Davis-Kiffin-Cable highlights
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 at 8:38 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from the Raiders press conference with Al Davis outlining the reasons for firing Lane Kiffin and hiring Tom Cable, plus a few notes from Lane Kiffin’s counterpoint on ESPN:
– The Raiders case was detailed in a letter Davis said was sent by Federal Express on Sept. 12 and can be found at the above link or in the previous blog post.
– Kiffin won’t be holding a press conference as he told TV reporters earlier today. After Davis’ performance, Gary Uberstine, Kiffin’s agent and attorney, told his client to clam up.
The statement was as follows:
“Earlier today, Lane Kiffin told members of the Bay Area media that he intended to hold a press conference on Wednesday, October 1, to address his departure from the team. In light of today’s events, we have advised Lane to cancel all future interviews for the time being.’’
– But not before Kiffin went on ESPN and refuted much of what Davis had claimed, including the now infamous letter. Kiffin said that just because it was printed on paper and shown on an overhead projector, “doesn’t make it true.’’
– Is it just me, or does it finally seem to be sinking in that the image of Davis’ precious franchise has been seriously damaged over the last five years?
There was less bluster, not nearly as many references to the “Greatness of the Raiders.’’ Most rare was the admission of a mistake in the hiring of Kiffin.
“It hurts because I picked the guy,’’ Davis said. “I picked the wrong guy.’’
– Later, harkening back to the days when Davis was told there were sellouts at the Coliseum only to find out there weren’t, he said of Kiffin, “I think he conned me, like he conned all of you people.”
Kiffin said he watched the press conference with his wife, called it “hurtful” and said, “That’s something I wasn’t proud to be associated with. I was kind of embarrassed for him.”
– Davis was asked if he was responsible for not only the Kiffin hire, but the fact that the Raiders have gone through Bill Callahan, Norv Turner and Art Shell as well since 2003.
“I bear the responsibility. It takes a toll on me. It sure does,’’ Davis said.
– Kiffin, Davis said, would have been fired if he were 3-1 instead of 1-3.
“It was a cumulative thing. The pattern just disturbed me,’’ Kiffin said. “The first question he asked me when I said you would be fired or was relieved for cause was, `Are you going to pay me?’ First question. There are a lot of people who believe in this organization that he wanted to be fired but he wanted to be paid.’’
– Kiffin said his first question was about the status of his assistants, and was pleased to learn they were all keeping their jobs.
– Asked if Kiffin was daring the owner to fire him, Davis said, “That’s a good question. I don’t know what he was doing but he got me to fire him.’’
Responded Kiffin to ESPN: “There is no way I was trying to get fired.”
– There were a few instances of misdirection when asked about a specific problem. A query about the lack of continuity and number of coaching changes brought a reminder that the Raiders have been to the Super Bowl more recently than the Cowboys and are the last AFC West team to make it.
– If you’re keeping score on all the offseason “rumors” regarding the Kiffin vs. Davis, the Raiders owner confirmed that Kiffin wanted to bring in his father to be defensive coordinator, Kiffin didn’t want to draft JaMarcus Russell, Kiffin wanted to fire Rob Ryan, and that a resignation letter drafted on Kiffin’s behalf did indeed exist _ although Davis said it was at Kiffin’s request.
– Another one _ Davis said Kiffin wanted to leave for a job at Arkansas last year and was angry when told he had to wait until the end of the season. A high-profile friend at Arkansas (Jerry Jones?) tipped Davis off on that one, and Davis said Bobby Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons early specifically to beat Kiffin to the job.
– The inescapable conclusion is that stories regarding problems between Davis and Kiffin were not the creation of the media, but by Davis and Kiffin.
– Have there ever been two more stubborn men locked in a futile battle of wills, with both claiming the high ground when it’s clearly a matter of money?
It’s clear Davis despised Kiffin for some time, and the feeling was mutual. Yet they went some eight-plus counterproductive months before coming to Tuesday’s unforgettable theater.
– Cable was the most valuable assistant coach on the Raiders staff last year, and if he inspires the kind of loyalty in the entire team he does in his linemen, it can only help.
– Coaching at UCLA, Idaho and Colorado, Cable was also a hell of an offensive coach, his 11-35 record at Idaho aside.
“Everybody has a past, everybody has a journey in life, whether it’s professionally or personally,” Cable said. “For me, it’s been a great journey. Not always successes, by the record I have at Idaho. At the same time, not too many people move the ball like I did in college football, whether it was at Colorado, Idaho or UCLA. So I’m very confident that way, very confident.”
– Cable on Kiffin: “I respect Lane Kiffin, I love the guy. I think he worked his tail off. However, whatever that’s gone on here is between him and Mr. Davis, and I’ll leave it at that.”
– Davis said Ryan was too valuable as a defensive coordinator with the current team to consider elevating to head coach.
– It probably didn’t hurt Cable that he has a grasp of the tradition which has slowly evaporated over the past five years.
“I grew up a Raider. I grew up loving this team from the time I was a little boy,” Cable said.
I asked Cable about how the Raiders go about finishing games when so many players have known nothing but constant defeat.
“How you finish games? You don’t let up. You don’t let up,” Cable said. “You throw the football to score points in this game. You run the football to win it. And you’ve got to find a balance between those two. You’ve got to get your play-makers the ball in their hands, and you gotta be able to do that to finish. Defensively, you’ve got to be able to choke ‘em out.”
Post-press conference notes
A few notes collected from talking with Davis after the formal press conference broke up:
– The investors which purchased 20 percent of the team have no option to buy. A scenario to the one similar to when Chris Cohan purchased the Warriors could not happen, Davis said.
– The Raiders are working with the city of Oakland regarding a stadium _ “Of course we want a new one,” _ but Davis declined to “negotiate” in the media.
– Davis was sold on Russell as the No. 1 overall draft pick, in part because of a recommendation from ex-Raider Tee Martin, who went to the same Birmingham high school as Russell. Kiffin, Davis said, fluctuated between wanting Brady Quinn and Calvin Johnson, and also wanted to trade it for a time.
– It was Mike Lombardi who sold Bill Belichick on the idea of acquiring Randy Moss. It’s clear Davis still rues the day he made that deal, even if most people believe Moss had already mentally checked out of Oakland.
– Regarding Lombardi, who has been taking both subtle jabs and right crosses at the Raiders in his new gig as a columnist for the National Football Post, Davis said, “Mike Lombardi has been fired from every job he’s had. Every job. He can’t get a job. Last year he was fired from a job he was working for for nothing. He was fired from Denver. But he does have ability.”
– Davis said he is looking at a football executive he declined to name who will be needed to help guide the Raiders through issues such as labor, a new stadium
– Mark Davis has been around the facility more this season but Davis said his son has no plans to get in on the football end of things, although he will some day inherit the team.
“Business and stadium. He doesn’t want to get involved in football,” Davis said. “He just doesn’t want to get into that part of it. But he will own it some day. That is… if they let me go to my maker.”
– Davis said his health is fine “other than the quadriceps and a little trouble with the walking, based on total balance, I’m fine. I’m healthy. You’re going to have to have me around for a while.”
– Al still just loves Mike Shanahan.
“When Shanahan left me, he went to Denver. He was there for about four or five years as an assistant and they fired him for insubordination,” Davis said. “Dan Reeves and he had a big battle. He went to the 49ers and he learned their style of football and when Dan Reeves failed in Denver, the first guy they had was Wade Phillips, I think, then he brought Shanahan back. And Shanahan had success. But Shanahan has an asterisk next to those two Super Bowls, because they were caught cheating.”

how does cable get paid?
September 30th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Cable…get your $$$ up front.
September 30th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
nvm.. Davis said no alterations had been made to Cable’s contract, which expires after the season. from another article
September 30th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I got Kell’s money
September 30th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
I think Cable gets paid by check from AD Football, Inc.
September 30th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Kiffin was wisely told to shut his fat gob. That was the best advice anyone has given him recently.
September 30th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
you know, if the raiders were winning al’s way, i’d love the guy.

Bummer about no Kiffin Presser…would have been fun.
Night all.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
At lease we have something to be happy about.
Jacksonville wide receiver Jerry Porter: The Jaguars are hoping the hamstring surgery Porter underwent during the preseason proves successful. Otherwise, the franchise may have squandered a small fortune (six years, $30.4 million with $10 million guaranteed). Signed to improve Jacksonville’s anemic deep passing game, Porter had one catch for six yards last Sunday in his Jaguars debut. Jacksonville needs Porter to play a larger role as he gets healthier.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Hey Dakota….You gots a Cubbies Blog….I want to go on and talk some shyt!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
of course, Kiffin has to cancel his interview. How the hell is he going to explain the diff between him and Al when Al checkmated him on every subject. Good Riddance.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
LMFAO. Now that is classic. Kiffys attorney told him to STFU. Maybe, just maybe, the things Al said are correct?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Tom Cable is a man, a football man, an excellent O-line coach and a Raider fan. Why do people assume that he is another Bugel, Shell2, or Kid Kiffie; a failure before he begins? You people watch too much Fox Noise, willing to put everyone in a box before anything has occurred. (Like declaring someone a “bust” after four games or ten games or a season. JLH is everyone’s hero now right? And Gallery is the new Wiz right? The DISinformation age is much higher on the DIS than on knowledge, patience and understanding what exactly is.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Hi Y`all. Lets go Raiders!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

The mentality comes with loosing. Every one is a pessamist until the team wins. Human nature!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
*losing
September 30th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Classic line…
“But Shanahan has an asterisk next to those two Super Bowls, because they were caught cheating.”
LOL!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Cable can’t lose. If he does well, he is the man here. If things dont work out, he will go back to his position and work for Mooch. One thing for sure is he took bust Gallery and made him probowl material. Can’t wait to have Mooch on board. Can’t believe the whiners fired him for making the playoffs. Boy they are doing so well now aren’t they?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Lance is like a little kid/daddys boy that got a job and then couldnt do it…Gruden needs a waterboy so at least Lance has a possibility there.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Kiffin never expected Al to come out swingin.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Chaos,
I understand your point. it is indeed human nature. Doesn’t mean it is in the least bit correct/good to be so.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Yeah I hear you…….Hard to change that culture though….
September 30th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Gallery is pro bowl material?…did I read that right?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Kiffin is a classic Generation X Brat. He thinks he can get what he wants and doesnt think how it affects things.
For example, how stupid can you be to try and interview for the Arkansas job when you know Jerry Jone is on their board. Of course, Jerry will tip Al to it.
That alone in itself should show you how much of a dumba$$ he was.
Jerry Mac…are you goign to admit you were conned or not?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
K-Rock,
the Kid hung himself and Al just let him swing for all to see.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
kiffen… WHO?
oh you mean that deer in the headlights.
at my son 13-14 year old football practice tonight the head coach worked the entire team for 45 min. straight up downs sprints non stop with out water. one kid collapsed of heat exaustion and was taken to the hospital. the coach fiqured the team needed a wake up call for loosing last saturday. what do you guys think about this?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Hey Lance is gone, now chickened out of his presser manana,..typical…Im movin on as the Raiders are,…time to shock the world,…make the playoffs with amazing run…now that Kiffins out, Im in.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Wow, no press conference after all…that’s good they told him to be quiet.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
You could tell all of this has really hurt Al.
He even admits he is ready to bring in another Executive of Football Operations.
FINALLY!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Stabler, when was the last time Gallery had a penalty or gave up a sack since Cable took over. I await your response.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I think your kid’s football coach is a moron.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
could not agree more

You girlz crack me up. I bet you all still believe in fairy tales, Santa, The Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy and that greasey al is going to lead you to the promised land again. Just like the good old days. I hate to be the one to break the newz to you loozers but the good old days are way behind you and the future hopes of ever having a winning season again won’t happen in any of you girlz life time. DEAL WITH IT. YOU’RE SCREWED!!!!

