Cable, Davis discuss job

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at 7:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

On a day in which it was learned Tom Cable had his first substantive discussions with owner Al Davis regarding being the Raiders head coach in 2009, some of the assistant coaching staff is on the move in advance of the expiration of their contracts on Jan. 13.

Greg Knapp will be the offensive coordinator of the Seahawks, Tom Rathman will be offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, and ESPN was reporting Rob Ryan would join Eric Mangini’s staff with the Cleveland Browns as defensive coordinator.

Correction: Rathman will be running backs coach of the 49ers.

Also departing will be administrative aide Matt Capurro, who has worked as the assistant to the head coach since 2003 and some day ought to write a book being that he served in that capacity under Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin and Cable.

Capurro elected to take a position at USC.

Cable’s situation since the end of the season has in some ways been similar to that of Callahan, who eventually became the Raiders head coach after Jon Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2001 season.

When Gruden was dealt, Davis met with the coaching staff and made him “captain of the coaches” until he decided how he wanted to proceed.

“I wanted to see and we wanted to see Bill function in that role to see how the organization would operate,” Davis said when Callahan was hired March 13.

It was essentially a 22-day tryout, with Davis making the call without interviewing another candidate.

Cable got a head start on the in-season coaching when Lane Kiffin got his wish and was fired. By the end, he had fared better than Kiffin ever did, winning three of his last six games including the first back-to-back wins to end the regular season since 2002.

In the meantime, Cable has had his offseason tryout in terms of supervising self-scouting reports for the staff to prepare for free agency, and beat writer Steve Corkran reports he quietly talked with Davis about something beyond the daily goings-on Wednesday.

The only known outsider to talk with Davis about the position since the end of the season is Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride _ a “discussion” over the phone the Raiders say was at Gilbride’s request.

One name to keep in mind _ Jeff Jagodzinski. Jagodzinski was hopeful being interviewed in Seattle to be offensive coordinator after being fired at Boston College for interviewing for the head coaching job with the New York Jets.

That opportunity evaporated when Mora, as expected, hired Knapp, with whom he worked in San Francisco and Atlanta.

The offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers before being hired in 2007 at Boston College, Jagodzinski helped quarterback Matt Ryan have a superb senior season, and Ryan was one of the most poised, polished rookies to play quarterback in the NFL in years.

His work in that area could be of benefit to JaMarcus Russell.

Jagodzinski, 45, lost his job at Boston College for following through with an interview in New York after being told he would be fired for doing so. Athletic director Gene DiFilippo (the father of Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo) was angry Jagodzinski did not inform him in advance of the Jets interest.

It may sound a little too Kiffin-like to consider him as a head coaching candidate, but it’s not a stretch to envision Davis talking to him about being offensive coordinator should Jagodzinski not get the job with the Jets.

According to a Chronicle report, special teams coach Brian Schneider could also be on the move, with interviews in Jacksonville and Seattle.

The Oklahoma Sooners played 780 minutes of football this season. They only trailed for 18 minutes of the entire 780! Now that is a stat!

I wouldn’t be surprised if big Al was trying to lure Bob Stoops over to the darkside. Then when Stoops turns him down Al will hire someone from his staff and say that was his guy all along.

Why are these cry babies still loving Al’s team??

Can any smart mind answer?? shhhhh

OJ never tarnished the game in and of itself. He just killed a white bytch and her punk boyfriend. Had nothing to do with football. Al Davis has disgraced the game. He rode to success on the backs of other people, and as more is revealed, he’ll be out of that hall. Watch.

Could Marinelli to the Raiders work?

How’s this for your next Raiders defensive coordinator or defensive line coach:

    Rod Marinelli.

Yes, he just led the Detroit Lions to a 0-16 season.

And true, he comes from the Tony Dungy coaching tree, meaning he’s fond of the Tampa 2 defensive scheme.

But Marinelli is popular not that he is unemployed. He’s in Houston today and has already spoken with Seattle and Chicago.

Marinelli was a candidate for the Raiders head-coaching job in 2006 before the team went with Art Shell.

The Raiders’ best in-house candidate to be the new defensive coordinator, linebackers coach Don Martindale, could bolt for Cleveland or another job rather than wait and hope to get a promotion from the Raiders.

Defensive line coach Keith Millard’s contract is up and based on what other Raider coaches are doing, he could be on his way to more stable employment.

And Marinelli, who has been around talented defenders as the defensive line coach in Tampa with Dungy and later Jon Gruden, could be intrigued by the opportunity to see if he can push the likes of Tommy Kelly and Derrick Burgess to new levels.

Former Raider Warren Sapp always spoke highly of Marinelli and how he found ways to motivate, challenge and help defensive linemen improve.

Most consider the fiasco that led to the Lions going winless to be Matt Millen’s fault so Marinelli’s reputation as a leader appears to be in good standing.

