No sign of Burgess

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, November 13th, 2008 at 1:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive end Derrick Burgess, fresh off his first practice since Oct. 6, was not with the defensive line Thursday as the Raiders concluded warmups and drills and were about to begin team sessions.

Burgess has missed five games with a torn right triceps.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell and running back Darren McFadden were both on the field after being limited Tuesday. Backup quarterback Andrew Walter was suited up after sitting out the previous day.

Center Jake Grove was not on the field, while linebacker Ricky Brown was present but did not appear to be practicing.

Justin Miller, the cornerback and return specialist claimed off waivers from the New York Jets, was fielding kickoffs during special teams practice, as was Hiram Eugene.

More to come later . . .

Burgess probably doesn’t want to play anyway. We already know Wilson doesn’t.

I think Miami will play us tough, they’re a much better team with something to prove considering we beat them last season.

Any team will play us tough. Our offense is worse than the B&B breakfast from Tom Walsh.

With Cable and Knapp out at season’s end who do you envision the Raiders begging to be HC? Rathman? I hope not.

    draft tim tebow
    ==========================================
Tim Tebow plays the same type of “Street Ball” that the SEC and Big 12 play. When I say street ball I mean the equivalent of what the “And 1 Mixed Tape Tour” is to the NBA. ON AVERAGE the better QBs come from undermanned programs in the BCS, or non-BCS. I am increasingly becoming convinced of this.

This is why Russell is struggling. Years of playing “street ball” at LSU is lengthening his adjustment time. I think players that come from lesser programs, without gimmick playbooks, have smaller margin for error and that helps their overall game.

No thanks to Tim Tebow, Pat Herrel, Colt McCoy or that guy in Missourah. Saying their names is like saying you want “Hot Sauce” to man the point for the Lakers!

Tom Walsh? Gosh I miss that guy.

  11. Stop the Ignorance Says:

I truly have no idea. Our options are definitely limited, though. Kiffin was what, the 229th choice? Not sure who wants to coach here anymore. This organization sh1ts down the throats of it’s coaches.

Davis should just coach it himself. Get him down there on the sideline in a hovaround.

Exactly. Can you imagine what the locker room environment is like? Probably like a morgue. Either that or it’s one big party since all the players know they’re getting paid their millions for just showing up.

Under former coach Lane Kiffin, the Raiders outscored opponents 30-24 in the first half, but they had trouble closing out games. Under Cable, the Raiders get off to horrible starts and can’t recover.”

I consider Vanderbilt to be an undermanned program. Cutler had little to work with as far as talent at Vandy compared to what Tebow, and Russell, had at Florida and LSU respectively.

LOL – True. As punishment, he should be forced to coach this team, then get fired 1 year into it, before he can even see his system/coaching begin to take shape. ‘How do you like it Al? Why didn’t you take this team to the SuperBowl in 1 year?’

    ______________________________________________________

S&B – Thanks, but the promoters don’t want to be bothered with facts. Since Cable has taken over, it’s been ugly, no doubt. But they don’t care. Who cares that the offense under Cable is 80 yards per game worse than Kiffin’s (with the same players) and 20 yards per game worse then Tom Walsh? Who cares that this team now gets outplayed from the starting whistle. They sure don’t. It’s all Kiffin’s fault. He ruined it for everyone by being brutally honest in the media. Blame him.

    Keep on keepin’ on, Al!

  31. S&B - Nation Collective Says:

It was a Fumble & Koolkell,

Eli Manning went to Ole Miss. Again, another undermanned program. Peyton Manning is the exception and not the rule. Name me all the QBs in the NFL that come from Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Miami, LSU, Alabama, Texas Tech, Texas, Missourah, Texas A&M et. al.

I stand by my statement. Top tier BCS conference teams rarely produce starting QBs in the NFL. The reason? They play “street ball” which has limited application in the NFL. Pat Harrell and Tim Tebow will find out real soon. Russell is struggling right now because of it.

BTW, I think Russell will develop into a fine QB. He does have the tools and temperment to be an NFL QB. Namely he is a pass first QB.

