10 reasons Raiders will beat Broncos

Here is why the Raiders will beat the Denver Broncos tonight at McAfee Coliseum:
1. They’re due. At some point, the Raiders will face a team which plays worse than they do in Week 1. Plus, you’ve got to figure an ex-Bronco or two (Javon Walker, Ashley Lelie, Gerard Warren, Cooper Carlisle) can give the Raiders an edge.
2. They’re better at quarterback. Yes, JaMarcus Russell will make mistakes. But don’t compare Russell to other No. 1 draft picks or quarterbacks on other teams. Compare him instead to Aaron Brooks, the 2006 Andrew Walter, Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper.
How do you like him now?
Take a look at how Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco did in their debuts Sunday. With the proper run support, there is no reason Russell can’t do something similar.
3. Justin Fargas is all shiny and new, having not yet subjected his body to the weekly demolition derby. He’s the most game-ready player on the offense according to Lane Kiffin and he is just waiting to drop 100-plus on the Broncos after gashing them for 146 last season in Oakland.
4. Mike Shanahan bristled during a conference call when I asked him about the Broncos getting away from being a running team because of Jay Cutler’s emergence as a passer.
“You may write about it more when we’re throwing the ball well but we’re still going to run the football and we’re running it well,” Shanahan said.
But the fact is they weren’t up to par last year, gaining under 2,000 yards (1,957) for the first time in since 2001 and finishing ninth in rushing, a year after finishing eighth. The biggest reason for Denver’s dominance over Oakland since 1995 is their running game _ and now the Raiders run it better.
5. Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall is suspended for the opening game. He is the most dangerous receiver on either team, the game-breaking target Cutler needs the most.
The starters will be Darrell Jackson, the drop-prone veteran who even the 49ers wouldn’ t have as their own, and Eddie Royal, a dangerous rookie. Nnamdi Asomugha, DeAngelo Hall and Stanford Routt should be able to keep the Denver receivers under control.
Note: Prevoiusly called Eddie Royal “Darrell.” Darrell Royal is the former coach at Texas.
6. The Raiders should have swept the Broncos last year. Only Shanahan’s time out prevented an Oakland win in Denver when Sebastian Janikowski boinked one off the upright.
This gets back to reason No. 2, but Josh McCown, playing with a bad ankle, had one of the worst days a quarterback could possibly have yet the Broncos were lucky to win. All McCown had to do was properly manage the rematch _ which he did _ and Denver wound up kneeling on the ball to end a 34-20 loss.
Out-coaching Shanahan head-to-head is probably the only reason Kiffin escaped the Bugel-Shell fate of one-and-done.
7. The Broncos don’t have the defensive personnel to dominate the Raiders offensive line. No Albert Haynesworth and not a Williams (Pat, Mike, Jamal) in sight. It’s true the Raiders tackles have some pass blocking issues, but in a true zone blocking system, the key linemen are the center and two guards _ and Robert Gallery, Jake Grove and Carlisle should take care of business.
8. Zach Miller should be open _ and Russell will find him. Denver strong safety Marquand Manuel is regarded as a hitter with problems in coverage _ perfect for a tight end who seems wise beyond his years in finding open areas and a quarterback in Russell who already sees him as a secruity blanket.
9. The Darren McFadden factor. He changes everything about a a formerly plodding offense _ including how teams will defend the Raiders. He will create mismatches _ even when it is someone else getting the ball.
10. Jason Elam is in Atlanta. Maybe the scariest Bronco over the years where the Raiders are concerned because it seemed he never missed dating back to the old Mile High Stadium and when the Raiders were at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
It’s not going to have that “automatic” feeling when Matt Prater lines up for the big kick.

This is the biggest game for the Raiders since the Super Bowl. Winning and getting on the right track for the rest of the year is cruicial. It’s only week 1, but it really is a must win game.

