Cable, Davis discuss job

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at 7:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

On a day in which it was learned Tom Cable had his first substantive discussions with owner Al Davis regarding being the Raiders head coach in 2009, some of the assistant coaching staff is on the move in advance of the expiration of their contracts on Jan. 13.

Greg Knapp will be the offensive coordinator of the Seahawks, Tom Rathman will be offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, and ESPN was reporting Rob Ryan would join Eric Mangini’s staff with the Cleveland Browns as defensive coordinator.

Correction: Rathman will be running backs coach of the 49ers.

Also departing will be administrative aide Matt Capurro, who has worked as the assistant to the head coach since 2003 and some day ought to write a book being that he served in that capacity under Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin and Cable.

Capurro elected to take a position at USC.

Cable’s situation since the end of the season has in some ways been similar to that of Callahan, who eventually became the Raiders head coach after Jon Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2001 season.

When Gruden was dealt, Davis met with the coaching staff and made him “captain of the coaches” until he decided how he wanted to proceed.

“I wanted to see and we wanted to see Bill function in that role to see how the organization would operate,” Davis said when Callahan was hired March 13.

It was essentially a 22-day tryout, with Davis making the call without interviewing another candidate.

Cable got a head start on the in-season coaching when Lane Kiffin got his wish and was fired. By the end, he had fared better than Kiffin ever did, winning three of his last six games including the first back-to-back wins to end the regular season since 2002.

In the meantime, Cable has had his offseason tryout in terms of supervising self-scouting reports for the staff to prepare for free agency, and beat writer Steve Corkran reports he quietly talked with Davis about something beyond the daily goings-on Wednesday.

The only known outsider to talk with Davis about the position since the end of the season is Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride _ a “discussion” over the phone the Raiders say was at Gilbride’s request.

One name to keep in mind _ Jeff Jagodzinski. Jagodzinski was hopeful being interviewed in Seattle to be offensive coordinator after being fired at Boston College for interviewing for the head coaching job with the New York Jets.

That opportunity evaporated when Mora, as expected, hired Knapp, with whom he worked in San Francisco and Atlanta.

The offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers before being hired in 2007 at Boston College, Jagodzinski helped quarterback Matt Ryan have a superb senior season, and Ryan was one of the most poised, polished rookies to play quarterback in the NFL in years.

His work in that area could be of benefit to JaMarcus Russell.

Jagodzinski, 45, lost his job at Boston College for following through with an interview in New York after being told he would be fired for doing so. Athletic director Gene DiFilippo (the father of Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo) was angry Jagodzinski did not inform him in advance of the Jets interest.

It may sound a little too Kiffin-like to consider him as a head coaching candidate, but it’s not a stretch to envision Davis talking to him about being offensive coordinator should Jagodzinski not get the job with the Jets.

According to a Chronicle report, special teams coach Brian Schneider could also be on the move, with interviews in Jacksonville and Seattle.

Unknown, we will never again have a head coach even as good as Lane Kiffin, as long as Al Davis is alive. Kiffin was the best we could do, and Al screwed that up. We would be in the playoffs right now if Al hadn’t have bungled Kiffin.

Come on MaddenRaider are you really serious?! The Raiders would be in the playoffs with Kiffin? You mean like last year when Kiffin was coach?

Maybe think about letting this crap go, it is not serving you well.

Gruden didn’t build anything but a conservative offense in Oakland. He had no say in the defense, player acquisitions, or coaching changes. Bruce Allen was the buffer for Davis on player contract negotiations.

  • Brien(Got many haters)

Hahahahahaha Kiffin would have lost to NYJ, Denver,Houston and TB. We would have had the number 2 pick with a 2-14 record. Even the wimp Jake Grove said Kiffin quit on the team so there

  • http://none MaddenRaider

My bad. Gruden wanted to get rid of James Jett. He said so a couple of times, but was never able too. And, you’re right, he did score a touchdown in Gruden’s final game. But if it wasn’t for Al’s lousy defense (Anthony Dorsett…), we wouldn’t have even been playing in New England in that snow. Gruden wanted Johnny Harris to play over Dorsett. Al wasn’t having it. Dorsett = Davis scholarship. The dude flat out sucked. Got pump faked by Tent Dilfer and blew his position on that Shannan Sharp play too, in the ’00 AFC championship. that’s Al, for you.

