Now I’m an Andre Smith guy
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 9:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.
I’m waffling enough to be a politician, although I offer the defense of an ever-shifting situation.
I took Alabama left tackle Andre Smith on “Chronicle Live” Friday night on behalf of the Raiders, after going with Boston College run-stuffer B.J. Raji for ESPN Radio only to switch to Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree when told he had become available.
In a mock draft conducted by host Greg Papa, with media types (announcers, beat writers, radio hosts) doing the selecting for their own cities, the top six selections went like this:
1. Detroit–QB Matt Stafford, Georgia. (Hope you made the right call, Lions, you just spent $41.7 guaranteed to make it happen).
2. St. Louis–OT Jason Smith, Baylor. Rationale: The perfect longterm replacement for Orlando Pace.
3. Kansas City–OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia. Rationale: Chiefs would love to trade down, but if not, Monroe, along with 2007 draftee Brandon Albert, gives Kansas City two long-term solutions at tackle.
4. Seattle–WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech. Rationale: Jim Mora has a man-crush on Crabtree. Honest.
5. Cleveland–QB Mark Sanchez, USC. Rationale: Coach Eric Mangini loves him (there we go with man crushes again) and wants to start his regime with a QB of the future. The Browns would trade Brady Quinn and play Derek Anderson until Sanchez was ready _ probably in 2010.
6. Cincinnati–LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest. Rationale: He’s the best player available, the Bengals would be stunned he was available, and Marvin Lewis would want him over Andre Smith, although not by much.
That left me at No. 7, choosing for the Raiders. My first choice is to trade back, depending on the deal. Short of that, my choices are Andre Smith, B.J. Raji and Jeremy Maclin (who is probably the Raiders consensus picks when you total up all the mock drafts).
I gave Tom Cable his “Cadillac,” believing he could sell Davis on the idea that they just got what might be the most talented player in the draft and a guy who could anchor the left side of the line for the next decade.
Why would Davis go for it?
For one, once upon a time in 1997 he wanted Orlando Pace, and even maneuvered to the second selection to get him, only to have the Rams and Dick Vermeil trade up to No. 1 and get him instead.
Considering who was available, Smith would be the player who would seem to have the capacity for “greatness.” By that, I mean a chance to join the pantheon of great Raiders as a true dominator. Don’t think that doesn’t carry some weight.
So I took Smith, and the rest of the draft went like this.
(Because it was a one-hour show, the NFL in this case consisted of 10 teams _ no time for the remaining 22).
8. Jacksonville–WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri. Rationale: After failing miserably with first-round picks Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, plus free agent Jerry Porter, the Jaguars need help.
9. Green Bay–DT B.J. Raji, Boston College: The perfect player to plug into the middle of their new 3-4 defense.
10. San Francisco–DE Tyson Jackson, LSU; and OT Michael Oher, Mississippi: No, the 49ers don’t really get two players, but the panel guests were Matt Maiccco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and 49ers insider blogger Kevin Lynch of the Chroncle, and each got to make a pick.
I’d give their rationale, but since this is a Raiders blog, I’m guessing you don’t care.
My back-and-forth selections illustrate how the process becomes once you get past the first few picks.
Here’s how I’d rate the Raiders picks, going to the first name on the list that was available at No. 7.
1–Crabtree
2–Monroe
3–Smith (either one)
4–Raji
5–Curry
6–Oher
7–Maclin
What about Percy Harvin?
Profootballtalk.com floated the idea of the Raiders taking Florida wide receiver/running back Percy Harvin, taking on a tone of blind speculation.
I’ve since heard there are some NFL types who are buying into the possibility as well _ that the Raiders are considering Harvin with the No. 7 pick despite the alleged positive marijuana test.
I’m putting that into the same category as the Darrius Heyward-Bey rumors. I’ll believe it when I see it. With Darren McFadden already on the team, what would be the point of drafting Harvin?
McFadden’s duties go far beyond being a running back. He’ll also be a slot receiver, put in motion, and be used as a chess piece in hopes of isolating hin one-on-one. Harvin would only cut into some of those duties. Doesn’t make sense.
What about Boldin?
With the Cardinals lowering their asking price, why wouldn’t the Raiders offer the No 40 pick overall as well as may be a player or two to acquire Anquan Boldin?
Here are a few reasons:
Boldin is no diva, taking hits and dishing them out. He’s one of the toughest receivers in the league, and therefore older than his calendar age of 28 (He’ll turn 29 in October).
Boldin wants huge money _ Larry Fitzgerald type money. The kind of money that can throw a salary structure out of whack.
Boldin is a run-after-catch receiver, rather than a downfield receiver. It’s not a pass JaMarcus Russell throws particularly well (yet), nor one which is preferred by the owner.
Boldin would not be playing for the wide-open spaces Arizona Cardinals. He’d be playing for the Raiders, which under Cable are planning to be a predominantly running team with McFadden, Michael Bush and Justin Fargas.
His opportunities to catch passes will be fewer, because rather than “long handoffs,” the Raiders will really hand the ball off to one of their three backs.
At the 11.7 yards per catch Boldin had last year, if he were to catch, say, 60 passes for the run-oriented Raiders, he’d gain 702 yards. Not exactly the numbers of a wide receiver who wants to be paid among the NFL’s elite.
I’m not saying it’s a horrible idea, just that it’s not as much of a slam dunk as it sounds.

