Raiders not in Madden’s fulltime plans
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 16th, 2009 at 7:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.
John Madden told Bay Area News Group-East Bay columnist Cam Inman Thursday he had no plans to become a consultant for the Raiders, nor was he planning on becoming involved in ownership.
“No, uh uh,” Madden replied when asked if he’s interested in becoming a consultant for the Raiders.
As for succeeding Davis and owning the Raiders: “No, uh uh. As an owner, no. As a fan, I’ll be able to go to more games.”
Which doesn’t mean Madden won’t have some influence. He considers Davis one of his closest friends and the two will have more time to talk. It’s just that with Madden turning 73, it was a pipe dream to think he would ever get into the fulltime grinder of NFL management _ especially since all his expertise was as a coach.

: Purdue defensive tackle Alex Magee visited the Raiders on Thursday, as did at least three unidentified offensive lineman, a team source said.
Magee moved to defensive end as a senior but he’s more of an interior lineman. His size (6-3, 298 pounds), versatility and room to grow reminds are seen as plusses.

Sharks!
April 16th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Madden is just too old.
The guy that Al Davis was referring to as a “front office/personnel hire” is going to be Steve Wisnewski.
April 16th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Mark Sanchez at 7. What’s it worth to ya? Hell, I’d even take some of the Donks picks and smile all the way to the bank with more of our needs filled.
And if you want a good laugh, check out Fat Bill Williamson’s chat today where he predicts the Chefs make the playoffs again before the Raiders.
April 16th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Al Davis at 79 and Madden at 73 does not fix the long term problem. We just need a successor for when Al hits the dirt.
April 16th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
1- Orakpo/ A Smith/ Raji/ or Maclin. In that order
2- M Johnson/ Ramses Barden
3- Bruton/ Vaughn
4- Dorell Scott, Sammie Lee, Khalif Mitchell, or T Taylor.
7- Russell Allen, or Ty Sales.

Magee scouting report is disturbing.
It days: he is weak against the run, and can’t shed blocks. Doesn’t demand double teams.
I pass on him.

I would be much happier if they just upgraded the current location once the A’s leave the facility. Upgrades including an onsite Raiders/A’s/Warriors/East Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame/Museum.

April 16th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Why not Dogg? Hell, they redid Soldier Field and left the columns in place. It could be done, and would be a lot cheaper. Besides, all the chatter about shared stadiums like the New Meadowlands stadium doesn’t take into account the lack of available and affordable land in the NY area. Niners and Raiders should have their own stadiums.

