Letter from Davis to Kiffin

A copy of the following letter was displayed on an overhead projector as owner Al Davis outlined his reasons for firing coach Lane Kiffin. Davis said the letter was sent following the Denver game and served as evidence as communication between the two. Kiffin said the two had not talked since before the Broncos game.

Dear Lane:

Over the past months, you have made a number of public statements that were highly critical of, and designed to embarrass and discredit this organization, its players and its coaches. I left you alone during training camp in hopes that you would cease your immature and destructive campaign.

However, you continue to make public statements that are critical of the organization, its players as a whole as well as individual players. Such statements constitute conduct detrimental to the Raiders and I will no longer stand silently by while you continue to heart this organization.

Further, you rontract is quite clear that you work “subject to the direction and supervision of the General Partner’’ and that the General Partner has the “exclusive right to do all things, which in its sole discretion are necessary to maintain and improve the Club, the football organization and their activities.’’

I realized when I hired you that you were young and inexperienced and that there would be a learning process for you. Your mistakes on player personnel and coaches were overlooked based on our patience with you. But I never dreamt that you would be so untruthful in statements to the press as well as on so many other issues. Your actions are those of a coach looking to make excuses for not winning, rather than a coach focused on winning.

For example, with the exception of Gibril Wilson, you were involved in recruiting all free agents and determining salaries for them and you were explicit in your desire to sign Javon Walker and DeAngelo Hall amongst others. All were a must to sign in your eyes, Hall in particular, because he played for Greg Knapp in Atlanta and Knapp gave him high grades. Do not run from that now.

I do realize that you did not want to draft JaMarcus Russell. He is a great player. Get over it and coach this team on the field, that is what you were hired to do. We can win with this team!

In regards to your recent fabrications about the defense, during the final cuts you made every cut on offense and every cut on defense except for Wakefield on defense and Wand on offense. Further more, during the game Monday night Rob played your Cover 2 defense and we got killed on an approximately 50-yard touchdown pass and approximately 70-yard gain that led to a field goal.

You meet every week with the defensive coaches to go over both the past game and to get a general feel for what will happen during the week in practice. You have the ability and authority to provide your input during those meetings and the preparation fo the game plan. I do not have weekly meetings with Rob _ you do.

During the week no one has ever gold you what to do on either offense or defense. In addition, no one has ever told you during a game what to do on either offense or defense and you call every play on offense. During a game if you want to blitz more, all you have to do is let Rob know what blitz you want and he will do it.

Although you continue to use the media to express your dissatisfaction with others, no one has publicly pointed out to you that in 4 preseason games and one regular season game played this year, your offense has scored one first half touchdown. That put tremendous pressure on the defense.

I know hta tyou wanted to bring your father in to run the defense and that Monte told me he wanted to come here even though he is under contract to Tampa. However, I did not wan to tamper with another team. In any event that was over seven months ago. Do not also run from the defense and your responsibilities.

This letter constitutes notice that if you further violate any term of your contract, in any manner whatsoever, you will be terminated for cause. I trust that this will not occur.

  • I don’t think AD is passing the blame on FA´s, he simply pointed out that Kiffin was a part of the process.

Kiffin said so himself last week: “I talked a lot of these players into coming here at some point — obviously, money has a lot to do with that — in free agency over the last two years”.

DeAngelo Hall said: “It’s been cool. Kiffin was a big part of me coming out here. He was the middle man between Al Davis and my agent, definitely a move he wanted to make on this team.”

  • AO

    RaiderFan, you praise Al Davis?

  • Its not a matter of loving or supporting AL at this point, its a matter of being an Oakland Raiders fan. Who gives a fuk about Kiffy at this point. ITS OVER.

  • radraider

so what happens when Cable and Knapp reunite with Mora another new coach and system for Russell? see Alex Smith

  • Einstein,
I can’t be a fan if I do not want to rim AL’s senile azz like you? Go paint yourself and look like an idiot in the black hole, tool!