First, let me clarify for COW the type vet’s Big AL provided the Raiders with, highly talent vets with substantial playing years. 3 years is hardly substantial. COW, and please don’t confuse forced on player with a Kiffin request/desire. Fargas is a forced situation on Kiffin as he will force Fargas out of the backfield and off the team beginning this year. Newberry was a forced situation. Kiffin wanted no part of bring Newberry in nor Wade. I said back when Wade was picked up that Kiffin will either bench him or cut him. Wade will be cut next year. Kiffin doesn’t want Green on the team but Mario isn’t ready yet. Carlisle was a Cable desire, and Griffith was the OC desired player from ATL. Kiffin had benched Ronald Curry for Drew Carter. A. Lelie is sheer desperation and last but not least, is it not glaringly obvious that Kiffin does not like Javon Walker?

I hope that Kiffin can keep the young guys from being too emotional tonight. Russell, McFadden, Bush, and Watkins (To a certain extent) will all be crawling out of their skin.
Kiffin needs to keep these guys focused and keep them from making mistakes.
A well managed game from Kiffin and Russell combined with the guts to take a few shots downfield should translate into a Raiders’ win!

Vet’s in their twenties that have not been battled tested is not the type of veterans that Big AL would go after. For example, we needed a fullback to block for our many runningbacks, instead of only drafting a fullback like OO, Big AL would have picked-up an Lorenzo Neal to show OO how to play fullback in the NFL while securing the Raiders with a top notch fullback in the present.
The alternative, the kaos that is the fullback position currently. Griffith plays fullback yet doesn’t lead block very well and never has. Then why is he here? Because he can catch out of the backfield? Now OO goes down which leaves us with no blocking fullback. So now we are forced to sign a sub-par talent at fullback until OO returns. This weakens the running game and slows the passing attack. Image if we had a proven fullback like Lorenzo Neal blocking for D-Mac or Bush or even Fargas.
I could continue with more and more examples but its pointless right now. Once things take shape this season we’ll see if Kiffin’s belief in youth over experience, potential over proven track record is to be rewarded or run out of town.

The Fall of the Patriots is something that I am going to savor! I will enjoy watching them finish at 8-8 and not make the playoffs more than I would get off on sex with a swimsuit model.

You shouldn’t crown Matt Cassell over one decent game, as the next coming of Brady. He was a college backup for a season and you’re too quick to say that he’ll be better than Matt Leinert. But, over one good game, you can’t project Cassell to the better than Leinert and vault the Patriots to 11-5. They may

I hate the cheating coach Bill B, but he has put in place a well running machine that can survive, maybe not as well, but still very good without Brady or any other
player. The QB spot take a couple years to develop the understand of the game, the complex sets and defenses and
blitzing packages. Coupled with all that, a QB needs to understand his offensive capabilities and he must build trust among his players. You just don’t walk in and become the next hero. Doesn’t work like that.

Fargas’s days are so numbered in Oakland he’ll be lucky to see action in 8 games this year. Kiffin’s replacements for him are almost ready. Fargas is nothing more than insurance now.

Now because Grove gained some weight and lifted some weights he’s better than a guy who has been solid at the position for ten years? Yeah, okay we will see.
Now you can take this as nothing and blow it off but the proof is right there for the world to see. Just look at the roster. We have alot of youth, very little experience and an incredible amount of potential talent. Looking at the roster can you honestly say that this team is ready to win now? Potentially, yes. Not saying that this approach can’t work, but the successful Raider teams of the past were more seasoned and possessed more proven talent. Cow, you claim that Kiffin prefers performance over proven or potential talent, however when your team finishes with a record of 4-12, winning only two more games than the previous year there was not a whole lot of perfomance being displayed.
Again, when the proof is right there in front of your face that’s not a tripe from last year, that’s the truth.

