Cable’s father passes away

Tom Cable has more on his mind than the expiration of his contract and his chances at becoming the head coach of the Raiders.

Last Thursday, the day after a four-hour interview with Al Davis to discuss the job, Cable’s father, Thomas Lee Cable Sr., died in Everett, Washington.

Tom Sr. was 68 years old and had been in failing health.

Had a chance to talk with Tom Sr. on Sept. 30, a couple of hours before the press conference that announced the firing of Lane Kiffin and Cable’s ascension to interim head coach.

While he never let on that he knew his son was getting the job, Tom Sr. said with pride that Tom Jr. was no stranger to hard work, having grown up on a farm, and that it was apparent from an early age that he had an affinity for coaching.

Tom Sr. is survived by his wife Shirley, son Tom Jr., daughter Tammy, three grandchildren and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday in Washington.

Taylor Mays staying at USC…What is Al going to do now????

^ Really? If true, thats actually a good thing for the team, because the old man will not draft and pay big money for a another safety with the #7 pick.

Can I get that question answered by ALL of you??

^ Pops and Uncles were Raider fans and I remember seeing some of the playoff games and the 1980 Super Bowl win against the Eagles, the rest is history. I was born and raised in the East Bay also.

Dakota – The hire of Pioli to the Chiefs is very bad for us. I loved watching Herm Edwards dismantle the Chiefs all by himself. Now, they have some intelligence in the office who knows they have to get rid of him. I’m afraid Pioli will go after a guy like Rex Ryan to punish us with Ryan’s revenge.

As for the Broncos, I’m happy as hell to see Mike Nolan coach their defense. Hes a terrible coach in my opinion. Hes very conservative and I think our offense can capitalize on that but we’re going to have to score alot of points with McDaniels running that offense.

Dakota – If anything, Mays saw the writing on the wall. He knew he was destined to get drafted by the Raiders so he knew he’d rather stay with USC. The Raiders are so bad right now, they’re making student athletes decide to continue their education instead of get paid millions by an NFL team.

I am a fan of the Raiders.

I have done alot of things in my life, some very good, some very bad, but nothing gets my RAGE going like a good Raider game. All the hate, anger, love, passion, and brute force comes out and I go nuts every time. I am an out of control Raider fan drunk.

    SHANAHAN OWES RAIDERS MONEY, TOO
Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2009, 7:59 a.m.
One of the most widely-held beliefs in media and league circles is that the Raiders still owe former coach Mike Shanahan a large chunk of money.

And that’s true. To be precise, they owe him $157,625, plus roughly 15 years of interest. (In some jurisdictons, the pre-judgment interest rate would push the total amount due over $400,000.)

But what isn’t known (or at least hasn’t been reported) is that the Shanahan owes the Raiders money, too.

Specifically, he owes the team $125,000.

Though the amount isn’t technically due to be paid until 2025, it’s believed that his debt to the team is one of the reasons for his decision to never file a legal action aimed at compelling the franchise to pay what is owed to him.

And even though he apparently owes no interest on the amount until the due date in 2025, there’s another angle that could result in Shanahan being stuck with a hefty tax bill.

Since the $125,000 debt was the result of a loan from the Raiders to Shanahan, the Raiders could forgive the loan at any time, triggering the instant transformation of the debt to income.

And, as we understand it, the IRS would impute interest onto the original loan, possibly increasing significantly the number that would constitute additional income to Shanahan.

Though it’s unclear whether Shanahan has refrained from pushing the matter because of that specific angle, the fact remains that, for whatever reason, he hasn’t filed suit to recover the money owed to him. It’s possible that he has opted instead to simply use the situation as a tool for generating good P.R. for himself, and further bad P.R. for a franchise that has seen plenty of it over the years, and in plenty of cases justifiably.

In this case, the Raiders also are partially in the wrong. They owe Shanahan $157,625, and never have paid the debt. But the other side of the coin here is that Shanahan also owes the team $125,000.

Family is all Raiders fans, and season ticket holders. Was a LA Raider fan, but when they moved back to Oakland I was 14 or 15 and went to a few games and was hooked.

  • #24 Aka Huff24

Dakota – Well, Its Rex Ryan’s decision and if Pioli offered him the job, he could very well take it over going to New York. I don’t think any Ryan should have that much pressure on him. They’ll just explode.

Crabtree is entering the draft. Maybe we draft him now? How serious was his injury in the bowl game? I do think he’ll be drafted before the Raiders get to pick depending on the severity of his injury.

Yup, Pioli in a year will have us for lunch if the state of the Raiders today doesn’t get better…
Anyways, about McDaniels on the Bronco’s sidelines…it will probably be a little more dynamic, but to me it is still the same with Cutler firing almost all day. Their defense is gonna have to step up, along with ours…

^ All I ask for as a fan is SMART and RATIONALE decision making from the owner. Thats all…but it seems like the old man has been in capable of doing so for the last 6 years and the bad trend has continued.

Now that Pioli has been hired by the queefs and McDaniels hired by the ponies….it is even MORE important that the old man hires a Personnel Man/GM and hires the right coaches to COUNTER what the Queefs and Ponies have just done.

    VERY freakin important and critical.

Well, Been a fan since ’74 because at that time (and still is), my favorite color was/is black. Unfortunately, my dad is a big 9er fan, and one day they happened to be playing the Raiders, and low and behold, they were wearing black…I have seen the 76/77 SB year that Madden was coach (favorite coach of the Raiders, btw) and tore apart the Purple People Eaters; the 81 year blasting the Eagles; 84 (LA) blasting Washington, and then endured all the bad years since then…Bleed Silver and Black…always have and always will. Season ticket holder, too. hey…we just love the tailgate parties at 8AM. Nothing better to do on Sunday…

Oakglenn – You of all people have no right calling anybody an idiot as You’re the King of Idiots.

Theres OBVIOUSLY a big difference between Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan when it comes to coaching defense. Rex has proven that hes a great Coordinator while Rob has not. On the flip side, I think Al Davis has ALOT to do with why are defense plays poorly and Rob Ryan has taken alot of the blame. We will find out what kind of defense Rob Ryan really likes as the Browns Defensive Coordinator and its no surprise the defense is already 3-4 built and ready for him. We’ll see who’s really responible for running the Raiders defense.

With that being said, I’m happy to see Ryan gone for the sake of change. Willie Shaw seemed to run the defense better under the tutelage of Al Davis so I’m hoping someone else can do the same but Rob Ryan was obviously running a scheme he wasn’t fit for so in essence, it was just a wrong fit. That doesn’t mean hes a bad coach, that just means he needs to stop doing everything the Owner wanted him to do and now he has that chance.

Also, if you’re going to put me in the company of MR, KK, Darkknight and Dakota. Thats fine with me. You have basically shown that its the world vs. you so continue and make your enemies. Its just a Raiders blog afterall.
