Garcia signing official

Share

The Raiders are confirming the signing of free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia.

Garcia, 39, considered signing with the Raiders two years ago after a visit to Alameda, only to instead sign with Tampa Bay in part because he wanted a chance to start and realized Oakland’s first pick was likely to be quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

More to come later . . .

…Russell can learn a lot about desire from Garcia….

Hope you are not talking about the desire Garcia feels when looking at a poster of Brady Quinn!

  • VT Raider

Funny Dakota. But you can’t deny that Garcia has desire for playing football. I think on a mental level he can push Russell. It’s impossible on a physical level.

  • You know Dakota, I’ve heard the the biggest homophobe tend to be one themselves. Is that right? Stop with the Jr. High stuff man.

  • In that panthers game Delome had a passer rating of 12

Garcia >>> Russell. Garcia will be the starter come week 1. (Cable isn’t scared to bench people who don’t perform, and Al needs to win now) Raiders will go 10 and 6.

  • M Lonetree

Unless they are absolute morons no other team is going to trade any pick or player for Andrew’sMom’s kid. He’s a third stringer at best.

  • VT Raider

I would take whatever we could get for Tui or Walter. If we can’t get anything, cut them loose. They’re doing no good. Can’t see how either of them can push Russell to improve. All they can accomplish is to make Russell look better.

    stranger things have happened.

  • Don’t perform? let the kid play with a decent line and a full roster of WRs then we can start to judge his performance.

  • AZ Raider

You guys are out of your minds if you think there will be any sort of contaversy. Russell is the starter… period.

59…. that looks sad but tru and i’m not oppossed to winning now…But however i am oppossed to hindering Jrocs come upins……hmmmm 10-6…..

Sorry if the signing of Jeff impresses me about as much as the signings of Rick Mirer and Wade Wilson and Donald Hollas and Vince Evans and…list keeps on going. Now if it was the ghost of Jerry Garcia, that would be a reason to get happy.

  • We might get a 5th or 6th rounder for Walter, which would be nice considering we lost our own 5th and 6th in various transactions. Walter is just a wasted roster spot at this point. Let’s get something for him.

Give the kid time. You guys talking about drafting Sanchez really don’t know football.

Agreed. Russell hasn’t even come close to reaching his full potential. Here’s hoping Hackett, Tollner & Garcia can expedite the process

    ====================================================

It’s the “intangibles” I think many of us “haters” are worried about. Missing “voluntary” workouts as the “leader” of the team? That doesn’t sound like a young man serious about his role as the leader of this team.
    =======================================================
Intangibles? He missed a workout to be with his mother for surgery. He’s been in the building working hard. Cable has mentored the guy on what it takes and Russell is following through.

Young players lead by example. His first year he had a front row seat at the Kiffin/Davis debacle. Forget DeFilipo, Kiffin was the QB coach. He was busy looking for another job and the owner was busy documenting infractions.

His left tackle couldn’t block, his wide receiver was skipping two-a-days during training camp because he wanted to retire, deAngelo was getting cut, the two pro-bowlers were plotting a trip out of town and the Quarterback had to plead with the Head Coach to get DMAC in the game.

And Russell still came through at the end of it.

His progress to date is where other great QBs are. Considering Russell was a junior with no help around him on the field or off the field.

The Raiders have one of the better QB situations in the league with Russell. Next year will be the breakout.

  • OAKlifer

I know WAAAYY off topic… but hey O-line in ’09

Peterson has rushed for 3,101 yards in two NFL

seasons, winning the league rushing title last season with 1,760 yards.

The former Oklahoma star’s career rushing average per carry is 5.2 yards. He has rushed for 22 career touchdowns, catching 40 passes for 393 yards and one score
    8**********************

IS this kid the next Bo Jackson??!?!?!?

  • This team actually looks like they have a GM making deals to better the team. What a concept.

I read a rumor that we are talking to the Bengals about trading for Chad Johnson. It says our 2nd rounder and Michael Bush. If we do that, it will set us back. We need Bush, maybe our 2nd rounder and Fargas?

Jerry drops back in the pocket as he drops acid, looks his first 2 receivers off and decides to take off. Jerry Garcia is known for his improvising.

The big deal is that every Raider QB since Gannon has walked around with a hang dog look, waiting to be put out of their misery. Garcia has desire. Russell needs to learn that.

    RaiderDogg,

You have a point. Too much improv can be a bad thing. But I think Garcia does that because he can’t see over the line and gets surprised. Either way, he thinks fast on his feet.

That was a dumb comment M. You’re better than that

My source tells me that the Garcia signing signals that the Raiders are looking to deal Russel on draft day to Detroit for all their picks in this years draft. The Raiders have been happy with the development of Gradkowski and look to make him the starter after mentoring under Garcia for one or two years. The trade will allow the Raiders to improve their O-line with the top pick while also sending a package, either Bush and/or draft picks to the Browns for Braylon Edwards and Sean Rogers. Stay tuned.

I do not believe there is any competition for the starter’s role and I don’t anticipate that Garcia will be an everyday mentor. However I believe he is being brought in to be a solid backup and to show JaMarcus through example what it takes to be an all Pro professional. The required amount of film study, the work habits, dealing with reporters and other media/community commitements. Russell needs to learn those things first hand from a someone who has had to work hard to make in the NFL. Having that type of hunger and competitor in the locker room can only be a positive.

    Thanks Dakota….

    Read up y’all: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/sports/football/Cable-Laying-Into-JaMarcus-Getting-Actual-Results.html

Quote from the article: “Coach Cable doesn’t feel Russell applies himself enough.”

If JaDonut continues in not applying himself, no matter if he can hit the 880 from midfield at the coliseum – on the fly, then this team is in trouble. The greatest weakness this team has had in the last 5 years is “leadership.” In the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s this team was full of leaders. Now?

Besides, which one of you guys have a job and an employer that would allow you to skip work in order to see momz and hold her hand during surgery?

The whole thing sounds like a bad case of PR to me. Why was Cable blasting JaDonut if JaMar-Bust had permission to be wit momz during her bunion removal?

Bottom line is that this team desperately needs a leader…..until this kid shows me he is capable of doing just that then we are in some serious trouble.