Oakglenn, you’re so smart. You know so much about football. What’s Al Davis’s record since 2003?
    —————————————————–

Well, I am smarter than you, and I know much more football than you will ever know. Those things I will agree with. Why don’t we talk about the year before 2002?? We were fighting for a world championship. The year before that was the infamous Tuck Game. That was some good football.

I think your point is the last few years have been disastrous. They have been. It does not take a Rhodes scholar to understand or agree with that. The difference between you and I is you want to boil it down to one thing and one thing only. That is preposterous. Most teams that lose in the Super Bowl go on a downward spiral: The Rams, Raiders, Seattle was in the Super Bowl 2 years ago, this year they were 4-12, the Bears were not a playoff team, NE was 16-0 last year and did not make the playoffs this year.

Al Davis has made some completely disastrous moves. No one is denying that. Is that the only reason this team has played so poorly?? Probably not. Obviously the coaching carousel has to stop turning. Davis needs to get a solid coach, get a solid staff, and let them concentrate on building a system and having continuity here. There are some very very good players here to build around. Does Davis need help in the front office?? Obviously, and even he has admitted it.

Lastly, to change a program around there are a couple of things you need to do: evaluate where you are, emphasize improvement and set high standards. Interestingly, Tom Cable has done just that. Spending a lot of time and energy on what has gone wrong in the past, especially the distant past (meaning more than three years) is a waste. It’s just like Raider fans claiming we are a Super Bowl team because we won Super Bowl XI. It’s irrelevant to winning next year. Fortunately there are a few posters in here that spend their time posting their opinions on what this team needs to do to improve. You, MR, are not one of them.

More false shyt from MR’s mouth. Lousy defense of Al’s? So when the Raiders lost 3 straight games after being 10-3 it was Al’s fault? Look at how pitiful the Raiders offense was that stretch and the turnovers on offense? you remember in Miami and at home vs Tenn? Idiot Marquez Dope messed up the Shapre play in 2000 along with Bresnahan not calling the sticks formation we ran all year on 3rd and long. So MR try again. I’ll slap your BS at every turn

have we got to the point where we think cable is a good coach, because he won 2 games against 2 mediocre teams. did we all forget the idiot play calling he was doing all the other weeks, and yes good riddance ryan is gone, knapp I think was never given a chance to coach the way he wants to. We need a schottenheimer over here or go new, with mcdaniels. we have a very talented team. our offense is a young offense but has proven they can move the ball, our defense was good but could have been great with the talent and experience we had on that side. I would like to get rid of some of these players but now that I think about it, what if they really are good we just dont know it because of the owner and coaches. Please refer to moss, collins, f. washington, p.buchanon. carlisle, carr. walker. the raiders use to be the team that gave second chances, now we are the team that let’s the player realize that he needs a second chance just not with this team…. and they go on to better things with good coaches and knowledgeable owners. Mr. davis you want to save your legacy, hire pioli from new england or peterson from chiefs, and then hire a schottenheimer, or mcdaniels, and let them coach. sign these guys for 4-5 years and let’s give them a chance to build their team.your strategy has not worked for over 10 years then it worked 6 years ago, and then you slipped up again.

  • http://none MaddenRaider

Brien, it’s common knowledge and well documented that Gruden wanted J. Harris over A. Dorsett. Lil Anthony is Tony Dorsett’s son and Al is friends with him. Scholarship politics at it’s ugliest. Dorsett was hideous. All he did was go for the pick, and blew his coverage constantly. He gave up that TD to Sharpe in the AFC title game. He had the deep field and Trent Dilfer wisely pump faked him, knowing he’d go for the pick. Gruden wanted that azzhole out of here but Davis insisted he start instead. Al Davis and his games. With J. Harris playing safety our pass defense would have been twice as good, and we wouldn’t have blown so many plays. Al Davis’s poor defense held Gruden back.

KK I said lets go back 12 years with the records. Then I want you to claim Davis gets all the credit and blame with the same vigor you list the past six years of play as the only time that counts. Lots of coaches and owners have been around for the past twenty five years so yes its as relevant now as it was twenty five years ago.
