Raiders score Thanksgiving, MNF games

The Raiders will play their first Thanksgiving Day game in 39 years in Dallas against the Cowboys and also will open the season on Monday night with a home game against the San Diego Chargers as the NFL announced its prime time schedule on its Web site.

The last time the Raiders played on Thanksgiving was on Nov. 26, 1970 at Tiger Stadium, when they jumped ahead 14-0 on a pair of touchdown passes from Daryle Lamonica to Fred Biletnikoff but lost 28-14 to the Detroit Lions and quarterback Greg Landry.

The last time they opened at home against San Diego on Monday night was the Art Shell debacle, a 27-0 embarrassment in 2006.

A Monday night opener at home against Denver last season was equally embarrassing, with the Broncos prevailing 41-14.

The opener provides Tom Cable to get the Raiders headed in a direction Shell and Lane Kiffin could not _ with something other than a nationwide face plant before a national television audience.

Sorry, I don’t buy it. I can’t stand Al Davis, but I don’t buy into him forcing the defense to play a certain way. I certainly think he has things he wants to see done, but I think D-coordinators have some wiggle room. I think Ryan sucked as a 4-3 DC, but I am actually rooting for the guy to succeed with a 3-4 in Cleveland…even though I trashed him in here.

Anyhow, just look at how Bresnahan used the LBs from 2000-2003 compared to how Ryan used them. Bresnahan utilized the blitz much more often. Coaching matters.

Hopefully Marshall will simply be a better 4-3 DC than Ryan ever could be since he was a 3-4 guy coming out of NE.

    It is our only hope.

John Marshall (born October 2, 1945) is an American football coach for the Oakland Raiders. He currently serves as a defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders.

Marshall, a coaching veteran of over 40 years, is mostly associated with coaching linebackers. He earned 2 Super Bowl rings during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, where he was an assistant.

Marshall coached linebackers for the Detroit Lions in 2002, where he was on the staff of Steve Mariucci. Marshall had previously served as defensive coordinator under Mariucci with the San Francisco 49ers in 1997 and 1998.

Raji would be an upgrade over Sands with the potential to be a star and Warren is a very capable backup DT. We still need a starting LB but will there be a can’t miss LB in round 2?

all: Please take into consideration that all teams are trying to get better. Every year people want to say what our record will be and who we should beat prior to the season. I believe Atlanta was one we should have won in august but they were a much better team when we played them.

Hopefully, we’ll have a solid draft and not so much the popular one that we’ve had the last few years. DT,LB,S

We seem to be doing well picking up lineman in the offseason. Maybe we can dump Green now.

Drafting a tackle would do more for our passing game than drafting Crabtree would. Give Russell some time and he will get the ball to the young WRs, Miller and McFadden and Bush coming out of the backfield.

With out hesitation, pass, drvie down the block, circle around, and bypass again…perhaps even wave while passing…and IM Crabtree that I am passing and to have his family look out the window and see me pass.

The kid just doesn’t standout…rather mediocre draft class at WR to be true.

Watch Kelly, Sands, Warren & Joseph stuff Tomlinson and shut down the Chargers running game. Watch Morrison, Howard & Brown cut off the outside and make sure tackles under John Marshall.

You guys think every player on our defensive front seven was terrible for the last 5 years? you can’t be that dumb, right?

coaching matters. watch Marsh teach players about gap discipline and how to tackle. thats why Cable wanted him. he’s an experienced DC. experienced in the 4-3 defense. most importantly, he’s a good teacher. not just a players coach that tries to play it safe by not blitzing or using prevent defense in the 4th quarter.

no matter what you guys say, we’re not 1 player away from a good run defense. It takes 11 guys. that is a coaching problem, not lack of talent on the roster

exactly. you’re half right. Crabtree DOES stand out. In fact he’s the only WR that does in this draft class. That’s why if Crabs is gone by #7, we stick with what we got at WR and continue to build the o-line

    Preach on Dakota! Testify!

Draft fever gets everyone all nearsighted and religious…they find our “saviour” and argue at length why we will/will not win without said player.

    Yawn.

Our D line is old…just give me young blood, fast blood, and a MIB that can bring it like Danny Clark once did…

Gruden rebuilt us in the trenches.

Cable appears to know as much.

I give a damn if the league isn’t scared of JLH and Schillens….but they damn sure will after this year.

Read post #561 again. If Crabs is on the board at #7 and the Raiders pass on him JaMarcus Russell should hold out.

no way should you put the team on this young kid’s shoulders with no talent at the WR position and a bunch of scrubs on the o-line

DTs drafted in the top 10 over the past 10 years …

Glenn Dorsey – Jury still out..poor talent around him

Sedrick Ellis – Played well his rookie yr…had knee injury

Amobi Okoye – Played well rookie yr, slumped a little 2nd, expected to be big contributor this yr

Dewayne Robertson – Bust?!? But no talent around him either

Johnathan Sullivan – BUst…Drug problems too.

    Kevin Williams – 4x Pro Bowler…Dominant force

    Ryan Sims – Busted out

John Henderson – Solid 6 yr. starter for Jags

    Gerard Warren – Bust!?!

Corey Simon – Pro-Bowl 1 yr…4 yr starter for Eagles, Eagles also franchised tagged him, but he refused to sign. Arthritis forced him out.

So, 4 out of 9 DTs taken in the top 10 has been a total bust. And unfortunately we traded for one of them. A couple of them are still getting started.

Also, consider the talent around some of these players too. The Raiders do have talent on the defense that can take advantage of a good DT in the middle. Kelly gets better, Morrison gets better and the new DE gets better.

Again, the Raiders have talent on defense. They just have two enormous holes to fill being a DT and a Base DE. I’ll give Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff a shot with the John Marshall.

If the Raiders can fill those holes I think that defense can get much better.

  • RaiderRockstar

putting Russell in the saddle with this WR corps is worse than the Titans surrounding Vince Young with Roydell Williams, Brandon Jones & Justin Gage. Or the Eagles surrounding McNabb with Jason Avant, Hank Baskett & Greg Lewis saying “git r done”

If it wasn’t the DTs and front 7,then why were we 31st against the Run. It can’t all be scheme!!!! The front 7 needs to be upgraded, except Kirk,TH, and TK.

  • http://WWW.CRANK.COM CRANK SMOKER

everyone has valid points about drafting their guy first. plenty of holes to fill and not enough draft picks to fill them with.

  • Dakota

I just hope we can be competitive at 7-9 or 8-8. With Cable and the castoffs o-line we presently have, and our difficult schedule 8-8 would be a miracle.

If we draft a decent T in round 1 and the best avail. NT/DE/LB in rounds 2 and 3, and Cable is more than just a coach who’s job was saved by the RB he refused to play, and Russell plays like he did in the final few games, then maybe 7-9!!!!

Hopefully Cable is done with the N.O., Baltimore, Atl, SD and NE type defeats like we had under him last season.

Those teams were still able to win games and get playoff runs. Both KFC and VY were able to take there teams to the playoffs with those receivers.

McNabb is a special QB, but they still made a run to the championship game and put points on the board.

Personally, I think Schilens and JLH have more upside than any receiver on those teams. Plus we have Zack Miller at tight end and two running backs that can catch the ball pretty well.

And Russell has more ability than VY or KFC for that matter.

The Raiders will run the ball more than Andy Reid would in 10 yrs.

    Baltimore Ravens
Chicago Bears – Lost it in the last game of season
    Minnesota Vikings
    Miami Dolphins
New Orleans – What is the highest drafted receiver on that team?

Fix the D-Line and O-Line and get the team to 8-8.
