Hall, Walker costly against ‘09 cap
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 14th, 2008 at 11:41 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders are not only out $20 million in actual dollars for the 16 games played by DeAngelo Hall and Javon Walker, but will also see both players take up a good chunk of salary cap space in 2009.
With Hall having been waived, the Raiders will have $5.833,334 in “dead money” under the 2009 cap, according to league figures.
Walker, who underwent surgery Friday to have two screws interseted in his ankle, might end up sticking around for at least another year simply to avoid the bonus acceleration that would come with his release.
According to the wording of his contract, “Club agrees that it will pay Player the Roster Bonus despite the fact that, Player, due to an injury suffered while practicing or playing with Club in the immediate prior contract year.”
That essentially guarantees the Raiders will have to pay a $5 million bonus, unless they want to argue that Walker has completely recovered from surgery and is healthy. That road could be perilous. Players for the most part don’t care if Al Davis occasionally battles with coaches over money.
But after the Hall contract dump, if the Raiders were to attempt to skirt an injury guarantee, Davis’ reputation as a player’s owner would take a huge hit.
There is already some grumbling among agents that they will attempt to convince their clients not to go to Oakland. The same grumbling existed last year, and it didn’t matter because the Raiders were throwing money around and both players and agents were only to glad to take it in the form of bonuses and commissions.
The landscape could change if the perception of dysfunction carries over to the matter of actual dollars in the pockets of the players.
Assuming the Raiders pay the $5 millon bonus and make good on the injury guarantee, Walker’s salary cap figure will be $10,833,333, including $4 million in salary.
Should Oakland pay the guarantee as stipulated and then cut Walker, the 2009 cap charge $14,166,667 to terminate the relationship. Combined with the Hall dead money, that’s $20 million in dead money.
The Raiders could also attempt to get Walker to take less money, as done in the past with players such as LaMont Jordan who didn’t play up to their contract standards. Walker would be under no obligation to do so and would be made aware by his agent of the bind the Raiders would be in should he be waived.
The 2009 cap has not been set, but was $116 million in 2008 and has risen $7 million in each of the last two years.

So if the 2009 cap is $123 million and we have another top ten draft choice and place another franchise tag on Nnamdi Asomugha, combined with the $20 million in dead money – we won’t be able to afford much in free agency. That means the glaring holes in the WR corps, o-line and d-line will have to be filled through the NFL Draft and undrafted free agents.

There is a group of fans in Cincy that are upset regarding their team. They combined together and bought rental rights to a few billboards close to the stadium, on the billboards they are protesting their dis-like for the current state of their franchise. Their voice is being heard.
I wish we could do something like that, but since the Raiders are in the crap hole called Oakland, nobody has the money, brains, or wits to attempt such a thing.

This is nothing but front office incompetence. Might as well keep Walker on board and hope that he wants to “retire” again. Otherwise, let’s hope he works hard and can contribute next year.
The Walker, Hall experience is exactly why I DONT like free agency as a way to build the team. with free agents you rarely get an honest and complete picture. No one is going to tell you the bad things. ALso, you don’t know the little things, the nuances.
Keep the youth movement going. And if we have to bring in free agents, let them be the Drew Carter’s and Kalimba Edwards’ of the world.
$20 million dollar cap hit….and nothing to show for it.

PS: NAMDI DON’T SIGN A LONG TERM DEAL UNLESS AL HIRES A REAL EXPRIENCED COACH AND GENERAL MANAGER . YOU’RE TOO GOOD TO BE ON THIS HORRIBLE TEAM !!