Word.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
I think your kids football coach should get his ass kicked. Kids play whether or not you want them to. Just because a team loses does not mean you try to kill them in practice to get a win accross. That does not teach dicipline.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
In Too Deep,
sounds as if your son’s football coach does not understand that it is a game. A wonderful game. Not more. Not less.
In a culture where winning is the only thing that matters perhaps your son’s coach can take lessons from Belicheat. I recommend a certain South Park episode.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I think Kiffin is a college head coach, not NFL material.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
well I guess we are stuck with the old man until his son takes over. So either his son will be the one to hire a GM and get the front office in check or he will sell the team to someone who will end this ridiculous horrible run the old man has been in the past five years and move this franchise in the right direction.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
after Al had cut off Kiffins head and was holding it up for all to see, was that MR in that back with the mop that had to clean up that mess?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Cable will bring unity and discipline to this team and he is certainly NOT a Bugel or Shell clone…..
September 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Just a sec ali…
September 30th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
k rock… this dude showed up to practice tonight wearing freaking shoulder pads I think he was actually concidering hitting the players it was unbelievable.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I think Al Davis set the record straight today.
Tom Cable had some great things to say when he spoke as well – I’m impressed and excited to have him at the helm (you could tell he was chomping at the bit for the opportunity).
Kiffin’s agent instructed him to take his grievance directly to Roger Goodell, and leave it out of the media (a wise decision if he ever hopes to be paid, which is unlikely).
Davis was right, and it is clear that Davis loves the Raiders more than anything.
Raider Nation!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
All i hear now is good riddens to Kiffin,Does anyone remember what it was like before he was hired, The Shell era, we now have a team that at least works there A** off, we are young and are in most every game!!! we may not finish well but this will come together. (are Raiders were working as a team) and it is because of Kiffin Not AL!!!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Five years? For sh**s sake people, other than the Belicheats, the Colts and a couple of others, who has won anything in the past five years? My God, some of you are entirely daft about time.
That said, I do believe Al made his best move in years today. The Kid was a tired act.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Stop being so reasonable, your killing me.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Stabler,
If you can’t even remember off the top of your head and have to go dig on nflstats.com show how much Gallery has improved. I am sure we all remember how he was during his Norv and Shell days. But keep on diggin though.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
WOW!!!!!! Al Davis has a new puppet to play with!!!!!!!! I only have two words…………………..1)SEASON 2)OVER!!!!!!!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I hope someone chewed that idiot coach out.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Dude,..on the phone,..hold on…
September 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Before I leave I would like to give you ladies something to think about:
Words to describe greasy al: prick-tease, con artist, senile, decrepid, liar, egotistic, self-ritcheous, sly, shifty…………
Word to describe those who buy into his act: sheeple.
THINK ABOUT IT!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
now that Kitten is running away from his press conf…all the kitten backers seem to have ran as well too.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
to post #48, maybe not many other teams have had multiple superbowl seasons year after year, but we have the WORST 5 year record in the league. You do realize if we get double digit losses this year, its an NFL record for losing seasons?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Correct me if Im wrong, but a few months ago Ive read or heard somewhere that Tom Cable, Greg Knapp and Tom Rathman would be leaving the Raiders after the season because they only had a year left in their contract and they would be a part of Jim Mora’s Coaching Staff when he takes over Seattle next year is this accurate?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Tom Cable looks like every fat loser I know rolled into one. I already miss the Kiffster.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
– Davis said his health is fine “other than the quadriceps and a little trouble with the walking, based on total balance, I’m fine. I’m healthy. You’re going to have to have me around for a while.”

Cable looks like this fat grocery clerk at the store I shop at. Nobody respects the guy. None of the baggers there bag for him. Everybody who shops there just lays into him, because they can. Guy tries to smile and be nice but it does him no good. It’s as if he was born to be treated like crap. Maybe it is Cable. Does he moonlight as a clerk at Ralphs?
September 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Trojan, Cable made the same line that gave up the most sacks and embarrassed themselves on national tv under Shell into one of the top running teams in the league last year. Shut your yap please.

THE RAIDERS’ THEATER OF THE ABSURD ACCORDING TO THE TWERP
Al Davis is a classic pathological liar in the realm of psychology.
He lives in denial and finds enemies all around: The press, the NFL, the officials, and his own head coaches.
TWERPING TRUTH
Domination?
Raiders dominance?
Cable, a dominating coach?
All were comments that Davis repeatedly blurted out when questioned by the press on his firing of Kiffin.
It’s called projection in psychology, as illustrated when Davis referred to Kiffin as “a professional liar.”
Davis is projecting his own lies on an object, in this case Kiffin.
TWERP’S FINAL THOUGHTS
The Cable Guy isn’t the answer.
Kiffin wasn’t the problem.
The press is out to discredit Davis.
But, Davis is the source of the Raiders’ demise and responsible for the Raiders’ horrific record.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I gained some much needed respect for Al today. He proved he was’nt going to be played but to the contrary went on the attack and I’m certain he got the attention of every player on our team.
When asked what does interm coach mean he said “it’s a chance to succeed” Kiff’s attitude seemed like entitlement. I liked how Al described Cable as someone who would domonate the looker room and thats what we need to finish games! He impress’ me as a man that can hold his own.
thanks for all the respones’ to my son’s coach
September 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Whatever ali,..was hardly diggin for Gallery info,..he may not be making headlines daily for being major bust, but hes also NEVER mentioned as pro bowl material,…sorry response took so long,..yappin on the phone.

September 30th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
AFA Gallery pro bowl material.. 0 sacks allowed, 0 penalties. Has anyone even witnessed a guy he is blocking getting pressure? LG is the linchpin to the run system, and we go from bottom of the league to 6th…
Despite the guy’s past rep that he may never get away from, yes, he is pro bowl material.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
My god, are you guys really this stupid?
This whole charade today was Al putting a spin on the whole situation to make Kiffin look insubordinate, so he won’t have to pay him. That’s all Al’s been trying to do since February. Al gets on T.V. and says the same b.s. he always does and now you guys are eating it right up and saying you have a newfound respect for him? He’s lying his ass off, you tards! Wait till Kiffin’s side gets out. Kiffin called off his press conference tomorrow because he’s going to handle this in court. You guys know what this means, don’t you? Witnesses will be called and they’ll be under oath. Many past players and coaches will be under oath. They’ll be testifying as to Al’s patterns of behavior. Kiffin’s not a tycoon but he’s not broke either. His family has money. Believe me, it’s on.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Tom Cable won’t last longer as coach than a case of depends in Al Davis’s house.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Al Davis was still the best owner in NFL. He loves his team and he loves and believed the people he signed. Al Davis is Raiders and Raiders is Al Davis. He admitted his mistakes over the years of coaches who scammed him, so he is Human then, Get Over it.
Media starting DON BANKS of CNN Sports Illustrated (must be paid by New England Patriots)points always the finger on him, but not one of these idiots mentioned other teams that never won a Super Bowl before, Detroit is an example. Not one these idiots mentioned that AL Davis pioneered in drafting (Roman Gabriel) and Hiring Minority (Tom Flores & Art Shell) He hired Women to ran his organization (and still I think the only to do so). He won 3 Super Bowls already (DON BANKS 0) with his team. So Dudes (CNNSI Writers) get a life – you accomplish nothing, nothing at all, you are a disgrace to your profession. AL Davis is the most Loyal CEO you can ever find to run his organization.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
cable changed the worst line in the nfl to what it is today.
we will get wins and the rest of this year is gonna be a fairy tale in the making with the cinderella ending you watch…..the drama is over…..
THE RAIDERS WILL RETURN TO GREATNESS….
September 30th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Goodnight Nation,…trust in Al,..I do…you should too.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Next week cannot come quick enough, bring on the Saints and hopefully they can take the Raiders for granted to their peril….winning cures everything
God knows their defense could not stop Al running the ball let alone a healthy Fargas and Bush.
GO RAIDERS!!!!

3-13!!!!!!AT BEST(THAT’S REALLY PUSHING IT!!). P.S. THANKS AL!!!!!!!
September 30th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Teezoy, Al’s getting the pants sued off of him. Sure, he admitted to his mistakes, but his biggest mistake was slandering Kiffin the way he did today. I don’t think you guys get it. Former Raiders employees are going to be under oath. They’ll be risking perjury if they lie to defend Al. They’re going to fess right up that Al ran Kiffin out of there. Kiffin might wind up owning the Raiders when this is said in done. What happened today was probably the biggest case of slander in pro sports history. Al Davis established himself today as the true charlatan of pro sports owners.

Stabler,
My point was that we are one of the best running team in the game due to our line. The strength of our line is cooper and Gallery. They are the only two that has not been associated with issues since the 2nd half of last year and this year.
We can piss on Gallery and I was one of them before Cable. But CAble was able to see that Gallery was playing the wrong position. Since then, Gallery has been pretty stellar. If we end up winning this year, I would bet he makes the probowl this year or next year.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

September 30th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Im just curious what the excuses are gonna be when Cable fails. And the next guy. And the next guy.
Davis spent so much time blaming Kiffin for everything that he forgot to mention why Norv Turner failed. And how Art Shell got hired. And why ex-players continuously trash this team in the media.
Why did Randy Moss quit on Oakland? Why does Warren Sapp think we’re a joke?
When Rich Gannon is insulting Al Davis, the problem is clearly not Lane Kiffin.
I think im done supporting Al Davis. Win or Lose, after today Im certain that a loss on the field that hurts Al Davis is a win in my book

oak… I realize al’s spinning and does’nt give a rip but loosing to sd with a 15 point lead at half is not acceptable! ever!
Kiff was’nt getting thru anymore and probably did position himself for a college job last year. Nothing could be worse than the constant bs we’ve been endurring game after game, hell we almost coughed up the game against kc.
somehow were going to scrath out 6-8 wins this year and that will be fantastic! talk about setting the bar low
September 30th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
An absolute embarassment to the entire NFL. The raiders are owned and led into the ground by a mindless has been. If he really loved the team he would sell it. What a disgrace of someone who was once great.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
#93 wins!! nice post!
September 30th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
i was gonna type some thoughts but Oakglenn described them pretty much exactly. How can so many of you be such followers? You’ll believe anything Al says wont you? He’s manipulative, sly, and never takes the blame for anything. Today he did the same thing he’s been doing for years now, pointing the finger at somene else. There’s a reason no “real” coaches want to come here. There’s a reason he’s hated by so many in the NFL. Mostly, there’s a reason we have one of the worst football franchises the last decade or two minus a few good gruden years. Al Davis. You all need to stop worshiping him, and start supporting our team. He’s brought it down to a laughingstock.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Do you really think Al did not go over this statement with his lawyer?
Al has all he needs to hang Kiffin.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
You know the more I look at both interviews, I think both were wrong. I think Davis did not let go of full control and Kiffin went into this hearing about how AL is and its a good opportunity if you can handle it and he let that get in his head. I think Kiffin went in thinking he could do whatever and was told he could not and went into child mode. Thinking that everyone knows how AL is and that he would come out of this looking good. I think AL hired exactly who he thought he hired himself and two ALs will not work. AL needs to understand that he has to let a coach coach and Kiff needs to know when not to overstep his bounds. I have never heard of someone being in a position of power firing someone in a position of power without consulting his boss, unless he controls everything already. Too bad for the fans and the players. Heres hoping that Cable can take over and keep order and win some games.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
K-Rock, In To Deep, it’s MoRon posting as me so be careful. He’s here to ruin things and make a mess as usual.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
David…
Please add up the wins and losses over the last decade or two and you will see that outside of the last 5 years, this team has been very competitive.
Don’t make stupid remarks. It just makes you look bad.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I hope you Al Davis morons can deduce this indisputed piece of logic:
” The inescapable conclusion is that stories regarding problems between Davis and Kiffin were not the creation of the media, but by Davis and Kiffin.”
September 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I don’t know David. We arguably have the best offensive line coach in the league now as our head coach. He wanted to come here, and he wanted to take the Head Coaching job.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Tee Martin? Jerry, did you really have to post that? I feel safer already. Actually, Tee did have some daring, it’s just that the ball popped out of his hands so many times, although he was understandably concerned about being killed. And his first pass completion in the NFL was to Jerry Rice.
Looks like Kiffin picked the wrong guy to undermine, eh? Davis is too well connected, a owner’s club member, a rich man. “(Jerry Jones?)” I remember an NBC announcer saying that Davis may have a lot of enemies, but he also has a lot of friends. An Al Davis press conference is always a blast, I wish there were more, but it is what it is. Kiffin is going to find it rough going to get a good job at first after this one.
We’ll see about Cable. Bye week will be welcome.
McDonald, sir, good writeup. I wish I could have been there, this will have to do. Take a break, man.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
The Keyword being “Counterproductive”
It’s clear Davis despised Kiffin for some time, and the feeling was mutual. Yet they went some eight-plus counterproductive months before coming to Tuesday’s unforgettable theater.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Kiffin’s body language betrayed him today. He was lying through his teeth.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Oak would never post like that….he has been a strong supporter of al.
The best thing Al did today was to checkmate Kiff for all those points. Kiff’s best answer was I am not goign to get into that….well hasn’t he been getting into that for the past 4 games about the organization and even last year…..all the sudden now he is trying to take the high road. He hung Ryan out to dry and now he says he doesnt want to get into it.

