Hall, Walker costly against ’09 cap

The Raiders are not only out $20 million in actual dollars for the 16 games played by DeAngelo Hall and Javon Walker, but will also see both players take up a good chunk of salary cap space in 2009.

With Hall having been waived, the Raiders will have $5.833,334 in “dead money” under the 2009 cap, according to league figures.

Walker, who underwent surgery Friday to have two screws interseted in his ankle, might end up sticking around for at least another year simply to avoid the bonus acceleration that would come with his release.

According to the wording of his contract, “Club agrees that it will pay Player the Roster Bonus despite the fact that, Player, due to an injury suffered while practicing or playing with Club in the immediate prior contract year.”

That essentially guarantees the Raiders will have to pay a $5 million bonus, unless they want to argue that Walker has completely recovered from surgery and is healthy. That road could be perilous. Players for the most part don’t care if Al Davis occasionally battles with coaches over money.

But after the Hall contract dump, if the Raiders were to attempt to skirt an injury guarantee, Davis’ reputation as a player’s owner would take a huge hit.

There is already some grumbling among agents that they will attempt to convince their clients not to go to Oakland. The same grumbling existed last year, and it didn’t matter because the Raiders were throwing money around and both players and agents were only to glad to take it in the form of bonuses and commissions.

The landscape could change if the perception of dysfunction carries over to the matter of actual dollars in the pockets of the players.

Assuming the Raiders pay the $5 millon bonus and make good on the injury guarantee, Walker’s salary cap figure will be $10,833,333, including $4 million in salary.

Should Oakland pay the guarantee as stipulated and then cut Walker, the 2009 cap charge $14,166,667 to terminate the relationship. Combined with the Hall dead money, that’s $20 million in dead money.

The Raiders could also attempt to get Walker to take less money, as done in the past with players such as LaMont Jordan who didn’t play up to their contract standards. Walker would be under no obligation to do so and would be made aware by his agent of the bind the Raiders would be in should he be waived.

The 2009 cap has not been set, but was $116 million in 2008 and has risen $7 million in each of the last two years.

    So if the 2009 cap is $123 million and we have another top ten draft choice and place another franchise tag on Nnamdi Asomugha, combined with the $20 million in dead money – we won’t be able to afford much in free agency. That means the glaring holes in the WR corps, o-line and d-line will have to be filled through the NFL Draft and undrafted free agents.

    This is nothing but front office incompetence. Might as well keep Walker on board and hope that he wants to “retire” again. Otherwise, let’s hope he works hard and can contribute next year.

    The Walker, Hall experience is exactly why I DONT like free agency as a way to build the team. with free agents you rarely get an honest and complete picture. No one is going to tell you the bad things. ALso, you don’t know the little things, the nuances.

    Keep the youth movement going. And if we have to bring in free agents, let them be the Drew Carter’s and Kalimba Edwards’ of the world.

    RaiderRockstar,

    This is a good thing ultimately. Forces us to develop the players we got. Hopefully the top 10 pick is a left tackle. So let’s look at the roster…

    QB = We have to develop Russell Good thing!
    RB = DMAC, Fargas and Bush…Good thing!
    WRs = Schillens…Shields??, Higgins and Walker…Hopefully Shields is a player and Schillens can develop. Carter if knee holds up…it is what it is
    TE = Set with Miller
    LT = 1st round pick in 2009
    LG = Set with Gallery
    C = Grove is okay for now – Maybe re-sign Wade
    RG = Carlisle is fine
    RT = I’m pulling for Mario Henderson!!!! or cheap free agent

    Our wide receiver position is dependent on Schillens and Shields. Hopefully, Walker can come back next year and be ready to work.. The Left Tackle is more important to fill with the draft pick than Wide Receiver. Also, maybe we attract a mid-level free agent at receiver or use our number 2 draft pick.

    RaiderRockstar,

    On defense..

    DE = I like Derrick Burgess when healthy, othewise platoon Trevor Scott and Jay Richardson
    DE = Fine with Kalimba Edwards…little weak against the run but a decent pass rusher
    DT = Have to keep Kelly, Warren, let’s see what’s in the draft here
    LB = Move Morrison to SLB and find a hitting MLB in the 2nd or 3rd rounds…maybe free agent if available
    SS = Fine with Wilson
    FS = Free agent…we don’t know how to develop safeties
    CB = Keep Nnamdi, Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt

    In my opinion, get a free agent free safety that has a good 5 or 6 years left. Put Terdell Sands and Tommy Kelly on a fitness program the day after our last game. Look for a middle linebacker in the draft…not a priority though.

