Raiders confirm Walker; Boller a possibility

Without getting into the specifics of the contract numbers the Raiders confirmed that Javon Walker has restructured his contract and will return to the team in 2009.

“This shows Javon’s loyalty and commitment to our football team,” senior executive John Herrera said Thursday. “He’s coming off a season where he was injured, but he’s been productive in the past and it’s not a stretch to think he could be back to that level.”

Walker originally had a salary cap figure of $10.833 million and was due a $5 million signing bonus and a $4 million salary.

Regardless of how the numbers were changed (or cut), the Raiders will be on the hook for at least $1.833 million against the cap _ the pro-rated amount of the original $11 million signing bonus. His salary will also count against the cap.

Market value aside, the give-back is believed to be significant, at a figure much higher than those of previous years which were accepted by other players, including running back LaMont Jordan.

In other developments, Charlie Frye wasn’t the only quarterback who has visited the Raiders of late. Former Cal quarterback Kyle Boller also paid a recent visit to Alameda.

Boller spent last year on the injured reserve list of the Baltimore Ravens. He started the preseason opener but hurt his shoulder in a later preseason game against Minnesota.

His days were numbered the moment the Ravens drafted Joe Flacco out of Delaware.

In 53 career games (with 42 starts) Boller has completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 7,846 yards, 45 touchdown passes and 44 interceptions.

Raiders quarterbacks currently under contract aside from Russell are Andrew Walter and free agent acquisition Bruce Gradkowski.

The Raiders had no comment about the availability of Terrell Owens, who still hasn’t officially been on the official league wire. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed to NFL.com that Owens has been released.

Sure, bring in TO and certainly JaMarcus will be afforded all that was not given Garcia, McNabb and Romo. When Zach Miller and McF are given more touches than TO he will then begin crapping all over himself and everyone else complaining he is the sole reason for life on Earth.

    456. T.O.’s brashness and obnoxious behavior could be excused when he was new to the League and still setting the world on fire, but your D.I. freind may have been onto something.

He’s had a decade in the League to mellow out and learn football is a team sport.

He is very talented, but if you get your azz dumped by the team that signed Pac Man AND Tank…

    Man, thats saying something…

I wonder if his release had anything to do with Walker’s willingness to work out a deal?

Suddenly, there where alot of older, but viable FA WR’s on the market.

    Harrison, Coles, T.O.

I know they’ve been working on it a while, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Davis had a n inside on what was about to go down…

He did get Nnamdi and Lechler done before the the NFl’s “surprise” gift of an extra $4 milly…

    So we need a center?

    Agreed…

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

    Nnamdi

Defensive tackle (DT) is a position on the defensive line in American and Canadian football. The defensive tackle(s) lines up toward the center of the field, and is flanked by the defensive ends. With the defensive ends, they comprise the defensive line.

Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. The defensive tackle typically lines up opposite outside shoulder of the offensive guards. Depending on a team’s individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, which also prevents offensive lineman from being able to get to the linebackers and successfully block them on running plays, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent’s backfield. The former is often referred to as “two gap” play, the latter as “one gap” play. Historically, one gap play was more frequently the role common for a defensive tackle to use as two gap play requires a defensive tackle to be rather large (most DTs who are good at two gap play are over 330 pounds) a development that has only occurred in the last 5-10 years of football. The concept of using one or both defensive tackles in “two gap” play was popularized on the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, who used Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa in this role, allowing their linebackers (especially Ray Lewis) to attack the ball carrier without being blocked by an offensive player. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it’s within arm’s reach. Other responsibilities of the defensive tackle may be to pursue the screen pass or drop into coverage in a zone blitz scheme.

  • S&B (Raji / Orakpo @ 7 because run d is 31st)

At some point the Raiders have to invest in that Defensive Line. The Raiders are the softest defense in the league. Teams ignore Nnamdi by not throwing at him and simply run the hell out of the ball.

This won’t change in 2009. Teams will opt to run the ball instead of throwing to likes of Nnamdi, CJ or the coverage LBs.

They will run the ball all day long until the Raiders demonstrate they can stop it.

Like John Madden said, in order to run the ball, you have to control the Nose Tackle.

Kirk Morrison doesn’t have that. And the 4th leading Tackler in the League, is not a so what!

I want to know what the hell happened from 06 to 07. In 06 we had one of the best defenses in the league. As terrible as we were that year, our D was in the top 5. Then in 07 we get some common sense, if nothing else, from Lane Kiffin on offense and our defense goes to hell. I don’t buy the theory that teams didn’t even try to score againnst us because our O was so bad. In the NFL every team tries to score every time until it is a blowout, or they can run the clock out. And it’s not like we getting blown out, our D was Boss that year. Yeah, we were 2-14, but we lost a lot of close ones, as usual. Sands was great that year, that’s why he got that fat contract. Kelly was playing DE considerably well at the time too, but he is a better DT then Sapp ever was for us, so if anything we should have improved. I just don’t get it. I hope Marshall can fix this BS.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the Raiders are actually conducting business like a pro football team this offseason?

What is the difference? It seems to me it is Cable.

Lance is gone, and now we have a grownup in charge. He is not just thinking about this year, but the years to come.