The claw, nobody that is a diehard Raider fan will protest. Only fair weather fans with too much time on their hands would do soemthing so stupid. What makes you think Al Davis even cares what you think? You might gather 20 of your cronies for the protest, but we’ve sold out all but one home game this year so many fans are going there to cheer for and support the team, despite the dissatisfaction of losing, hoping this team will come together and turn the corner. Go jump on the Titans bandwagon until we start winning game if you’re so unhappy. you won’t be missed

RaiderRockstar,
This is a good thing ultimately. Forces us to develop the players we got. Hopefully the top 10 pick is a left tackle. So let’s look at the roster…
QB = We have to develop Russell Good thing!
RB = DMAC, Fargas and Bush…Good thing!
WRs = Schillens…Shields??, Higgins and Walker…Hopefully Shields is a player and Schillens can develop. Carter if knee holds up…it is what it is
TE = Set with Miller
LT = 1st round pick in 2009
LG = Set with Gallery
C = Grove is okay for now – Maybe re-sign Wade
RG = Carlisle is fine
RT = I’m pulling for Mario Henderson!!!! or cheap free agent
Our wide receiver position is dependent on Schillens and Shields. Hopefully, Walker can come back next year and be ready to work.. The Left Tackle is more important to fill with the draft pick than Wide Receiver. Also, maybe we attract a mid-level free agent at receiver or use our number 2 draft pick.

RaiderRockstar,
On defense..
DE = I like Derrick Burgess when healthy, othewise platoon Trevor Scott and Jay Richardson
DE = Fine with Kalimba Edwards…little weak against the run but a decent pass rusher
DT = Have to keep Kelly, Warren, let’s see what’s in the draft here
LB = Move Morrison to SLB and find a hitting MLB in the 2nd or 3rd rounds…maybe free agent if available
SS = Fine with Wilson
FS = Free agent…we don’t know how to develop safeties
CB = Keep Nnamdi, Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt
In my opinion, get a free agent free safety that has a good 5 or 6 years left. Put Terdell Sands and Tommy Kelly on a fitness program the day after our last game. Look for a middle linebacker in the draft…not a priority though.

S&B: it’s hard to know how good other players will be if we get another new Head Coach and change the schemes. If we scrap the zone blocking system and decide to move on w/o Cable what will happen to the o-line? Will Gallery stay at LG or be moved back to tackle? How will he perform? Will all the penalties and false starts resurface? Grove is not a big powerful center, he relies on aggression and technique, which is why he fits the zbs. Carlisle and Green are zbs players and Cooper is a free agent after the season. We may need 5 new players on the o-line or we may be faced with another 2006 debacle on the o-line. these guys need continuity and if Cable doesn’t win 3 more game this year I think he’s out.

S&B -
I blame the defensive woes on Rob Ryan. I think Morrison at MLB and Huff at FS are good. A new D-Cord will know how to use the talent on this defense and take them to the next level. We still need a DT since Sands is not an every down player and Kelly & Warren have injury concerns. Not to mention Kelly’s high cap number. yikes! I’d take a DT in Round 2 of the draft, right after LT. WR’s will be there in round 3 or 4 and we have plenty of youngsters in the WR corps as it is: Shields, Schilens, Higgins, Holland, Watkins, etc

RaiderRockstar,
Your sobering assessment of the offensive line is unfortunately pretty accurate. The good news is if we get rid of the ZBS, we still don’t have to clean house completely. I figure that we have to get a new left tackle in the draft regardless. Gallery is a big enough guy to hang in there at guard ZBS or not. Grove was drafted during the Turner/Shell regime. We can survive with him another year. Right guard…maybe we can get Kevin Boothe back…and finally we have to replace Cornell Green regardless. Hopefully that’s Mario.
Just getting rid of Harris and Green will improve our O-Line regardless of the system.

RaiderRockstar,
I tend to agree with you on Rob Ryan and his impact, or lack of thereof, on the defense. Problem with changing the defensive scheme is that Al Davis has plenty of input here. That’s why Ryan is still here. He is duty bound to Davis and his scheme.
Regardless, a new coach may be able to better recognize the talents and limitations of the talent on the team.
I think we still need a free safety. Huff is clueless out there and Rashad Baker seemed to make plays.
The next 7 weeks will be huge for Chrs Johnson and Rashad Baker. I am hoping they develop into decent starters. Sands should either be demoted or released. Someone should put in his contract a weight and conditioning clause. When he is on, he is pretty good. Kelly same thing. I also wonder if the defensive line coach is at fault here too.

