Raiders score Thanksgiving, MNF games

The Raiders will play their first Thanksgiving Day game in 39 years in Dallas against the Cowboys and also will open the season on Monday night with a home game against the San Diego Chargers as the NFL announced its prime time schedule on its Web site.

The last time the Raiders played on Thanksgiving was on Nov. 26, 1970 at Tiger Stadium, when they jumped ahead 14-0 on a pair of touchdown passes from Daryle Lamonica to Fred Biletnikoff but lost 28-14 to the Detroit Lions and quarterback Greg Landry.

The last time they opened at home against San Diego on Monday night was the Art Shell debacle, a 27-0 embarrassment in 2006.

A Monday night opener at home against Denver last season was equally embarrassing, with the Broncos prevailing 41-14.

The opener provides Tom Cable to get the Raiders headed in a direction Shell and Lane Kiffin could not _ with something other than a nationwide face plant before a national television audience.

Don’t know if anyone said this but……

You guys been discussing how many reps of 225 A. Smith put up or Orakpo put up or Raji put up, but Satele put up 42 at the combine the year he came out. Dude was just throwing them up like they were 10′s on the bar. He’s a beast. Way better mauler than Grove.

    S &B,

I think you were a little gracious in your assessment of the OT’s taken. For instance you said Levi Brown-good player. He was moved to RT last year and gave up 11 sacks, the most in the leauge for a RT (3.5 more than Cornell). I would say he is well below average.

D’Brickashaw is a middle of the pack OT in his third year, was horrible his rookie year, and you give him a “good player”. I’m not buying it, he is nowhere near worthy of the 4th pick in the draft.

But definately OT’s have panned out better than the WR, just didn’t like your assessment of a few of them.
    ———————————————————

Couple of quick notes here: Levi Brown was moved to Right tackle only because Matt Leinert, the “supposed” starting Q of the Cardinals is left handed so Brown was drafted and set up to protect Leinerts blind side. The results, so far, have been mixed, but they did get to the Super Bowl with the guy, so how bad can he be??

Word from the Jets is D’Brickashaw Ferguson has also had mixed results. Not playing like an overall number 4 pick, but certainly not a bust either. Just my two cents on the subject.

Maclin may have the size of some of the great receivers, but he plays nowhere near as physical as those guys do. He plays like your typical “burner” looking for the outside to run past people.

He may develop this skill in the next level, he seems like a smart guy and a hard enough worker to do so. At this stage in the game, Crabtree is much more of a “polished” receiver.

    Oak,

Didn’t they move Brown to RT also because they signed Mike Gandy who out-performed Brown? Surely if Brown was a better LT, once they switched to Warner they would have made the appropriate move at tackle as well. Either way, he gave up more sacks than any other RT in the league.

Satele is more suited to the ZBS than Grove, Miami runs a man blocking scheme. So in essence we have taken two players who did not match their respective teams’ blocking style and swapped em. Both are 2nd rounders, both are 300 lbs. So you could call it a wash to this point. The difference is that Satele is 5 years younger than Grove and has not missed a football game in 6 years (including college).

Good post. I think Cable and the new OL coach from Cal did their homework on this guy. Plus, there Arizona Cardinals were interested in this guy too. So he has value.

Remember, Grove was drafted at a time the Raiders were “trying” to run a man blocking scheme.

This was a good smart pick. Trade a 6th rounder for a guy that has started every game of his career for a playoff team.

Oakglenn’s about to pull out the overhead projector…That’s what they do in Alameda when they need to get the point across.

  • Beeeecham

What Cable and Al have done so far on he offensive line has been exceptional and controlled. Two things we’ve lately not been known for.

And they’ve done so with young talent, depth and an eye on competition. Anyone crying the retread card doesn’t understand football. These are simply smart moves.

Henderson and Barnes – both under 26 – will battle it out for LT. Two young, hungry tackles who’ve both been starters in the NFL fighting throughout camp for one spot.

At center we’ve got another young, hungry former 2nd round pick who was considered one of the best rookies in the league and started every game of his 2nd season with a serious shoulder injury. Plus Satele will be in a system suited to his athleticism, instead of having to stand his groud against the bull rush.

Again, another guy out to prove himself. And he’ll have Wade and Morris breathing down his neck – two capable backups, without argument.

At RT the loser of the Henderson / Barnes battle will compete with the likes of Pears, McQuistan and what I hope will be a late round (4th, perhaps) offensive line rookie.

The guard positions are set with Gallery and Carlisle, but even Carlisle will be pushed by Morris and McQ.

And all of this being overseen by perhaps the greatest offensive line coaching staff in the league of Cable, Michalczik and Morgan.

What I’d like to see happen is we address the WR hole through free agency so we can devote our 1st 3 picks in the draft to defense. Toomer would be perfect, Holt perhaps a fantasy but you never know.

And I wouldn’t mind seeing us grab either Roy Williams or Dexter Jackson for some competition and experience at the SS. If we got Williams, he could also play that 3rd linebacker spot if Branch emerges the way we hope he will.

That being said, with our 1st 4 picks I’d do -

    1) Orakpo, DE
    2) Brace or Marks, DT
    3) Chung, SS
    4) Durand, G or Pat White, QB/WR

No. Brown was signed because he could play either side, but they moved him to RT not because he got outplayed, but to protect Leinerts blind side. Moving these guys from one side to the other is the kiss of death for the player, because every single thing is the exact opposite. Hands, footwork, viewing angles, everything. To me that was the problem with Gallery: they kept moving him from one side to the other.

Given the skill sets of our existing offense most people should conclude that WR is simply not a focal point.
A developing QB is enough of a reason. Baltimore led the league in rush attempts last year because of Flacco. You do not go out and get a first round WR to throw to so your franchise QB can get lit up.

Those that thought our Oline was improving late last year must be dumbfounded as to why Cable is going to potentially go with three new starters next year.
Our offensive line looked better because we did not ask them to do much. We will be conservative again next year. We will see alot more two TE sets with Bush and Dmac on the field at the same time.

Defense is much the same. Our line play is embarrasing. Do not expect Marshall to coach our Dline to respectability. We will draft for Dline improvement day one. Marshall is not a magician.

Without this focus in 2009 many on this blog will talk about how much talent we have but we do not win games. Many will site poor coaching etc etc etc.
Poor line play is now our biggest problem because we have not had good enough athletes at the line positions.