September 30th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Rock…he called out Mortensen and the best Mort can do is to say he has connections within the Raider Executive org…oh wait…he can’t reveal his sources….Like Al said, maybe it was his admin secretary…If mort was a real man, he would stand up and defend himself for being called out.

Wow. Don’t any of you guys have jobs??? Shouldn’t you guys be working??? No wonder the economy is going down the toilet. Half the workers in the country must be on this site bitching.
Priest has it right. Jeeeez, relax. Kiff did the interviews. Notice the last word. Interview(S). Capital S. Plural. You know what they talked about??? Football, the AFC West, what Lofton could bring to the Raiders, how Turner ran his offense, how to improve our recievers, how to practice, what to do in minicamps. Davis asked Kiff, “can you work with him?” “Yeah, it’d be a good hire.”
Lofton leaves to go to the Super Bowl activities in Phoenix, Raiders organization works out a deal, they fax the deal to Lofton’s hotel, there you have it. Kiff’s not involved in that aspect. You know where Lane Kiffin is during this process????? Watching film. OFF COLLEGE PLAYERS YOU KNUCKLEHEADS!!!!! You know why??? That’s his job. Working out a deal with Lofton in NOT HIS JOB. oh and BTW, we have no confirmation Lofton has been hired have we???
Priest do you know a good baby sitter to come in here??
Lastly, the mods are editing my posts even tho I am ending them with positive public service announcements to the young people reading this blog. With that in mind, no more foul languange. At least for the time being. And Lofton would be an EXCELLENT HIRE.

Your guess is as good as mine.
THAT WAS FROM LAST NIGHT………
From who I know the Interview was held by Kiffin…
September 30th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
K-Rock, first of all 5 years is a long time, so even if thats all it was, its still upsetting. I didn’t include the Gruden years in with what I was saying, but lets face it, they weren’t very good even before Gruden got there either. Those were the notorious Mike White, Joe Bugel, and Art Shell years that everyone always talks down on.
Oakglenn, I hope there really IS something to be optimistic about, but I dont know that being the best line coach in the league necesarily will translate into being a good head coach. If he’s another Davis yes man, we’re in trouble.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I’m glad this is all over…
I knew this was comming…I said Kiffy was out after lossess to Buffalo and san diego…
The fact of the matter is Kiffin was 5-15…..thats winning 1 outta every 4 games…..
He sucked…
He should go back to USC, but I bet he is not even wanted there!!

I want Kiff to be here. I’ve said a ton of times, I think things are gonna settle down and it’s back to business as usual. I don’t think the franchise was ruined before Kiff got here, but it was awfully close to being ruined.
I think alot of good has come out of this. I think Kiff knows his voice is being heard. I think Al knows obviously his voice is heard. I think the Raider Nations voice is being heard. I think that’s all a good thing. I think Kiff is here for the long haul, and I think the Godfather is gonna get him some coaching help on the offensive side and some player help on the defensive side. I think this is all gonna have positive implications. Just if some of you guys would help me escort all the weak cry babies who were “out” over the side of the ship. I can’t think of a more fuked up organization period, maybe the GOP, maybe.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
alisgod, whats your point there? we dont know how well it worked out because Al got rid of him not even a season and a half in. His record might not have been great, but this place was a mess when he got here. It takes time to turn a team around. I dont know how many times i’ve seen people explain that here, but it doesn’t sink in with most of you. You can’t take a 2-14 team to the playoffs in one season. This was kiffins’s second year, and the team was competitive with playoff caliber teams so far this season. Al wont give anyone enough time to build a winner. Screw him, he’s far from god.

81% of the country feel AL DAVIS is responsible for the failures of the Raiders.
I’ll be back when the Raiders keep losing the same for the rest of this season and next season with the new new coach. Then everyone will have forgotten this PR stunt, Spin-Fest Al just put on and realize he’s still the problem and not Kiff.
I hope Kiff goes to Denver and humiliates us on the field. I hope he breaks Al’s heart and buries him. Literally.

Koolkell, you win, how’s that? you happy, now what?
Now how ’bout the Russell was 300 lbs. story?
How ’bout Kiffin isn’t wearing Raider Gear they’re negotiating a buy out during the Senior Bowl.
We know the media is at the HQ everyday and should have inside info in most cases and its obvious that most of what was written by Jerry was validated today.
When I saw Jerry today at the HQ he kept looking at me like; I know you don’t I.
Jerry I want to be the first to say great reporting throughout this entire process. I don’t agree with your views but you were pretty accurate on most all accounts.
By the way I spoke to DMC today after the PC and he didn’t seem bothered by it at all. I said Darren it’s a shame that you have to go through this stuff so early in your rookie year and he just shrugged it off and said “it’s all good, no big deal” that really took me by surprise. I was expecting some degree of anxiety of frustration and it as nothing.
I talked to several people at the HQ and they all expressed relief that Kiffin was finally gone. Just thought you should know.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
all this hate on a man that barely was given the chance to change around an organization…..how sad.
WITH CABLE WE WILL BE ABLE!
September 30th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
embaressed… what did expect the player’s to say that they hated the guy. Kiff is’nt out right confrantational he’s more passive aggresive so that he could remain on the fence with everyone. I think this team needs a coach that is more direct with the players, it defenantly wont hurt!
September 30th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
When will some of your wake up? Davis can blame Kiffen all he wants. Just like he blamed White, Bugel, and every other horrible coach he’s hired. In fact, he has to hire Kiffen cause no one else wanted the job. Doesn’t anyone else remember that? Look at all the FA we bought to come here. Wow; what an impact they are having. Al can try to blame everyone else but it comes down to him as the owner. We don’t underachieve; we’re actually a bad football team and will continue to be because we don’t have a decent head coach. We haven’t had one since Gruden left and if you don’t believe that just look at his record as a Raider. Callahan took Gruden’s team to the SB but lost. All of you who side with Al are part of the problem. We true Raider fans can see what’s wrong with this team cause we aren’t blinded by the past. Just look at our record the past 5 years. Look at the players who don’t come here. If any of you think these players would play here for free cause they like losing then you’re as crazy as Al. Good teams keep and attract good players. The Raiders aren’t and haven’t been a good team for a long time.
September 30th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Someone pointed this out: Mike Nolan is wearing the exact same gear as Kiff!!! So what does this mean?????????? Let me tell you what it means: it means according to asswipe Adam Shefter Mike Nolan can never coach the Raider organization!!! Hope you guys get the joke.
Look head coaches are wearing under armour gear because of a sponsorship clause in the contract Under Armour has with the Senior Bowl and the NFL!!! You guys are such freaking knuckleheads!!! And no one more so than Adam “Denver Broncos rule” Shefter. Don’t believe me???? There’s the exact same clause in the NFL league contract for Head Coaches: they have to wear their team gear so the league can shill stuff. Still don’t believe me??? Ask Mike Nolan. He and Jack Del Rio had to get league permission this year to NOT wear that gear and wear suits instead. Sheeeeeesh. The sky is falling, the sky is falling….

BTW Cable really seems like he’s very capable to me. It was like I was seeing John Madden taking over again.
I recall feeling very uneasy and trying to see why Mr Davis would hire a guiy like Kiffin when Kiffin was hired but later talking myself into giving Kiffin a chance like when Gruden was hired and everyone laughed.
I was hoping that Mr Davis had found a young diamond in the rough. But when I saw Cable sitting there in his induction I was feeling just maybe we lucked into the right guy. He certainly looks and acts the part of a hard nosed, no nonsense field general. I’ve watched him on the sideline and have been very impressed with his forcfulness and in-your-face approach. I really think that this just may be what we’ve been needing. JMHO
September 30th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Many of you wishing for Al’s death don’t want to admit it, but the man finally broke his silence and exposed Kiffin as a fraud. I even read some say they thought Davis and Ryan were trying to lose to force Kiffin out. If anything, it was the other way around.
Kiffin leaked info to the media as an “inside source,” and tried to portray himself as a victim, knowing the Raiders wouldn’t comment and reporters would eat it up. Now we know the truth, and hopefully the players can see who the true distraction was…e.g. who leaked Walker’s injury to the press? And fueled constant speculation about the team while preaching about not worrying about distractions?
He put the D in position to fail by misuse of the clock, TERRIBLE playcalling and inability to adjust. Then was all too happy to point the finger. What a savior!
The remaining staff and players are the major reason for the improvements we’ve seen. If anything, I’m excited to see us take a lead into the 4th and witness Cable and Knapp call plays designed to keep that lead.
Kiffin doesn’t deserve a penny more and I support Davis on taking his time and letting this douche hang himself.

Stabler now it makes sense to me the way he used Russell, He didn’t want Al to be right.
For the life of me, I just couldn’t understand his refusal to use him last year as well as this year according to what I’ve seen this kid do his entire college career.
Kiffin IMO was coaching to prove to Mr Davis that he kew more about how to run the organization than Mr Davis did. And anything that he could do to garner public and fan sentiment, he did. It was a stupid game of one upsmanship. He never really focused on just doing his job. JMHO

I gaurantee that all the problems we see, cable and knapp see as well especially not playing our young recievers.
Its exciting to know that changes will be implemented, we can only hope that cable and knapp wont create worse problems but following a 5-15 record would be pretty hard to do.

What do you mean In Too Deep?? Everyone especially MR wanted to turn all the personnel decisions over to Kiffin. Kiff thought Moss was done. Kiff thought Jam was no good. Kiff started Lamont Jordan. Kiff brought in Mike Williams. Kiff switched between McCown and Culpepper. Kiff got all of those right. No wonder we have no receivers out there.

Believe me if you guys ever stood on the sidelines for an NFL game, or NCAA football game for that matter some of these coaches are going STARK RAVING CRAZY. And I mean raving and drooling crazy!!!!! One of the reason there’s position coaches is in some instances the players can’t talk to the Head Coach or other players. They’re not allowed to. They have to go thru the chain of command, which are the position coaches. So when you hear a couple of guys can’t get along, think Gilbride and Ryan, Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones, Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent. Don’t worry about it, it happens.
September 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

September 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Go watch the 2nd half of the last 2 games and tell me that firing him was a mistake. Blame it all on the D, just like he did. Kiffin knew it would be easy to win the media battle and gain support, but didn’t expect Al to counter by calling him out and going into such detail about what a sneaky, lying weasel he is.

