It’s Showtime for Sapp

Warren Sapp has taken his act to Showtime, the new residence for “Inside the NFL.”

That can’t be good news for the Raiders, as Sapp was unsparing in some of his criticism during a conference call to promote the show.

“As far as where the Raiders are going, they have unrealistic ideas about what their people can do,” Sapp said “That was the experience I had in the four years I was there. They asked people to do stuff they were physically impossible of doing. They asked a guy who hadn’t coached for 12 years (Tom Walsh) to coach. They’re going to suck.”

Sapp’s assessment of cornerback DeAngelo Hall, burned repeatedly in the 41-14 loss to Denver?

“DeAngelo Hall has been getting burnt since he was in Atlanta, so this isn’t nothing new,” Sapp said. “DeAngelo Hall is the flashiest burnt-up corner ever in the history of the game. I mean, he gets burnt more than anybody else, and he all of the sudden is this great Pro Bowl cover corner. I never saw that in DeAngelo Hall. He would gamble and do everything unsound on the corner.”

How about Tommy Kelly, whose skills Sapp praised during his time with the Raiders?

“He never played (tackle), he was at end. Then he had a knee injury, and I never had the chance to teach him the intricate parts of the three-technique,” Sapp said. “(He is) a 6-6, 330-pound country kid from Mississippi who is strong as all outdoors. Can he play the position? Yes. But there are certain things about (defensive tackle) … If you (stand) too high, he’s going to get knocked around, and at 6-6, low man wins in the trenches, and once you get knocked around, you get a little apprehensive.”

When I hear people like Mike Ditka talking The Raiders down, as much as I hate hearing it, I can’t disagree with it until they start proving on the field that it is undeserved.

Andrews Mom – cool – I agree mostly – Al is not a terrible GM – I’ve looked at past drafts and he’s average – minus the Janikowski selection Al’s done what most people expect him to do – he may overdraft here and there, but no worse than a lot of other teams. My issue isn’t with his drafting or free agent signings – he will always spend what he can to aquire talent – you’ll never find us 20 mil below the cap and there is no question he wants to win. My issue with Al is the fact that he gets too involved with the scheme – it used to be he actually called plays (I personally know this through former employees in L.A. and also Jerry and others have reported on this, so between the two I’m pretty confidant in that statement). Now Al just gets involved in the scheme – that Rob Ryan man scheme is Al’s doing, and Rob is playing Al to keep his job by defending players that shouldn’t be defended so they beg for him to come back after a bad year. I think old Rob is holding out for a HC position. Anyway, the entire planet knows we don’t blitz and just sit in man coverage all day so they might as well have our defensive playbook. Add to that we don’t have the personnel to stop the run or rush the passer on the D line, and it makes playing us very easy, especially for good teams. You can pick your person to blame, either Al for insisting that Ryan run that D or plain just not firing him when his Head Coach asked him to fire Ryan, or Ryan for running what other teams and commentators have called a vanilla scheme. Somebody has to be blamed, and it can’t be Kiffin b/c he wanted Ryan’s big b*tt booted. I absolutely understand the point of this scheme, and the personnel required to run it – we need three more players – NT and two DE’s that can hold the point of attack and rush the passer (think Howie Long and Greg Townsend) and this scheme might work, assuming Hall becomes the lock down corner opposite Nnamdi – speaking of which, if Ryan was going to either play him or let him play 10 yards off the line, we may as well of kept Washington and our 2nd rounder because the point to acquire him was to have him play press/bump and run. If he can’t do it, then we (meaning our scouting department and Al Davis) royally messed up (lost draft pick, wasted salary cap money for years). Anyway, Rob Ryan (the self-proclaimed “head coach of the defense) and/or Al must be held accountable for not adjusting the scheme to compensate for our lack of talent on the D line. I’m not concerned with the fact that we don’t have talent there because I understand that we have been rebuilding both sides of the ball and it takes years to do that and we’ve addressed a lot of other needs, but seriously, look around the league, there are a lot of teams with less talent that can play better d because they run a decent scheme (like the Tampa 2 I was hoping for) – we must play to our strengths (our pass D *WHEN WE CAN GET SOME PRESSURE!*) and scheme to mitigate our weaknesses – run D and lack of pressure from the front 4 in the pass game. During the offseason I was hoping we would convert to a 3-4, moving Burgess to OLB, Kelly to End, and Richardson to End. If we did that, and drafted or aquired a veteran NT, we would have a top 15 D. At this stage, I basically want to run a 4-6, blitz the hell out of the run and pass, and give our secondary the opportunity to play press coverage without having to cover guys for 4-7 seconds. We have an all-pro secondary and two good Cover LB’s, and between Brown, Morrison, and Howard, three quick (especially Brown and Howard – sub 4.4/5 guys) LB’s that can get up the field to the QB or into the backfield fast. This isn’t rocket science – what we are doing won’t work against good teams until we get “hall of famers across the board (as Jerry Porter famously said about Art Shell’s offense which coincidentally comes from the same era as Rob Ryan’s D).

