Wilson latest to go from ’08 spending spree

The Raiders search for a strong safety continues.

A little more than a year after winning a championship with the New York Giants and cashing in with a lucrative free agent contract with the Raiders, Gibril Wilson is looking for a job.

Wilson, along with wide receiver Ronald Curry and defensive end Kalimba Edwards, were released Friday as the Raiders began to clear the books for the signings of Nnamdi Asomugha, Shane Lechler and the still-unnannounced signing of Chris Johnson.

The Raiders must be at $123 million when free agency begins Feb. 27, and were reportedly $8 million under before the signings of Asomugha, Lechler and Johnson.

A team official confirmed the moves, which were listed as transactions on Raiders.com, with no comment.

In all, the cuts cleared $6.2 million in salary cap space.

Wilson was due a $2.5 million salary and had a pending roster bonus of $4.5 million. With a salary cap figure of $8.4 million and $7 million in pro-rated bonus money from his original signing bonus of $8.4 million, it the release cleared $1.4 million in cap space but will mean $7 million in dead money under the cap.

Curry, due $3.5 million in salary, had a $4.1 cap figure and $1.8 million of pro-rated bonus money for a $2.3 million savings.

Edwards, with a cap figure just under $3.2 million with $697,500 in bonus pro-ration, clears another $2.5 million from under the cap.

The Wilson dump is the latest black mark on last year’s offseason spending spree, which included huge deals with Tommy Kelly, trade acquisition DeAngelo Hall and wide receiver Javon Walker.

Wilson finished the season with 129 tackles, second on the team to Kirk Morrison, withfour passes defensed, two interceptions and 1.5 sacks.

Despite the numbers, he wasn’t nearly the in-the-box force the Raiders had hoped for when they signed him early in free agency.

Wilson, during the first quarter of the season, called playing for the Raiders a “soap opera” as the Lane Kiffin-Al Davis feud dominated the news. It’s conceivable the Raiders offered Wilson a chance to stay at reduced rate, much as they did LaMont Jordan in 2007.

Curry’s release comes as no surprise, and in fact he was told days ago a release would be forthcoming.

Edwards started 11 games for the Raiders after arriving as a free agent from the Detroit Lions. He finished with five sacks, but had none in the last eight games, missing the last two because of injury.

For now, tackle Kwame Harris, another 2007 acquisition, remains on the roster. Should the Raiders cut Harris, it would represent an $7.2 million savings against the salary cap.

Regarding trading down; not sure that Al would do it, and others have indicated his history with that.

What wouldn’t surprise me is our trading a high pick next year to one of the elite teams in order to get an additional first rounder this year, or trading a combination to someone to get an additional pick in the second.

  • sweep the leg

Al is like a six year old on Christmas, every draft day.

    Over-excited and impatient.

Not that he doesn’t get it right sometimes, but we have all seen him reach for the bright shiny object (Rickey Dudley).

If BHP’s dream scenario happens, it would put Al in his element though. He is very good at squeezing every bit out of a trade partner.

  • http://! Blackholepriest

Man I hope you guy’s are watching this post drill with Jon Gruden and you’ll see why this guy is sooo dynamic as a coach he just gets the juices flowing.

When I first saw him as a rookie HC he blew the hat off my head. He is as intense a coach as you’ll ever see. I’ll never forget standing on the sideline watching him and Gannon go at it. It was EPIC.

  • blackdeath29

darknight01 funny you said that about raji he`s had weight issue`s.and i know it`s just one game but he got manhandled at the senior bowl.

  • sweep the leg

    BHP

Can you give us the edited version of Gannon vs. Gruden?

  • darkknight01

Another DT that should be there in round 2 and maybe 3 is Terrance Taylor.

  • lefty12

Priest-the saying”al never trades down” just isn’t true either.he does it all the time, just not in the 1st RD.
Charlie-i think a lot of people on here agree with you to an extent.if we could get a top 2 OT-fine.or the best DE.the only thing i see is one person on here is pushing Raji and some of us don’t think he should be the pick.we feel there are other more glaring needs-for instance we only have 2 LBs,we cut our RDE and are shopping our LDE.our OL is full of questions.

  • Charlie

    Lefty
I would hope we could resign Brown as we talked about late last week.
I am all for however we can improve our line play.

  • darkknight01

    S&B,

I still have to say no to Raji with that #7 pick S & B.

  • Raiderken

Nobody worry about Raji. Facts are Facts. Al drafts measurables. 6’1″ DT don’t get drafted by the Raiders. Just ask Dorsey.

  • lefty12

Brown should be no more than a STer or backup.he was really one of our weak spots on Def.-more so than Kelly, and that is the point.people complain about Kelly,Warren, and Sands but seem to find a guy like Brown acceptable.