It appears the orginization is getting behind it. If we don’t win it doesn’t matter, but I am starting to have a glimmer of h- ho- ho- hope.

    There I said it.

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

That’s exactly what it was. The opposition scored and sat on the ball until they needed to score again.

  • blackdeath29

teams started running the ball down our throats and we did nothing about it.draft a run stuffer and get more physical up front on both sides of the ball.
    round one -raji
    round two-mack
    thats a start.

I’m down with Raji at 7 to play NT, Sands would be good as a spell guy, but he can’t stay in there more than one play before getting tired. I don’t think Mack will be there for us at 39. We will have to trade back up into the first or earlier in the second, but I’m not sure he will even get by the Steelers at 32…We need him though. I would be fine with Max Unger I guess, but we got Mack’s line coach, and it just seems right for him to be a Raider.

  • JHill

    ——————————————————-

It was absolutely the case. The bed and breakfast years you’re talking about, right? Teams would literally get a 7 point lead, and never throw the ball again. Look at the pass attempts against us the whole year compared to everyone else.

    interesting info on SFGate:

Apparently Walker, Gallery and Fargas all restructured their contracts before FA began. So all of this has been under wraps for a week. Al and the Raiders are really doing a good job with locking up their players at a reasonable rate this off-season and keeping their business in-house. The only question that remains is when are Terdell and Kelly gonna restructure? I have not seen the Raider machine running so smoothly in the last 7 years.

  • inonewordraider

I like Raji but don’t think he’s an upgrade over Kelly. @ 6’0 don’t think he’s gonna be able to put on enough weight and be an effective NT. Rey is a sure thing as far as run stopping LB which is a need and makes Morrison, and Howard even deadlier in the passing game. There’s not many Ngata’s and Sam Adams out there. If Raji could be Sam Adams/Ngata I’d say get him and your right our LB’s would look much better but he’s not.

  • foxraider

The raider’s do not trade down, when have they. unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good conversation going on tonight. I see a lot of quotes from Madden which is good because unfortunately, he was our best coach for the last…how many years? That’s right 30 years…
Anyways, its been uncharacteristically quiet this offseason.

Yeah…someone is in Al’s ear. but…who? This could be a sign of good things to come. Hopefully. Is it draft day yet?

  • KyleBollerFAN

Kyle Boller will make the Raiders instant winners. Good move.

  • http://myspace.com/tonyslymusic John

Kyle Boller will be an instant second string QB. JR is our guy. So this draft, I am telling you guys there are guys for the o-line in the second round, take crab at 7. Don’t f**k around anymore. Get JR someone to grow with, not TO, that will destroy him. JR is a kid. He doesn’t need some big mouth F’er like TO pointing fingers when he drops that fast ball. Did you see all of TO’s drops last year? I doubt he could even catch many of JR’s frozen ropes.
Tim Brown was a Raider his whole career (dismiss the TB thing) , he is class act and statistically the second greatest WR of all time.
Get Barnes and then draft a solid LT in the second. We also need a fullback, I don’t about Oren O’neil. However, Lorenzo Neal is out there, the greatest blocking FB ever. Would bust holes for DMAC.
DT- should have brought Grady Jackson back. If TK can play to his potential, maybe we can get a beast in the 3rd? I don’t know what’s left there in FA?? Anyone? Cool that Gallery, Walker and Fargas re-structured. Maybe the Raiders are making a move for chemistry?

  • http://myspace.com/tonyslymusic John

and BTW curry will be gone by 7, and if crab gets picked ahead of us, and we take jeremy maclin? It will be the second dumbest 1st round pick in Raiders history (Janikowski). Maclin is tiny and fast, we have higgins, we don’t need to surround JR with speedy midgets…he needs a tough go-to-run-after-catch-not-afraid-to-go-over-the-middle-guy…..crabtree is like Tim Brown, Hines ward and larry fitzgerald put together.

I think we were about $10 million under the cap before the Walker restructure and these others. If that’s true, we’ve got to have at least $20 million in cap space. Al is on top of his game.

  • Richard Bentley

Walker is often characterized as trouble. What I remember is he wanted to retire last year and give back his bonus. And now he restructures his contract. He’s coming across to me as a good kid who has been very mixed up. Maybe he can settle down this year and be productive. Would T.O. ever do either of those things Walker did? Are you kidding me?

  • http://ibabuzz.com Raiderkev25

Tommy Kelly already restructured his deal. Don’t know about Sands though. I really like what I’m seeing as an organization though, everybody is sacrificing right now for the better of the team. Great Javon Walker for restructuring and getting on board. Come out and show everybody what kind of player u can really be this year. I’m not saying we’re a playoff team yet, but we will definetly be competitive this year. Lets sign a vet LE Vonnie Holliday or Kevin Carter. Al SS Roy Williams please!

This is why Raiders will continue to suck big time by making stupid decision like keeping walker around. This guys is washed up and needs to be cut. But now they are saying that he is going to stick around for another season? Come on! how pathetic are we to keep this idiot. for those of u that think it’s ok to keep him, then ur not a real raider fan and don’t know how pathetic this guy is.