2. Some will be good players, some won’t.

Updated Mock from the SportingNews War Room:
MOCK DRAFT: ROUND 1
PICK TEAM PLAYER POS SCHOOL
1 (1) Lions Matthew Stafford* QB Georgia
The Lions might really be debating whether to take a QB or not, but it makes sense for them to grab Stafford because they have some offensive talent and without a good QB you have no chance.
2 (2) Rams Jason Smith T Baylor
Orlando Pace is gone and Alex Barron has never become the OT they hoped he would, so they jump on the super-athletic and highly competitive Smith to help protect Marc Bulger.
3 (3) Chiefs Brian Orakpo DE Texas
The Chiefs will play a 3-4 with 4-3 looks in 2009. Orakpo is better against the run than Everette Brown, so they grab him here to help them get pressure on the QB.
4 (4) Seahawks Eugene Monroe T Va.
Walter Jones is getting old and is coming off micro-fracture surgery, so Monroe makes a ton of sense to start at RT in 2009 and eventually at LT.
5 (5) Browns Michael Crabtree* WR Tex. Tech
With Kellen Winslow traded and Braylon Edwards the next to go the Browns need a receiver for Brady Quinn (or Derek Anderson) as a go-to guy.
6 (6) Bengals Everette Brown* DE Florida St.
The Bengals spent big money trying to upgrade their pass rush without success, so they jump on the draft’s most polished pass rusher to help them improve.
7 (7) Raiders Aaron Curry OLB Wake For.
The Raiders are not desperate for a linebacker, but Curry has the speed Al Davis loves and has the tools to be a productive three-down player.
8 (8) Jaguars Jeremy Maclin* WR Missouri
The offense was held back by a lack of quality receivers in recent seasons. Maclin gives them a big-play receiver and returner.
9 (9) Packers B.J. Raji DT Boston Coll.
Even with rumors flying about Raji, the Packers need a nose tackle to make their 3-4 work. Raji is the only elite prospect in the draft.
10 (10) 49ers Rey Maualuga ILB USC
Having decided that Alex Smith is their QB, they grab the big, physical and explosive Maualuga to play inside next to Patrick Willis. This would give them the best inside linebacker combo of any 3-4 team.
11 (11) Bills Robert Ayers DE Tennessee
Their defense struggled to pressure quarterbacks with try-hard ends, so they jump on Ayers. His versatility and pass-rush moves give him the tools to be highly productive.
12 (12) Broncos Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma St.
Rumors say they tried to trade Tony Scheffler because he is not a blocker, which makes taking Pettigrew here a no-brainer. He is an elite blocker with solid receiving skills.
13 (13) Redskins Andre Smith* T Alabama
Offensive line help is critical, and Dan Snyder loves grabbing the big name. They gamble on Smith, who would have been the top tackle if he had handled the spring well.
14 (14) Saints Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio St.
Their secondary was a disaster in 2008, so they grab the tall, versatile and athletic Jenkins to help solve their issues.
15 (15) Texans Brian Cushing OLB USC
They cannot pass on the chance to grab Cushing, who brings versatility and athleticism to the linebacker corps.
16 (16) Chargers Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells* RB Ohio St.
LaDainian Tomlinson’s days are numbered and Darren Sproles is not a starter. So they grab Wells to become featured back in 2010.
17 (17) Jets Mark Sanchez* QB USC
They must find quarterback, and Sanchez looks like a star who is used to dealing with a lot of media. He should be able to handle the New York media.
18 (18) Broncos Eben Britton* T Arizona
(from Chicago) After hitting a home run with Ryan Clady last year, the Broncos get Britten to give them two top tackles for the next decade.
19 (19) Buccaneers Fili Moala DT USC
Jovan Haye is gone, and Moala brings them an athletic, strong and competitive defensive tackle to replace him.
20 (20) Lions Peria Jerry DT Ole Miss
(from Dallas) The Lions want to grab a defensive and won’t have to debate over which one after Moala goes the pick before. Jerry is strong and athletic. He will be an immediate upgrade.
21 (21) Eagles Michael Oher T Ole Miss
Tra Thomas is gone and they need a tackle, so they gamble that they can coach the inconsistency out of Oher.
22 (22) Vikings Darrius Heyward-Bey* WR Maryland
They really wanted Oher, but with him gone they grab this big receiver to upgrade their passing attack.
23 (23) Patriots Knowshon Moreno* RB Georgia
Fred Taylor is near the end and Laurence Maroney can’t stay healthy. So they grab Moreno, a big, strong inside runner who also has great hands as a receiver.
24 (24) Falcons Larry English DE Northern Ill.
John Abraham is a great pass rusher. Putting English on the other side would let them bring pressure from both sides.
25 (25) Dolphins Clint Sintim ILB Va.
They want to upgrade at inside linebacker. Sintim is a big, physical inside force who would be a solid fit in their scheme while playing next to Channing Crowder.
26 (26) Ravens Kenny Britt* WR Rutgers
They need a receiver to go with Derrick Mason. Britt gives them a tall, explosive playmaker who can take advantage of Joe Flacco’s passing.
27 (27) Colts Evander ‘Ziggy’ Hood DT Missouri
They must upgrade their rush defense. Hood gives them the athletic, disruptive interior force they like and should be able to start as a rookie.
28 (28) Eagles Jared Cook* TE S. Carolina
(from Carolina) L.J. Smith left as a free agent and they don’t have a big-play receiving tight end to replace him, so they jump at the chance to get Cook, who is fast and explosive.
29 (29) Giants James Laurinaitis ILB Ohio St.
After signing Michael Boley to help at outside linebacker, they jump on Laurinaitis. Antonio Pierce is getting old and likely will be a free again soon.
30 (30) Titans Alphonso Smith CB Wake For.
They want a receiver, but there isn’t one good enough to pass up on Smith, who fills another big need.
31 (31) Cardinals Donald Brown* RB UConn
This is a need pick. Edgerrin James is getting old and Tim Hightower is best suited to be a backup/change-of-pace back.
32 (32) Steelers Tyson Jackson DE LSU
Age is catching up with their defensive linemen, and they have little in the way of young backups. They jump on Jackson, who fits their scheme.