But I guess finding a head coach should be the priority.

Already done the research my friend. Just putting stats out there for all to see. Am I saying the Sooners will win? Not exactly. Just putting some numbers out there.

We’ll see what happens tonight. Can Florida’s D hang with being on the field for possibly 15 to 20 more plays than they are used to? We shall see. The Sooners no huddle offense allows them an average of 18 more plays than any other team in college.

Do the math, more opportunities = more chances to score points than the opposing team, no matter who it is.

  • http://Raiders Oakglenn’s Revenge

Should be a good game tonite. Someone was mentioning the Ok WR Inglesias. Pretty good size, not real fast, just a productive player. Something we never look at: actual production. Floridas defense will be too fast for OK tonite. Go Gators!!

MR and his buddy KK say: “AL sucks!”

    Wow, good argument.

  • darkknight01

Gilbride isn’t my top choice…..Harbaugh would be my guy.

I have to admit though that Gilbride has done a good job with Manning and the G-Mens efficient offense in NY.

He would bring a winning attitude, experience and confidence. Lets hope he has learned from mistakes he made in San Diego, which I’m sure he has since he has been in NY under Coughlin.

The offensive line would maintain some continuity with Cable staying and the ZBS system would be kept but tweaked a bit by Gilbride. Contrary to popular belief, the Giants do not run just a straight up man to man power blocking system 100% of the time. Many of their run plays are actually ZONE power blocking schemes.

Plus Gilbride has been a solid play caller throughout his career overall.

The G-Men utilize a 3 back system and the Raiders have a 3 solid backs with a QB who needs to develop.

If this occurs then lets hope Waufle comes onboard as DC. He can bring that aggressive 4-3 base that utilizes blitzes (unlike Rob Ryan) and utilizes stunts, disguises coverages and blitz packages that he has hopefully learned from Spags who learned from the great Jim Johnson. Waufle also is from California and he still owns a home here.

  • vegas raider

One the Dilfer pass Dorsett took his typical horrible angle and overran the play. But let’s not forget the flag-football defense Pope played on the play as well. And the fact that Breshnahan dialed up a blitz on 3rd and 17, up 3-0, and a simple “sticks” defense would have gotten the ball back in good field position for our top-ranked offense. I was at the game and the air was taken out of the place on the TD.

Harris was playing in that game because he had a pick in the second half. Don’t think he was on the field on the Sharpe TD.

There is no doubt in my mind that Florida can hang offensively. Just wait until the 4th quarter rolls around and take a look at how the Florida D is responding. If you see a bunch of guys on the DLine grabbing their pants and only in a 2 point stance at the snap, Florida is screwed.

The No Huddle Offense takes its toll late in games when Defenses are fatigued.

Should be a hell of a game though.

    __________________________________________

Rockstar knowing Raider fan in here, that would be a catastrophe. Not that Marinelli would be a bad hire, it’s just that with the Dungy style Tampa Two, once again the defense is predicated with a front four rush, not a lot of blitzing and keeping everything in front of the defense. It be the exact same Rob Ryan riot in here. Only different.

  • Ennio Morricone

KK I asked you to post the record from 1998 to 2008, if it did not bother you, because you said that going as far back as 1989 was not relevant anymore. Obviously this does bother you by your response, anyway if 1989 counts then so does the previous two decades before that, so like I said before, you might as well just show the whole record of the Raiders since Al Davis took over because that is what is realistic and most relevant KK.

  • http://Raiders Oakglenn’s Revenge

KoolKell why don’t you ship every one of your posts back six years ago when people gave a fuk about six years ago. Dude has completely lost it.

Darkknight thats all well and good unless you can’t stop the run, then your offense scores so quickly the defense plays most of the game anyway.

Cable and AL have been meeting in-person and otherwise for days.

Some, not all, coaches have been allowed to talk to other teams before their contracts run out — and those decisions have been made by AL and Tom together.

Cable has a fine offensive mind, not discussed much, and disguised by his Everyman looks. JaMarcus Russell will be fine with whomever Cable selects as OC — because Cable has seen what JaMarcus can do with his particular skills-set.

Get JaMarcus a double-team-worthy WR, and Tom Cable’s offense is top-12 instantly (provided the O-Line does not regress…).

If Michael Bush starts, and McFadden touches the ball 15 times per game (from all over the field), the team will have a top-5 rushing attack.

  • Ennio Morricone

I get the feeling Florida’s backs are going to run all over Oklahoma.

HD#37, Tom Cable is a very very solid offensive play caller. what most people in here do not realize is Knapp was calling most of the plays for the lst part of Cables tenure. After we were getting killed out there and Tom realized Gregg “Taking A” Knapp was gonna cost him his job!! Cable started calling the plays and you saw a much better offensive design.