Seems like most of you forget how bad this team was before Kiffin took over. Al Davis is and has been the root of the Raider’s woeful past 5 (and soon to be 6) seasons. Kiffin may have done some things that Al didn’t like but he brought improvement to the organization.
Those of you who really believe Kiffin had much input into the draft, signing of free agents and control over the whole team as Al would like you all to believe are lost.
Today’s PC was Al’s chance to strike first. He did that and now all the sheep are happy. Let’s not forget that Kiffin is not the first coach Al refused to pay after he fired them.
I will still be a Raiders fan and root for them every miserable Sunday but I am really looking forward to the day when L.A. finally gets a team so I can root for an organization with some sanity (hopefully).

He would be a HUGE (in more ways than one) help to our entire team!!!! March 1st, 2007 at 2:18 pm
A lot of bashing of Jeff Garcia.
Rich, coming from the fan base a team that has won less games over the last two seasons than Garcia won last year alone.
Jeff Garcia is special to the Raiders for two reasons:
One is that he’s a veteran quarterback with leadership skills, but more importantly because his more west coast oriented skills are just what the team needs at the qb position to rid this organization of the unholy stinch that Al Davis and his brain fart, the Vertical Offense, has left on it. Jeff Garcia is an antagonist to everything that Al Davis believe in, just like Gannon was, which is why Garcia will be every bit as good as Gannon was when he was here.
If anything has been proven in recent years, the farther the Raiders go in the opposite direction of Al’s philosophy, the more they win. The more they go Al’s way, the more they lose.
Al Davis is a natural born loser. Garcia is the carbon opposite of him, genetically, spiritually, and physically. Look Al Davis. He’s never had a drink or smoked, and he can’t make it to the bathroom. He’s 80, not 97. An 80 year old who’s never drank or smoked should be in good enough shape to get around on their own, barring any diseases related to old age. But Al Davis is a physical weakling, along with being a mental weakling. In fact, his fast physical decline is in conjuncture with his fast mental decline. He’s never been strong in either category.
Jeff Garcia, on the other hand, is strong, mentally and physically, like Rich Gannon. He’s a sharp decision maker, and he’s everything we need to permanently rid our offense of the dysfunctional, poisonous Al Davis mindset.
ART SHELL’S HAT!
Girl, I’m a freak, you shouldn’t say those things!

Your guess is as good as mine.
THAT WAS FROM LAST NIGHT………
From who I know the Interview was held by Kiffin…
P.S. Yes this was before Lofton was hired, and Al said today that Kiffin had control of the coaches he hired. I know for a fact that Al was trying to get rid of Kiffin before the season started I think the real thing that made Al mad was the Arkansas Job and the Rob Ryan Fiasco.

ESPN Poll Results
Q. Who is most responsible for the Raiders’ 5-15 record since 2007?
101,332 votes cast:
Al Davis 81%
Lane Kiffin 4%
The players 15%
I guess this just says that the general public is aware of the control that Al Davis wields over all aspects that have to do with the Raiders. It’s unlikely that Davis’ version of what actually happened is going to fly when all the dust settles.
It would be pure karma for Kiffin to be hired as the new KC head coach. That way three ex-Raider coaches could make life miserable for Al Davis’ remaining years. Just think, our beloved team in the cellar for the foreseeable future.
It’s time for Al Davis and his cronies, Birren, Herrera & Taylor to exit stage left and to never return. They have taken a once great franchise and made them the laughing stock of the NFL.
September 30th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE:
Lane Kiffin did NOT want to be a Raider!!!
The most significant fact to come out of the press conference was his disliking of Jamarcus Russell…and for that I say screw that piece of crap!
Trust me, I’m the first to admit that Oakland is one of the worst run organizations in pro sports. But answer me this:
DID YOU EVER HEAR KIFFIN CRITICIZE HIMSELF OR ANY DECISION/MISTAKE HE EVER MADE???
He was never as critical of himself as he was of others in the media….and we can all agree he’s made some bone-head decisions in his short career.

We’re screwed. Cable is a puppet. The zbs has been around forever. It’s not that great. Lots of DC’s know how to beat it. Cable is going to be a Davis lackey like Joe Bugel. See that picture I posted of Davis? That’s scary. We’ll never have another winning season as long as Davis is in charge. I’ll bet anyone. Any amount. You name it. Bitches.

I only took in the proceedings on TV, but the atmosphere in the room at the Al Davis press conference in Oakland on Tuesday afternoon must have been extraordinary.
For starters, the irony was so thick you cut it with a football. There was Davis, the ever-bizarre, ever-mysterious owner of the Raiders, explaining that he had to fire second-year head coach Lane Kiffin for cause, because he had “disgraced” the organization.
“I don’t think it was any one thing,” Davis said, in his sometimes disjointed comments. “It was a cumulative thing. I think the pattern just disturbed me.”
Are we still talking about Kiffin? Because the words “Right back at you, Al,” keep popping into my head every time I read those quotes. Can Davis really not see how those accusations might not apply to him, the guy who has made the Raiders and their head coaching position a national punchline?
There’s hanging one’s self with your own words, and then there’s what Davis did Tuesday with the cameras rolling. In telling Lane to finally hit the road — I’ve been waiting months to use that line — Davis thought he could build a case against his young coach that any sane, rational person could wrap their mind around.
Which is why we were through the looking glass on this one, folks, because when has sanity and rationality had anything to do with the Raiders these past six years? Dysfunction, thy name is Oakland. Like Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell and Kiffin before him, new head coach Tom Cable is now on the hot seat, because that’s how you start your coaching tenure in Oakland, and that’s how you end it.
Later, in an interview on ESPN that played a little like the opposition party’s rebuttal after a state of the union address, Kiffin looked and sounded like a guy who’s just happy to have made it out of Hotel California alive. And why not? He’s still only 33, and failing at the Raiders job is anything but a career-ender. Just ask Mike Shanahan or Turner, half of the AFC West’s four-man coaching contingent.
“I was embarrassed to watch that,” Kiffin said of Davis’s airing of the Raiders’ dirty laundry. “I was kind of embarrassed for him, to tell you the truth.”
Yes, but embarrassment has been a perpetual state in Oakland from the start of 2003 on. Since the Raiders played in Super Bowl XXXVII against Tampa Bay — did they really make that game or were we just hallucinating? — Oakland has gone 20-64 over the next five-plus seasons, losing at least 11 games every season. Coaches, players and personnel executives have come and gone, but one man has remained: Davis. And because he has, the misery rolls on.
Some will now speculate whether the Raiders latest coaching debacle provides the tipping point that finally serves to remove Davis from the picture? Don’t waste your time waiting for the intervention. This isn’t Donald Rumsfeld we’re talking about. Davis isn’t going anywhere on his own accord, and there’s no one in Oakland capable of making him step aside for the good of the organization.
All the Raiders did Thursday was change coaches yet again and put their dysfunction on display for everyone to see. But it wasn’t really anything that doesn’t go on behind close doors nearly every day in Oakland. We just got one of those rare opportunities to see and listen in to the whole charade for a change.
In all its irony.
September 30th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
All you guys talking about leaking to the media are missing the point. The team is disfunctional and it’s going around and around chasing it’s tail in the same old story just with different people. It’s about the owner, the front office and the scouts being old and unable to deal with football in this day and age. The head coach matters because when you look at the teams that are sucessful year after year, their hc is secure, they have GM’s and they are talking football not soap opera.

It’s just crazy.

What I want to know is what coach Al gave Lane a break on due to his inexperience?
October 1st, 2008 at 12:22 am
Hobs he was talking about Lane being inexperienced. The coaches he was referring to prob was Ryan and Hanson, maybe Millard and Martindale. Who knows..
October 1st, 2008 at 12:23 am
I think Lane wanted to fire the entire def staff and let his Dad overhaul the mess that is Rob Ryan.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:32 am
I have always said that Ryan is a good coach, he just has bought into Al’s way and now they are trying to run away from the notion that Al has any input in the defensive scheme because it just doesn’t work and they would like to save that embarrassment to him I guess.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:33 am
I do like the 3 quarters of physical football the defense is playing but some of those players are only 3 quarters worth of football.