Sparano: Development of Anderson, Moses ‘Critical’

Bill Parcells’ teams always feature a fierce pass rusher on the outside.
That’s why Thursday’s practice was so important. For the first time since Aug. 7, all eight outside linebackers were healthy and participating fully.
Joey Porter has been up and down with knee, ankle and back injuries. Vonnie Holliday and Charlie Anderson strained their hamstrings.
On top of that, this is a brand new 3-4 defense. Quentin Moses, Matt Roth and Holliday are learning the transition from pure defensive end to the hybrid end-linebacker position featured in a 3-4.
With so many guys learning the position, and so many guys going up and down with injuries, head coach Tony Sparano said “it’s pretty critical” that Moses and Anderson, listed as backups, develop into serviceable pass-rushers.
“That’s a position where right now you can never have enough of these outside linebackers,” Sparano said at his Thursday afternoon press conference. “Quentin has been the one guy who has been out there each day and has really taken advantage of that. Today was nice to have them all out there on the field, but it is critical and I think at some point they’re all going to have to help us.”
Anderson began training camp as the Dolphins’ starting weakside linebacker, with Porter on the strongside. But with Anderson missing almost two weeks of practice, Porter got switched to the weakside, Anderson got bumped down to the second team, and Matt Roth took over at strongside.
Anderson finally got back on the field today. He had done nothing more than ride an exercise bike since injuring his hamstring Aug. 9 against Tampa Bay.
“I was happy to get Charlie back out there,” Sparano said today. “He’s doing really well right now, did a nice job in his rehab. It’s still a day-to-day thing with him as we go out there, but today was a good day. We were able to get him some work, get him rushing the passer a little bit.”
Moses, entering his second NFL season, has the most to prove. He was the first pick of third round pick in 2007 out of Georgia, but didn’t even make the Raiders out of training camp. Arizona picked him up the next day, but discarded him in October. Finally, he landed with the Dolphins, and appeared in five games with 1.5 sacks last year.
He began training camp at Anderson’s backup at the weakside, but now is listed with the Third Team, and could be in danger of being cut next week.
Sparano said Thursday that Moses has played about 40 snaps in each of the two exhibition games, but Moses does not have a tackle or a sack yet.

Lombardi’s take, which is below is the reason why this guy was and never will be a good judge of football. As he often does, tell us the fans what to look for or how a team should operate. Lombardi has tried to be a slayer towards the Raiders to help his employment, yet no team has hired him yet, also to spite Davis he worked for Denver for no salary and it still wasn’t helpful.
Lombardi was hired by Davis in the Gruden era, at the time of the hiring he was unemployed and was a CBS football analyst on their pre game show.

Remember last year when the Raiders cut Quinten Moses, their third-round pick? (How does a team that wins two games cut a third-round pick?) Well, they might want to watch tape of him in the Kansas City game this preseason. He looks very impressive rushing the passer. Granted, it was against the Chiefs offensive line, but the Dolphins have to feel pretty good about that pick up. Like most Dolphin players, he plays hard and is very physical.

What does Lorenzo Neal being the back-up for the Ravens have to do with the Rain in Spain? L. Neal is a blocking fullback probably one of the best in the game and you tell me about some freakin Griffith? Griffith is not a blocking fullback and has never been considered on Neal’s level. And OO will be lucky to get back to player that he was before the knee injury which was not all that good to begin with (pun intended).

What I did say was that Vet’s that are in there 20’s have not been battle tested and that’s not the type of vet’s that Big AL would go after. For the record, for the 100th time, I don’t hate Kiffin, I just don’t have this strange, undeserving man-love for a guy that has done nothing to date but make excuses, blame everyone but himself, and only win 4 games, excuses aside (but pun intended). Going back to L. Neal, if you read my post I never said anything about signing him now. L. Neal was on waivers until August, I did not want us to wait until someone was hurt before signing Neal, I wanted him signed right away when he was first waived by the Dis-chargers.
Neal is better than any fullback we had or currently have on the roster, hurt or not. And to answer your question, at this late date there really aren’t any highly talented veterans left that could help the team so no there’s noone to pick-up now. That time has come and past. Look at the bum fullback we just signed to fill in for the injured OO. Once again, I was speaking of moves that we could’ve made that would’ve brought in more highly talented veterans and increased the talent level of the team.

