Garcia signing official

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, April 6th, 2009 at 12:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are confirming the signing of free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia.

Garcia, 39, considered signing with the Raiders two years ago after a visit to Alameda, only to instead sign with Tampa Bay in part because he wanted a chance to start and realized Oakland’s first pick was likely to be quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

More to come later . . .

    Good sign & signing

  2. JB Says:

Now, trade Andrew Walter to Vikings or Redskins for 3rd round pick.

  3. Nebraskan Raider007 Says:

It’s about time. Much needed TRUE veteran. Can’t wait to buy a jersey!

  4. JB Says:

Now, trade that newly acquired 3rd round pick & package it with our second round and trade up for a late first round pick and get Mack, C, UCB.

  5. edward teach Says:

If we could have gotten a third round pick for Walter he’d have been gone two years ago. We’d be lucky to get a fifth for him.

The more likely scenario is he holds a clipboard for one more year and we wave bye-bye after that. That’s if he doesn’t get cut in camp.

  6. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Can you say: Quarterback Controversy! I have a bad feeling that Garcia is gonna destroy Russell in the off-season camps. Might light a fire under JMac, but that may not be enough to make him great.

  7. RaiderSerious Says:

I like having a competitor like Garcia on our team. It’s Great.

BAG: Garcia or not, Russell needs a veteran mentor

shoot. bring in Brad Johnson or Trent Green for all I care
    ——————————————————-
    RR,

I partly agree. A veteran mentor, not a veteran with the mindset that he’s still capable leading a team the SB. We want Brad Johnson or Vinny T. not Kurt Warner. I smell a QB controversy brewing.

  12. Dakota Says:

Look like a Jeff Garcia fan club will be forming in the Black Hole:

  13. JB Says:

IMO, given the right team (i.e. one with a good offensive line and decent receivers, Andrew Walter could be a real weapon. He does have a good arm with better than average accuracy. we’ve only seen him in the wrong environment and not where he can shine. There are teams out there as described above and if they want to get a QB who could start and help them win, he’d definitely be worth a third round pick. Laugh now if you will but I predict he will do well in the future.

  14. RaiderMac Says:

Who cares about Jeff Garcia as the backup QB? More importantly now we may get to see his wife, Playmate of the Year 2004 Carmella DeCesare, in the stands!

  15. edward teach Says:

Andrew Walter has a big arm, and he’s tall. He also has no pocket awareness, holds the ball too long, and makes bad decisions. Hasn’t exactly had the best attitude lately, either.

He couldn’t beat out Josh McCown or Daunte Culpepper. No way he’s worth a third rounder.

Interesting they decided to bring him in, but hey… he’s a Raider now. Hopefully he will help light a fire under Russell and serves as a better backup than Walter and Tui have been. No complaint here.

    On Johnson:

    Weaknesses:
Not an elite athlete…Height, weight and speed are all just average at best…Not an intimidating physical presence…Isn’t very explosive and lacks a burst…Is not real strong…Gives good effort but he won’t offer much in run support…Gets too high in his backpedal at times

    HMMMMMMMMM
Sounds to me like mike huff jr?!?!?!
but I love the moter they speak about!!!

    Oline for ‘09

would it hurt us to spent all of our draft picks on line men and a saftey…. maybe sign a vet WR and OLB after the final roster cuts?!?!?!?

WTF GARCIA WELL HE IS BETTER THAN VICK..and walter so if he knows his role “Back up/mentor” Then hell ya im all for a QB who can come in and help us win if the Foundation gets hurt!!

NOW we can Trade walter/huff and our pick move up and snag jason smith!!!! or for a bunch of 2nd and thoird rounders!!!

  27. vegas raider Says:

Interesting signing, Garcia is a hard-worker and super-cool under pressure, but he is known as a horrible practice player. Not bad habits or work-ethic, just his skills are better suited for improving on the fly in the game.

This isn’t the type of last ditch situation to win a championship for an aging, proven vet. Wonder if he wants to come home, and get into coaching in a few years. He won’t play much and he ain’t winning a ring here anytime soon.

  28. Dakota Says:

All kidding aside, I think Garcia will be a great backup qb in 09. If we don’t take Andre Smith @#7 we might need him. I am much more comfortable with Garcia coming in over Walter, Garbagekowski or Tui!!!

  33. Lynn from Snot Says:

A serious upgrade over the past years Plus He and Grabowski can reminisce playing for Chuckie

  34. RaiderRockstar Says:

In that Panthers game where Rashad Baker missed a tackle and D Williams ran for the 69 yard TD. that made me sick! The defense was playing well in that game too. Aside from that 1 big play we held Williams/Stewart to 92 yards on 25 carries. 2 sacks and 4 INT’s from the defense. (2 of those picks from Baker)

    ***

Like Tim Brown once said about P-Buck. “Rashad giveth and Rashad taketh away” haha

DMC didn’t play that game either. Nnamdi held Steve Smith to 1 catch for 9 yards. DANG!