LMN-you forget Sea Bass’s value on kick-offs,probably because he only has to do it at most a couple times a day.also,if he didn’t have to constantly attempt 55-76 yard FGs he would be known as one of the best.but if you don’t like the guy no matter what he does he’ll never make you happy.
    ______________________________________________________

well why not let Lechler handling kick off, as I remember there isn’t a rule saying kickoff should be handled by a kicker..

only under kiffin was he asked to kick the long ones, problem is, Seabass missed to many inside 45 during his career… but if love the guy, no matter how bad he is you will always defend him..
only in raiders eyes is seabass good, in all others he is below mediocre.. and the highest paid..

    ==================================================
True they played and were wildly successfull. Just so long ago. But point well taken. I also think that this was pre-street ball era. Just my opinion though.

I think the SEC and Big 12 play a brand of football today that relies on have vastly superior players and developing plays that expressly accentuate that advantage. The result is an extermely high margin for error for QBs in these systems.

If I were talking to a kid aspiring to play in the NFL that’s in high school. I would tell him to avoid the Florida’s and LSU’s and aim for a Big East school or an undermanned BCS program running a pro-style offense.

first.. many of the announcers is pro-raiders.. and there isn’t many positive things to talk about, so they accidental upgrade Seabass performances just so they have some upside thing to talk about.. fact is he is not great, if you look at History’s top 15 kickers he is way below their avg.. if you look at the top 10 playing Kickers, he isn’t among them.. he is just above avg.. and he is the highest paid kicker (afair)

    ===================================================
First, thank you for reaching out to Al, I hope your conversations with him went beyond normal happy talk. Our problem here is that Al Davis does not treat his coaches with respect and dignity. As a result no qualified coach will come here. In addition, Al Davis refuses to implement a basic management structure that would allow the team to be competitive. He’s trying to do everything himself.

While the Lions struggle, they believe in a GM and are implementing the required changes. They just hired the wrong guy.

The Bengals are run by a strong owner. However, said owner gives his coaches more than 18 months to turn things around.

Because of those nuances, the Bengals and Lions don’t require your immediate attention.

Also, the press conference was an embarrassment to the league. Since you are already knee deep with the Kiffin & Davis rowe, I am sure that in your due-diligence you seeing the dysfunction that is preventing the Raiders from being competitive.

Please get involved. If you can take time out for Brett Favre, Pacman Jones etc…you can get involved in a franchise that the entire nation, outside of Raider Nation, believes is beyond repair.

Request that he hires a GM or credible alternative. Request that he maintains his next coaching hire beyond 18 months. Make sure the next coaching contract is reviewed by you personally. Have a sitdown with Al and the new coach and explain the basics of Coach / Owner relations.

The Raider Nation is held hostage. Aren’t the fans the customer of this league.

Thanks Commissioner.. And please let me know when you get to Oakland

    ==========================================

Blame him.

An NFL.com report said fired Raiders coach Lane Kiffin played an instrumental role in waived cornerback DeAngelo Hall signing with Washington on Friday. Redskins executive Vinny Cerrato called Kiffin for a scouting report on Hall, the report said. Kiffin endorsed Hall, in part because he had been humbled by his brief Oakland experience.

LMN-no problem.good discussion without name calling=).personally,i don’t pay too much attention to what the players make-i’m not paying their salaries(thank god).i think they are all way overpaid but there isn’t anything i or any of us fans can do about it .
    ______________________________________________________

Lefty.. namecalling will very seldom come from this alias, thats for sure!

regarding salary, nah i don’t care about their pay either, but its good as a referencepoint when you compare players.. if a player with more success is paid less than one we have, then thats a very good reference point to either re-do the contract or cut’em and find another and better

    AlisGod,

I am not saying that Kiffin was the answer. Although his performance was better than Cable’s thusfar.

I just want a coach to hang in there for more than 18 months. this is ridiculous.

Russell has already had 2 head coaches and THREE playcallers.

We can’t win with this chaos. Not now not ever until this coaching carousel changes.