April 16th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Don’t be surprised if we end up with either Percy Harvin, WR, from Florida, or Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, from Maryland, as Davis will want to give Russell more weapons in his breakout year. This is a “must” BE PRODUCTIVE YEAR for Russell. Either put up or shut up. Crabtree and Maclin will not be on the board and Davis isn’t going for any lineman, defense or offense, although that would be in the best interest of the team. Davis has his own one track mind in that area…speed, speed and more speed. Additionally, after getting burned with the Gallery pick, it will be a long, long time before Davis takes a lineman in the early picks of the first round…it’s not going to happen, Jack, or dude.

Very few teams if any would have passed up the opportunity to draft Russell in the number one spot. Without an excellent QB, you’re not going anywhere in the NFL. Everything is geared off the OB, including leadership!
Lineman come and go, they don’t lead teams to Super Bowls ad they’re surely not the team leaders. I’ll stick to my guns and eat my words if Davis picks any lineman in the first round…this year or in those to come.

True, Cancun, true. A team in need of a QB would’ve been hard pressed to pass on JaM at 1. But look at what happened to our laser armed leader last year when he had even mediocre pass protection at the end of the season. He improved dramatically. No question about the leadership aspect, but a good line (O and D) can hide a lot of shortcomings. It makes or breaks a team. One lineman isn’t the difference maker, but a good line is. Just ask Trent Dilfer, Kerry Collins and other so-so game managers who’ve benefited.
I think Cable gets his way and we get the Cadillac if available. The enthusiasm at the presser this week was a little bit too eager to start working with his new toy, but we shall see.

We should have done just that, pass on Jamarcus. We should have taken Calvin Johnson in the 1st and Trent Edwards in the 3rd in ‘07 and Ryan Clady in the 1st and Matt Forte in the 2nd of the ‘08 draft. We get a solid leader a QB, a Stud Receiver, a stud RB to compliment Bush, and on of the best ZBS LT in the NFL who should have been a pro bowler in Clady.