Lofton is a proven winner. He’s built offenses from scratch all over the league and has succeeded at doing so. He single handedly designed San Diego’s offense, and drafted all of their players. So, he’s definitely more qualified than Lame Kiffin, who’s done NOTHING! Lofton = Super Bowl.

Adding the blitz-factor to an already scary defense is gonna be the perfect thing for our secondary and Linebackers to get more turnovers(not like our LB’s didnt preform last year,Howard 6 pics?? Morrison 4 pics???)Its been a while since we had so much talent. We are one of the youngest teams in the NFL, and the young talent we have on our defense is the best i think its ever been. No other way to start the season then pouncing on the donks like we did last year twice!(First game we should have won) All that matters is if Jamarcus can play a game with limited mistakes and play conservative. Our 0-Line will overpower there small defense.

I took my daily constitutional down El Cajon Blvd, a major artery through the center of San Diego. I have not see one single person wearing Charger clothing, this the day after the Charger loss. This is typical. The Charger fans are fair weather phonies, no doubt about it.
Dear friends I wish I could be with you at that jam packed Oakland Coliseum tonight to root for the Raiders. Several people from San Diego that I know are making the trip up there. Today I am wearing a shirt that says “Raiders Fan Club San Diego” with the actual unmodified Raider logo. I suspect JR will “manage” this game per Kiffs orders. I look for Fargas to get 25 carries, as long as he is tearing off chunks of burro hide five or seven yards at a time.

About 4 weeks ago I switch positions in my job and got transferred to a new department. I’ve been talking about this season with the other 2 guys in my office, one is a BEars fan, the other a Bills fan. So we’ve been going back and forth about the season and all that good stuff, right. Well, just now, I just found out that our Boss is a Broncos fan. And he never said anything about the season while we were having one of our conversations. He left a half hour ago, and on his way out, he said to me, “we are gonna kick your a$$ tonight.” I told him bring it punk! Now I’m in Careerbulider setting up my resume….lol no just kidding, I just thought it was funny that he never mentioned he was a Broncos fan when me desk is pretty much covered with Silver and Black stuff, from post-its to posters on the wall…

Dakota – First off…that video of Bo Jackson is amazing. The guy had so much power and speed combined that its understandable why we’ve been punished by the run for so many years. The fact that we have Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson made God say that all things should be equal and we’ve paid the price ever since. Do you think McFadden can be anything close to what he was? Does McFadden have that kind of power?
Also…That Tecmo Bowl video of Bo was hilarious. I never did that before but Barry Sanders used to be unstoppable in 1992’s game. I think I wore him out in the game though because at one point, he wasn’t as fast as he used to be it seemed.

by the way, i had a raider room in CT. I took down the garage door and put up a wall and door. black carpet, black ceiling and silver walls. behind the bar was the “black hole” all raider greats stenciled in silver (black hole is black wall). anyway, i once had my ex over my couch facing one of the TVs. It was halftime. The 2nd half started and Gannon started driving and I honestly backed out of what i was doing and went and sat down on the couch to watch the game! hahahahahha anymore questions as to why i’m divorced? No DVR at time.

Umm, ok so the raiders got a bad spot call with justin fargas run, and yes the reffs also did not call the pass interference at when the raiders were within the red zone, but we already know the reffs will give us no calls, and not see the calls when they are actually for us, (Its why mike Shanahan gets away with all the trick plays), but we already now we are not getting any calls from the reff. So, then What, we put in a QB who held out the first year, and OMG is it showing. Jamarcus Russell looks scared, nervouse, and if he is about to cry for his MOMMY. THAT HOLD OUT KID IS NOT READY!!! Yes he is physically talented and more than ready physically, BUT THERE IS NO PRO QB KNOWLEDGE IN HIS HEAD! That is he does not cognitively understand the game. SOLUTION: Please, Please, finally let Marqcus T play QB for a whole game!!! For once, as I recall we have always won with QB’s that seem too old or washed up. Oh, and one more thing, Lane Kiffin if you keep making Jamarcus pass for anything more than four yards, you should be fired.