On offense, there’s only so much Kiffin can do – 1st year QB and a bad pass blocking line – he must have the run game to set up the pass, and he is relying on his D, and rightfully so given the amount of time and money thrown that way on this scheme and what he has to work with, to keep his team in games so he can continue to run the ball and work off play action. Kiffin’s hands are tied, it was a miracle he was able to get 17 points a game last year as he was trying to work through who was good and who wasn’t.

Kiffin’s offense is shannahan’s offense, obviously it can put up points when the pieces are there and it gives us a great run game which will open up everything else. I expect 8-10 wins this year based on our offseason moves and our soft schedule, but we’re not going to get it with this D unless we get aggressive.

If they ever are going to play better I would think it would be this Sunday. They hopefully feel very embarrassed right now and should be itching for Sunday to get here to put this embarrassment behind them.

Problem is this franchise is not run like a “normal” NFL sports franchise. With clarity brings some tough decisions. Continue to go on and lose and accept it as “fans”. Or hold the team, and owners accoutable…

The owners of this team we love so much need to be held accountable to us the fans for the product they put on the field…

  • http://www.thenextraidercoach.com Jim Lofton

Koolaid,..they are not embarrassed, not at all,…they are only in it for the money,..they do not care about wins and losses,..just the money…is that hard for you to understand?…you think these Raiders care about winning?…they clearly do not. 0-16, keepin it real.

Collective doesn’t mean a certain number of a group, it means ALL of a group. This “collective” does not speak for me, nor most other fans — no matter how much it hurts to lose.

What the “collective” is doing is embarrassing themselves every time they reach out to journalists and the league office, trying to make their weakly-formulated “case” against the Oakland Raiders and Al Davis.

Why would a real fan of this team try to do such a thing? The losses aren’t embarrassing enough on their own?

Keep advertising your silly arguments to the outside world, and keep embarrassing yourselves — but don’t speak for ALL life-long diehard fans if you don’t have their support.

Another thing…..it’s not too difficult to see the ringleaders of the alleged collective would like to drive hits to some other website — is there another, more nefarious, reason for trying to rally the troops, besides the idiotic and impossible task of trying to wrest control of the franchise from its present owners? If this weren’t so stupid, it would be funny.

Here’s a hint to the so-called leaders of this non-movement: Before you embarrass yourselves even more, maybe you should use a little spell-check every once in awhile. Oh — and try to understand the words you’re using, and how they’re used in formulating proper sentences. An occasional spelling error isn’t a problem — but showing a lack of knowledge and maturity sure is.

After all, you’re allegedly supposed to be representing a better option for the team than what’s currently available. The people you’re contacting — if you really are doing such a self-humiliating thing — are sitting back and laughing at you. If any of this movement does grow legs, those other people won’t be laughing with you, they will be laughing at you even more. At least those people know how to speak and spell. Most of them do, anyway.

Real fans will stay with this team ’til the end. And do it proudly, win or lose.