April 24th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
1. O-line
2. WR
3. ILB
3. From Burgess trade DE
4. SS
Enjoy.

Jerry with all of his mock drafts is having the same problem that all of us have had a difficult time with, who is a sure pick in this draft, and there are no players regardless of position that teams have said “I got to have him”.
This draft is like a school dance in the dark, all the girls look good.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Curry should be first on your list jerry. But he won’t be available at #7 anyways so I guess it doesn’t matter.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Andre?
April 24th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
I’m all in brother. I agree 100 percent.
What concerns me is what happens if Andre isn’t there.
Anyhow, we can all hope.
Great job brother.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
I think both QB’s are going to go in the 1st 6 picks and that bodes very well for the Raiders.
It’s going to push Aaron Curry down to us and what will we do?……
April 24th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Priest
As you said here a few times, Rickey Brown can be a very good player without the steep price that Curry will have. Most fans think very little of Brown but I see a real good player who is getting better and has the speed to play the Sam position.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
$41.7 mm guaranteed to Stafford? Need a rookie salary structure for sure now. A rookie contract for $72 million bucks overall is just nuts.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
if aaron curry is there.. you have to take him..
April 24th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
One more time, since I will not be able to find this for another year.
My Final Mock:
1- Monroe/ A Smith
2- M Johnson/ DHB. I think one of these 2 will be available at 40
3- Alex Magee, Dorell Scott, C Baker, Sammie Lee
4- Vaughn/ Bruton/ M Mitchell
7- Russell Allen/ Ty Sales
So:
1- OT
2- DE/ WR
3- DT
4- S/ LB
7- LB/ S
April 24th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Jerry .. your doing your best John Kerry impersonation arent you LOL..flip flop flip flop

thats funny.. thats the same exact thing “draft exports” said about Stinchcomb, Mo Collins and Robert Gallery.. and all ended up playing guard
April 24th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
I also like these players in the 2nd:
DEs: Sidbury, Paul Kruger, Jarron Gilbert, and Clinton McD in the 4th
WRs: DHB, Ramses Barden, Robiskie, or Mike Walkace in the 4th
Is the 40th too high for Sidbury?
April 24th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Raider O lmfao brother you have given 35 final mock drafts…. your the best … lol
April 24th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
i mean that in the good way so you know
April 24th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Tomycar, I know and I’m not going back on what I said about Ricey. But GM’s are making a big mistake with Curry concerning his lack of pass rush skill. The DC at WF asked him to do too much and his coverability took away from his ability rush the passer. The kid is an extraordinary talent. And would enhance our defensive playmaking ability tremendously.
Rickey Brown gives us a very steady aggressive player but Aaron Curry would give us a once in lifetime player. Like when we had Marcus and still got Bo, to use an analogy. However I’ll take a OT or a DE. I really don’t want a WR unless Crabtree falls and that could well happen.
IMO DHB will be available at 40 no problem I just don’t see him going in the 1st rnd.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Who knows. Get the draft over already. Sick of the speculation.
NO ONE KNOWS
NO ONE…
All depends on who the people in front of you pick or trade or what have ye.
Lets do this thing…
April 24th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
LMAO.
They are all final Drafts. lol
April 24th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
BHP : if Curry is not there at #7 do you think its to high for Rey M if so why
April 24th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
They all have the same players too. lol
Dude,
Honestly I’m not playing, my DR said the draft is giving me OCD. lol
April 24th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Can’t sleep. Too many names popping in my head. Just praying the one Al picks turns out great. Can really care less who it is. They will get my support.

At this point I can agree with you, let’s get this done and break it down later.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

April 24th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Stafford finally signed for 78 MILLION over 6 years.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
O brother your killing me LMFAO
April 24th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
So Ricky brown should start now what is he about 235lbs whats kirk 240 lbs how about are de they run about 250-265 and we wonder why we can’t stop the run get some beef on those ends and at lb . Are biggest DE is 280 and can’t rush the passer and are biggest LB is 240 if Curry is their no way you pass on him no way!
April 24th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
As long as it’s not DHB at 7th, I will be happy.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Namdi, thank you for giving up your privacy, you are now eaiser to hack/track…
Ease off eating at that Church’s Chicken, I know where you at
Trade Burgess and Fargas for a 3rd and 4th!
DTs in the later rounds tend to payoff and stay off drugs…
Leave ‘em bleedin!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
But I don’t wana diss brown he is a solid player and made some plays.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
please protect our QB and give our RBs huge lanes with which to run.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Rey Maualuga would be a little high at #7 I would like to get him at say #14. The reason is I think there are players available at #7 that might be better players than he is. Eventhough I think for us REY would be a difference maker, a force that we desparately need.
They say he’s not a 3 down player and in some situations they’re right but we have the perfect players for such situations already. So with us it’s different. He would be a great addition.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

