Raiders get second coming of Lott-Tatum
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 6:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Tom Cable said he didn’t want to put too much pressure on second-round draft pick Mike Mitchell, but then went ahead and did it anyway, comparing his hitting ability to Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum.
So the Raiders got a wide receiver who is the next Randy Moss, and a safety to be compared with with two of the most fearsome hitters of all time.
And of course, the Raiders got exactly who they wanted.
In this case, there is no reason to doubt them.
Mitchell, until a few weeks ago, was so obscure he doesn’t have a bio listed on the NFL Draft Tracker on NFL.com or on the extensive list by compiled by Sportsxchange. The Sportsxchange lists 30 prospects at free safety and 32 at strong safety, and Mitchell’s name is not listed. There are 728 prospect in all, and Mitchel lis not listed.
Mel Kiper Jr.’s pre-draft book lists him as the 40th-ranked safety.
The Raiders didn’t even have a biography to pass out before Cable met with the press.
But Mitchell, as Cable indicated, did pick up steam. He visited 15 teams, and the Chicago Bears were believed to be particularly interested.
At his Pro Day workout, Mitchell was 6-foot, 221 pounds, ran a 4.43 40-yard dash, had 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and had a 37.5 inch vertical leap.
“A very, very physical guy,” Cable said. And it just so happens he can fly. Another good pick for us.”
A conference call with Mitchell is to follow.

While drafting him this high was a big reach, the last good *young* safety Oakland had was…..Vann MacElroy? Eddie Anderson? It’s been a while.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Is anyone else concerned that this guy pulled up during his second try at the 40 at his pro day, he’s fast yes, but at what cost?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Must say,
more impressed with his highlight reel than M. Huff’s, any day. If he pans out here, who is gonna look back and give two sh!ts that he was drafted a round early?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
We drafted Q Moses right about where everyone else had him, and where’s he at, that’s right, asking if you want to “supersize” that.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Al Davis has humiliated himself once again. The analysts don’t even know what to say about his picks. Why take proven college players — guys who make plays and score touchdowns — when you can take guys who are big and fast? It’s like he’s running a damn modeling agency.
And Cable, who has started to come across as a stable guy, is making a fool out of himself by pumping up these guys. Mike Mitchell like Ronnie Lott? Get a grip on yourself.
How can they pass up Monroe and Raji and Crabtree to take Heyward-Bey? I watched Maryland plenty of times and the guy did nothing to stand out. I suppose that’s because they run a “pro style” offense and not the spread?
Say hello to 4-12 again, Raider fans. We’re sunk.
April 25th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Jeez!!!! Guys don’t be such a bunch of gloomy Gus’s. Let’s get behind these guys, we can’t trust the experts. Who are those poo heads anyway?.
Maybe we can all get together open up a lemonade stand to keep the franchise afloat when the stadium is half full and the games aren’t televised.

They better cut/trade Michael Huff…straight up
Because of his bust status…we had to pass on Haloti Ngata AND Ron Brace AND Jarron Gilbert AND Rey Mauluaga
And we did pass on REy…a simple trade up could have netted a top 10 talent
My anger is directed at Davis’ strategy…Trade down from number to number 13 or 14 and get a 5th rounder or something…geez..save the money and sign a free agent or two
I hope for all the best from DHB and Mitchell and they look like exciting adds.
^^^^^
the draft strategy is terrible at best….coula have traded down and still got DHB and saved money and should have taken Jarron Gilbert in round 2 and still could have got Mitchell in Round 3….at the very least!
Frustrating and annoying beyond belief but what else can we expect from the crazy old man??

and now Mitchell is 6′4″, 243 pounds, runs a 3.87 40 yard dash, 43 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and can fly… really, he can FLY…

I wish all the best to these young men. They are Raiders now so get to work.
Unfortunately, I am in a “show me” state.
On the good side, I thought the team was good enough to win 7 or 8 games before the draft. So if these guys bust out…it won’t be a big deal..if just a missed opportunity
Al Davis needs to let someone else do the draft..Where’s that damn GM?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Are we reduced to saying “pooheads”, really?
April 25th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
He’s going to be really good for us, I have full confidence in that. I do agree that we reached though. Reaching is fine, as long as the guy turns out to be as good as I think he can be.

