to whine about it? Get real. Now say a Browns fan may have reason to whine so much about the ownership yet they don’t even do it because they know it makes no difference.

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

Why are all of you so quick to want to cut players?

    You sound like Kiffin….

Kiffin needs to treat his players like they are a solid piece of marble….

He doesn’t need anymore items to the masterpiece, all he needs to do is chip away the rough parts and uncover the team thats already inside….

The problem is, Kiffin is no artist!

  • Florida Pete

nobody nobody nobody wants Javon “champagne” Walker…

    nobody…

not even you… and you know who you are…

  • Sith Lord Davis

Fargas is far to important in the locker room to trade him and he has a good contract for a backup and is happy to take a back seat.

  • Andrews Mom

How many games has Boldin missed because of injuries?

  • Brown81

I’m not a fan of throwing short on a 3rd and 10 play. I think you should always go beyond the sticks. However, I also believe that you should take what the defense gives you on 1st and 10. How many times did Shell have his QB drop 7 steps on 1st down and try to go deep, only to either lose yardage or wind up 2nd and 10? That is foolish play calling. Why not try to get to 2nd and 5? Then you have the whole playbook to work with, including taking a shot deep. Even if it falls incomplete, you only need to pick up 5 yards. It’s all about playing smart, not who can throw the ball down the field the farthest.

  • M

    Florida Pete,

    how’s the hurricane?

  • Jon Gruden’s wife!

Sith Lord, what is your point?

  • Andrews Mom

Kiffin just said two players were ready for the preseason.
    Fargas & Miller
Fargas is Kiffs meat & taters
He stays here and rightfully so.

  • http://none FIRE KIFFIN

Comparing Bill Parcells to Lane Kiffin is the funniest thing I’ve ever read in my life.