NoMoreFargas
I know what your saying about Brown versus Curry. I just believe the team will draft a player that can fill a gap where we have marginal talent to improve that position, and they are OT,WR,DT.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I like Rey a lot too, but at 7th I want a player who will have a huge impact this season. For me to say Rey had a big imact, our 31st ranked Defense against the run has to improve to the top 15.
I think an OT, WR, or D lineman would help us more. IMHO

Anyone know anything about the Raiders shopping Burgess to the Eagles? What are they hoping to get?
April 24th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
That’s Funny since he came from the Eagles!!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

That’s my story and I’m sticking by it.We shall see tomorrow and good job with all of your mocks, I would be happy with any of those players.

Thank you Sir, but you shouldn’t encourage me! lol
I’m a mad man when it comes to these mock drafts, and most here will testify to that.

Yea I know but JAWS just said that Raiders shopping Burgess to Eagles on BSPN.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
What would Burgess be worth, a 3rd rounder?
April 24th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Raider O
My gut feelings tell me we will receive a extra pick in this draft, I just don’t think it will be tomorrow.
I know one of your mocks, included a extra pick, I just don’t see it any higher than a fourth round.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
He was a 2nd or 3rd RD pick for them, I can’t see us getting anything more than a 3rd or low 2nd.
Tony just went for a 2nd next year!!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Ah… the show is just about to start. Excited to welcome the next new Raiders.

April 24th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

April 24th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
on the chronicle show J.Mac was on earlier today it showed we have 2- 4th rd picks.don’t know where the extra pick came from, but they showed it.

April 24th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
R8,
Thank you.
Since we were talking WRs the other day, do you like Mike Wallace from Ole Miss?
I think he is a poor man’s Maclin.
6′0 199, ran a 4.33 40, 40″ vertical, and 10-9 broad.
Last year, he had 39 catches for 784 yrds and 7 TDs.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Walterfootball.com is saying a source close to the organization told them that Al is high on Trevor Scott, so no DEs in the 1st 2 RDs, and that he’s looking to draft DHB.
Who’s Walter?!?
April 24th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Alright guys here is my analysis, luckily the strengths of this draft are at OT and WR which is exactly where we are weak at. Here are the players (in order of preference) that would be acceptable in Rd. 1 (assuming we don’t trade back). Here are our positions of need from most pressing to least.
OT, WR, DT, MLB, and S.
Rd. 1 – Crabtree, Curry, Raji, Oher, Monroe, Smith.
I think we should spend our 1st rd pick on helping out Jamarcus b/c we have invested the farm in him. Crabtree is an instant starter in our recieving corps. Every other reciever is a total reach at the #7 spot. We don’t have a 40 time on him but JLH is our deep threat. Crabs is our possession type reciever with body control. When we go 3 wide Schilens or Walker can split out wide w/ Crabs and put JLH (and or Mcfadden) in the slot. Curry and Raji are just the elite players at their position. Curry would be an instant starter in our LB corps and Raji would help our run defense out whether he is an undertackle or NT.
If we can’t get Crabs or one of the D – players then we draft the best tackle available per Cable’s opinion.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
All these opinions on mock drafts are great and fun to read as we all have our opinions and hopes of who the Raiders will finally take.
For the serious minded drafters, they should take a few things into consideration.
First, all Raider picks are picks from Al Davis, period, and he’s not influenced by coaches or other staff personnel.
Second, Al usually uses “Speed” as the tie breaker when it comes to numerous options at the same position.
Third, Al isn’t concerned about character flaws, unless they’re off the page.
Four, Al is not afraid to take a chance.
Five, Al is not afraid to go after a player from a small college, if he really likes the guy. (Al had a lot of early success in this area).
Sixth, Al may be a little senile and a little stubborn at
times, but he’s not stupid, totally that is! So, with the
need of some desperate teams having to move up in this years draft, my prediction is that Al actually makes the trade and moves down on the draft…AND…as a result, we come out much better than picking at seventh.
Will know in about 14 hours.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Later R8, and TRY to get some rest before the draft.
Good night Nation.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I’m hoping for Andre Smith, won’t be disappointed with Crabtree, will be upset for a while if we get Raji, and will be completely pissed if it’s Maclin. Would prefer a trade down for Maualuga.

We play and will continue to play, a pass rush cover D.
Might as well shore the **** spot if we think the kid can.
April 25th, 2009 at 1:51 am
One down (sorry Detroit, you just made another in a long list of mistakes, but this one’ll cost you more than all the others) and five to go.
When it gets right down to it, appears to me that the Raiders will be making a mistake if they don’t select Michael Oher. The young man has what the Silver and Black needs and the story just fits.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:02 am
10 hours to go…and I have finally come to my conclusion….Al is going to trade down. All indications point in that direction. Let’s pray he then makes it worthwhile.