Kiffin had 9 months to put together a team to start the season. He got rolled 41-14 scoring the 14 after Denver was boarding the team bus for their ride home. Cable had 9 DAYS to pull his team together, and needless to say, there was going to be major dissention. That is being cleared up. This hopefully will be a game that shows the team going in the right direction. Hopefully.

if Monte had been DC and we had had a Cover2 Defense, then Hall would be a good signing..

  98. Dead Head Davis Says:

Yeah, for Christ sake Kiffin was 5-20, NFL teams are drooling to use his offense. Not! Welcome to another rebuilding process Lane, just like you had with the Raiders, only you got demoted back to college. Now you can pick one of the bottom feeders to rebuild your reputation.

  99. KoolKell Says:

I think many of the newer Raider fans are as dysfuntional as the Raiders are. They don’t know any different.

  103. AlisGod (go Warriors go Sharks) Says:

Nation…I think you’re actually a pretty good blogger. However, all these yoyo’s kitten backers just can never seem to accept that perhaps he was not all he worked out to be. I get real pissed when I see national media write stuff about the Raiders with ZERO actual knowledge or analysis of the stats. Look at the site like profootballtalk…they usually quote articles from the local guys.

Kitten said he was not involved in the D. All those games we were competitive in was a direct result of the D and spec team. Our offense either under Kitten or Cable has yet to do crap. That’s calling it like it is. and Yeah Hall was a tampa 2 guy and Kitten wanted him here. yet kitten backers are in denial with the thought that perhaps kitten wanted Hall here in the first place. Al was stupid enough to sign the check.

  104. The Commissioner Says:

    Wow S&B,

I can really say with all honesty that you are a true fan of the game and for that I thnk you. Let me touch on a few of your topics as I have some meetings planned here this afternoon and must get away:

First of all, Mr. Davis has outright control of his team. He is allowed to make all of the necessary changes to his organization as required to get his team to a successful level. Whether or not that means firing his coach or making other personell decisions, is completely up to him as long as he does it in a meaningful and tasteful respect. The conference he had was simply My. Davis’ way of indicating to the public his take on his situation, which in fact he is not required to do.

Secondly you bring up some of the recent issues we have had as a league regarding players and their misconduct. These players understand that they play for the best organization in professional sports. We have created a legacy that will be remembered for decades and generations to come. What the players must understand is that it is a privilage to play in this league, as only a few have the potential to do. We have to enforce the rules of misconduct as sternly as possible to mitigate and future potential of ruining the legacy that has been established.

Regarding the other teams in the league, with the exception of the Detroit Lions, who I feel are working very hard at continuing to create a positive environment, the other teams are competing year in and year out. As you have noticed, even with the team you currently follow, there have been a higher then normal number of injuries that have decimated organizations. With the high number of injuries, a team has to try to compete with the other organizations that may not have had the same defencies as normal, and compete at a high level.

We do our best to police the issues that are necessary and urgent, and at this time, the Oakland Raider Organization, although in shambles will continue to work towards the greatness that they can acheive. It may take some time and effort, but the Organization and its fan base will survive.

  105. It Was a Fumble Says:

If Jamarcus gets ANY time to throw he is a very accurate passer.

  106. Dead Head Davis Says:

Walsh and Johnson didn’t sell out the owner when things didn’t work in their favor.

  107. Dead Head Davis Says:

Commish this team won’t be in Oakland after the current lease expires in two years. You point is invalid.

  108. KoolKell Says:

The Raiders were 2-14 and dysfunctional when Kiffin got here, what’s the point?

  109. Al Davis INC Says:

  112. Levi Says:

Uh! I have already prepped my crying towel for Sunday. McFadden needs to wear his old adidas form collage and just cover the logo with tape and draw a swoosh on it and maybe we can get little explosion out of our offense. And just maybe Rob Ryans prevent defense on every third down can be done away with so we get the defense off the field for a rest here and there and maybe develope some kind of rythem on offense, Oh wait we have an o lineman calling the plays. Thanks AL!!!!!