  • http://! Blackholepriest

Oh man! I was bugging Gannon was on the field in a key drive and the crowd was going crazy and Gruden was sending in plays that Gannon didn’t want to run. And he would curse at Gruden to hurry up and send in plays. Grduen would respond likewise yelling an screaming because Gannon was changing plays. He once said you run the funk what I tell ya’ and Gannon just went bullistic. To say the least the drive was successful but how it got there was must see once in a lifetime stuff for soemone like myself.

I would’ve loved to see Stabler and Madden. But that will always stay with me. But it really happens much more than anyone wants to believe. It’s not unusual but it was for me to be there and witness it.

Offensive line production for the last three games of 2008, projected over 16 games:

149 yards rushing / 4.6 yards per carry
That would have made us the fourth-ranked rushing offense in the NFL in 2008.

    421 pass attempts / 21 sacks
Would have been sixth in the NFL for fewest sacks given up.

Add some depth there and a dynamic, playmaking receiver and there you go.

I wouldn’t mind looking at WR Kenny Britt in the upcoming draft.

Not elite speed, but big body and good desire.

  • lefty12

Priest-Madden and Stabler were much more amicable.Stabler didn’t get all bent out of shape like Gannon-much more even keel.

  • lefty12

408-i don’t think we have to worry about that.

  • http://! Blackholepriest

Nnamdi21 the kid should lineup whereever there’s a weakness to attack the defense and we have to get him involved early to force the defense to matchup and then we run at them. DMC’s soph. season should be spectacular.

    That’s what I meant BOB a kid with that skill level no way he last into the 2nd rnd unless extenuating circumstances. Attitude, drugs…etc;

But these issues with Crabtree and Smith are good news for us because we’re at #7 if both drop then hopfully both QB’s jump into the top 6. Then we will be in fat city. The phone will be ringing… and I will be the first to know what the pick is. Unlike the rest of you idiots I have connections.

  • lefty12

that’s why one of my favorite stories was when the Raiders were playing,i believe the sea of hands game against Miami, and Stabler went to the sidelines and Madden was going ballistic and Stabler looked up at all us crazy Oakland Raider fans and says”man,John, the fans are sure getting their moneys worth today”.Classic!

  • Buttholeprick

I don’t know why you guys waste your time on this board? I know everything and should start my own blog to keep you idiots informed.

Patrick Turner is a beast. We need to get him and Crabtree.
    Maclin looked nice.

You see the difference between me and you scumbags is I know all there is to know about football and you priks don’t know squat. Of course I’ve been rubbing elbows with Al’s boys for as long as I can remember while you jokers still have to pay to get inside the colliseum. Losers!

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

Patrick Turner ain’t sh1t, no offense. Crabtree has a bum wheel and isn’t in the picture.

  • http://! Blackholepriest

I know Left, plus Kenny called his own plays.

But Gruden was part ways on the field and ready to take Gannon on, and Gannon was ready to oblige. For a second I thought something was going to happen and if there weren’t the type of vets playing with Gannon maybe something would’ve. It was crazy to watch.

We’ve gone the safety route just 3 years ago and the guy has panned out. We simply can’t risk it with the talent available at the top of this draft also our needs are not in the secondary that’s the only area that I’d say we’re very good.

  • Buttholeprick

The thing that really bugs me about you idiots is when I come on board what I tell you is gospel. Yet there are those of you that still doubt me. Admit it peons, it always comes back to bite you in the ass.

  • lefty12

Priest-exactly.that is why it would be nice to move down a few spots-right in front of the donkeys and maybe get the player they want-Rey-plus extra picks.although,i’ve noticed ,at least on Mayocks board that Cushing is now rated higher than Rey albeit at different positions.

  • http://! Blackholepriest

Left12, Cushing is one hell of a player. He may just turn out to be a better pro, who knows? But I would take either player and be extremely happy. I’m thinking the way things are going we are going to have our pick of 4-5 truely great players as far down as #7 and that’s what you want.

  • Buttholeprick

Well losers, I know as soon as I leave the board you idiots won’t have anything to discuss. Heading for a business dinner. Big Al might even be there. If I’m not too tired when I get home I might give you idiots the privelidge to know what I was able to find out. But if I were you idiots I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I hate to admit it guys but that little troll prick is right. I do sometimes sound like I am better than the rest of you. It’s just that when I was little my dad was always off visiting clients. He never had time for me. We never went to games together. He never went in the backyard to throw the ole pigskin around with me. This little troll made me look at myself in the mirror. And let me tell you what, I didn’t like what I saw. I turned out to be just like the old man. Reminds me of that Cat’s in the Cradle song by Harry Chapin. I apologize to all my brothers in the Raider Nation. I’m going to be a better Raider brother. Finally, I won’t be bragging about all the big people I know. I just hope that all of you, my brothers can find it in your hearts to forgive me for acting like such a jerk :-(

Guys like Ron Brace, Andre Smith, Jason Smith, Moala, Clay Matthews, guys like that will help our team the most.