April 25th, 2009 at 5:30 am
havent heard any talk from the nation on hakim nicks why? i mean this guy catches everything and is a freakin HORSE how many times have we seen raider receivers drop passes over the last few years? we need receiver help y not get someone who catch the freakin ball?
April 25th, 2009 at 5:58 am
i would love Nicks in the second BESTCOAST, but i think he wont pass the Jints at 29, St. Louis Rams at 35, Cleveland Browns at 36, Seattle Seahawks 37 or Jacksonville Jaguars at 39. all are very possible landing spots depending on what they do with their first picks imo, xcept the GMen.
there is talk about his workethics and intelligence which caused his slide but the guy has the best hands in the draft with nice quickness and size reminding me of Tim Brown so you know i wouldnt mind him at all. he is one of my wishes in the second

Good Morning Raider Nation!
Only 7 hrs til the moans and groans. LOL
April 25th, 2009 at 6:09 am
PFT said that the eagles offered no better than a 3 for Anqaun Boldin. The Raiders should offer a third and Justin fargas. The Cards are looking for running backs and Fargas can block for that team.
I was against the aqcuisition yesterday but if that is all that is on the table then the Raiders should at least make an offer.
As far as compensation boldin should get the same deal as TJ Houshmanzadeh.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:12 am
15-16 million in guarantees for Boldin would be comprable to TJ.
If the raiders made this deal, they could live with it.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:18 am
Good morning from the highlands, nation.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:22 am
Boldin would suit a team thats ready to win. I dont think we’re there yet. We need a young WR to grow with J-russ, D-mac etc. Still think biggest need is DT but not at 7, so prob go with Crabtree. If he’s not there then A Smith is prob the logical choice lest we trade down. Dont know what we’ll do if Curry falls though. Hard to pass up, but then there are teams who would prob trade up for him and we get Raji with Robiskie in the 2nd and M Johnson in the 3rd.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:26 am
If Sanchez goes to the Rams thats really gonna change the board
April 25th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Rise and shine Jerry Its the biggest day off the year so far……………………….. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Oakland Raiders are shopping defensive end Derrick Burgess.
Burgess, who spent four years with the Eagles before signing with the Raiders and spending four seasons there, could end up being traded back to Philly, per Mort.
Another potential target is the Panthers.
Burgess is entering the final year of his contract. According to NFLPA records, he’s due to earn a base salary of only $2 million in 2009.

Troon lol pretty close, r u a killie fan?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:35 am
6 miles away! Awesome. The Nation is bigger than we thought. Not Killie. Green half of Glasgow. The Raiders keep me on the ground I guess.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:36 am
I hope Sanchez goes in the top four. It will give us more choices when we’re on the clock.
By the way, Lombardi is still all over Heyward-Bey. He says, “Who cares if he can’t catch; we can teach him to catch. We can’t teach him to run fast!”
He can’t run routes either, but hey, no problem. The Raiders have a great track record of turning sprinters into great wide receivers.
Oh. Wait.

Yeah we like speed. Don’t recall James Jett snaring too many passes though!
April 25th, 2009 at 6:39 am
The green half! That is low, Rangers just beat St Miren thats them on for the double!
April 25th, 2009 at 6:40 am
Hey, Dude. Better you ‘n’ me stick to Silver N Black. Lol.
Ok guys final predictions anyone?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:41 am
Braveheart… Or Rocket Ismael. Or Willie Gault. Or Carlos Francis. Or Johnny Morant. Or (insert name here).
I hope you caught my sarcasm in that post.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:46 am
Edward…ok ok ok enough already. Yeah i caught it. Just prefer a WR who can catch first I suppose. Gault didn,t like the middle much. I saw Ismail dissapear into Deon Sanders back pocket, too (Nothin unusual against him). But you get the point. If we go WR i hope its Crab, but dont know if he’ll be there or who will with Sanchez maybe going to St. Louis.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:46 am
1. Maclin(bad move)
2. Michael Johnson(Burgess is on the move)
3. Xavier Fulton
4. Michael Mitchell
April 25th, 2009 at 6:46 am
DHB is not the pick. Lombardi is a hater. He does not have credibility
The more you hear about DHb, the more you think he will be there in the 2nd round and ultimately Lombardi will adjust his babble to say that the raiders have targeted DHB the whole time that is why they passed on crab and took…. with the 7th and dhb with the 40th pick.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:48 am