With some coaching continuity, an improved line, and another year under his and our current receivers’ belts, I think he’s going to impress this season.
Here’s your chance on the Pee-Pee 408.
April 16th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Watchin the highlights of the running plays that were meant to discredit our DT’d did quie the opposite actually. On many of those plays it was the fault of the DE and the LB’s not doing covering their assignments in the running game. On more than one occassion a DT would get pressure up the middle forcing a cut back only to have a DE and a LB not be there to make the stop.
On one particular play against the Patriots about a minute through the video, everyone held their assignments only to have Asomugha whiff on the tackle at the LOS and Sammie morris get an extra 35yds.
April 16th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Nevermind 408. Getzlaf is going bald at 24 anyway.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Flattop
I love J-Rock, i just feel that CJ was the best player that year by far and Trent Edwards was a ver good QB that could be a Pro Bowl caliber player. He had no protection at Sanford and if he had he would have been a 1st round prospect instead of the third rounder that he turned out to be. I was lobbying hard that year for CJ in the 1st and trent edwards in the third or Troy Smith in the 4th
April 16th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Sharks need to go with the Black Alternate for game 2.
Raiders need to trade down.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Im upset later Nation!!!
April 16th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
I know why weren’t they wearing the Black jerseys…. Ufck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 16th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Whats this news about a revolution? Got any links?
April 16th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
That makes sense Severe, but if he was undervalued in college b/c of no protection, what do you think would have happened with the same circumstances in the pro game? Calvin’s cool with me, but it seemed like we would have been putting 22’s on a Ford Focus if we picked him, know what I mean?
April 16th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Wow. The Sharks couldn’t even score. How pathetic. Its not surprising. The Bay Area doesn’t know how to finish the fukin job. I mean seriously…Bay Area sports is such a disgrace.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
I wanted CJ too.
I remember my mock: lol
1- CJ/ J Rus
2- DT A Branch or OT Tony Ugoh
3- Trent Edwards/ JLH
4- M Bush
April 16th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Flattop,
But Trent still put up decent numbers…and Jay Cutler was undervalued in the draft for the same reason the year before. If you the Calvin Johnson pick as a putting 22’s on a Focus fine with me but it would make your Focus look a whole lot better until you saved enough money to get your “Cadillac”.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I wanted Trent and CJ, or JRus and JLH.
J Russel has more talent and potential than Edwards, but Edwards is Smart, a hard worker, and he has descent talent.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Both J Rus and CJ are freaks for their positions.
CJ: a WR who is 6′5 230, and ran a 4.3+
He loves to compete, remember the 40 thing.
JR: a QB who is 6′6 270, ran a 4.8, and has a Cannon
He us accurate on the deep ball, and can buy more time with his feet.
Compared to J Elway by Al Davis.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Severeraider post #83 is a very good post. That would have been a good draft. But IMO we needed this JaMarcus badly. He will show you why in the coming years when Trent is constantly on IR and he’sleading the league in passing. If you put Trent and CJ on the same team yeah you can’t argue that. CJ is an unbelievable force and will be for years. But Russell could be ne of the most dominant QB’s the league has ever seen if they continue with what they’re doing as far as laying a foundation for him. They are in the process of rebiulding him as a QB from top to bottom technigue wise. If that comtinues for the next few years his fundamentals will be second to none.
Russell’s natural talent is enough to get him through his career and maybe a few probowls, but what he’s doing now will make him very sound technigue and that IMO makes his talent go to the top of QB’s in this league within the next 2 years. If we put the talent around him on offense but especially on defense he will be in some big games and he will be the difference.
I’ve said it before the Matt Ryans can be gym rats all they want but they cannot get talent they don’t possess. Russell has phenomenal talent if he puts the work in WOW! WOW!. He could be in the top few QB’s to ever play the game. Any organization would give anything to have that. Well we have it. Elway IMO took too long to learn to read defenses and use his smarts instead of his considerable physical tools. It took Mike Shanahan to get him to use those. Russell is getting that early in his career.
We have a lot of young talent around him. Now it’s imperative that we finish the Oline and get the talent we need so that is not an issue anymore. The defense is critical so that he’s not always coming from behind. He can just bury teams with his awesome talent and the players around him.
I think the future is very bright if we finish this process. However Crabtree is a very seductive option….you’ll have no complaint from me if he’s the pick.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Raider O
The only difference is that witha team crumbling around him and being doubled and tripled teamed and no QB, CJ is still one of the best WR’s in the league.
With and up and coming team and a top 10 rushing attack but no WR’s Jruss is average at best.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
David white was on path to the Draft on the NFLN.
He said the Raiders would draft Crab if he is there, or A smith.
They also listed the Raiders Needs as:
WR
OT
DT
S
OLB
In that order.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Raider O
Just got back from drinking a couple margaritas, and listening to some Latin sounds, Santana style. the chips and salsa were good too.
Back to your thoughts on JR. Ya, if this dude can just take a double jump into that “super-stardom” that potentially is within his reach…WOW, we would be on our way to an awesome year. You know the drill…playoffs and such!
April 16th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
You know it really bothers me that the overwhelming opinion on Russell is that he doesn’t want to put in the work. Since he’s been with Raiders I can honestly say that I haven’t heard that come from any of the Raiders staff. I’ve heard just the opposite. But I have heard that he sisn’t understand how much work he needed to put in to be the starter for his franchise. Since that has become known to him he hasn’t resisted any of the coaches recommendations. Now obviously there is something they are concerned about but I don’t think it’s his work ethic it’s his partying and hanging with some of the what they fellis the wrong element.
That is IMO what Cable is alluding to rather than his work ethic. Russell suddenly rich and very young is not always putting him self in the right situations and the raiders are trying to get him to cut way back on that. Hopefully they’ll get through to him and he’ll see that is as much a part of his responsibility as the work he’s putting in. They don’t want any incidents such as an arrest or him in the wrong place at the worst time.
He has to realise he is the face of the franchise in many ways. How he carries him self is critical. And he must be willing to accept that. Cable is working hard to get that accross to him. Russell himself is not is bad kid but what about the guy’s he hangs around? Very dangerous.
April 16th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Looks like most of you dudes have checked out for the nite.
Lets hope that a clone of Merlin Olsen walks into the Raiders training camp and gets a try out. In the mean time, good nite and better tomorrows. Go Raiders!
April 16th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Okay Raider O, I’m at work and supposed to be working so I have to make this quick. Here is my mock draft, and mind you that Curry falling to us at 7 is whishful thinking.
1. Andre Smith – lt or Aaron Curry – ilb
From trade down with Denver:
1. Michael Oher – ot
1. Darius Heyward-Bey – wr
From trade down with Piladelphia:
1. Vontae Davis – cb/fs
1. Percy Harvin – wr
2. Ron Brace – dt
3. Rashad Johnson – s or Chip Vaughn – s
4. Zack Follet – olb or Jonathan Casillas – olb
7. Ryan Purvis – te

