Raiders confirm Walker; Boller a possibility

Without getting into the specifics of the contract numbers the Raiders confirmed that Javon Walker has restructured his contract and will return to the team in 2009.

“This shows Javon’s loyalty and commitment to our football team,” senior executive John Herrera said Thursday. “He’s coming off a season where he was injured, but he’s been productive in the past and it’s not a stretch to think he could be back to that level.”

Walker originally had a salary cap figure of $10.833 million and was due a $5 million signing bonus and a $4 million salary.

Regardless of how the numbers were changed (or cut), the Raiders will be on the hook for at least $1.833 million against the cap _ the pro-rated amount of the original $11 million signing bonus. His salary will also count against the cap.

Market value aside, the give-back is believed to be significant, at a figure much higher than those of previous years which were accepted by other players, including running back LaMont Jordan.

In other developments, Charlie Frye wasn’t the only quarterback who has visited the Raiders of late. Former Cal quarterback Kyle Boller also paid a recent visit to Alameda.

Boller spent last year on the injured reserve list of the Baltimore Ravens. He started the preseason opener but hurt his shoulder in a later preseason game against Minnesota.

His days were numbered the moment the Ravens drafted Joe Flacco out of Delaware.

In 53 career games (with 42 starts) Boller has completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 7,846 yards, 45 touchdown passes and 44 interceptions.

Raiders quarterbacks currently under contract aside from Russell are Andrew Walter and free agent acquisition Bruce Gradkowski.

The Raiders had no comment about the availability of Terrell Owens, who still hasn’t officially been on the official league wire. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed to NFL.com that Owens has been released.

I think the odds are Orakpo goes to either KC at No. 3 or Cleveland at No. 5.

I would definitely prefer him to Raji if we go defense at No. 7. If we do wind up signing T.O., you’ve got to wonder if Al is going to maneuver to try to go up and get Aaron Curry. He’s a physical freak, fills a need at OLB and can actually play too. Probably the most surefire pick in the draft. He should definitely go 1, 3, 5 or 6 though. No chance he’s there at No. 7.

    ======================================================
Chris In NY, Help me out here.

How does the signing of TO relate to AL moving up for Curry?

  • Gottagetaplaymaker

    K,

Have another glass of Walker kool aid. The dude is done, both physically and mentally. He is a bum and WHEN he gets cut will never play in the league again.

  • Raider O

    S&B,

You are high on Raji as I on Orakpo, and we both can make good arguments on why each one should be picked over the other, but we both agree that fixing our D is a priority. 31st against the rin for a few years is sad unless you’re the colts. :)

  • Chris in NY

    Len,
There would be no more need to consider a WR at No. 7, which I think is still a definite possibility despite the new Walker deal. Sure there are other needs, but I could see Al falling in love with Curry’s incredible ability.

Interview portion on the question of double teams etc

Sanchez: A big reason for the success of Boston College was the dominance of the defensive line. How did you and Ron Brace play off of each other?

Raji: Well, we told each other that if they were going to double team one of us then the other would have to make them pay. If they would double both of us then it was up to our defensive ends to make them pay.

    http://www.faniq.com/blog/Following-the-NFL-Draft-Prospects-BJ-Raji-Boston-College-Blog-20169

Sanchez: You could play many positions at the next level. 4-3 NT or 3-4 NT which are you more comfortable with?

Raji: More comfortable is not the right phrase I believe because I have played plenty of each to be familiar with them. Boston College has prepared me for any situation as far as playing on the football field is concerned, so whatever the teams wants me to do I will.

  • Toad

And since you probably have no idea what that means….

Gholston was the big talk of the town one trick pony DE going into last years draft. Jets took him early and he was a non factor.

The Raiders Dline is bad, not horrible, just bad. The OL is bad, not horrible, just bad. The Raiders WRs are HORRIBLE, the worst in the NFL. How could you not take one of the top WRs? If Davis has turned over a new leaf and allows football people to make the draft picks they WILL take Crabtree if there.

    =====================================================
The Young Raider WR’s are not bad, they are inexperienced.

Schillens, and JLH played very well at the end of the season when given the opportunity.

If you want to look at a stat sheet to criticize, I’d suggest that you look at what JLH and Schillens did the last few games, and extrapolate that over the course of a 16 game schedule.

That, too Me, looks pretty promising.