I dont want Maclin at 7, either. Rumour has it JOhnson will fall to the 3rd, but do they risk it if Burgess goes? Like I said earlier, trading Burgess just creates another Hole.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Dickv…I would def take him in the 2nd. Think most of us would. But we tend to have crazy drafts every now and again. Hope its not this year.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Look at what the Dolphins did last year got rid of Jason Taylor because he had a me first attitude and it paid off, looks like were following the same direction as that and getting rid of Burgess. He is a liability in the Run D im kl with gettin rid of him tbh.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:54 am
Dude..Years of playing with a poor line cant help either. I dunno. Maybe we just take best available all rounds see what we get. But then, thats too logical so it wont happen. Wonder how much say Cable really has.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:56 am
I agree, Dickv. He and Mayock just seem to have started this whole thing all by themselves. Lombardi’s pissed because he got fired; Maybe Mayock’s pissed because he didn’t get hired. Or maybe he’s just dumb, I don’t know. People think he’s a genius because he said Cutler was going to be better than Vince Young or Leinart, but how much acumen did that really take?
I was watching the NFL Network crew do their mock draft and at one point it was almost like they were making fun of Mayock’s fascination with DHB. A couple of them were trying to get Eisen to pick him when he was on the clock for the Jets and everybody was kinda smirking about it.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:56 am
BHR,
not that crazy.
Al does not take WR in the first round and if he was going to the Wr would have to be exceptional. Tim Brown had Heisman hardware with him when he was selected by Al.
Anybody suggesting that DHB is the pick with # 7 is just talking $h!t. Lombardi, mayock, Walter Football, david white, peter king are just loosing more and more credibility. They believe its all right to say this garbage because it is the raiders but I do not give them that pass.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:58 am
“The Minnesota Vikings, who hold the 22nd pick, are seriously intrigued by Harvin, and there are people within the organization pushing to take him. However, I have been told that Harvin might even be off the board by the time Minnesota is on the clock”. NFL.com
Thats the kinda crazy ass draft we do. Pick someone like Harvin
April 25th, 2009 at 6:59 am
Hell yeah trade burgess always hurt and walks aroung like he is bruce smith are something, don’t think any one would be crazy enough to give us anything for walker but I will hope for miracles .
April 25th, 2009 at 7:00 am
“… walks around like he’s Bruce Smith or something…”
lol
April 25th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Mayock, Mel kiper, and Mcshay are not experts. They are not coaches, they are not scouts.
They show up to the senior bowl like coaches and start handing out grades. They don’t really go around and look at all the players. They are preparing for their on air spots in studio.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:02 am
Id love for us to trade give buffalo our 1st and Burgess for both thier firsts- unlikely, then take DHB and Robert Ayers in the first and then go for Mack in the 2nd and push Satele to RG or take Beatty and let him compete for a tackle spot, he is perfect for the zone system.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:03 am
some good points Cantstandthehaters but if we could trade back i would love to see us get hakim nicks he is Boldin at a cheaper price.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:03 am
Damn does anybody want DHB I worried about us drafting him at 7# all week man come on big al not him .
April 25th, 2009 at 7:04 am
I’d take Ron Brace if he’s there in the 2nd. Nasty nose-tackle, no glory just guts. It’s what we need.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Harvin is rated a late first round talent by Gil brandt. he probably will go their.
Brandt is on point when it comes to evaluating the talent in the draft in relation to where they will be selected.
For example Brandt had Tyvon Branch in his hot 100 last year in tier 71-80. That is why the raiders had jumped up a few spots to draft him at 100 because they beleived he was the highest rated player on the board.
Brandt successfully pegged 92 or 93 of the top 100 picks last year and similar results in previous drafts.
Brandt also goes to just about every pro day that he can possibly make.
That coupled with being tom Landry’s personnel guy for all those years gives Brandt all the credibility in the world.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:09 am
Am I the only one worried that we will be near the last in the NFL against the run because we will blow too many picks on offense? I know the O-Line is the way to go but how many years can we sit back and watch as this Defense gives up 150+ yards a game?
Draft Defense all the way and turn this team around.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:09 am
Id rather take Jarron Gilbert than Brace, Brace looks like he is just a big body in the middle we have that in Turd i dont want another, Gilbert looks like he could be similar to Darnell Dockett, very similar physically anyway.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:11 am
Braveheart… I like him, too. I saw some highlight video of him and was surprised at how quick he is for a big guy.
If we’re shopping Burgess though, my guess is Michael Johnson at that spot. I like the idea of a pick for Burgess; probably won’t get much more than a fourth because of his age and recent injury history, but we might be able to find some line depth there (offense or defense).
April 25th, 2009 at 7:12 am
Looks like Kiper has come to his senses he has us taking Eugene Monroe…I could live with that
April 25th, 2009 at 7:15 am
Dickv… I like Brandt as well, and I think Pat Kirwin is pretty solid.
Those are the two opinions I usually look at first. They’ve both been in the league as GMs and seem to be a lot more level-headed than everyone else.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:15 am
Agreed about Sands. He’s got one move coming off the snap, gets stood up straight like a roll of wallpaper.Indiana wants D all the awy and its hard to argue against, but I dont think there’s a pick at 7 unless Curry falls and you dont need 3 great LBs. I think they’ll go Offence first round. Crab if he’s there, or A Smith. After that ….
April 25th, 2009 at 7:15 am
I saw Gilbert play live twice this last season and he was all over the place making plays very athletic and I agree I would take him over brace.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Raiders are making some trades!
April 25th, 2009 at 7:32 am
Mike Lombardi on Al Davis back in the day…..
“People think Mr. Davis is a dictator, telling everybody what to do, but it doesn’t really work that way. He wants input from everybody and he doesn’t mind you speaking out against something he says.
But you’d better have good reasons for doing it, so you can answer his questions. Anybody can answer the first question, but you’d better have good answers for questions two, three and four, too.”
A few years later Lombardi was dumped, lost a grievance to collect some money he claimed the Raiders owed him, and obviously sings a very different tune…turns out Al Davis really is a “dictator”…lol…so the question is, what was Lombardi doing while collecting a paycheck for 8 years? I mean, a capable personnel pro like him could get a job somewhere else, right?…oh wait.
And I like Lombardi, I read his stuff and watch him on NFLN, it’s better than listening to some reporter who has never worked in the NFL or some former player who clearly has no idea what he’s talking about and relies on cliches 80% of the time.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Marley Esq.,
good morning. And good morning all.
the first part of what you just wrote regarding Lombardi is pretty much the exact words that John Madden used as well in describing the dynamics of talking football with Big Al.
A bit more than six hours and the server for this site is most likely going to crash.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:44 am
Decon Jones is the best..just saw him on nfln..”i wanted to take all offensive players but them in a bag and beat um with a baseball bat” LMAO… we could use a guy like that today
April 25th, 2009 at 7:48 am
but them….put them
April 25th, 2009 at 7:50 am
Deacon Jones head slap was a moved that was banned by the NFL. Part of the Ram’s Fearsome Foursome. Jones, Merlin Olson, Roosevelt Grier and Lamar Lundy. One of the great D Lines of all time.