This is as far as I got in this new article by Jerry before I lost it and started cracking up. This is typical BS written by Al Davis, (or whoever writes Al Davis’s speaches) I will have to finish reading the article, but thus far, it seems as though this is dripping with sarcasm, and it sounds like Jerry is as skepticle, if not doubtful, as I am.

This draft is just like any other draft, shoot the dice and see what comes up. The only certainty in the draft is there is no certainty. 3/4 of these draft will last 2-3 years and be has beens and no ones. The other 1/4 will be the stars. Everyone on here is so down on these picks and where they were picked at. You don’t and I certainly don’t know how these picks will pan out. Just cheer them on and hope that Al is right. C’mon, Tommy! You’re the alleged scouting guy in here. Of all people YOU would know that ANY player taken in the first two rounds is a bust if he doesn’t make it to the Pro Bowl. Do some of your scpout stuff, then come back with a legitimate complaint about these guys.
BTW, TT — Just WHAT makes a player the “best” player to pick on draft day? First rounders only survive in the NFL at about a 60% rate — do you have the secret that gives your picks a higher percentage to succeed? A secret all the real scouts need to learn from you?
Give these picks a chance — it’s not costing anybody (but Al) anything
April 25th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
“They’ve told me that they really like the leadership and emotion I bring to the game,” he said. “I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, but I truly believe there isn’t another player that brings it like I bring it, every play, every practice, every game.”
—————–
I guarantee you he is going to be one of the best safeties in the league and we will look at this pick as the one that put fear back in our defense. We got corners that can cover and now we are going to lay the wood!!!
Can’t wait to see you doubters cheer for him when he lays out Marshall and Gates.

RFNY — I fear you’re right about Knowshon…he was compared to Gayle Sayers earlier today. Methinks he looks a lot like Marcus Allen, the way he moves in (and over) traffic. It will be fun facing him every year with our (yet to become) new and improved D. Hopefully, we won’t let him become the next L.T. of the AFC West.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
OK, I just watched the youtube video on Mike Mitchell, (because I just found out that he existed), but I have to say that the comparison to Jack and Ronnie is not as far out of the realm of reality as you may initially think. Dude can put people down! But, Mel said he would have been available in the 5th, and while part of that statment might be typical hating on the Raiders, part of it is true too. He may not last until the 5h, but we could have got him with one of our multiple 4th rounders for sure. I think the time the Rams jumped us for Orlando Pace has forever haunted us.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Can’t be much worse than Fredrickson, Harris, Moses, Bing, Gibson, Bates, Stinchcomb, Brayton, Collins, Buchanon, Huff, and many, many more. I think all of those were considered “good values” at the positions they were picked at the time, yet produced nil or next to nil.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
From Sporting News…
Mitchell has been a steady force at safety for Ohio, but he must play close to the line to be effective. His problems in coverage will prevent him from ever getting regular playing time in the NFL; he struggles to stay with anyone, showing stiff hips, and rarely makes plays on the ball. His lack of size also hurts him against bigger, stronger athletes. Mitchell projects as a free-agent pickup for a team in need of a backup who contributes in short-yardage run support situations and on special teams.

al has made me depressed i cant believe i was actually looking forward to this

Ever since the time we were jumped by the Rams for Pace, Al has been afraid to let a player he likes go by him.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
wow yeah rough day. Clearly next year I need make plans to hang out with my wife doing something she enjoys because I am still shell shocked on who we got.
Props to Walter football, mike mayock, Mike lombardi, and whomever else predicted the Raiders would draft DHB at # 7. These people know my team better than I do and I have been following them passionately for a long time.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
I’m not sold on the DHB and I don’t like it, but I love the Mike Mitchell pick.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Well, one thing’s for sure. All three of our young wideouts are way faster than the two DBs that Denver drafted today. They also didn’t do a whole lot to address their run defense. We should be able to put up a lot of points on them.
The Chiefs still don’t have a nose tackle.
The Chargers got a 250 pound linebacker that will have to deal with 300 pound-plus offensive tackles.
Relative to the division we didn’t do too badly. I hope we pump up the defense a little bit tomorrow.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
In other words value is personal. Like when you see a car you really like and maybe I don’t like it. Teams rate players differently as you know. If this kid is what think he is. He will have been rated as a top 10 pick easy. He just came on very late and we were extremely lucky to be there and bring him in.
Simple as that. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a safety like Mike Mitchell a long while.
So you can talk value all you want. How does MBush look in terms of value at this point and we got him in the 4th. This stuff is so freakin arbitrary it’s not funny. Who cares as long as he can play.
And buddy he can flat out play.