S&B:
It’s hard to know how much impact Davis has on gameplans and schemes. We know for a fact that he chooses all the players in the draft and free agency, but coaches that he trusts can have a say. Turner got us to draft Gallery & Grove (not sexy picks). Shell got us to draft Huff (needed a franchise QB). Russell & McFadden are the Al Davis sexy picks. Same with Walker & Hall, that has AL DAVIS written all over it. Walsh was recruited by Shell, not Davis. Knapp, Cable, Rathman, Coe, Jackson & Defillipo were all brought in with Kiffin. Davis didn’t bring them in. He brought in Ryan 5 years ago and Lofton last offseason. I think Davis got more involved when he felt he couldn’t trust Kiffin. So we need a Head Coach Davis can trust. One that can take a turd offese and transform it into something fully functional. Rob Ryan ran a 3-4 defense his first year here. It didn’t suit the players strengths and he scrapped it after one year. Then he tried a cover 2 defense, which was Kiffin’s preferance. We got burned. That’s why we keep going back to the same old thing – Ryan can’t coach, in any scheme or system. Get him the heck outta here !!!
November 14th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I would be shocked if we didn’t draft offensive tackle with our first pick. Even if the geeks at Mississippi Valley State’s science lab cloned Jerry Rice and made him available in the draft this April. I would still draft left tackle. We’ll go nowhere until we replace every last lineman on both sides of the ball.

Why, why, why, did we not cut Walker before this happened?
This is the whole reason D-Hall was cut after 8 games, right? Because he sucked and if he got hurt it would screw us next year.
Well, Walker sucked too and was much more of an injury risk. Why did we keep this bum around? We’ll probably have to keep him on the roster for 2009 now because of this.

RaiderRockstar,
I lean towards Davis’ impact on the defense simply because Ryan is the only guy that’s lasted through this debacle. Either way, Rob Ryan is responsible, and he alone, for the uneven performance of this defense. In the first half of the season, the defense would play well until it got a comfortable lead. Then it would get soft. That was on Ryan and Ryan alone. In the Cable era, the defense would show up one week (Jets, Carolina)) and COMPLETELY disappear in other games (Atlanta, New Orleans).
A decent d-coordinator could get our defense from horrible to average. And if we just had average we’d be ok.
Still think that we need a free safety though. Unsure what to make of our defensive tackle positions.

Chris, Al Davis simply overestimates talent and I think he got desparate for a receiver last year. Remember, the Cowboys were rumored to be interested in Walker. The Hall and Walker signings are just more proof that Davis needs help.
I think if we had stuck with Routt, Fabian and Chris Johnson, we actually would have had a better defense. Consequently, I think we beat Buffalo and maybe San Diego. Just my opinion.

S&B:
Ryan is a players coach. The players love him. Davis is a players owner. The players love him. The Head Coach is always the fall guy. Davis has shown in the past that he isn’t afraid to axe a coach he likes, if that guy doesn’t produce. Art Shell & Norv Turner are examples of this. Callahan & Kiffin are not – they could have used more time, whether they deserved it or not. Davis is also very cheap. Ryan probably could have got canned at Turner or Shell’s request, but not Kiffins. Even though Kiffin was right about Ryan being a bust, Davis kept him in spite of that because Ryan was loyal to him and Kiffin wasn’t.

Oakland Raiders at Miami Dolphins: Let’s see: Since taking over as interim coach of the Raiders, Tom Cable has cut cornerback DeAngelo Hall and benched wide receiver Ronald Curry, safety Michael Huff and offensive tackle Kwame Harris. He’s also taken the play calling away from offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. The result has been four losses in five games, and the Raiders have been outscored 70-13 in the first halves of the past five games. Under former coach Lane Kiffin, the Raiders outscored opponents 30-24 in the first half, but they had trouble closing out games. Under Cable, the Raiders get off to horrible starts and can’t recover. Now they play an East Coast game in which Raiders body clocks will be at 10 a.m. Don’t you think there’s a chance the Dolphins might jump on them early?