April 25th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Hey M
Yeah, one pick down, really a no-brainer, it was Stafford all the way.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:54 am
This is the first Raider draft in awhile where I’m a little afraid of who we’ll take first, and that includes the years we took Gallery, Huff and others. Those guys were rated as the best players at their respective positions and there weren’t too many people that opposed those picks at the time.
This Heyward-Bey thing scares me a little; maybe it’s just pre-draft jitters, but there seem to be a lot of folks that are pretty sure that’s what’s coming. He’s not even close to Crabtree in football terms, and I just really hope that we don’t make a big mistake.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:55 am
Jerrah, I told you in the chat the other day this guy is going to be a guard in the NFL. When he flops at tackle, think of me.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:56 am
Ed
I was talkin earlier about how every now and again we do something crazy. I’m worried we take H-Bay or Maclin, or worse.

Looked up great defensive lines. Didn’t see the current line listed in the top 10,000. LMFAO

April 25th, 2009 at 8:06 am

You’d think we’d be in there somewhere!
I’m not opposed to taking Maclin or H-Bay if we trade down. If the Rams are into Sanchez (?) it changes the board. People will fall. Its just a question of who and did we factor it in. This is the year to trade down. What we need might not be there at 7 (Crabtree), or not worth it that high (Raji). We gotta trade.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:07 am
This has been one of the sanest offseasons in quite some time. I don’t expect the trend to be bucked today with a DHB type of pick. Our “disappointment” will be Maclin over Crabtree, or Oher over Maulauga. Al has not taken a guy in the top 10 who is not the top player at his position. He may pull a doozey with the position he picks, but not the player in the top 10.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:18 am
IMO
2.- J. Smith
3.- Curry
4.- Monroe
5.- Crabtree
6.- A. Smith
All gone.
It’s down to
DE: Orakpo
DT: Raji
OL: Oher
WR: Maclin
LB: Maualuaga
All decent picks, none a “great” pick.
I’m more excited about rounds 2, 3 and 4….
April 25th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Bob Marley…
The Redskins want Sanchez. If they think he’ll be gone there’s a trade there. We can still get one of your picks at 13.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Lombardi is stupid. Only him would think Curry drops out of top 10.
Lions are stupid too. How do you throw a coinflip on 41 mil when you could have had a proven Cutler for much less?