    S&B: it’s hard to know how good other players will be if we get another new Head Coach and change the schemes. If we scrap the zone blocking system and decide to move on w/o Cable what will happen to the o-line? Will Gallery stay at LG or be moved back to tackle? How will he perform? Will all the penalties and false starts resurface? Grove is not a big powerful center, he relies on aggression and technique, which is why he fits the zbs. Carlisle and Green are zbs players and Cooper is a free agent after the season. We may need 5 new players on the o-line or we may be faced with another 2006 debacle on the o-line. these guys need continuity and if Cable doesn’t win 3 more game this year I think he’s out.

    S&B -

    I blame the defensive woes on Rob Ryan. I think Morrison at MLB and Huff at FS are good. A new D-Cord will know how to use the talent on this defense and take them to the next level. We still need a DT since Sands is not an every down player and Kelly & Warren have injury concerns. Not to mention Kelly’s high cap number. yikes! I’d take a DT in Round 2 of the draft, right after LT. WR’s will be there in round 3 or 4 and we have plenty of youngsters in the WR corps as it is: Shields, Schilens, Higgins, Holland, Watkins, etc

    RaiderRockstar,

    Your sobering assessment of the offensive line is unfortunately pretty accurate. The good news is if we get rid of the ZBS, we still don’t have to clean house completely. I figure that we have to get a new left tackle in the draft regardless. Gallery is a big enough guy to hang in there at guard ZBS or not. Grove was drafted during the Turner/Shell regime. We can survive with him another year. Right guard…maybe we can get Kevin Boothe back…and finally we have to replace Cornell Green regardless. Hopefully that’s Mario.

    Just getting rid of Harris and Green will improve our O-Line regardless of the system.

    RaiderRockstar,

    I tend to agree with you on Rob Ryan and his impact, or lack of thereof, on the defense. Problem with changing the defensive scheme is that Al Davis has plenty of input here. That’s why Ryan is still here. He is duty bound to Davis and his scheme.

    Regardless, a new coach may be able to better recognize the talents and limitations of the talent on the team.

    I think we still need a free safety. Huff is clueless out there and Rashad Baker seemed to make plays.

    The next 7 weeks will be huge for Chrs Johnson and Rashad Baker. I am hoping they develop into decent starters. Sands should either be demoted or released. Someone should put in his contract a weight and conditioning clause. When he is on, he is pretty good. Kelly same thing. I also wonder if the defensive line coach is at fault here too.

    S&B:

    It’s hard to know how much impact Davis has on gameplans and schemes. We know for a fact that he chooses all the players in the draft and free agency, but coaches that he trusts can have a say. Turner got us to draft Gallery & Grove (not sexy picks). Shell got us to draft Huff (needed a franchise QB). Russell & McFadden are the Al Davis sexy picks. Same with Walker & Hall, that has AL DAVIS written all over it. Walsh was recruited by Shell, not Davis. Knapp, Cable, Rathman, Coe, Jackson & Defillipo were all brought in with Kiffin. Davis didn’t bring them in. He brought in Ryan 5 years ago and Lofton last offseason. I think Davis got more involved when he felt he couldn’t trust Kiffin. So we need a Head Coach Davis can trust. One that can take a turd offese and transform it into something fully functional. Rob Ryan ran a 3-4 defense his first year here. It didn’t suit the players strengths and he scrapped it after one year. Then he tried a cover 2 defense, which was Kiffin’s preferance. We got burned. That’s why we keep going back to the same old thing – Ryan can’t coach, in any scheme or system. Get him the heck outta here !!!

  • Al’s Jogging Suit

    I would be shocked if we didn’t draft offensive tackle with our first pick. Even if the geeks at Mississippi Valley State’s science lab cloned Jerry Rice and made him available in the draft this April. I would still draft left tackle. We’ll go nowhere until we replace every last lineman on both sides of the ball.

    This is the whole reason D-Hall was cut after 8 games, right? Because he sucked and if he got hurt it would screw us next year.

    RaiderRockstar,

    I lean towards Davis’ impact on the defense simply because Ryan is the only guy that’s lasted through this debacle. Either way, Rob Ryan is responsible, and he alone, for the uneven performance of this defense. In the first half of the season, the defense would play well until it got a comfortable lead. Then it would get soft. That was on Ryan and Ryan alone. In the Cable era, the defense would show up one week (Jets, Carolina)) and COMPLETELY disappear in other games (Atlanta, New Orleans).

    A decent d-coordinator could get our defense from horrible to average. And if we just had average we’d be ok.

    Still think that we need a free safety though. Unsure what to make of our defensive tackle positions.

    Chris, Al Davis simply overestimates talent and I think he got desparate for a receiver last year. Remember, the Cowboys were rumored to be interested in Walker. The Hall and Walker signings are just more proof that Davis needs help.

    I think if we had stuck with Routt, Fabian and Chris Johnson, we actually would have had a better defense. Consequently, I think we beat Buffalo and maybe San Diego. Just my opinion.