I am noticing several are concerned about what NFLN and BSPN analysts are saying here is a repost of an earlier post that shows you that the analysts are absolutely clueless…
Usually when the Raiders pick and BSPN analysts mock it turns out to be a good thing for the Raiders….
When they agree watch out!
BSPN praising Raider 1st rounders…
Jam. Russell (unproven – looks promsing two wasted years)
Huff (ARRRH!)
Gallery (Overall #2 for a Guard that took years to develop)
D Mac (unproven injury prone may work out in the end…
Buchanon (Showtime needed a curtain call!)
Brayton The DE we cut after trying to make into LB -
Gibson – Marginal player cut after several years
BSPN Mocking at Raider 1st Rounders
N.A. “Raiders really reached” Not!
Seabass – I mocked too…. They are probably right on this one….

mitchell did bring the pain. Noticed him dropping a few buckeyes.
Whatever it is I am steal going to be @ the coliseum next fall.
Mitchell sure had a lot of pre draft visits in the last few weeks for being considered a undrafted free agent by the “experts”. i have to hear what Gil Brandt has to say although I know he is a friend of Big Al. He still is the most respected draft analyst not employed in an NFL front office. I am guessing he missed the Ohio pro day.

The way I see it, if these EXPERTS were that damn good, then how come they’re not working in any NFL Franchise as G.M.s? I’ve read both draft picks interviews, and I like what I hear as an old diehard Raider fan. Both of them say they are not frightened of WORKING HARD & IMPROVING as football players. At long last, we’ve maybe got a couple of young kids who are willing to put team before being a frickin prima donna!
April 25th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I fear that Al is so determined to prove he can still find “diamonds in the rough” and discern talent better than anyone in the league, that we will have to live with the results of his experiments for some time. To pass up Monroe, then apparently not try to get Laurenitis or Rey-Rey in the second is, I believe, going to hurt for awhile. I expect Brace, who we gave to the Pats, will serve them well for a long time. I was excited by this draft- now I am just dismayed.

Al Davis is a giant JACKASS! And he proved it again today! Now..saying that…I’m not as upset with the picks b/c, lets face it, its a “crap shoot”. My issue with these obsurd embarrassing pics, is the fact that Bey could have been taken waaaaay later in the first round..and Mitchel could have been taken in THE EARLIEST, 3rd round. Why take him in the 2nd round when they could have taken Stintm, Brace, Barwin etc…and then draft Mitchell! This Franchise is a JOKE!
April 25th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
The question is this…
Did the Raiders improve at the positions they drafted?
I can’t really say that they did.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Just when you might think this team is on the mend and may come back because AL is making good decisions not signing free agents for more than they are worth………Now this….give Al his drool rag back!!
April 25th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
I liked DHB just at about #13-18 not at #7.
I honestly never heard of Mitchell except for some posts on the board. I thought we could go Dline in the 2nd but if the scouts think this guy is really good and that Chicargo was going to jump us then so be it….
I know we probably got an F from Mel…. That in itself makes the day somewhat successful.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

On a positive note, the film doesn’t lie about his hitting abilities, and it seems like that’s what a lot of you wanted.