BHP, My Bear has a headache now. You have him growling in his cage since everyone has exposed me being his wife.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:40 am
Dell – you actually missed it – when the news broke earlier this morning i had a two word comment -
“this stinks”
that was my shortest comment ever
somebody called me on that too though – i am a wordy b@stard tho, never denied that.
Moving forward all we can do now is hope to build on what kiffin was trying to do – al didn’t wipe out the staff or anything, didn’t hire an old crony to run the team or anything, and didn’t make any long term commitments – I think Cable is a solid pick, I would have preferred a 2 year deal with Rathman, but this gives Davis time to monitor the situation and find a guy he can work with – I expected playoffs this year with a minimum 10 win season based upon being 1 year into the new scheme, the offseason acquisitions, and the schedule. I counted 14 winnable games – giving the pats and the chargers on the road victories – we’re down three out of the 14 but the pats are now beatable and I’ll give us a chance against SD at thier b.s. stadium along with the donks as long as we blitz. We can still win 10 games this year and I’ll still be disappointed if we don’t get 8 – Below are my 9 winnable games on paper based on how teams are playing so far – bear in mind, I am a believer in the “any given sunday” and this is optomistic – I’m giving us a win against tampa assuming they will sit people at the end of the year.
@ New Orleans Saints loss
New York Jets Win
@ Baltimore Ravens Win
Atlanta Falcons Win
Carolina Panthers Win
@ Miami Dolphins Win
@ Denver Broncos Loss
Kansas City Chiefs Win
@ San Diego Chargers Loss
New England Patriots Win
Houston Texans Win
@ Tampa Bay Buccaneers win
There are a few we could easily lose (balt, TB, Saints, NYJ)- let’s see how we do against the Saints, and just play it by ear – the important thing at this stage is to do the same thing as before with Kiffin – look for progress – our next step is finish these damn games – like I said in the offseason – we could beat Buffalo and SD at home, and I thought we’d beat Denver – I consider the Donko game an abberation – forget about it and let’s see how we play them next time now that we’re blitzing – anyway, we had Buf and SD beat, so my prediction of 3-1 was accurate – Cable’s aggression, along with a staff that is now forced to circle the wagons and really bring this team together could get us over that hump. We’re close, I know it, and with a blitzing scheme to mitigate our run d weakness (yeah, it’s still there) we can win.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:00 am
Who knows what is true, but I’ll go on record stating (the obvious) this:
1. Kiffin and Davis didn’t get along – I liked what kiffin did as far as getting rid of the Tom Walsh scheme, purging our roster of scholarship players, and brining in a good staff on the offense. That said, Davis owns the team and is its GM, so I don’t like that Kiffin couldn’t suck it up and keep his pie hole shut – if he got to finish the season, and got one more offseason with FA’s and draft picks, he might have been able to do what he set out to do – Kiffin screwed himself and us by not playing the Davis situation correctly, and he knew (like he didn’t talk to Gruden whose father works for him!) what he was in for.
2. Knowing that Kiffin and Davis didn’t get along, Kiffin would have exited asap and we’d be in this same situation, except Kiffin would have run his mouth and made other coaches not want to come here – we would have been recruiting out of High School, JC, or desperate retreads – Davis saved face for him and the franchise and he may have done enough to keep the scheme on O the same.
3. After Davis denied Kiffin the opportunity to fire Ryan (and I was all for it), acquired Hall and Wilson, we were stuck with the man scheme on D for 3 more years – can’t have those dollars playing zone when you’re built for man.
4. I loved Kiffin’s approach as far as shaking things up and taking it slow on offense to protect JR but if he didn’t win after 3 years he was gone anyway – he may have been too conservative trying to build this thing.
5. To expedite the next step (finishing), we may need a fire ball like Cable – I didn’t like Kiffin’s approach to Division games – they hate us, we need to get up more for those.
6. Since Kiff was gone one way or the other, it made sense to can him – just should have been in january.
5.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:07 am
Al lost me the minute he traded Gruden to Tampa because that told me winning on the field didn’t matter to him anymore. more than less everything he’s done for the past twenty years has been crap and nothing will change until he either changes or leaves.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:41 am
In all seriousness…
Those of you telling us to “move forward”?
Fat chance.
Maybe we’ll move forward when we have a winning season.
Heck, I’d be impressed if we won 3 straight, and may at that point start to give Bugel..I mean, Cable the benefit of the doubt. But we haven’t even done that in 6 years.
Did you read that? We haven’t won 3 games straight in 6 years. And, of course, that’s ALL Kiffin’s fault..
No, we are not going to move forward. Every ill that hits this franchise in the next couple of years will be linked to the Kiffin fiasco. You guys might as well get used to it.
BTW, MistaBrown, I think Kiff canceled his press conference tomorrow. But he is going to the league. We’ll see what happens after that. He might sue. That’s probably why he’s avoiding the press conference, because he’ll probably be suing the Raiders for slander. His evidence? We watched it earlier today.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:44 am
Jedi Raider, you’re certifiably insane. I thought you collective guys got it…
October 1st, 2008 at 2:16 am
If it was not for the players and coaches who still have to work in this terrible environment, I wish the Raiders will not win one more game until Al Davis is gone.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:24 am
BlackHole Priest:
You’re right about Jerry’s reporting during this mess. He says in this piece that the problems reported “were not the creation of the media, but by
Davis and Kiffin”. That’s Davis AND Kiffin.
Kiffin changed the attitude of a team with a bad attitude and unified the players.
Kiffin brought order and purpose to the Raiders and the team is greatly improved because of him.
On the other hand, he apparently actually was trying to leave mid way through his first season even though he had a three year contract. He was trying to go to Arkansas rather than stay and be head coach with the Raiders. That’s not much of a committment. I could see where that would irritate Al Davis.
There were also questions about his play calling and his time management during a game.
Then there was the commotion constantly caused by Kiffin criticizing team operations to the press rather than to Davis.
Regardless, Kiffin was the best coach that we have had for half a decade.
It’s over and it’s a relief. What Kiffin built is still there and the new coach is very familar with the team. We already know that Cable is a great offensive line coach and has the loyalty of those players. There are also reports that he may be a good offensive coach. He’s also the kind of guy who will get in a few faces and that has been needed in respect to players and coaches.
Last week we dominated SD for the first half. We dominated SD with Fargas, McFadden, Warren, Burgess, Aso, etc. playing hurt, barely playing or not playing at all.
After the bye week they should all be back to face New Orleans on the road.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:49 am
England Raider,
Kiffin wanted to leave and get the Ark. job because he was already conflicting with Al at that point.
Did you hear Al yesterday? He let the cat out of the bag that Kiffin didn’t want J Russ. This was mere weeks after Kiffin was hired. This means the national sports media was right: Kiffin and Davis clashed FROM THE START. That’s why Kiffin sought the Ark. job. You’re making it sound like everything was ok and then suddenly Kiffin just wanted to jet. We now know that wasn’t the case.
You go on to say that there have been reports that Cable “may be a good offensive coach”.
“MAY”?!?
That’s not a ringing endorsement. We’d better hope he IS. But then again, if he was, why wasn’t he hired as HC initially? Why haven’t any other teams considered him as HC? Did Al Davis outbid any team seeking him as a HC to get him here as an assistant? Face it, this guy “may” more likely be an empty suit. He did not invent zone blocking. And, the zbs is not the end all be all of NFL blocking schemes. It’s defensible. If it weren’t, the Broncos would have 10 Lombardi trophies.
Now, Kiffin was obviously green too but we know he at least had college experience building offenses. As far as we know, Cable has only ordered hogs to hit the sled. Something beats nothing.
If you guys are going to make a case that Cable is an upgrade over Kiffin, you’d better come up with more than just this silly blocking scheme, which is no secret around the league. And, you guys are going to have to come up with more than the players supposedly liking him. Did you hear Nnamdi yesterday on ESPN? The players liked Kiff, too.
Face it, this is a thorough clusterf’k. I would use the term lipstick on a pig if the politicos hadn’t jacked it in recent months. But to roll with the analogy, Al Davis certainly did put on his best Sarah Palin performance yesterday. His dandy about our FA acquisitions being “great players” was about as crazy as Palin claiming she has foreign policy experience because she’s a few ice fishing holes away from Russia.
Embarrassing. For the nation, in Palin’s case, and for the Raider Nation, in Al’s. Well, at least the country’s going in a new direction come January.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:53 am
This just simply isn’t about Kiffin its about the protracted failure to win.
With the league fundamentally geared to generate parity it’s remarkable to win consistently over a number of years. It’s also remarkable to lose consistently over a number of years.
Players come and go, schedules are soft or tough, good luck and bad luck evens out over time.
Well run organisations win consistently.
Poorly run organisations lose consistently.
The longer you win for or lose for the less likely it is that you’re winning or losing by good or bad fortune.
The more likely it is you’re winning or losing because that’s what you are.
4-12
5-11
4-12
4-12
2-14
1-3
I really don’t care if Al Davis calls the plays makes all the personnel decisions etc or in fact delegates everything. He is responsible, either because he’s making decisions or he’s hiring those that do.
At yesterdays conference Al Davis said (paraphrasing) ‘I don’t want to win in the media I want to win on the field.’
If he really cared about winning then here’s what he’d be doing. He’d be studying how the consistently successful NFL franchises of the last few years operate. Comparing and contrasting with the current approach and making the neccessary changes.
To truly understand how I feel about Al, what terrible a job I feel he’s doing and the low esteem I hold him in, I ask you to imagine how much respect, admiration and awe I’d feel for an owner who delivered over the last five and a half years the following record.
12-4
11-5
12-4
12-4
14-2
3-1

And, big whoop that Cable will get in the players faces and command respect. What good is it when they’ll just circumvent his authority and go right to Al? This team will not change till someone gets in Al’s face. Lane Kiffin, a lot of us Raider fans, perhaps even the majority of us, thank you for at least trying. We wish you the best.

NEWS FLASH: Scientists have discovered a little blue pill that will keep Al Davis aka greazy al alive and kicking for another 100 years. This discovery leads experts to agree that the fate of “fader nashun” is in jeopardy for the remainder of the century. Richard Higgenbottom who led the group of scientist to the discovery of the little blue pill reported that one mans gain is “fader nashuns” loss. Stay tuned for further updates.

Calm the F@# down. Okay, the last five years have sucked a@# but my goodness, the last 30 have been kick a@#. Name one team whose won as much as we have? (without cheating – eliminate SF, Den, NE) You people buy into the ESPN crap philosophy that you must win now – unless you’re an NFC east team or any team from MA or NY then we’ll slob your @#$@ until you win for as long as it takes. I’ll take five years of misery from the old man for the thirty years of pride he’s given us and probably the next 20 years of pride to come. And please – the Cowboys? Jerry Jones is an Al Davis protege. He meddles, he controls, he picks staff, he makes draft picks, it’s just that he’s gotten lucky the past couple of years and ESPN has gone Jenna Jameson for him and bent over for whatever is given! I hate the cowboys but JJ is just like Al so I respect him and he too will fall on hard times. We all do.

Reply to 338 Bleeding Silver & Black.
According to my rapid calcs since 1960 (48 years) to game 4 this year our culmulative record is 0.558. This winning record masks an inconvenient truth.
Our record over the last 30 years is 0.507
Our record over the last 20 years is 0.464
Our record over the last 10 years is 0.412
Our Record over the last 5 years is 0.235
Basically if you start talking about the last 30 years in total what comes out of our record is mediocrity not kick ass we’ve been almost exactly average that time frame.
And when you look at more recent times the last 20 years or so we have been a losing franchise.
What’s more the decline is accelerating.
These aren’t hard times BS&B this is endemic institutional failure.

How sobering these numbers actually are.
I became a fan in ‘83, 25 years ago since when the Raiders are a sub par 0.491
My daughter was born 14th Jan 2003 in her life time the raiders are 0.238
The earliest my daughter could see a Raiders team with a break even record in her life time would be the end of the 2010 season. And hey all we’d need to do is win the next 44 straight.

How did you all come to be Raider fans?
Post 338 got me wondering that to myself, and initially it was because “it’s the team that Tim Brown was playing for”. Loved Tim Brown and felt sorry for him that if he didn’t get half the acclaim that he should have … I digress.
Why do you continue to be a Raider fan?
The Raiders, with the exception of a couple of Gruden years, have pretty much sucked or been mediocre the entire time that I have been a fan (post 85/L.A. Raiders) … I’m sure most of the bandwagon fans are gone by now, so I assume a lot of you have had similar Raider upbringings. No offense to the older guys who lived the glory years.
I became a Raider fan (not just Brown) probably because it’s the team that gave me the enjoyment of watching competitive players such as Christiansen, Bo, Howie, Woodson, Fargas, Morrison, Nnamdi and countless others whom I originally rooted for as a supporting cast to Tim Brown. It’s also because I have (blind) faith in the charisma that brought that team (and successful teams of past) to us, and can hopefully bring success to us fans again … Al Davis. (admittedly sheepish, I know).
That hope, based on what we know about how much this man wants to better the team and win, is what gets me up at 2AM or 5AM on a Sunday night/Monday morning to watch these Raiders on a small computer streaming screen in a far away country, and that hope is what drives me crazy every time the Raiders implode and embarrass themselves through tactics that us fans may or may not agree with but nevertheless ultimately comes from the mind of the charisma.
Sorry for the long post, but after watching the press conference, I still believe in Al Davis’ will to win, and will continue to support, ever more frequent dysfunction and all. My stance, I admit, would be a dangerous one if I were talking about a political leader, but hey, it’s a sports team which is ultimately funded and run by Davis … you can’t overthrow it.
From the passion visible in most of your posts I get a feeling that (venting/ranting and all) you still believe… but it’s good to re-affirm that once in a while : )

tolworth raider, those stats are fine and you are right, but do that with all the teams in the NFL and see what their stats are.
October 1st, 2008 at 7:08 am
The fact of the matter is that Al Davis is still a great power broker and knows how to destroy and humiliate people and play the legal game.
The problem is, the only people he destroys are his own people and not the other teams in the NFL.
He has lost his eye for talent and schemes. He should focus on being an owner and drop the football aspects of his duties.

CALM DOWN…wether Kiffin is here or not, the RAIDERS still have the same players we were ALL excited about at the begening of the season! If you al take a look at the remainder of our schedule we can still pull off a .500 season!
The question is do we want to…or should we just give up and look forward to Al drafting another bust in the top 5 of next years draft!

Los9091, There’s a lot more here than just changing coaches and then we start to win and finish 500. We still have to be able to score TD’s and that means we have to establish a passing game. I don’t think you just turn a switch or wave a magic wand and we have a passing attach….WE HAVE NO RECEIVERS. Russell is still learning, still all the same players. They aren’t going to just start playing better. They’ve played pretty good this year, just can’t score.

I’ve coached on and off for about 12 years and i’ve seen two “real” reasons for that BS. 1. they can’t plan a practice if you put a gun to there head and 2. they can’t make adjustments and teach kids. It isn’t as easy as people think. As far as Al busting Kiffin………WOW! Hey Kiffin West Arkansas Polytech University needs a WR’s Coach and Water Technician. Things are looking up. I expect an immediate and dramatic turnaround. And one more thing. In the end, Kiffin may well end up being awarded his remaining salary (or not), but if he tries to sue for slander, he has NO CHANCE. This just in: it’s not slander to call someone a liar, when you can point to documented instances of them lying. It’s actually very simple. And I don’t know whether anyone else noticed this or not, but last night, in his ESPN interview, when Kiffin was asked point blank, which one is it, did Davis last speak with you the week before the Denver game, as you claim, or were there other times since then, as he claims? Kiffin did not answer that question, but rather went on to say how just because something is written on paper, doesn’t make it true.