First of all
Who is going to be the next head coach availiable next year.Al needto think hard and be really smart who he pick as a H.C I can see him get get Fassel or Mike Singletary if he doesn’t resign with the niners. They need to make a huge trade on offensive line next year. To trade or release player like harris and walker is probably going to be hard to get a quailiy player in free agent.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
No matter how badly we think we need Crabtree we need offensive and defensive linemen more than anything. As a matter of fact I would endorse us taking just offensive and defensive linemen only with every draft pick plus sign as many additional linemen as we can as college free agents.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Where is the hope? The Raiders are nearing rock-bottom
November 14th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
WE will probably end up with a top 5 pick again this year. I think we should trade that pick, for a 12th or 13th and a second rounder. Then trade one of our seconds and a 5th or 6th rounder for a low first round pick. That way we get 2 first round picks, and can draft two much needed line men. Whether it’s LT, RT, or LT, DE, whatever. Then in the second round draft another linemen. Then draft a WR with our 3rd, a safety with our 4th, another lineman with our 5th, a LB with our 6th and maybe another WR or line man with our 7th…

Why don’t you guys hire Herm Edwards and really get Carl Petersen mad at you?
November 14th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
There is no plans for a collective bargaining agreement to be signed after 09 and that means there will be no cap in football. So, after 09 none of the cap talk matters. I still think we need to get Crabtree and then worry about drafting and a left tackel and a right tackle and any other position we have needs. I think Jmac, Dmac and Crabtree would be a nice young tandem for the future. If we are trying to build through the draft let’s not miss on a can’t miss like Crabtree. Then if JMac doesn’t work out. We can go sign Matt Cassel, and when that QB has those weapons he can start winning for us.

Schottenhimer (sp) For GM
It’s a win win.
NOT Head Coach, but GM
Better that Brian “The Brain” Billik
Also if the Tuna and Al are such good buddies..
Why didn’t he come here?
Pretty sad when we are already planning for next season

Oakland Raiders (2-7) at Miami Dolphins (5-4), 1 p.m. ET
Tony Sparano should prove to the Oakland Raiders what a difference a new coach can make, even in just one season.
The Raiders will, in all likelihood, try to get it right again after the season, hiring a new coach for the fifth time in seven years. From Bill Callahan to Tom Cable, the Raiders have struggled mightily.
As the Raiders travel to Miami to face the resurgent Dolphins, who were 1-15 last season, they can look at Sparano and see hope for next year and another new Oakland head coach.

The salary cap isn’t the issue. Getting quality offensive and defensive linemen is. Al Davis has lost his mind, and hopefully his will to live. He has no more vision of talent. Javon Walker is a thug, who should have been released in August before getting a dime. DeAngelo Hall is an arrogant SOB, with no talent. Al’s son is an idiot if he doesn’t work with his mother to remove his dad out of the Managing General Partner role immediately. I refuse to buy season tickets again, unless something drastic happens. This is a worthless organization. And Jamarcus Russell needs to step up these final games of the season, because up until this point he has been a dud.

Maybe this is new cause for the commissioner to step in. After all the League is subsidizing this incompetence!

And with the fourth pick of the 2009 draft the Oakland Raiders select: From USC MLB Rey Maualuga
November 14th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Go away, Al. Cheap SOB. Won’t pay a coach a couple million, but the old buzzard sees nothing wrong with throwing 20 million down the drain on thugs who didn’t do 1 positive thing for us. The NFL history books will show you going down as a LOSER, Mr. Davis.