  35. SnB Defense Says:

You Russell bashers are cold full of *****

1st: JaMarcus Russell has a total of 16 career starts.

    Other QBs in their development:

Drew Brees finished his 3rd season (2nd as starter) with 57% comp 11TDs / 15Ints and a rating of 67.5

    Matt Hassellback after 3rd season (1st as starter) 54.8% comp 7TDs 8Ints 71 Rating

Eli Manning after his 2nd season (1st as starter) 53% comp, 24TDs 17Ints 75 Rating

    Peyton Manning 1st season 56.7% comp, 28TDs 28Ints 71 Rating

Troy Aikman after 2nd season as starter 56% comp, 11TDs 18Ints 66 Rating

    John Elway didn’t become a 60% passer until his 11th season…1st season as starter 47% comp, 7TDs 14Ints 55 Rating

You guys need to relax on the Russell bashing. Talk of drafting Mark Sanchez and the rest of that B.S. Russell is progressing as well as a QB can with circus that was 2008.

Also consider that he had Kwame Harris and Cornell Green for most of the year and Lane Kiffin calling plays. Justin Fargas and his 3yds a carry and DMAC/Bush on the sideline. Playing with Cury & Lelie for most of the year.

Russell in his last 7 games

    61% Conpletion, 1,134 yds, 7TDs 4Ints 88.5 Rating

Give the kid time. You guys talking about drafting Sanchez really don’t know football.

  36. ELWAYs TEETH Says:

Post # 14 Great Post, you hit it DEAD ON. I just want to see his wife in the stands. She’s worth double whatever The Al is paying Garcia.

  37. VT Raider Says:

I mentioned Johnson but I do not want him. He sounds like trouble. I much prefer Chung. Bob Sanders doesn’t have the greatest stats, but the defense just plays better when he’s in there. Our D has enough players standing around waiting for the next guy to make a play. Chung sounds like he could be that kind of player.

We desperately needed a vet back up QB. It’s a good move. Russell can learn a lot about desire from Garcia. I think Garcia was brought in to light that fire under Russell.

  38. OAKlifer Says:

maybe not GM but a coach that is more than just a puppet… sometimes to get players to buy in to a system the coach actullay has to belive in the roster and the system as well…its obvious whos made the “football decisions” in the last couple years and it sure as hell isnt the same one doing it this year thats all…GO COACH CABLE.. =======================================================
Intangibles? He missed a workout to be with his mother for surgery. He’s been in the building working hard. Cable has mentored the guy on what it takes and Russell is following through.

Young players lead by example. His first year he had a front row seat at the Kiffin/Davis debacle. Forget DeFilipo, Kiffin was the QB coach. He was busy looking for another job and the owner was busy documenting infractions.

His left tackle couldn’t block, his wide receiver was skipping two-a-days during training camp because he wanted to retire, deAngelo was getting cut, the two pro-bowlers were plotting a trip out of town and the Quarterback had to plead with the Head Coach to get DMAC in the game.

And Russell still came through at the end of it.

His progress to date is where other great QBs are. Considering Russell was a junior with no help around him on the field or off the field.

The Raiders have one of the better QB situations in the league with Russell. Next year will be the breakout.

The trade will allow the Raiders to improve their O-line with the top pick while also sending a package, either Bush and/or draft picks to the Browns for Braylon Edwards and Sean Rogers. Stay tuned.

The required amount of film study, the work habits, dealing with reporters and other media/community commitements. Russell needs to learn those things first hand from a someone who has had to work hard to make in the NFL. Having that type of hunger and competitor in the locker room can only be a positive.

    Read up y’all: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/sports/football/Cable-Laying-Into-JaMarcus-Getting-Actual-Results.html

Quote from the article: “Coach Cable doesn’t feel Russell applies himself enough.”

If JaDonut continues in not applying himself, no matter if he can hit the 880 from midfield at the coliseum – on the fly, then this team is in trouble. The greatest weakness this team has had in the last 5 years is “leadership.” In the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s this team was full of leaders. Now?

Besides, which one of you guys have a job and an employer that would allow you to skip work in order to see momz and hold her hand during surgery?

The whole thing sounds like a bad case of PR to me. Why was Cable blasting JaDonut if JaMar-Bust had permission to be wit momz during her bunion removal?

Bottom line is that this team desperately needs a leader…..until this kid shows me he is capable of doing just that then we are in some serious trouble.