When will you mofos ever get over the money? The Raiders always find a way to work it. Who cares what someone was paid last year & the year before & the cap? Kelly is overpaid. So are most all players in the NotForLong. Alameda figures it out. Off we go. Albert Haynesworth is paid a quarter of the cap. So what? Do you think that Washington is going to go broke or be penalized? You guys worry more about salaries than Bruce Allen ever did.

I am glad we are in agreement on the run defense. I will be very pleased if the Raiders get Raji or Orakpo. Hence my title.

Good observation on the Colts run D a couple of years ago. Of course that team also had the best or 2nd best pass defense. And when you have the greatest QB in the history of the league, a ridiculous WR corps and O-Line….and then add that all of those offensive weapons have played in the SAME system for damn near 10 years…then you can afford to get by with a 31st run defense.

Some think the Raiders offense simply has to step up to make the D better. Well, the Raiders could walk to the Moon and they would still only be half way to where the Colts offense was that year!

Gholston was moved out of position. He was a DE that was moved to OLB in a complicated defense.

Orakpo will be lining up with a hand in the ground from the DE position.

Gholston will blow it up with Rex Ryan and time. They are going to keep it simple for him and bring him along.

What did they do when Cable started calling the plays?

And do You see them as having reached their ceiling in terms of potential?

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

No, I don’t have a problem with Raji the player, or his skills. It’s just that T. Kelly is the 2nd Highest paid DT in the NFL. Terdell Sands is highly paid also.

I would like the guy, I think he makes the most sense at #7. I’m just having problems seeing how it can be done.

  • http://ConnecticutRaider.com 860Todd Christensen’s Shadow(GO SHARKS & FREE DIRTY)

FPete, he would make a great addition, but we dont have a Brace, maybe we need him? Ok had a lot of help making numbers, there are reasons for that….

  • Nnamdi21

I’m thinking DE is looking like more of a possibility with the 7th overall…

DT just isn’t something they’re interested in.

They’ve got 3 serviceable DT’s to do what they want and thats rush the passer.

Warren’s a fine one gap penetrator and so is Sands.

Kelly’s the versatile guy who can jump inside or out and with his knee a year out from surgery, he should be better and more productive this year.

To fix the run, we need an MLB. Morrison’s a good LB, but would be better served strong side.

Discipline and coaching would help fix the over pursuit and bad angles, but a guy like James Laurinitus, who can be the 3 down backer Oakland desires si the most skilled, but not the best at the point of attack.

He won the Nagurski award as a Sophomore and had 121 tackles and 5.5 sacks his senior year and can cover.

He simply had a bad combine, especially in the 40, His puzzling 4.82 may see the once top 10 prospect slip into the 2nd round which would be a steal for someone of his caliber.

I see Oakland looking at a DE pass rusher maybe with the 7th overall…

  • inonewordraider

Get Preston and our line has good depth (Mcquistan, Green, Wade) all that would be missing on O is #1 WR. Get best avail in round 2 and let WR issue play itself out via competition: JLH @ slot w/ Walker, Schilens, Sheilds, & #2 pick vying for #1 & #2 receiver and O is set. Get Rey @ 7 to make LB our D strength and vastly improve Run D. Corners are solid. Only thing we’ll have to really hope for to be a contender (besides normal health concerns as opposed highly probable health risks we dealt w/ last year) would then be our safety play and our Dline (w/ no obvious NT or rush stopping DE avail thru FA or draft).

Is it June 1st yet? Terdell Sands and Gerard Warren will be making adjustments on their deals before June 1st or they will be cut. Bank on it. Also, the Raiders only have 3 DTs on the roster and with an average age of 29.5 yrs or so.

Davis is not paying Sands and Warren those salary figures. Probably already restructured.

Also, probably not making any roster moves until after the draft. There is no guarantee that Raji will be there and the Raiders 2nd rounder is probably going Center so Hood, Brace or Marks won’t be available at 3

The LBs are not as effective if they are shedding blockers all day. That requires a strong D-Line that occupies lineman.

A strong D-Line can make an average LB good.

A weak D-Line will make a great LB look mediocre.

Let’s not rely on “hope” to fix the D-Line. I guarantee that hope alone won’t stop Brandon Jacobs

    Big deal.

When the majority of those tackles are 5- 7 yds down field…

I can “scapegoat” Morrison because he:

Constantly takes bad angles to the ball.

    Over pursues.

    Makes bad audibles.

    Is weak at the POA

Only average at stack and shed (and thats being generous)

Gets caught flat footed and beaten on an island too often.

    Thats why…