  • theherbstwind

Kiffin had this young team geared up for winning. I hope Cable can make an impact; however, after hearing Nhamdi state what we all could see from the style of play from the last three games, that the players were, indeed, behind Kiffin, I don’t see why the players would really give a sh*t any more. Way too much soap opera and not nearly enough football. The only positives out of all of this is that Cable seems to be highly respected amongst the O-Linemen and he does know his stuff… How this translates into “team” unity, only time will tell… We better march, convincingly, over The Saints or I’ve finally found a few free hours every week…

The Rams are abhorrent. That coach had to go… They won’t win a game this year; but they might have someone at the helm that will, at least, be around a few seasons. The Rams, in a sense, are getting ready for next season this season in Week Five. If Cable is unable to right the ship, he’s gone at the end of the year (to Seattle) and we’re right back to the same place we and the players know all too well… And we all know this place all too well.

Man… I just want to see some football and I’m tired of shellin’ out cash to Whiner fans…

  • alisgod

#427, you are absolutely correct. You can always look at someone’s eyes and see how they move. When they move is when they are thinking how to respond “correctly”. When you speak the truth, you dont have to think. YOu just look dead on.

The kitten wanted out last year. He couldnt careless about us. Yet all these yoyo’s are crying. Crying for who 5-15 and Mr. rejected by ARkansas and Minn.

  • I was really dissapointed to see Nnamdi look almost lost on the NFL Network, although it really seems like they are trying to make Cable seem like he is a good guy in the locker room…..Now I guess it is time to let the coordinators be coordinators and Tom Cable guide the way……I am truely lost right now, because I do not know about this guy to feel confident that our team will fall in line behind him, other then the fact that he might put some fear into them…..but we see where that got kiffin…….kind of a lose lose right now

  • How can ANY of us on this blog take you serious Voldemort for wishing Al Davis was dead?

That is just fugging juvenile. To wish someone was dead because YOU don’t agree how he is running the Raiders?

Jeez us man, take a step back and thing about what you are saying.

  • ShawnRaiders81

Now your getting just plain stupid.

    1) You use Marty S. early today and agree with him like he has a No spin view of the Raiders cause he loves this org.

    2) You say no coach will come here yet we just had one fired and then hired another WELL RESPECTED coach.

    3) Your contradict yourself with everything you say now you have to talk about my girl, can’t use the one brain cell so make it personal…..

  • 100 percent behind Al on this one…Raider Fans, don’t let the media make you mind up for you..
the old man spoke form the heart to me and sounded like he was speaking the absolute turth..not saying I didn’t like Kiffin, but he gave off the spoiled, arrogant vibe from the jump..I think a lot of us just really wanted to like him, but deep down we know he wasn’t Raider material…
Al made the right call, and all you people who want to sell tickets to the games and want out (SPINELESS) email me, I want your tix….

  • Raider Dell

Let me answer your question the way I saw him speak today.

I know speaking well doesn’t mean success, your actions and your record will determine how good of a coach you are.

My comparison is not to be as a look a like only the personality he has.

He looks and sounds like a young Bill Parcells during his NY Giants tenure.

Strong personality, gruff, matter of fact and gets yourattention right away.

Will he win, let’s see what happens.

I like the personality traits, that’s a start.

  • Shawny,
I am sure your girl looks like she has been hit with a bag of nickels, because Ugly chicks end up with morons. Also Marty was right. get past your hate, because we are a laughing stock of a franchise. I am not in denial. When Al is dead things will get better.

  • Raiderside951

  • Nnamdi looked lost..lol
understand they are in the media, on a national stage, and unlike Lane, Nnamdi realizes that some things have to stay in house.you probably think the U.S will be better off with Sarah Palin, right?

  • ShawnRaiders81

Dumb people on this blog start insulting when they know they are over matched.

    Check mate.

  • Cable is not a respected HC candidate, see Idaho 2000-2003.

  • Dakota

Al mentioned something about Amy Trask ending up with a part of the team along with Mark Davis.

I wonder how Carol and Mark feel about that?

  • K-Rock

Those asking for links to the Kiffin response…

I have not seen it on the net. It is on ESPN News every 15 freakin minutes though.

  • alisgod

#438, Richard you are so naive. In the state of California, you have to have given warning and before you fire them. Al can’t run to the press with this letter unless he gives Kitten time to adjust to his warnings. That is HR 101. Al didnt want to pay the kid so he needed cause to fire that punk and legally not pay him.

