Cable continues to add to his coaching staff

By Jon Becker
Friday, March 27th, 2009 at 1:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders moved closer to readiness for the upcoming season by adding three coaches to Tom Cable’s staff.
Cable hired Bert Leone as the defensive quality control coach, Rich Scangarello as his offensive quality control coach and Aaron Pelch as an assistant special teams coach.
Cable has hired 10 new coaches since he was made the full-time head coach by managing general partner Al Davis on Feb. 4. He also has reassigned five coaches to new roles this season.
In other news, quarterback JaMarcus Russell showed up for the offseason workout program Thursday. He reportedly missed the first part of the voluntary workouts so that he could be with his mother while she underwent surgery last week.
Cable started the offseason workouts Mar. 16. Players aren’t required to attend, but they are encouraged to spend as many days as possible working out at the team’s year-round facility.

Cable’s definitely in charge, Desiraider. All let him choose the elevator attendant, too. Between that and letting him choose his own..what is it again? Quality control coach? This is more control Al has ever given to a head coach! You can see Davis and Cable are working together. Later today Davis is expected to let Cable choose a new towel attendant. Sorry, BHP.

Defensive line prospects: Mobile ends outnumber tackles

    Defensive tackles
    1. B. J. Raji, Boston College, 6-2, 337
Despite constant double-team blocks, Raji was one of the most dominant defensive lineman in the nation last year with 42 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and eight sacks. Scouts were extremely impressed at the Senior Bowl practices, where Raji might have been the most consistently dominant player. Raji sat out the 2007 season because he didn’t meet academic requirements, but he came back with a vengeance in 2008 and seemed to be absolutely unblockable at times. Looks the part of Jim Croce lyric “…like a ‘Frigerator with a head” and should be able to help an NFL team increase the value of real estate owned by the nose tackle.

Perry, Stubblefield (used roids) and Maryland would not be dominant NT’s in today’s game. Guys are bigger and more athletic. Casey Hampton is not a dominant NT today. Do you seriously have to go into the archives just to find a guy 6′1 that could be a dominant NT? It shouldn’t have to be that hard. So is Raji really that one in a million guy? Is he really the next Jerry Ball? Raji is a UT. Same as Dorsey and Ellis who by the way were better prospects than Raji. You wanna spend your #7 pick on a guy who won’t start over G Warren when you could get Rey M, Cushing, or Crabtree that will immediately start? Or what about gettin a guy to replace Burgess next year like Orakpo, M Johnson, or E Brown?
    ======================================================
I’ll take the Pro-Bowl designation as proff of talent over the measurables you’ve developed.

Raji will start over Warren. That’s not even up for discussion. Warren is not a run stopper and he doesn’t eat up blockers or command double teams. Raji starts day 1.

Rey M and Cushing are not as highly regarded prospects so I wouldn’t take them as high. Also, linebackers can’t do s$#* without a D-Line in front of them. Show me a good linebacker without a good D-Line.

Crabtree is an equal pick. I just believe you build the trenches before going for luxurious picks on the outside.

As for Miola, Brace etc…Why would you take a 2nd or 3rd round talent when you can get a top 10 talent. That doesn’t make sense. Why not take Brinkley in the 3rd or 4th over Mauluaga?

Also, as for waiting until later in the draft. We’ve tried that with limited results:

Gerard Warren – Acquired for a 5th round pick from a division rival. Why would the Broncos help us????

Tommy Kelly – Undrafted free agent given big contract before showing anything.

Terdell Sands – Former 7th rounder wno was found playing in NFL Europe

    Richardson – 5th round pick

Scott – 6th round pick….although he has upside

    Burgess/Edwards – Free agents

The defensive line is the most neglected position on the team and is the reason why the Raiders have been the SOFTEST team in the NFL the last 6 yrs

The reason our D has sucked is because of the OFFENSE.

The D is built to cover and rush the passer.

If the O can’t stay on the field and put up points the D gets exposed. Expect thigns to get fixed once our O starts putting up points, NOT when we draft BJ Raji or any other high priced DT.

Although I think a better suited MLB would help alot.

    =======================================================
    Nnamdi,

When the Raiders were up by 9 pts against Buffalo with 6 minutes left, how did our great defense do there?

When Cutler threw the ball and embarrassed deAngelo Hall?

The Patriots didn’t exactly come out running the ball.

Neither did the Saints or Falcons for that matter.

And in all the other games sans the Texans, Chiefs games the defense got rolled over on the ground. Averaged 165 yds per game on the ground.

Last 7 games of the year Raiders averaged 21 pts scored

Last 7 games Raiders gave up on average 24 points

  25. S&B (BJ Raji / Jarron Gilbert @ 7 & 40 to fix 31st run D) Says:

The “outside-in” strategy never works. It results in getting pounded up and down the field.

Inside out teams have a much better track record.

The Raiders have no base DE

The Raiders have no NT and big question marks at UT

The pass rusher (Burgess/Scott) line up on the wrong side of the field

  26. vegas raider Says:

    Nmamdi,

The reason our D sucked is our offense?? Did you watch the New England game, or the Saints game, or the first Broncos game? Those teams could have scored 70 points if they needed to. When teams really needed to score against us, end of Miami, Buffalo and first SD game, they almost always did.

Our offense did stink at times, too, but the D’s fault was not the offenses, the fault was in the effort, talent level and scheme of our defense.

  27. S&B (BJ Raji / Jarron Gilbert @ 7 & 40 to fix 31st run D) Says:

Also another note on the defensive ends:

Orakpo, Everette Brown, Maybin, Michael Johnson are pass rushing DEs. They are not the base DEs the Raiders need.

Raiders need a DE like: Jarron Gilbert, Tyson Jackson or Mitch King.

  30. Charlie Says:

    Nnam

Got to agree with S&B on the defense.

I recoginize that by controling the ball your defense is not on the field.
Since we have focused on free agency to shore up the Oline, the Dline has to be addressed.

31st in run defense last year.
Have gotten progressively worse on run defense for five straight years.
Poor pass rush without the help of blitzing.
Most rushing TD’s given up by any NFL team in the last six years.
Worst record of any NFL team during the last six years.

We are getting crushed at the line of scrimmage.

New coaches, prolific skill guys like Moss or defensive backs who succeded on teams with real defensive lines have not helped.
Last year Walker,Hall and Wilson could not contribute because the lines in front of them were bad.

Our line play has been terrible.

It is rare that you find a team this bad for this long that has tried just about everything else and has spent the money we have. It is why the problem is obvious.
    Build the lines.

    Let the draft visits begin
The Raiders are scheduled to host Wake Forest strong safety Chip Vaughn, according to Scout.com writer Ed Thompson, making him the first known draft prospect to visit Alameda this draft season.

Put another way, it looks like the Raiders won’t necessarily go into the 2009 season with just the three existing safeties on the roster — Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff and Hiram Eugene.

With the release of Gibril Wilson, it’s plain as day the Raiders need to address the strong safety position. And, as much as the staff digs Branch, he lost his rookie season to a broken hand and busted shoulder. So, until he proves durabile, a backup plan would be nice.

Unlike Huff (their strong safety of choice in the 2007 draft), Vaughn comes with size befitting an NFL strong safety at 6-foot 2, 221 pounds. He’s projected as a third or fourth rounder by walterfootball.com, which lists him as the seventh-ranked safety on the board.

Last year, the Raiders drafted Branch in the fourth round.

Besides the 3rd,4th,6th picks in the draft and walk ons can further build the defense.