if curry really does start to fall then he has to be the pick for us. i don’t see it happening but if it does then we can throw “need” at wr and lt out the window and get the best player in the draft. like you said though, lombardi is an idiot. curry won’t fall out of the top 5.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Jeremy, I hope the Raiders NOT DRAFT A WR. WR’s can be had in later rounds. yes Al will take speed but usually in later rounds. The kid from Call Poly could be one of those guys or Knox. He loves the big reach pick but usually in the first round we are quite vanilla. It’s either OT or Raji for us I am quite certain of that.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Anyone watching NFLN?
They just did a long piece on how Percy Harvin is the best WR in this draft. Deion, Marshall Faulk, Gruden, Mariucci, and Mayock.
Mayock say Oakland might take him at 7, but he won’t slide past the Jets at 17, and the Jets may trade up to get him.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Tyson Jackson maybe in the mix as well.
I’d have no problem with Jackson over Orakpo, he reminds me of Kevin Carter who was also a huge DE who lined up on the left side, Carter was a much better pass rusher than Jackson is at this stage but Jackson may be able to give us 6-8 sacks a year as well as solid all-around play from that spot.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:33 am
jhill,
are those guys serious? harvin wasn’t even a true wr at florida. i remember when everyone said that reggie bush was the best player in the draft (and the next barry sanders). look at him now. he is a specialty player. same thing that harvin was at florida. percy harvin is the next peter warrick and warrick was a more polished wr coming out of college.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:33 am
I would be reluctant to take Harvin at 40. At 7? No chance.
Then again, we haven’t made a good decision in Rd1 in recent memory. So, I dunno. We’ll find out soon enough.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:37 am
crabtree, maclin, britt, nicks, dhb, robiskie, and barden are all better wr prospects, imo, than harvin. harvin, at the very best, might end up being a productive do it all kind of guy like eric metcalf was but he will never be a great or even very good wr in the nfl.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Jeremy,
They raved about his unquestioned playmaking ability. Wes Welker on steriods is what Faulk said. Get him in the slot running those patterns and how can you stop him. TD’s, TDs, and more TDs.
Mayock has him as a top 5 talent in this draft, and again talks about the value someone is going to get at around 15 with this guy.
You aren’t seriously comparing Warrick to Harvin, are you? The speed difference is pretty big between those two.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:41 am
We dont need Harvin we got DMC. Mayocks just talkin outta his A^&. Going by the mocks its Crab or Maclin. All said, it may be better if Crabtree isnt there but A Smith is. He’s prob the safest pick and fills a need.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:42 am
jhill,
just wait and see on harvin. i am not questioning his physical abilities but there is no way in the world that he is going to be wes welker, let alone wes welker on steroids. wes welker is smarter and a great route runner. harvin can run the bubble screen and the fly pattern. warrick may be a little stretch but my comparing him to eric metcalf is not. metcalf was a very good football player that did everything but wasn’t a great player at any particular position.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Percy Harvin from Florida, were talking about here, right?
I can understand if you don’t want him, but to question his talent is somewhat of a headscratcher. All 5 of the panelist agreed on his talent. He will be a top 15 pick today, and only slides b/c of pot.
But he’s Peter Warrick? And not as good as Britt, Nicks, and Barden?
Wow!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Stafford,Sanchez and McDaniel??? 3 QB’s B4 we pick,maybe,imo
April 25th, 2009 at 8:43 am
In fact, put me down on the Tyson Jackson bandwagon.
If they trade Burguess, LDE is wide open for Jackson to start from day one.
One more thing on Jackon, much like Carter, he can play inside on passing downs, that kind of versatility provides added value to the DL rotation.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:44 am
he is not as good a wide reciever as those guys. again, not questioning his physical abilities but he is not a true wr.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:45 am
Jackson would be a good pick. Not many of us saw it as a possibility, but with Sanchez maybe going in the top four somebody will drop. Maybe Jackson, maybe Curry.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:46 am
What’s up nation, it’s Draft Day.
What the hell, one more final Mock Draft. ( R8 lol)
1- A Smith
2- M Johnson/ DHB
3- Magee, Scott, Baker, or Sammie Lee
4- Bruton/ M Mitchell/ Vaughn
7- Russell Allen/ Ty Sales
OT
DE/ WR
DT
SS
OLB
April 25th, 2009 at 8:46 am
I think Harvin is going to be to the WR position what Chris Johnson was to the RB position. I compare him to Steve Smith of Carolina, and would be happy to have him. Especially over DHB!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:47 am
Jackson is a high riser Marley. Talk of him going 3 to the Chiefs, if you believe Kiper.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:48 am
The draft is here, I’m so excited.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Harvin would suit a team thats settled at both RB and WR, come in on third down n stuff. No good to us though.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:48 am
O LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:49 am
trade down and get both Mack and Maualuga in 1st.Man what a dream scenario!!!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:50 am
chris johnson was a true running back though. yes he had great speed but he was the only ball carrier at ecu. in addition to his speed he also had great vision and knew how to play the rb position. harvin is a jack of all trades kind of guy. he will be a good return man, line up in the shotgun, line up at tailback, and be a good 2nd or 3rd receiver but i don’t think that he will develop into a no. 1 receiver in the nfl.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Percy Harvin can be compared to Devin Hester, but Hester was primarily a CB at Miami, Harvin has always been a WR-RB in Florida so he should contribute much faster than Hester as a WR.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:53 am
The tricky Rams, they have a rumor out that they bought a ticket for Sanchez to come visit them on Sunday.
I think they did that so they can increase their trading power, and force teams who like Sanchez to start trade talks with them.