Don’t be so naive man. Al, the schemer, was working with his attorneys to make sure they cross their T’s and dot their I’s before they can LEGALLY not pay him.

  • snake

post 448 rager…..gruden wanted out, he had enough and wanted to be near his older ailing parents in florida….and I was a huge chuckey fan….al blew it by not locking him long term before it became apperent he was the bomb, and gruden used his leverage wisely by saying it would be his last year. no twist there…the trade actually seemed like one hell of a deal untill chuckey killed us in the sb lol

  • Raider Fan……….Why do you believe him so much? What has he ever done for you to give him a hall pass? I think some of what he said today might have been true, but the smear campaign was the most rediulous thing he could have done. Here he is in front of the WORLD calling Kiffin out, and its ok? Yet Kiffin cant call him out, cause he is being young and juvenile? Just because you have notes documenting things you objectively see as being insubordinate, does not mean that Kiffin does not have things that the tyrant did or said that he will not use against him.

Here is the thing, take the high road and done talk down on him. He could have done that, but he decided to play on the same playing field as Kiffin and it shows that he has lost that touch with who he was. He is a ghost of his past!

  • Dakota

Nnamdi said guys (players) respected Lane because they know his number one goal was to change things and change the losing.

    Nuff said for me.

  • That is why you attacked me first. You are the quintessential Raider Fan that gives us all a bad name. Myopic blindly loyal imbeciles like you still believe AL is on the cutting edge of pro football. How bad does it have to get until you quit shooting tongue darts up AL’s AZZ.

  • “A laughingstock of a franchise”..
the most cliched term used in sports..
so I guess all those Jets, Bengals, Lions, Chiefs and Cardinals teams from the ’80’s up till now are wayy ahead of the game, right..?
A lot of media members have favorite sports teams as well, and honestly they love to hate the Raiders because their teams could never beat them…

  • I can’t stand Shannarat but Al Davis ripped him off for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, this letter, IMO is just a precursor to a multimillion ripoff of Kiffen. I am not taking sides because I questioned some of Kiffen’s moves but Al is being a slimy businessman with this letter. And to think, Kiffen is aobut to have his third child. Who is gonna feed those kids? It was supposed to be Al! Al is getting what he deserves. Imagine if he let Shannahan develop the raiders they way he developed the Broncos teams. Imagine that.

  • ShawnRaiders81

man not even sure why I am wasting my time.

Cable is looked at as one of THEE best o-line coaches in the NFL, so go to sleep give it a rest come back tomorrow, think of some more insults and try to act smart for the sake of us all.

  • Raider Dell

You should be happy Trask will be a co-owner. Maybe she will move the team to your neck of the woods.

The stadium deals here may go nowhere.

How does the SOUTH DAKOTA RAIDERS sound.

  • buster

462,I,as a season ticket holder ,will join with you ,ideas?Anyone who goes home crying, get over it,raider nation will kick ass!

Yeah, Al “looked” straight ahead into the eyes of those in the room? Hell, he didn’t even know who was in the room! Kif could have been in row 1 and Alice would have taken a media question from him. The game and living life has past the dumbass up! Al, you’re as pathetic as your shoulder pads (quote from “the Snake’) in your jackets and the walker you’re shuffling around with!

  • If Kiffin wanted to be here he would have just shut up and coached the team, and then been re-evaluated at the end of the season.

  • Spider

Hellllllllo Laaaaaaadies! I see the circle jerk is still going on. Choakland is a combination of the View, Peyton Place and the Jerry Springer show. I can’t believe that some of you girlz are buying into greazy al’s propaganda. But then it’s been known throughout the land that the fadersz are nothing but a bunch of sheeple. Up until the 80’s I can see why some of you sheeple might have bought into slime ball’s BS but good gawd sheeple it’s a new millenium and time to let go of the past. I have to admit I was shocked to see that greaze ball could still talk. Last time I saw him on MNF his lap rag couldn’t hold the drool coming out of his mouth. Someone must have given the old coot an adreneline shot or someone is a fantastic puppet master. Think it was Cable pulling the strings? To those of you who realize that slime ball is the problem with the fader nashun, my hat goes off to you. For those of you that think syph face is still king let me know what funny farm they send you to and I’ll send you highlight reels of the faderz next win in the year 2020.