This just in from NFL Headquarters: Commisioner Goodell gives a new twist for the 2009 NFL Draft. The Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions will alternate at picking the first 32 Draftees in the first round of next years draft. The Commisioner said that without this new angle neither team has a chance to have a winning record in this millenium. Newly appointed Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luger will facilitate who gets the first pick. Secretary Luger said that it will be a joint decision between him and his aide/special advisor la llorona.

Matt Hubert from Erie, PA: It’s the Raiders’ inability to score. No one was expecting them to challenge the ‘07 Patriots for offensive firepower. Still, they had a solid running game last year. McFadden was supposed to add an explosive element to the offense. Walker was supposed to stretch the defense. Instead, the team has regressed. Fargas’ production is down. McFadden’s been hurt. Walker’s been missing in action. And Russell has failed to display the accuracy needed to sustain scoring drives. The offense is painful to watch, plain and simple.
GO STEELERS!!!!
November 14th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree. Because the Lions can’t do it.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Does anybody out there care about Al Davis?
November 14th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
And within 3 years all selections would either be on another team or out of football
November 14th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Further proof Al Davis is a retard.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
When you draft first in the draft it has to be on a position player unless there is a can’t miss Tackle on the board (Robert Gallery). I would rather have three JMac’s, and three DMacs, than one more Robert Gallery. Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree. A future weapon. Get the Tackles thru free agency or later rounds of the draft.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
The Commisioner has stepped in. In an unpresidented disicion the Commisioner stated today that the NFL has made a one for one trade with the CFL. The transaction sends the lowly Oakland Raiders to the CFL in exchange for the Vancouver team. Owner Al Davis’ advisers recommended strongly for Mr. Davis to not sign the trade papers but were told, “Go away you little trolls, you’re bothering me.” After nearly 45 minutes of coughing and wheezing Mr. Davis signed the papers to make the trade official.

Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree, and one more time Crabtree.

Repost of a great post:
There is a group of fans in Cincy that are upset regarding their team. They combined together and bought rental rights to a few billboards close to the stadium, on the billboards they are protesting their dis-like for the current state of their franchise. Their voice is being heard.
I wish we could do something like that, but since the Raiders are in the crap hole called Oakland, nobody has the money, brains, or wits to attempt such a thing.
sad, truly sad….
out witted and outclassed by bungle fans.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Maualuga is a scrapper….
We need that attitude on our D, that fear.
Use every other pick on lineman.
Crabtree would be a luxury pick.
Every Big name, top pick reciever recently has failed.
Reason…bottom teams have O-line issues.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
post91,Im thinking you mean JRUSS,I like the idea of stocking both lines ,just as Raiders_81 suggested

That’s why the so-called “experts” are playing ,right? But that’s O.K. Being a true diehard fan I’ll be watching my Raiders on NFL Ticket come Sunday morning with a nice cold 16 ouncer!! A true fan sticks by his team thru thick & thin! We’ll be back, although I must admit it’s been a tough stretch! GO RAIDERS !!!
November 14th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I’m just wondering what we’ll do next offseason that is stupid, that I’ll tell you all is stupid when we do it, and most of you won’t realize it’s stupid until November, like the Walker and Hall signings…
November 14th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
On any given sunday…
November 14th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
How come the number 4 pick in the draft is only the 16th rated rookie from the 2008 draft? How come the denver Broncos have 2 rookies that are rated in the top draft from the same draft? A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Hey super:
Talk to Detroit about how smart it is to draft WR’s.
Draft and build the lines. We have ignored our lines for the last four years which is why we are in the mess we are in now.

There are a lot of good OT’s and DT’s in the second, third, and fourth rounds. Many times better than the ones that go in the first, and you can get them for less money. I say we trade the first pick for as many second, third, and fourth round picks that we can get. Take care of the O line and and some help for the D line, and we will be ok next year.

Take Marcel Reece, forget the fullback crap and make him a tight end. He has good speed, good size, good strength, and he can catch the ball.