346 Raider0525
The thing that shocked me in those numbers was that somewhere in my perception the Raiders are a winning team. Sure a few bad years but basically a solid winning team, consistently above the gain line.
Which in my 25 years of following the team is flat out not true.
I’m sure running that analysis for other teams would be interesting but I don’t think you need to analyse lots of other teams to know that greater the .500 is good and les than .500 is bad.
I don’t think you need to be evil to suggest that if you were trying to analyse how well a franchise is being run you’re best off weighting your consideration to more recent history rather than the 1960s.
Anyway in a sense it’s immaterial. It’s not like my affections are transferable. I’ll always support the Raiders, no matter what they put me through. But that doesn’t mean I have to be blind to the reality about them.

Donedeal you must not live in Texas or you would realize some things about Jerry Jones. When was the last time Dallas won a superbowl, a PLAYOFF GAME?? The Cowboys fans are loyal to THE COWBOYS! Jerry Jones runs a model franchise……..spare me! he fired Tom Landry at a golf tournament and the cowboys fans (most of them) forgave him for that. He owns the Dallas area with an Iron fist. And texas stadium in falling apart. They had no choice but to build a new one. And he used San Antonio as leverage, he threatened to move the Cowboys. Thats why he held training camps in SA and Austin in the past. The Dallas Cowboys make a ton of cash becuase they have the entire state of Texas all to themselves (don’t even start up about the Texans). JJ IS a mafia don. Move all of the other teams out of California and see how much $$ the Raiders would make. C’mon man compare Al to anyone but JJ.

BREAKING NEWS: It has been reported that Scottish shipping magnate Jack Hoff has made a generous offer to by the Choakland Faders from owner Al Davis. Sources say that Davis was compliplating the trade until it was learned that the shipping magnate wanted to move the team to Edinburgh and transform them into a soccer team. Lawyers for the fader owner report that there was no way he was going to let anyone turn his little fairies into “grass fairies.”
October 1st, 2008 at 7:53 am
To all the Raider fans who have had enough and are going to support another team, face reality. You can’t. The only football fans that are as diehard as Raider fans are probably Steeler fans. Sure, go root for Tennesee or N.O., whoever, but when you start watching your “new” team, you know one eye will be fixed on the score ticker wondering what the Raiders are doing regardless if they’re playing or not.
Being a Raider fan since ‘75, I’ve seen the good times and the bad. The last 5 years are the worst. Then I think about what it’s like to be a Lion/Falcon/Brown/Cardinal/Bill/Charger/Eagle/Viking/Seahawk/Titan/Panther/Saint/Bengals fan for 33 years not ever getting to say your team is the Super Bowl champ much less being in one. Then I think about some of the supposed “best teams” right now such as the Pats/Colts/Cowboys/Giants and remember that these teams were an armpit of a franchise for decades. (well I guess you can’t say that about the Cowboys)
My point boils down to this. Don’t give up on the Raiders because of 5 years of futility, or that the owner is too old blah, blah, blah. Don’t waste your time. Where are you going to go? SD or Denver or the next team Kiffin is a part of? I didn’t think so.

What happened to the keep kiffin site?
October 1st, 2008 at 8:00 am
Whats most disappointing is the team could be 3-1 if Kiffin converts about five more first downs. Kiffin has been trying to throw Davis under the bus for months now but Davis had been driving the bus towards Kiffin all along. The Raiders look better at 1-3 this year than any of the past five seasons inspite of Kiffin. Now with the distraction gone they can keep them moving in the right direction. You guys wanted continuity, well you got it, at least for the remainder of this season and maybe beyond that. A little side note worth mentioning is that Knapp turned down the offer to be head coach so he could keep developing Russell and call the plays once he found out Cable was being considered. Kiffin had them shifty eyes on ESPN like a nervous kid that had manipulated the situation to his own advantage and got caught. He should have quit and left for Arkansas when he got offered the job instead of trying to rip off the Raiders. Petrino quit without pay when he took the job Kiffin wanted.

Such an irresponsible liar. That crusty loser expects me to believe him when he spends 30 seconds assuming responsibility for the failure and spends an entire hour throwing his former coach under the bus? What a pathetic idiot.

So for the past 7 months, I had definately been in Kiffin’s corner. I like most, believed Al had gone completely senile. After watching yesterday’s presser and reading all the off-air quotes, I must admit, he’s not completely senile. He still needs to step back from running the football operations which made his “local” executive comments intriguing….
I’d be interested in others specualation / guesses on who he has in mind….the only person I can think of is Madden, which I just don’t think would be a good idea….
October 1st, 2008 at 8:09 am
And that letter is as desperate and classless as you can get as a human being. What a miserable piece of crap Al has become. His stupid paranoia is as transparent as ever. The best thing that can happen to the Raiders is if this loser disappears from the face of the earth.

I think Al was right on the mark with Kiffin and it showed even to the extent of a witness or three. I knew there was going to be trouble when I first read about Kiffin traveling to meet with Gruden on summer breaks, I wonder if Al knew about that before or after he hired the kid. Davis has been rumored to be probing the coaches on contract extension beyond this season, Knapp was mentioned as one he has approached for sure and now Cable getting his chance as head coach is another very good sign. At least it was not Rob Ryan, then it would have been highly likely Cable and Knapp would want out the door after this season, but I doubt that now. Love or hate Davis, he had to make a decision on Kiffin and it was the right move.

I’ve bled silver and black since ‘67. We used to be the greatest second half team in all of sports. I have personally witnessed three second half comebacks from 24-0 against San Diego, Denver and New Orleans. This current version (since ‘03) of the Raiders is the worst second half team in the history of the NFL. Just watch a tape of last Sun. against the Chargers! The players went crying to AD in ‘89 because Shanahan was too much of a “disciplinarian” (even H. Long) and got him fired. AD has a history of babying and protecting the players from “tough” coaches. That is the main reason why this team is known everywhere as the “Faders” today. AD will not let anyone get tough enough with the team to get them into physical shape where they can play in the second half with the same intensity as the first half. We will continue to lose until this is addressed.
October 1st, 2008 at 8:54 am
I guess this means J-Marc will be vertically launching all day to Johnnie Lee and Lelie, and Javon if he can get down the field; per Al’s orders to Cable. I thought it was a bit low for Al to reveal that Kif didn’t want J-Marc, that should be kept between them…but hey everyone has differing opinions on who to select and hopefully J-Marc won’t hold it against Kif. I personally so wish we Calvin Johnson! but J-Marc will mature and be good.

The odds on Kiffin now going on to win a Super Bowl just went from 27:1 and are now at 4:1.
The only positive thing to come out this entire embarrassing situation is that I finally get to see how bad Al Davis looks.
Sing it with me Al!
“And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.

Ill state my case, of which Im certain.

And more, much more than this,

October 1st, 2008 at 9:10 am
Just saw clips of the news conference and had a good laugh. So this franchise has finally crashed to new depth. The most hilarious moment was when a reporter asked Cable to comment on players who seem to really like Kiffin. Davis, in a moment of weakness, challenged the reporter and actually said, “…they love the owner too…”. My goodness! It sounded like an elementary school-yard arguments between six year olds. THis was so pathetic that it completely destroyed all the earlier more lucid Davis-moments in the conference.
I do like Cable for his stance with Kiffin. He called Kiffin a friend right off the bat and said he loves the guy and that Kiffin worked hard. It is clear that Cable is his own man and has no fear of walking away at the end of this season. It is clear that Cable is setting himself up for the next job elsewhere as soon as this season ends. There is no a** kissing.
There is no sense of warm bonds between Cable and Davis, only a sense of respect from employee to employer. Davis showed little friendliness, more like a cold boss. Looks like there will be a new head coach come next year. The “Cable Departure Watch” has begun.
Someone posted earlier that this team was once the greatest come-back team in football and I am happy to have witnessed those fantastic moments. I will always remember the Snake, the Ghost, and the grand old days of Tuz and Lyle and crazy Madden and later, the calm Flores and Plunkett and Howie and Brown and Christensen and later Gannon. Now, this team proves the motto of “Fourth Quarter Fade” every Sunday. Teams know they just need to stay close because the Faders always finds a way to lose.
Hopefully, Cable can change that.
The players have changed, the business has changed but Davis has not adapted and has not evolved. Sadly, this sport business known as Raiders will languish for as long as he continues to run it as in the past.
There was a team known as the Oakland Raiders once and they were good.

It’s one thing to know when you become the head coach of the Radiers, that you already know the Al Davis way-my way or the highway mentality- having knowing that you hope that he will let you be able to bring in your own coaches and see if your way works or not. It’s sad when you don’t get what you want as a coach and are forced to make do with the coaches that you didn’t hire, players who you did not ask for but are on this team anyway because the owner wants them. I think part of the reason why the radiers were so successful was because the coaches of the past like Madden, Flores, Grudden was because they commanded their players respect but at the same time he gave them the flexability to still be themselves, have fun and enjoy football. The radiers are going to continue to keep going backwards until the owner dies. Then when new ownership comes in and is about the radiers solgan-commitment to excellence-the radiers will rise from the ashes and be a great team. What the owner has done has turn this team’s slogan-to a commitment of chaos. Only coach who could coach this team now is charles manson-baring the fact that he doesn’t put any engrave crosses on people foreheads. I believe that Lane is going to bounce back from this and be a better person and he gets that opportunity to coach against the radiers- woe unto the radiers and the owner because he’ll have to endure the fact that all the things that he said the radiers have to be, the organization is a victim of-live by the sword, die by the sword.

Does anybody believe this “Dead Man Walking”? Al Davis has finally lost his last brain cell. Al Davis is an embarassment to the NFL and our community. Al makes it impossible to be a Raider fan, go ahead and move back to LA and be irrelevant there! Why doesn’t Al just stick a cardboard cutout of himself on the sideline and call the plays from the booth? The NFL needs to take action and force this senile old fool to sell the team to someone who has a friggin brain! The Raiders have become an embarassment not just to the NFL but to the entire sports world! Do us all a favor AL and DIE!

I bet Tom Cable wins at least 5 of the remaining 12 games and proves to be better than Kiffin already in a shorter length of time. Cable wins 5 of 12. Kiffin wins 5 of 20. Cable gets to hand pick an OL coach next season along with an entirely new defensive coaching staff (their contracts are up).. Cable consults Davis wih every personnel move and the 2 get along nicely. Just win baby!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 9:25 am
I am very puzzled by Davis’ comments that Kiffin never wanted Russell. It is well known that Kiffin, with Davis’ permission, tried to sign FA QB Jeff Garcia before the 2007 draft. The plan was to take Garcia, use the No1 pick on Calvin Johnson and then to pick up a young WCO-orientated QB in the 2nd or 3rd round – the obvious candidates being John Beck and Trent Edwards. Davis cannot claim that he wasn’t aware and supportive of this approach.
When Garcia chose Tampa, the strategy had to change and a franchise QB had to be taken in the 1st round. There were two candidates, JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. Davis clearly knew and approved of Quinn being a serious option. Quinn, by all accounts, made a huge impression during his pre-draft workout and really impressed Kiffin and Knapp.
In the end, the decision (presumably Davis’) was to take JaMarcus because of his higher upside. It is not unrealistic to think that Kiffin would have preferred Brady Quinn. Quinn was much more experienced, a proven leader and competitor and probably more immediately suited to the offense that Kiffin wanted to run. There is nothing wrong with a coach disagreeing with the owner/GM – it happens all the time.
For Davis to spin the ‘he never wanted Russell’ line is disgraceful. He knew and approved the draft strategy.
And Kiffin was right. He would have won quicker with Quinn. Davis made the final call and carries the final responsibility.
I suspect Kiffin’s agents and lawyers are preparing a point-by-point rebuttal of Davis’ accusaions. More later.

