Cable’s father passes away

Tom Cable has more on his mind than the expiration of his contract and his chances at becoming the head coach of the Raiders.

Last Thursday, the day after a four-hour interview with Al Davis to discuss the job, Cable’s father, Thomas Lee Cable Sr., died in Everett, Washington.

Tom Sr. was 68 years old and had been in failing health.

Had a chance to talk with Tom Sr. on Sept. 30, a couple of hours before the press conference that announced the firing of Lane Kiffin and Cable’s ascension to interim head coach.

While he never let on that he knew his son was getting the job, Tom Sr. said with pride that Tom Jr. was no stranger to hard work, having grown up on a farm, and that it was apparent from an early age that he had an affinity for coaching.

Tom Sr. is survived by his wife Shirley, son Tom Jr., daughter Tammy, three grandchildren and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday in Washington.

    Hwnrdr,

so you have seen much of the Raider’s ups, and downs. Can you ever imagin life as anything other than a RAIDER fan?

Does anything else give you that feeling?

Truthfully, NO…My kids being born has taken some of that fire away, but not very much. My son knows it when he watches the road games on tv with me. I guess my son growing up a Raider fan comes close, but through all of those years and being able to get drunk by 9 – 9:30 on Sundays to cheer on the Raiders, win or lose…that is something that is hard to beat. Oh yeah, what makes it more amazing is that I grew up in Hawaii a Raider Fan, then moved up here in the Bay in 2001, and in 2006, became a season ticket holder. Can’t ask for anything better than that. It helps when you have a wife that is understanding about that through football season…

The hiring of Scott Pioli basically means the Kansas City Chiefs has just leap-frogged the Oakland Raiders. Even the Chiefs have enough common sense to hire a legit GM, and then fix the coaching situation. Now Cable has to worry about fixing the Raiders’ mess while dealing with Al Davis, and cope with the loss of his Father (assuming he gets the job). That’s gonna be very hard & stressful. Looks like we’re back at the bottom.

    Chin up Cable!

As you all know there is no one who hates the Raiders or Al Davis more than me, but I do have to give Al his ups. He got two guys on the All Pro Roster. That’s better than a lot of teams. Maybe Al does still have a little something left. But it will probably be gone soon.

You make absolutely zero sense. Man where do you guys come form? Is there a factory somewhere mass producing idiots and labeling them Raider fans? You are a afraid of a guy that has never even been a GM in the NFL who is going to a team with half the talent that we have on our roster! Why the heck would you be scared of that? Cable has this team primed and Al as produced great drafts over the past two seasons. We are in way better shape than KC and I would even venture to say that we will be better off than the Patriots in the next two years. If you are than AFRAID why don’t you just go home and hide under your bed because you are useless to us here.

AL DAVIS IS GOING TO TALK TO BATES FROM DENVER!!!!!

Broncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates has been granted permission by the team to talk with the Oakland Raiders about a job on that team’s coaching staff.

Raiders owner Al Davis, who has been hospitalized in recent weeks, has been interviewing head-coaching candidates. The Raiders sought, in writing, and were granted permission to speak with Bates about a role on a new coaching staff, possibly even head coach.

Bates, 32, just finished his first season as the Broncos’ primary play-caller. Quarterback Jay Cutler set a franchise single-season record for yards passing and earned his first Pro Bowl trip.

Bates is one of four offensive assistants from Mike Shanahan’s former staff, in addition to Rick Dennison, Bobby Turner and Jedd Fisch, who are slated to meet with new coach Josh McDaniels to stay on the staff.

However, McDaniels has already said he will call plays in the Broncos’ offense, so Bates’ role moving forward could be limited to coaching the quarterbacks and participating in the game planning.

Turner and Dennison met with McDaniels on Tuesday.

Bates is out of town and could not be reached for comment.

BSJ… re your post#78… You nailed it right there. I lost my mom when I was 11. I’m almost 50 and it still hurts.

May the Lord take Tom and his family into His heart and ease their pain and heartache…

  • Dakota

I should have never doubted my man Al Davis!!!!!

    (just kidding)!

  • edward teach

Hwnrdr… Why am I a Raider fan? I was born in Oakland in 1959. It just wasn’t possible to be anything else :)

  • Dakota

Al stealing away the QB coach/play caller from Denver to be our HC….that would be great!!!!

Even if Bates gets the OC spot it would certainly make me more comfortable with keeping Cable as HC!

Chaos, one more question. Do you support or hate Al Davis?

    ________________________________________________

I can’t say I hate him, because I don’t hate people in general, but I hate what he does and what he has done. My support is for the team and what the Raiders stand for in this league. The Real Raiders. The grind it out and punch you in the mouth Raiders. The we are not going to take what the defense gives us, but take what we want Raiders. Thats what I am a fan of.

    Real Oakglenn Revenge,,,

You seem to get very angry & start name-calling when someone has an opinion that doesnt put a smile on your face. Look at the track record of NE vs the track record of Oak. for the past couple of years and you’ll see Pioli has done a better job with the Pats than Al has done with the Raiders. Not agreeing with Al’s moves over the past 6yrs doesnt mean they’re not a Raiders fan, I call it like I see it, and Im just as much of a Raiders fan as you,,,almighty Oakglenn, but that doesnt mean I’m ok with a lot of the dumb sh*t that’s taken place over the past years. Calm down buddy,,it’s not that serious.

Jeremy Bates, the next 32 year old HC of the Oakland Raiders!!!! This gets my Raider pride going! We might actually see some decent offense next season!

Where is everyone? No one cares about this Jeremy Bates news?????

You have never been right about one single thing.

  • edward teach

Well, if Al hires Bates as HC it just adds another page to the rivalry. I’m sure Bates is wondering why, if McDaniels could get hired to coach the Broncos at 32, why couldn’t he?

Might be fun to see those two duke it out. Bates would be out to prove Bowlen hired the wrong 32 year-old. Sort of like Shanarat vs. Al, only reversed.

Cold of Al Davis to sneak in Bates for an interview for HC while Cable is dealing with his personal matters, very cold Al.

Then again, you did fire someone on Christmas Eve right?

Just dug up that Bates spent time in Tampa also!!!!

Cable at HC with Bates as OC? Doesn’t take much to see the benfits. Bates is familliar with the blocking system. He also has some knowledge of the Raiders players.

Man, even Bates as OC sounds good. When Al fires Cable after the 2009 season Bates will get the promotion to HC.

I wonder if there are any coaches from KC we might look at? After the Pioli hire at GM, theres bound to be some key people let go.

We’ll find out about Pioli in a few years. With the Patriots he did find good fits for what was asked, but the system and their incesant cheating is responsible for getting the most out of some above to average players.

We’ll see if KC follows suit and installs more of a cheat their azz off Patriots mentality, or if Pioli can bring in some serious talent to contend with…on defense.

Don’t forget, everyone thought Mario Williams (TEX) was a bust, but blew up his second year. Dorsey may have needed the same to get up to NFL speed.

Seems like a decent kid, but hope he’s a bustamente.