    Go jump on Martys bandwagon.

Rapid City Raiders has a ring to it.

  • I believe Al, someone who has a lot more NFL experience and is a Hall of Famer, rather than some college QB coach who couldn’t get the “O” down the field enuff with his conservative azz playcalling…
AND MEMO to you Gruden fans…
same thing..Al basically told Gruden to stop “dinking and dunking” down the field and attack thsoe guys…you have Tim Brown and Jerry Rice and the league’s No. 1 rushing attack..attack and blow their azz out..!
But Gruden wanted to dink and dunk and play the time of possession game

  • Rager

You know what Snake, I forgot the whole thing with his brother, my bad. Either way, there are still a lot of decisions Al has made that were not good and he’ll try and cover his @ss. I’m just so sick of the constant drama that seems to revolve around here. I’m not sold on Cable as HC material, but I think he’s one helluva OL coach (think Norv Turner characteristics). Anyhow, thanks for the refresher on the Gruden saga, that reminds me of why I hated Chucky lol

  • Chrisco

Kiffin wasn’t a great coach, closer to average….but he did make some changes for the good and had a chance to be a good coach.

You poor souls who fall for the same old trick from Al Davis…White, Bugel, Gruden, Turner, Callaghan, Shell, Kiffin…excitement now that things would turn around after each one was hired after the last “loser” was fired, about how the winning would start….now cable, what a joke.

Meanwhile teams with the same coaches that have been in place for years go on to win superbowls…

  • Shawny,
You waste your time, because you have no life. I am sure you caught wood when Al was pontificating about the great players he signed and his desire to win. You are too ignorant to see that the Raiders are a punch line, because of Grandpa Al. As long as Al can sift through the White Trash pile and find fans like you then then he will believe that 20-65 is not really happening.

  • snake

lol@ all the haters wanting al to die soon read post 396…..Al states, I get cked 4 times a year, im great lol
nite all fking crazy day, one thing for sure davis cant hold a hour long press conference fulla lies, the media hates his azz…and respect it, thats why they all steer wide. he had his case made for him…kiffin got screwed day one with no owner support, then wanted out…loyalty always #1 with the tyrant lol

Go to sleep, we are all board with you.

  • I mean, look at the Chargers..what have they really won?
Their fans come into OUR blog because of the beatings they took from our great franchise over the years, and they get a few wins in a row against us and crow about it. Seriously, when as Raider fans have we ever felt so “fired up” about a Chargers win, no matter how many in a row?
no real point in the current discussion, I just wanted to say this…

  • Shawny,
I like to be insulted in proper English. Did you get grammar in the special ed. trailer? You probably rode the short bus with a Raider Helmet and a drool catcher.

    RaiderFan, you praise Al Davis?

I praise Al Davis when praise is due and I bash him when that’s deserved too.

Al deserves alot of criticism. He was the one that hired Kiffin. He has to be held accountable for all the horrendous personnel decisions. I blame Al for drafting stiffs like Gallery and Grove and not assembling an offensive line that can pass protect. I blame Al for every wasted draft pick and poor free agent signing. The Raiders have sucked for the past 5 years and no one deserves the blame more than Al Davis.

That being said, I’m from the old school. I remember when the Raiders were great and a Superbowl contender every year. I remember when the Raiders were mavericks that made the mantra ‘Just win, baby’, a reality and when there really was a silver and black mystique.

And I know Al Davis was the driving force behind all those years of excellence.

For that reason alone, I will never throw Mr. Davis under the bus. That’s called Raider Pride and loyalty.

Lame Quiffin was an idiot. His clock management alone proved that. Why anyone is upset that he’s gone is beyond me.

Criticize Davis all you want. He deserves the heat for the current sorry state of the Raiders. But don’t insult the intelligence of realistic Raider fans by crying about Lame Kiffin’s departure. Kiffin was a joke.

  • Ouestion for “CHRISCO”..
How many SuperBowls did Belicheck win in Cleveland…?
You need good players and a good coach to win..
just like it was mentioned earlier, what team without any stars or mediocre players ever won the Superbowl?