I guess I’ve been out of the loop too long. Maybe too many sandy beaches, aqua-mint green waves and beautiful women walking the beaches in their thongs and shaking their sweet things.
I hope your wrong about JR hanging out with the wrong crowd and with dangerous dudes as well. First I’ve heard of it. Hopefully it’s been blown out of proportion which is likely after the Javon Walker incident which still bogs my mind. Walker has serious, big time issues. I hope
he gets cut…you know…like ASAP.

I would like to see that Percy Harvin or Darrius Hetwood-Bey catching some rockets from the Ja-Mar.
Agree with you there.
April 16th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Beach if you’re not local you wouldn’t knw but as I said hopefully he’s slowing down. As you might have guessed I’m worried because it’s not his work ethic Cable is concerned about it’s when he leaves the complex. Every young player who’s instantly rich has his drawbacks. Some more than others but with young black athletes and these posse’s it can be a real peoblem for them. Everything they’ve wanted they now have and they want to enjoy it. Well in most cases it puts them in harms way. He no different he’s young and newly rich, women, booze friends and fun can be addictive to a young 23 year old. Getting them to see why they shouldn’t is extremely difficult.
So we’ll see……it’s the only thing that I can see that is a real threat to his career. I remember trying to talk to Darrell Russell and Aaron Wallace about the same thing and it went right over their heads just totally clueless. Well what happened to them scares the hell out of me when I think about Jruss. He has no idea how much he’s at risk.

408, glad Al worshipers hate me. It’s when those morons like you that you should be worrying.
24, I said right wing, redneck rubes seem like they’re going to start a revolution. Didn’t say they were. Did you watch the coverage of these retarded tea parties yesterday? Some scary trailer trash out there. They’re acting like Obama had the Supreme Court cancel a recount that would have given McCain a victory. McCain got walloped. Wasn’t even close. I think these morons are simply in denial. The people spoke. Those dumb hicks can stand out in the street and yell all they want. I hope Obama takes their names and taxes all of them 90%. Wouldn’t hurt him one bit politically. They’re make up for jack shyt far as the electorate is concerned. Tax ‘em, Barack. Call it reparations.