Man, just imagine what this team would look like right now if Kiffin got to run the show his way. We would have Done something similar to what the Browns did in getting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn, only we would have gotten Calvin Johnson and Quinn. And we would have Monte Kiffin as a DC with Kiffin as a young up and coming awsome offensive coach. ahhh, what could have been…too bad we have Al Davis as an owner. At least when his son takes over, he wont want to be inoloved in the football operations, so he will hire a real football guy, like one that isn’t senile and counterproductive. Lets just hope Al’s health isn’t as good as he thinks it is.

The Bronco’s got busted for circumventing the salary cap in 1997 & 1998, the 2 years that they won the Super Bowl. They “deferred” salaries up to $29 Million, which at the time constituted almost 1/3 of the salary cap. They were fined twice for over $900,000 and 2 draft picks.

It sucks that he will be in charge until he passes basically…he said it himself. Now the only way this franchise gets turned around completely is when he his son takes over…and even Davis said his son has no interest in football, just the business side of things.
So that means if Mark Davis inherits the team one of two things will most likely happen.
1. He cleans house and HIRES a GM and head of player personnel and hires a whole new scouting department and then they can make all the decisions.
2. He sells the team to someone who will make the necessary changes to get this organization and team back on track.

October 1st, 2008 at 10:03 am
I gotta admit. I have been just as hypercritical of Al Davis as everyone else. And, I still blame him for alott of the team’s problems. But, Kiffin isn’t some innocent babe in the woods. Regardless of how terrible it may be to work in Alameda, he broke a couple of the unwritten rules of football.
1) You don’t go public. (Well Documented)
2) You don’t bring it onto the field (See 76 yrd FG attempt)
He did both things. Many of us defended this guy, and now that the other shoe has dropped, it’s not as clear as it once was. It’s not all Evil Al anymore. Either way, I like Cable. He’s a positive guy, who has given us results. The O-line’s not perfect, but it’s much better than it was before we hired him. He gives me somthing to root for. And, if we can manage to get a win in NO after the bye, watch out. If that happens, all bets are off .
October 1st, 2008 at 10:04 am
Darkknight- dont forget the 94 49ers cheating as well…………..the NFL has always been corrupt just like most big busniness. Remember since the salary cap era the team that win the big game for the most part had owners who were on the NFL financing committee. The shhhhit is so doctored up and al knows that. That is why he does these games with people becuz he knows they will never let him win a title again. The Super Bowl was so BS and I’ll never believe the official bi polar nonsense
October 1st, 2008 at 10:05 am
Every time I want to blame the failure of the Raiders to win, I end up EVENTUALLY, reluctantly, blaming AL, especially when it comes to coaches. Yesterday ended all of that forever. I will never again question Davis.
Sure, Gruden coached us to a lot of wins. But I think that had more to do with Gannon. Just look at the Buccaneers. Are they relevant since 2003? They dissapeared after the COLTS came back on them on Monday Night Football. Super Bowl 37 doesn’t count in my mind, because the Tampa defense knew all of Gannon’s cadences. Period end.
Callahan called us the “Dumbest Team In America” on national television. What other professional would have done that?
Turner, Shell, Bugle, White: They didn’t win.
And what has Shanahan done without Elway concerning championships? I’ll tell you what…he got rid of Plummer, a quarterback that took them to 12-plus wins a year, and replaced him with a hothead who has a tendency to throw interceptions.
LANE KIFFIN SAID TO AL: “WE CAN’T WIN WITH THIS TEAM.” And that is all I would have needed to hear.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:05 am

I just have one question to all you Kiffin backers…
Let’s say the content of Al’s letter is incorrect, HOWEVER, Kiff did receive the letter. Then why did Kiff went on the record to say him and Al have not discussed the issue? Many folks have been blasting Al for sitting on the sideline of this thing. However, regardless whether the accusations in the letter were true or not, Al did send Kiff the letter. Therefore Kiff has been checkmated that he lied.
So Kiff’s was cornered by Trey Wingong from BSPN on the letter and he said he didnt want to get into it. THE MAN FLAT OUT CONNED THE PRESS AND YOU DUMMIES. HE WANTED TO BAIL ON YOU DURING HIS FIRST SEASON. HE NEVER DENIED HE WANTED TO BE IN ARKANSAS.

After sifting through yesterday’s wreckage there are a couple of things that are clear:
The relationship between Davis and Kiffin was destroyed and a change needed to be made.
In the end Kiffin new who the boss was when he took the job. Kiffin is the one that needed to go. I think Kiffin helped us but I wish he had demonstrated more maturity.
With the fifth head coach in six years and as poor a record as we have, the problem is lack of talent not poor coaching.
If we draft better, the talent problem lessens, good coaching starts to make a difference and winning starts to lessen the criticism of the Raiders.
Davis is the boss and yesterday he clearly shouldered his share of the blame. Other people in the Raiders organization provide significant input to Davis in preparation for the draft. Those people need to do a much better job.
I continue to support the Raiders but we must draft better to build this team. As Mr. Davis said, it was a regrettable day but let’s move forward and support Cable who imo was an excellent choice.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:19 am
Why does anyone think Kiff will win?
Reality is Al finally spoke up and his words were specific and damning of Kiff. Al did what had to be done Kiff fired back on BSPN with generalities.
Al was fantastic in my opinion, and answered all the questions.
Why didn’t you talk to Kiff? “We did speak after Buffalo game, in front of coaches.”Why did you wait so long? “He was young and I wanted it to work out/give him a chance..” What about badmouthing of players by Kiff: “Kiff had a hand in every signing except Gibril”. What about Jmac: “Kiff NEVER WANTED JMac!”
I felt sorry for Kiff, but not anymore. The only reason people liked him was b/c he popped off against Al. And rightly so, people blamed Al for our poor performance. I still fault Al for that, but Kiff should get $0 and he has done nothing to prove he’s a good coach.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:20 am
Kiff was so good that he pocketed those 2 timeouts so that he could use it in yesterday’s BSPN interview and today’s cancelled press conf.

Yes, and the Portland Trail Blazers could’ve drafted Michael Jordan. And the Warriors could’ve drafted Kobe.
When people bemoan past drafts of could’ve had CJ, could’ve had Thomas, could’ve had Quinn y’all sound like Coach Boy who just left the building. Complaining about what is not here rather than addressing what is.
I think the Raiders now have a best case scenario. Knapp will do fine calling plays. Robbo somehow has the D playing very well. Cable is a man the team can rally around. I expect inspired play, plus, to my knowledge, Knapp knows J Russ can be a fine quarterback.

Just my opinion though!

Right F’ing on. Kiff didn’t directly answer any questions about his lying. However, as Al pointed out, b/c he doesn’t talk to the press, most of these points never come up.
In Cable I trust.
Kiff fans are not Al fans, that’s clear given the animosity b/w Al and Kiff. Al created and owns the Raiders. Therefore, Kiff fans are not fans of the Raiders at this point.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:23 am
It’s not so much Kiffin, but the fact that Al’s had 5 coaches in 7 years and how many before that in the last twenty. Dude it’s about continuity, we are tired of this crap with Al, he’s the one that needs to go.

Al has done poorly as of late, no doubt. However, he created that Raiders and he’s not going anywhere.
What I find interesting is that so many people want Al to go yet still claim to be Raiders fans. Would you be happier if Elway used some of his illegally begotten salary, led a financial group to buy the team, changed the uniforms and they won?
October 1st, 2008 at 10:28 am

My comments about past drafts are intended to hopefully point out that the problem needs to be corrected.
As I said, with five coaches in six years and as poor a record as we have had lack of talent has to be the root cause of our problem.
Coaching only makes a difference when you have enough to work with. We are getting better but the talent must improve in the future if we are to get out of this mess.

Al Davis was the Raiders in the 60’s….70’s…..80’s….Since that time what has he done to better this team. Fire coaches every on average every 20 games is not going to improve any proffesional sports program, whether you are the so called “GOD” Al Davis or not. Those who think the Raiders would be nothing but a memory without Al Davis are poorly mistaken. I beleive that they would probably not be in Oakland if not for Al Davis but The NFL is not going to change the name and colors of one of its most popular franchises. I’m certain this team would move to a bigger market such as L.A., But Al Davis has already done that so what do we have to lose. This team we always exist in the NFL with Al Davis or not because the NFL makes a lot of money from them and the other 31 NFL franchises.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:39 am

CORRECTION……Al was the Raiders and who cares what he does to the media……I thought he didn’t want to win in the media, but on the field…..or was it in the courts……he is good at that…….he is also good at being a liar to the previous owners of the team when he forced himself into a positon of power………..he is also good at spoon feeding you this stuff because you don’t hear from him all of the time, so you have to believe it is true because the one time in 10 years that he has enough energy to speak, he throws basically the entire NFL under the bus…………

Darkknight,
So you don’t think that Quinn would have been better than McClown or Culpepper?
Longer-term, Russell might be better than Quinn. In terms of 2007 and 2008 (the length of Kiffin’s contract), Quinn was always going to be more ready.
Brien,
Of course Kiff wanted Calvin Johnson – but it depended on getting Garcia. Neither Kiffin or Davis wanted to handover the franchise to a prospect like Edwards or Beck so, if Garcia said no, they had to take either Russell or Quinn.
With hindsight, a draft with Calvin Johnson and Trent Edwards would be looking very smart now.

The pick was going to be CJ or Russell…taking Quinn #1 overall would have the for sure WRONG move!
Russell is going to be a better pro than Quinn….just as long as the old crazy man doesn’t screw up his development by bringing in coaches who wouldn’t know how to develop a QB if it hit them in the face. The offensive coaches they have right now are good coaches after the season is over….thats when things can get hairy again….ugh…
October 1st, 2008 at 10:52 am
The Raiders can beat the Saints. Even with all of this Al Davis manufactured B.S. The Raiders will have Fargas back and a healthy DMAC. Cable and Knapp won’t go to seven step drops because they know the roster as well as Kiffin.
Rob Ryan is on the hook now. He has no place to hide. He has TOTAL control of the defense and Nnamdi will be healthy. He is coaching for his future right now. Raiders defense should do okay with a healthy Warren, Burgess and Aso.

So even with that high pass to run ration from NO, you think we can hold them to 16 pts?
By the way, Nnamdi has a fracture,Burg has a tear and Warren the same, it takes more then 2 weeks to heal all of that.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:56 am
Can we address the Rob Ryan ’sacking’.
I believe Kiffin when he said that Rob Ryan approached him about whether he should or shouldn’t take up the offer from the Jets. Ryan has never denied this.
That means that Kiffin didn’t want to fire Ryan – as Davis is claiming. Kiffin merely agreed with Ryan that a fresh start was best for both parties.
In relation to DeAngelo Hall and Javon Walker. The issue is not whether we should have signed them and whether or not Kiffin supported the deal. The real problem is the price we paid for Hall and Walker. Hall was never worth giving up a high 2nd round pick for. Walker was never worth the ridiculous guaranteed money.
And all the financials were signed-off by Davis. He approved all the deals. He cannot excuse himself from responsibility.
If you leave aside all the emotions and all the bravado, Davis’ polemic is very suspect. I suspect that Kiffin’s advisers are going through Davis’ statement point-by-point, line-by-line. If, as I think probable, Davis has said things he cannot substantiate, then this is far, far from over. The Commissioner and the other 31 owners will take a very dim view of Al Davis if it is proven that he has willfully misrepresented the facts.

Cable and Knapp will not change any of the playbook or terminology, (thank god) but I think they will better play callers inside the red zone and will not be afraid to throw the ball more.
As long as they get consistent pressure on Brees, then our CB’s should be able to blanket there WR’s especially since they don’t have Colston.
Ryan needs to put T Howard as they spy for Bush.

Did you guys hear Kiff’s interview on ESPN. A few quick points.
1. He didnt directly deny any of Al’s accusations of him lying. He avoided the question and then he said that he didnt want to go into it.
2. He said he was embarassed for Al. Are you serious??? You need to be embarassed for yourself you frickin weisel.