No mutiny from this quarter. Not now, not ever.

Rob Ryan is getting the benefit of an inflated statistical performance in 2006. We all know what happened with the bed & breakfast offense. This defense was showing problems during the preseason. Remember that Tennessee breakdown at the end of the game. The scheme was jacked up and the QB drove down the field for the winning drive.

  • DirtyBathWater

jenna got a fat AZZ yeah thats what im talkin bout keep em comming philly

I’m sorry but Hall a burnout corner I don’t see that. I seen him get beat but I also seen give the beating. Nobody’s perfect. I liked Sapp in Tampa/Oakland but as an talk show host, he tries too hard to be funny and jokes that he thinks are “Hilarious” really aren’t. I do agree the Raiders expect more from the players they sign but they are usually a bust or on the verge of being a bust. Stop living in the Glory Days Of The Raiders AL and get some young talent for the future (Russell,McFadden) will be the future bust for Oakland if they don’t get o-line improved

  • PhillyRaider

    Hold up DBW,

We can’t disappoint the Nation bros who like meat upstairs either!

I was there standing next to the Violater and I can tell you one thing, it was ugly. That area of Oakland is awful and too many thugs are allowed in the game. This team is leaving Oakland in two years because the NFL will make it happen to save the franchise. Russell played well and Kiffin should have opened the playbook from the beginning instead of telling Shanarat he was going to play conservative then actually doing it. Ryan needs to go. One other note, Shanarat is kissing Jeff Fisher on the mouth for recommending Cutler. Davis got lucky getting Russell but not taking Cutler could haunt him for years to come. Russell and McFadden were the only bright spots in that game.

  • PhillyRaider

Sith, I agree. The thug sh!t needs to go. But I widh our D-line had 1/1,000,000 of that type of attitude!

    “Al’s will be done…”

  • PhillyRaider

    Sorry *wish*

    “Al’s will be done…”

  • S&B

Sith Lord–No regrets not getting Cutler. Cutler would be shellshocked like Walter was playing in an offense that defies logic. He also would have to deal with the same dysfunctions that Russell is trying to manage. Russell can be a good QB and his first two starts have really not been that bad. 65%+ completion ratings and a couple of TD passes. People around Russell have to make plays and run crisp routes. Hell, Russell would have looked good too if he got 6 and 7 seconds to throw

  • DirtyBathWater

yo filly that was the best one thanks

OK …enough with the other stuff. Lets talk about football here. I think this team “should” beat KC; but no more than the should have beaten Denver. I will not predict a victory b/c I don’t trust Rob Ryan. Simple as that! 2 run blitzes 1 pass blitz all game …in the face of Zero pressure on the QB all game? That just signifies incompetence. And the defense quit on him. The effort totally plummeted late in the 3rd Quarter. They were embarrassed and I don’t know if you can get the players back after that.

Offensively I expect JRussell to continue to show what he’s capable of. I expect DMC to really put it on KC (hopefully). Javon should have a nice day. Lelie should start opposite Javon until he proves he’s no more reliable than Curry. But I’m not so sure that will happen given Curry position is a bit tougher to learn. The passing attack should be more stable.

Herm will play Herm ball and try to run it all game. Or maybe he goes after Hall thinking he’s got his Huckleberry.

    PhillyRaider…

Thanx, for the flicks…You have a good eye for talent. Maybe you should come out, to the Island, and help the Old Man out..lol

  • Dakota

Hey, when the d-line always has to go 4 on 5 vs the opponent’s o-line, they are always going to get owned…throw in a LB blitzing once in a while and maybe our d-line looks a little better?

  • DirtyBathWater

    needs 2 do

  • Raiders Rain

Sith Lord Davis, there are thugs in the crowd, but it’s not the majority base of Raider fans, and what do you mean the Raiders will leave in 2 years because the NFL will make it happen to save the franchise? Save the franchise? The Raiders are raking in the cash cow with record ticket sales now that they’ve taken over their own business, now what do you mean by save?
