Crabtree is this year’s McFadden

Last year the most heated debate among readers of this forum was about Darren McFadden.

To draft, or not to draft?

Most people seemed to believe Al Davis simply couldn’t pass up the chance at such an explosive play-maker, and that line of thinking turned out to be correct.

Those who wanted the Raiders to look elsewhere cited the presence of Justin Fargas, Michael Bush and even Dominic Rhodes, who broke 100 yards rushing in the Raiders last two games of the season, and saw McFadden as a skinny-legged gamble with a questionable background.

Some joker even thought the Raiders would opt for Ohio State edge rusher Vernon Gholston because he was precisely the sort of workout warrior who looked great getting off the bus and would make quarterbacks go down, and go down hard.

(For what it’s worth, I was later told Davis liked Gholston a lot _ just not enough to pass up McFadden. Given McFadden’s promise, even with his injuries, and Gholston’s first year, it looks like a good decision so far).

Lane Kiffin later told everyone it was McFadden all along, although it’s hard to know what to make of that given Davis’ on-the-record statements regarding the truthfulness of his former coach.

Judging from some of the pre-draft debate already heating up, this year’s biggest debate will be whether or not to draft Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

Crabtree supporters believe he would be the ideal playmate for JaMarcus Russell and an instant contributor to a receiving corps that includes Johnnie Lee Higgins, Chaz Schilens and a hoped-for rejuvenation of javon Walker.

Detractors note he’s not as tall as advertised, is recovering from a stress fracture in his foot and is not as fast as Missouri’s Jeremy Maclin.

I checked out 20 mock drafts and 16 of the had the Raiders taking a receiver at No. 7. Eleven of them bought into the argument that Davis will go with speed and take Maclin, even if Crabtree is available. Five thought the call would be Crabtree.

Where were also two votes for Boston College nose tackle B.J. Raji and one each for Mississippi tackle Michael Oher and USC lineacker Rey Maualuga.

How some mock drafts see the Raiders using the No. 7 pick:

Todd McShay, ESPN: WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Sam Farmer, Los Angeles Times: WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Walterfootball.com: DT B.J. Raji, Boston College
Steve Silverman, NBCsports.com: LB Ray Maualuga, USC

Note: Missed McFadden’s brief talk with local reporters Thursday night when he pronounced himself fit and ready to go because of a prior obligation (I’m helping coach my son’s Little League team and it was the season opener). Will be out of touch much of the weekend but will try and post something if news breaks and time permits.

I hope they don’t draft Smith with the 7. The guy is out of shape, and that is a reflection of work ethic. When it comes to football anyway. Plus, eventhough he was able to do alright against college guys, in the NFL he would get rolled over, and be out of breath by the half. I would agree with the trade down idea and get Mack and a LT with our first two picks we would get from the trade. If there’s no worthy LT for a 7 overall that is…

I agree on Fargas I like his effort and how he runs hard but he runs hard and gets no where. Bush is just a beast, keeping him on the bench is a mistake although I did not like his attitude towards moving to FB when we needed help because of injuries.
    =======================================================
yeah, Bush’s attitude was weak. YOu do whatever you can for the team and move on. But he really should have been getting 20 carries a game all year. Pound him and force that extra man in the box and then throw jump balls to Schilens and hit JLH deep.

We are going to take Malcolm Jenkins @ 7! BET!!

    Malcolm Jenkins, FS, Ohio State
Malcolm Jenkins’ stock has fallen a bit. He ran a mediocre 40 (4.55) and his poor hips were exposed in the combine drills. Said Deion Sanders of Jenkins, “He’s killing himself.”

  • LechlerFan

Here’s what I see as the very best case scenario for the Raiders. First off, pick up a free agent left tackle! It doesn’t have to be Barnes, just get someone decent to bring depth and competition at the position. Also pick up Angelo Crowell from the Bills. Good, inexpensive player. In the draft, trade down with the Lions (this is optimistic AND fairly realistic, I think). They get our #7 so they can get their quarterback AND left tackle of the future. We get their #20 and #65 pick. We take Ziggy Hood at #20, Unger in the second round, Chris Clemons (SS) with our #65, a left tackle of Cable and Michalczik’s choosing at #71 (Kropog maybe?), Zach Follette (OLB) in the fourth, Philip Hunt (DE) in the 6th, and then do what it takes to get wherever we need to get (as long as it’s no earlier than the 6th) to get Brandon Tate (WR) if he’s still around. Maybe trade a 2010 6th rounder and our 7th rounder this year. Tate was having an amazing senior year before hurting his knee and missing the rest of the season. Sounds similar to Mike Bush and sounds like Al Davis. What do you think?

I agree slamming Bush into a defense 20+ times is going to do nothing negative for our offense, he will wear down teams. I wouldn’t mind seeing him and DMAC in a pro set formation with both on the field at the same time. Bush’s power and DMAC’s speed you wouldn’t know where it was going. They ran DMAC up the middle way too much last year, that is not his strong point.

Isn’t this how you build a winner?

Let’s take a small peek into recent history, shall we? Since the return to Oakland, the Raiders have compiled a 92-139 record. Take out the four years Jon Gruden was leading the way, and they are a dismal 54-113 since returning to their roots, not to mention being 24-72 over the last six seasons!!!
    The TRUTH hurts!!

Al Davis is the only “upper” management. Nothing has changed!

  • Oh contraire…

So then, Raccoon, it begs the question. Why are we sitting here talking x’s and o’s, players, draft picks, when this team is still being managed by the same guy who brought us 6 straight years of losing? Seems like a waste of time, to me. Jerry should start reporting on Al’s poor management. Start a movement to get Al to retire. And people in here should discuss that, too. Every day Al is running this team is one day longer we have to wait before we start to build an actual, competitive NFL football team.

  • Raider O

Al is the Owner/GM of the raiders, and he doesn’t think anyone can do a better job than he has. The man did a lot for the NFL and the Raiders. Remember with Al it’s always a gamble. He has his own ideas, and most are unique to say the least. Now some of his ideas work and when they do the results are great, but when they don’t you end up with 6 loosing seasons. Al is the Father of the passing game, vertical, short, and the westcoast offense. Before Al this was a run and deffend the run league, and look at it now. The Cards and their vertical attack, every person thought Al was crazy to be more interested in passing than rushing. Look at the NFL now, and whst it would have been without Al.