If the commish and other owners think and have enough evidence that shows the old man mis represented the facts then the old man will pay Kiffin but can the commish try to punish the old man even more for that type of action??
Interesting….
October 1st, 2008 at 11:02 am
If that is true about the agents, than some players, or at least one player, is happy to see Kiffin gone and maybe they won’t blow 4th quarter leads. Glass half full right?

Dan, I have been a Raider fan a lot of years, I remember watching in the 70’s so do not give me what a Raider fan is or isn’t. I used to love him but he lost me with Gruden, he wanted to be right more then he wants to win and that’s just how I see it. I am not an owner fan, the Raiders were there before him and certainly will be there without him. Yes he did create the Raiders we love but that time hasn’t been there since the early 80’s

During the press conference Davis was asked about his new head coach. He turned and said, “Do you have the PR sheet on Cable cuz I don’t know much about him?”
TWERPING TRUTH
Your team is toast, Clown Nation.
Any thinking person recognizes that when a NFL franchise goes through 6 head coaches in 7 seasons it is ill to the core.
The Raider organization is a dog chasing its tail.

On KNBR they talked about a sick Silver and Black bracelet that AD had on. They said it said “Al” in diamonds.
Supposedly the bracelet was given to AD by Jimmy the Greek and it was passed down to him from Al Capone.
Classic.

Chaos – Lots of people called Al a liar. Even the reporters there yesterday…I am sure he has lied as well. No one ever doubted that.
However, the Raiders have always been a shady organization. You bitch and whine so much but you forget that you loved a team that has its reputation built on being a shady organization. Because we are not winning now, these fans are whining about Al. When we were winning 3 consec div title and going to the SB, were you whining then? That’s right all that is wrong is Al’s fault. Pathetic isn’t it on your logic.

glad kiff decided to shut up… I could not beleive he was going to go off in view of the legalities… Gets ugly when former staff get pitted against current and whoever else davis pays off.
Kiff is not a conman. He did not con davis who has some inteligence. He does’nt even know gramer. He’s just a good kid who wanted to win football games with his dad. Davis you are not loyal.. And deserve every loss you’ve found and will find. Shame on you!!!! Boycott of the first half!!!!!!!!!

Let’s not get revisionist on the draft. Russell was the right pick. We are building the offense with the QB. Russell has looked good so far and had the Managing General Partner got the contract done on time, Russell would be even better.
We are missing a WR. Hopefully, the managing general partner can go get us one before the trade deadline.
Of course that will have to wait until his meeting with the Commissioner

805, good point. Kiffin did say that he and Al discussed the Raiders 2007 draft options during his all-night interview. Kiffin told Davis what he wanted to do and what he felt was necessary – and Davis was so impressed that he hired him.
Al Davis is acquiring a very selective memory but the truth is much more interesting and damaging.
One question remains unanswered: Who picked John Bowie?
October 1st, 2008 at 11:14 am
I feel comfortable knowing that Mark and or Amy will be taking over the franchise once Mr. Davis “meets his maker”. Mark grew up in this team, and knows the legacy, the past, present and will determine the future. Amy is no “bimbo” as some have stated. She is a competent, and cunning business woman. She dosent need to know the Football side of the business, she will bring in people who do…

October 1st, 2008 at 11:14 am
I lost respect for Kiffin….He sounded like a spoiled little kid that didn’t get his way! He should have manned up and talked to Al regarding this letter that was sent to him via Fed Ex before the KC game. He should have scheduled a meeting with his boss and discuss the issues he had in that letter in person. Then, if they couldn’t have resolved those issues…then part ways and move on. This went on too long. But who’s fault was that? Kiffin’s… Al’s? One of these guys needed to step up…and we all know that Al Davis ego was not going to allow that. He’s the owner Kiffin, should have stepped up and approached his boss Al Davis. All this mess could have been avoided if Kiffin would have kept his trap closed during press conferences and talked to Al personally. They are on the same team.

2006 ATl: 2939 yards on 532 attempts = 5.5 per play
Second place that year was JAX: 2541 yards

Section 142, you can forget Amy Trask. According to reports on SFgate, she has fallen out of favour with Davis because she pressed for stability and was less critical of Kiffin.
The axis of evil inside Alameda are John Herrera and Mike Taylor. They are Davis’ closest advisors and the ones who led the attack on Kiffin.
Which puts Jerry McDonald in a difficult position – considering his friendship with Herrera.

It’s the front office that prohibts a normal working relationship in their rabid protection of Al. They sniff a hint of what they deem unloyal or independence and they all start leaking info. It’s really not a great situation for a hc who needs players respect up front and can’t get it because of the way things are run

I havd two big prolems with Kiff going back to last year.
I think he screwed my boy over and AW should have started over McCown and Pepper.
He misused the running backs last year and it looks like he was gonna do the same this year. Rhodes, Fargas and Lamont should have all seen some touches in every game instead of pounding Lamont untill he broke, pound Fargas untill he breaks.
Come to find out he really was upset over missing out on the Ark gig. I never wanted to believe that. I found it hard to believe a bright young man could screw himself when he had the chance to write his ticket to his next job.

NC-Chaos,
The Saints have a high pass ratio but I am not too worried. Our defense for the 1st 3 QTRs puts pressure on the QB and our secondary, when not playing 10 yds off, is pretty good. Plus, the Saints do not have Shockey or Colston.
The Saints are a little one-dimensional with the pass, as long as we are aggressive we should be okay.
My concern is this team’s capability to finish. They will play tough, but when they get to that 4th QTR and they have a 3 and out or give up a score, will the team continue to collapse

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—Patriots coach Bill Belichick is declining comment on a tampering accusation leveled against his team by Raiders owner Al Davis.
Belichick was asked Wednesday about Davis’ statement and said that the Patriots are concentrating on Sunday’s game against the 49ers in San Francisco. New England wide receiver Randy Moss also declined comment Wednesday.
Davis said Tuesday that the Patriots tampered with Moss before they obtained him from Oakland in a trade during last year’s NFL draft. Davis made the statement after a news conference in which he announced the firing of his coach, Lane Kiffin.
*******************************************************
Al Davis doesn’t know when to just shut up. This sounds like another lawsuit on the way. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person. Hope the Patriots fry his lame old a$$ – right after Kiffin wins his suit for breech of contract/wrongful termination. Al Davis is a paranoid old geezer who belongs in a home for old fuks who suffer from foot in mouth and/or head up a$$ syndrome. Time has passed you by Al, get over it.

I was wondering about Amy because Taylor is the lawyer handling things instead of her
October 1st, 2008 at 11:25 am
Chaos, that is actually NOT true. The Raiders run a very very unique organisation that is undeniable. But they do NOT run a shady business, with shady business dealings. That is why Davis has won practically ALL the suits he is ever in. He is almost always the plaintiff, and he almost always wins. One thing he does not tolerate at all is lying. He never has, and no one can come forward and say that Davis lied or put in writing something Davis did not do. Look at Shanahan. He could take him to court over the alleged money Davis owes him, but he would lose. Davis runs a pirate organisation for sure, but the quote is “to live outside the law, you must be honest.”
October 1st, 2008 at 11:26 am
I have a different opinion on Trask and Davis. he even referred to her yesterday in the Presser, he may l;eave something for her or even the team… Why would he make that comment based on your statement that she has fallen out of favour?
I know that John and Mike are the the current counsel. Thats not exactly a secret.
October 1st, 2008 at 11:26 am
Andrews Mom,
Stop…AW wasn’t the QB for the scheme. That’s why changing coaches so often hurts the team. The players don’t always match the scheme. AW did not match the offensive scheme that Kiffin and Knapp were implementing
AW can be successfull, just not here. At least not as a starter

October 1st, 2008 at 11:29 am
Andrews Mom, the one thing that has become completely obvious is Kiffin had no idea about personnel at this level. None. Every person he lauded sucked, the ones he didn’t could play. That people here wanted to give him authority over personnel shows what some of these posters know. MR I’m looking at you here.

He may not have been a system fit, but mcCown and DC were not the answer.
I think AW earned his shot and did not get it because Kiff wanted to prove something.
October 1st, 2008 at 11:35 am
Sounds to me Davis did this letter to set Lane up for yesterday. Al’s attorneys told him to put his differences in writing so it could be recorded when he mailed it. This will show AL’s intent to fire Lane weeks ago. Which we all new was coming.
Al mentioned in the letter that these were Kiffins signings other then Wilson. Notice all were Kiffins except for the guy who is actually working out? And if you go back and read the old blogs when these guys were signed Kiffin didn’t sound like a guy who got the shiny new toy he wanted. He pretty much gave Al all the credit.
Al lied his a$$ off in this letter and I hope he is exposed when this thing goes to court. Unfortunately it will probably be settled out of court and Kiffin will have a gag order with the settlement.
I’m not one of the AL bashers and I have some criticisms of Kiffin. But AL was way out of line on this and the fans are going to pay for it over the long run.
I hope the Cable is able chanters are right. But I don’t think you are.

Kiffin is gone. Trashing him is not productive anymore. Also, don’t forget that Cable and Knapp were brought in by Kiffin.

Let’s get one thing straight. We are all for the most part Raider fans except for the occasional troll. We are divided however in what is best for the Raiders in that we the “Al Bashers” think it’s time for him to move on that he’s lost his mojo and is now just prohibiting winning by his sheer existence. Yeah we get he is the owner, he is the Raiders (as if we’ve not been aware of that) and some of us have even watched games in their heyday, I remember when they interupted the Heidi game. I think the same thing is happening in the front office and Davis is just too weak in his age to battle it or encourage depending on who your listening to, to stop it.

Kiffin will get the last laugh out of last night’s press conference.
Davis was full of crap. He behaved no better than a three-year old kid putting out a trainload of tantrums.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Al said he has already been speaking with the man but, he wouldn’t get into it until the off season. It makes sense about Holmgen. He doesn’t want to coach anymore, and he wants to be closer to his family in the bay area. This would definelty give us stability in our management. I would pretty much assume he would want a new coach unless tom is as good with people as everyone seems to be saying.Head coaches don’t normally call plays like kiffen did.We just need a coach to hold the guys accountable and push them to be the best they can be.We need to get someone who al respects and who he will let make decisions help get some quality linemen and receivers in here and we would be back to the old days, kickin ass!!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Davis is not dumb. He has been in a lot of law suits and lost very few of them. His lawyers knew everything he was going to say before his press conference and you can bet he didn’t say anything he was vulnerable on. Kiffin will not get a dime. I feel bad for him for that, but all he had to do was shut up and coach the team and then at the end of the year the team would not of picked up his option and he would have been free to look for a new job, without the stigma of being someone who undermines their boss in public.

You know I was an Al Davis basher too, until I heard what he had to say. He was thinking the same thing I was thinking and have been thinking the past two weeks. Stop hand-cuffing the best arm in the league!! The guy can heave for 60yds. off his back foot!!!! At least try to air it out. And the waning seconds of the first half of the game against the Chargers was the perfect opportunity to do so. Instead we kicked a 75 yard field goal???? WTF? Let Russell do what he came here to do. If you are one of those Faux fans and you say we don’t have the recievers, look at Favre he threw six TD’s last week. And he did it with WORSE recivers than what we have with the exception of Cotchery. Favre just makes nobodies into viable threats. It can be done!! And from what I have seen Russell has the arm to do it. Kiffin, though I liked him, was too conservative for me. Throw the damn ball. See what the kid can do. And for God’s sake get McFadden more involved. He can do a lot of things. I surely hope we didn’t draft him to run between the tackles. We have backs for that. McFadden can offer another recieving threat if utilized correctly. Kiffin failed to do that. Hopefully Cable will realize that we CAN win right now!!! But McFadden’s role will have to change slightly to do it. Somehow I don’t think he would have a problem with that. You would think Kiffin(being an OC at USC) could have used McFadden similar to the way he used Reggie Bush in the Trojan offense but no. These are the things that can get us over the hump. I can’t be the only one who sees it…