April 17th, 2009 at 4:48 am
Call me one crazy old broad, but there is no way in hell I see Curry falling into our laps. Then again, crazier things have happened, and I certainly wouldn’t bitch if he did.
On Percy…I’m not too keen on his questionable character. He has great burst and acceleration and home-run speed, which Al covets, but I keep reading bad things about him…talks down to his coaches, does not take well to hard coaching, has a “supreme sense of entitlement”, does not have a likable personality and tends “to rub teammates the wrong way”, and his durability is questionable. That’s a lot of cons in my book. He also, according to one draft book, “identifies with the 757 Virginia Beach neighborhood that produced LT, M. Vick and DeAngelo Hall…elite but troubled athletes” Is this the type of player we want in the locker room, yet alone, on the field? He sounds to me like some primadonna punk ass mini version of TO, which I don’t see helping JRuss or any of the other younger players. It sounds like we finally have some camaraderie on this young and talented team and I just don’t think he would be a good fit. I think there is better options out there. We shall see what happens, but it is not the #7 pick I am worried about as whoever we get there will help us…it’s the 2nd and later rounds that I am a little edgy over. Nonetheless, let’s hope they have a good draft and we come out not only helping JRuss but the D-Line too! Have a great day, Nation and…..
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 17th, 2009 at 5:27 am
MaddenRaider… post #103… very nice. What’s hilarious about it is that the trailer trash is all worked up about something that’s probably going to BENEFIT them; they’re just afraid of the Communists lol.
It’s the fat cats that are going to have to start paying their share, so they drum up the propaganda and the unwashed fall for it every time.

It’s been quiet so far. The news on Madden wasn’t surprising. Would be cool to see him this year at the games…although he would probably be heavily guarded, or come through without no one knowing.

besides scott and derrick we dont have any kind of pass-rush, and derrick is gone after this year, plus theres no garauntee he can be productive this year, gilbert and jay could man one side while scott and derrick the other, raji thrown in the mix at dt would help out greatly

g’morning Nation,
what?? Curry in our lap? I don’t see it, but if he’s available that really creates a dilemma, albeit one you don’t mind having, i.e. LB’s hardly our strongest need but man how do you pass on this guy? This is where Al scares me…we NEED limemen and WRs.
Raider75 that is the best mock I’ve seen yet(post 19), lol. Of all the thousands of predictions by experts and otherwise, NO one can really say anything more accurate than that!
April 17th, 2009 at 6:24 am
Dirt Lot: yeah I did …
take your choice of Raji, Orakpo, Oher or Maclin
April 17th, 2009 at 6:25 am
the Lions signed Ronald Curry.
does that mean they’re not going after Michael Crabtree?

…others not so much
April 17th, 2009 at 6:31 am
Curry signed with Detroit? Hmmm…still no one to throw him the ball that he can drop. is Pep still there?
April 17th, 2009 at 6:35 am
you know what guys? i’ve been thinking …
I keep saying how I’d love to trade down, but this morning I’ve changed my mind
If we trade with Philly I want Ron Brace & either Oher or Mack.
Odds are if we trade with Philly that Al Davis will draft WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and CB Vontae Davis
this would be a terrible draft IMO
April 17th, 2009 at 6:36 am
we picked up the Lions garbage QB & WR two years ago in Josh McCown and Mike Williams …
now they’ve picked up ours in Daunte Culpepper and Ronald Curry …
seems only fair, right? haha
April 17th, 2009 at 6:41 am
Yeah, I guess you’re right, Rockstar. The difference between McCown and Williams is that at least McCown had heart and wanted to compete and was a team player. He just plained sucked as our QB (AZ he was decent). Big Mike…geez, your old recruiter and coach gave you one too many chances and still f’ed up. Where is he now?
April 17th, 2009 at 6:42 am

Maine: Morrison, Howard, Brown (the starters) are all in the final years of their contracts, not to mention depth guys like Alston & Williams…
If Aaron Curry is there, I think we have to take him.
I don’t think he’ll be there, but how many times has a LB been selected in the Top 6? it’s very rare