Very smart you tricky little Rams.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Dammit! NFL Network shows the crowd outside Radio City and of course their is a Raiders fan dressed like Freddy Fukin Kruger.
Why do idiots have to give us fans a bad name. How come it couldn’t be a regular guy with a hat or jersey?
April 25th, 2009 at 8:54 am
*there is
April 25th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Al should draft Usain Bolt in the seventh round just for the hell of it.
He probably can’t catch or run routes, but neither can a lot of guys we’ve drafted just because they were fast. All else being equal we might as well have the fastest guy in the world.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Man i feel like a kid on christmas eve
I think the clock is slowwwww
I dont feel trady
April 25th, 2009 at 8:56 am
i hate that crap too raider75. everyone, outside of true raider fans, think that we all dress up like it is halloween or a star wars convention for anything that has to do with the raiders. yeah, it is entertaining to see some of the characters in the stadium on game day but that is only some people, and it is GAME DAY!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Ok,
I respect you guys’ opinion on this, but this just in on NFLN … The Jets have a trade in place with the Jags at 8 if the guy the want is there. The guy they are most likely looking at? Percy Harvin.
What a great day this is starting off to be. Good conversation this morning gents. Giving me more reason to “delay” the trip to Mama-in-laws to help out with the garage sale that jacked off my tee time, LOL!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:58 am
75,
Have you been watching the Percy Harvin Network, I mean the NFL Network all morning?
I mean, I half way wanted this guy before I woke up, but damn they are pumping this guy up. They have EVERY war room they go to talking about him. Literally!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:58 am
R8,
LMAO
I didn’t know you were here!!
April 25th, 2009 at 8:59 am
haha jhill. my tee time got screwed because i had to go to my in laws house as well. gotta get her pool ready. was going to get 18 in before the draft. now i have to wait until 2moro.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:00 am
jhill,
i think the guys on nfln are smokin the same stuff harvin was.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:02 am
I think harvin is a little overrated.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Sorry about that Jeremey, nothing better than 18 to start your day. But at least you’ll be around the pool. I have to take the swing shift selling my daughter’s 3 year old gear to people who couldn’t afford to go by new 3 year old gear. And my wife took my 905T 9.5 degree to sell it. She better get at least $100 for that, or I’m quitting on the spot, LOL! Maybe my daughter can take a break from the wiggles and sell her own crap.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Which reminds me .. O!
Noggin channel is WAY more tolerable than Elmo. Just change the channel bro! They are two young to miss something for more than … well then next cartoon that come on.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
It’s Mayock. He’s got Harvin rated as the 5th best player in the entire draft on his latest board. Seriously. He doesn’t want to look like an idiot for putting Harvin ahead of Jason Smith, Aaron Curry, Andre Smith, BJ Raji, Tyson Jackson, etc. (which he did), so he’s gotta go out and pump it up a little.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
im glad the hornets are playing at 10 to give me something to do
April 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Man is it me or Hakeem Nicks seem to be man among boys out there.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Where is 408, I have not seen him here in 4 days?!?
Maybe he is with Harvin! lol
April 25th, 2009 at 9:08 am
jhill, lmfao! that is a scary thought about letting your wife try to sell your driver. i won’t let my wife any where near my clubs. yeah, i will be around the pool but that is it. i have to “shock” it and put all kinds of chemicals in it because she doesn’t believe in pool covers during the fall and winter. that pool looks like swamp thing could live in it.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:09 am
hay O look at post #161
April 25th, 2009 at 9:09 am
i also have to agree about the noggin channel. my 2 year old loves it.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Jhill,
Please, dont say his name.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:11 am
It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
If Curry’s still there at #7, no way we pass him by.
If Curry’s gone, and Sanchez is still on the board…TRADE our #7 for the Jets #17 and their 3rd-round pick this year AND next year. Use our first two picks on WR or LB, in either order. Big problem with this scenario is the Jets might even go up to #2 to take Sanchez.
If Burgess is traded, DE must be the first or second pick…but can we can get the guy Al wants by trading down or does the team need to stay at #7 and take one of the “can’t miss” prospects? (I wonder…how can they be prospects, and be “can’t miss” at the same time?)
Either way, WR must be in the forefront for us…and Hakeem Nicks, Maclin, even DHB have a chance to be as successful at this level as Crabtree.
And yes, Maclin can be very successful in the NFL — two straight years of leading all of major college in total yards is no fluke. The guy can play, and the Raiders need playmakers desperately.

Watchin a little NFLN. I am about to go buy a truck. Hope I can get it done before the draft starts. Made an offer already.
Just say no to Harvin. The Raiders need talent, but they need TEAM players even more. They need productive, hard working, team first guys.

Well, I couldn’t say much since she put two of her “Bags” out there. Not to worry though, I haven’t hit that thing in about 4 years. Callaway X has been doing the job. Wifey’s trying to get a new dining room table, so yeah, clean out the storage and save me some cash out of pocket.
Why the hell do we have storage units anyway guys? Even if it’s our garages? WTF?

R8,
I hope all is well with him.
Can you OD from Pot? lol

Drafting someone to trade is never good unless the trade deal’s already signed-off on…otherwise, all your leverage is gone. Trade the pick for the best deal you can, when you can — and don’t look back.

i have been hitting a r7 for the last couple of years. still got my ti bubble 2 and big bertha war bird s2h2. for some reason, i can’t seem to let go of some of my old clubs. i feel you on the storage unit crap. we have one that is full of stuff that she says we are going to sell in a yard sell. i told her that by the time she finally has the damn yard sale, we will have spent $300 on the storage unit.