Funny he asks me if I ever “heard of a strip club”. The last place I want to go is one of those joints, I dated a lived with a dancer for almost a year and a half. Been there done that.
I didn’t realize just how messed up Todd Marinovich was. He use to take acid and do his pre-game warmups, all stoked because of the “sweet sound-systems playing the Stones”. What a clown.
April 17th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Why would Philly trade us their 2 number 1’s for the 7th overall? I’ve heard this, don’t get the logic.
***
because then they could get a tackle like Andre Smith or Michael Oher instead of a guy like Eben Britton or William Beatty.
They could also draft a WR like Crabtree or Maclin instead of a guy like Britt or Nicks
you see? higher quality players…
playoff teams like Philly are only a few players away from taking their division crown.
the Raiders have many needs and only 5 draft picks to address them.
thats why a trade makes sense. plus the point value chart has this as a pretty fair swap.
of course all this is moot if Philly trades for Ocho Stinko, Boldin or Edwards …
April 17th, 2009 at 9:02 am
I happen to agree. Why would Philly give up two 1st for an unproven WR when they can get Bolden for a 1st and a 3rd? Or trade for Edwards. Not to mention going after Burress or Holt for free.
April 17th, 2009 at 9:02 am
RRS…
I still dont believe it would happen, it would help us way more than Philly to do such a deal… so still why should they..
April 17th, 2009 at 9:03 am
if I was Philly i wouldnt trade fore Boldin either, but Braylon would be a much better catch..
April 17th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Vegas: I think Todd Marinovich, Darrell Russell, Darnell Bing and Justin Fargas scared Al Davis away from drafting anymore players from USC.
Since 1990 those are the only players we’ve drafted from there. Don’t forget Mike Williams drafted by the Lions who didn’t pan out here …
I’m pretty sure Rey Maualuga won’t be the pick!

It seems that some of the recent Defensive guys from USC have done much better than the Offensive guys. Tatupa and Troy P are Pro-Bowlers, I think Sam Baker, Lendale White and Steve Smith are the best USC has come up with on offense (with flops like Mike Williams, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and a few others.)

thats what ive been saying. draft defense first and the raiders could still get a quality wr in the 2nd round. robiski or britt can probable be had there. but defense sould be 1st priority. then get chung in 3rd round if still available.

The Jets are trying to trade up from their number 17 slot to get Sanchez.
That could be an option for us come draft day.
I said this yesterday by the way because of a profootballtalk article.

Also, look at the top receiving leaders last year. In yards 4 of the top 5 were 1st round picks, with 3 of them being top 5 picks (Fitz, A. Johnson, C. Johnson.)
So if you want the top end players, you got to spend top picks for them. If you want above average, you spend 3rd round picks. I’m tired of “above-average” players, I want elite ones.

April 17th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Think about which is better: Crabs/ M Johnson or Brace. Or Raji/Britt or Barden in the first two rounds.
Crabs is no doubt the top receiver in the draft. Johnson or Brace might be the best one or two at their positions.
Meanwhile, Raji is the top DT prospect, but it is no where near as clear-cut as Crabtree, Crabtree has been a top 10 pick the last two years, Raji’s stock soared at the Senior Bowl. Meanwhile, Britt or Barden might be the 4th or 5th best prospects at the position.
April 17th, 2009 at 9:45 am

i hope the Raiders dont go top- heavy with the offence, cause the defence aint scaring nobody…i wouldnt be dissapointed if they didnt draft one offensive player…

Meanwhile Fitz took his team to the Super Bowl, and R White lead his team to the playoffs. Steve Smith, the only non first round pick in the top 5, helped win the division and get a first round bye.
Let me ask you, how many games did our WR’s dominate last year? The reason I ask is, our O-line dominated three games last year (Bucs, Texans and first Chiefs game) and the last few years we are always in the top 10 in rushing. Our O-line still needs some upgrades, and I think we addressed it in the off-season, but our O-line was DOMINANT at times last year. Now the D-line, that’s a completely different story……

Andre and Robiskie… no doubt!

IMHO if the nfl implements a rookie salary cap that would cut down on busts… all these guys are getting millions of $ on what they did in college.. some guys ,not all only care about the payday.. thats why we have so many bust imo i think you have to look for guys that love the game with a passion no matter where they are ranked on kipper big board

Absolutely. Don’t get killed on the ground, get timely turnovers and get the ball to your play-making receivers, that’s been the recipe of the last 4 Super Bowl teams. Steelers and AZ O-line’s are well below average, D-line and WR’s are among the leagues best.

defense wins games. and, games are won in the trenches. we drafted and top qb & rb the last 2 years. now its time to build our lines. we have done ok with OL in free agency. we need DL in the draft. we will never win if we are still last against the run. we need someone like raji or ayers and then a safety like chung. best case would be to trade down and then get both safety, dl, then wr. would love to get ayers, chung, robiski.

Chiefs, Lions and Bears also drafted OT’s in the first round last year. Sam Baker was like the 6th tackle taken. Every year there is a bunch of tackles taken in the first round, let Mario see where he is at and than address it next year if it is still an issue. I would rather have the best WR or the best DT or the best DE, instead of the 3rd or 4th best OT at #7.

Players we should targey, in this order:
1- J Smith/ Monroe/ Curry/ Orakpo/ Crab/ A Smith/ Raji/ Maclin
2- DHB/ M Johnson/ H Nicks/ Jarron Gilbert/ Meredith/ Brace/ Moore/ Chung/ Ramses B/ Robiskie
3- Marcus Freeman/ Bruton/ Vaughn/ J Williams
4- Clinton McD/ Dorell Scott/ Sammie Lee/ Khalif Mitchell/ Sidbury/ T Taylor/ Z Follett

The Raiders seem to be really pursuing another TE, to compliment Miller. Given that Tony Stewart is primarily a ST’er and getting up there in years, and Darrel Strong is a practice squad scrub, and per Cable we will be seeing a lot of 2 TE sets this year. I am starting to think that one of Cable’s 4 positions of need may very well be TE, rather than WR. With two TE sets, that is one less WR that needs to be on the field.
Perhaps Cable wants upgrades at LT, SS, TE and DE. We could see a draft like this, which might surprise some:
1. Andre Smith or Oher, depending on availability
2. Michael Johnson,Robert Ayers,Jarron Gilbert,Paul Kruger, Tyson Jackson
3. Jared Cook or Chip Vaughn (if Cook is there still)
4. Reshard Langford or Anthony Hill (based on 3rd pick)
7. Best Available LB or DT

Crabtree is more like 6′2 with his cleats on and especially with his long arms and long wingspan!
I agree with what David White said yesterday on Path to the Draft, that the Raiders will look at Crabtree if he is there….if he isn’t there at #7, then they should look at Andre Smith. If none are there and if Sanchez is still there….then a trade down is a must IMO.
At least they had a guy who actually has a Raider beat compared to that slap head they had on last year Ray Ratto…who knows nothing of Raider football.

15,
Do you play Madden on PS3?
If you do, how do you import the real college players for the draft?
April 17th, 2009 at 10:10 am
15yo15,
I will meet you half-way, Defense at #7, best WR available round 2, than more D and maybe one O-lineman in the 4th.
We have negleted the WR position for too long, IMO, and it caught up to us. There is no “luxury” positions in the NFL, some are more important than others (like D-line), but no doubt the trend in the league now is to stop the run, get close to the red zone and throw up jump balls to an elite WR (Moss, Plax, Holmes and Fitz all caught 4th quarter TD’s in the Super Bowl on “jump-ball” type plays.)

LMN,
About Madden and Al.
Madden was a LB coach in a time were people like him didn’t get a chance at a HC job.
His look, attitude, and behavior was limited to one team. The Raiders.
Madden is an empire now, and he gives mist of the credit to his best friend Al.
Al takes care of his players and coaches, if he likes them. Always did, and will keep on doing it.
Al helped Otto with his hospital bills, and he took care of a lot of players that the NFL couldn’t take care of.
April 17th, 2009 at 10:24 am
John Madden retires? John Madden is never going to retire from football. The guys lives it.
He is going to have SOME kind of a roll with the Raiders.
At 73 he’s not going to be the GM but he’s going to end up with some kind of advisory roll with the team he loves simply because he can’t stay away from football.
Madden is going to be sitting up in that box with Al. He might even end up representing Al at certain meetings. There is no way that Madden gives up football.
Pat Summerall was recalling the time that Madden sat on his mike just before a Superbowl. Summerall was the perfect guy to pair up with Madden because he just let John do his thing.
When Madden paired up with Al Michaels, there were many times when I wished Madden would just sit on Michaels. Al was a pretty good baseball announcer but when it comes to football he just won’t shut up