April 25th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
SilverNBlack666..I was saying that 20 min ago. “Al has been pretty stable this offseason..making nice subtle yet good moves to improve this team”. Then..he goes and drafts the 4th best receiver..when #1, 2, & 3 are all on the board. He then drafts a safety that probably could have been picked in the 4th RD. If this safety was so good..where are his awards? Did he get Mac MVP.? Defensive player of the year? Defensive player of the game? Its not the MAC isn’t being scouted!
Every NFL scout knows who is who in the MAC..Now granted this guy may have moved up the boards after pro day..maybe moved into the 6th or 5th RD..NOT THE 2ND ROUND..AL DAVIS IS A DOUCHE
April 25th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Watching this guy’s highlight video, I can tell you one thing about him: He’s going to miss a TON on tackles. He’s all about the hit. He doesn’t wrap up at all in that clip. Looks like another Marques Anderson.

I mean come on when even Eric Allen who is usually all about the Raiders is laughing at the pick you have to wonder.

Brilliant.

I think M Mitchell will be great.
If M Mitchell is a bust, I will stop posting here.
I really enjoy talking football with you guys, but that’s how much I believe in him.

The way I see it, if these EXPERTS were that damn good, then how come they’re not working in any NFL Franchise as G.M.s? ”
Because television pays more for less work. Not hard to figure out.

That’s true, but what is even more true is that they have a fear of failure, Keyshawn, Kiper, McShay would be laughed out of every coaches office in the NFL.

Al Davis proved again today..he’s lost his mind! I feel bad for Cable..Cable seems to have good intentions but I highly doubt he had any imput in these picks..If he did..then he’s dumber than I thought!

I am willing to bet that a retarded monkey throwing bananas at pictures on the wall could have come up with a better draft than this.

HA! Al davis once again makes fools out of all of us Raiders fans! God..we took a (at best) 5th RD MAC safety in the 2nd RD..WOW!

Yet any of them could out-draft Al Davis. Given 30 minutes to research the prospects and a copy of Lindy’s draft guide and anyone here could do a better job of drafting than Al Davis.

Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech
Jamon Meredith OT South Carolina
Jarron Gilbert DE San Jose State
These are players I pegged for the raiders in round #2. If they are able to land one of them and they feel they have the best SS safety and WR in the draft does it really matter where they drafted these guys at

Yeah there are still potentially great players left in the third round. We go at number seven in the third, so it is not impossible that those guys will be left.

i dont care about how nnamdi turned out those were dumb picks you dont choose the fastest 40 over the best receiver
=====================================================
you dont waiste a 7 on a player who didnt want to be here.. we did that with Moss remember? how did that work out for us? Crabtree didnt want to be a Raider..
April 25th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Idiotic to draft this guy here, no one else was going to take him for many rounds because he’s a totally unproven workout warrior. I suppose he excelled against some teams that De La Salle could have beaten, but why not take a left tackle or a defensive tackle here or an OLB?
Al has no concept of value. He would probably have taken Reynaldo Neamiah with the first overall pick.
The Raiders won’t be good again until Al’s dead.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
…really, this draft is disturbing. Al’s clearly senile and probably wearing diapers. No doubt someone is having to wipe the drool from his mouth. Just embarassing. NO WAY I’ll be buying any more single game tickets, much less season tickets. We’re a laughingstock, and rightfully so.
April 25th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
THIS WAS A DISGRACE IN OUR DRAFT, MUCH WORSE THAN ART SHELL PICKING SAFETY HUFF, DAVIS WENT OUT AND CALLED OUT ART SHELL AND SAID SHELL SET DAVIS BACK 3 YEARS, WELL MR. OLD FUC! YOU SET US BACK 10 YEARS WITH WHAT YOU DID TODAY, IS EVERYBODY IN THE ORGANIZATION FUC@ING BLIND? CAN ANYBODY TELL THAT OLD PIECE OF SHI! WHAT HE IS DOING, LET ME GUESS, HE IS GOING TO FIRE CABLE THIS YEAR AND BLAME CABLE FOR THE PICKS, AND CABLE HAS THE BALLZ TO SAY THAT THE SAFETY IS COMPARED TO LOTT AND TATUM….
April 25th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Why do the Raiders even participate in the draft? They’re the laughing stock of the NFL and rightfully so. When do the NFL teams start competing in Track and Field? That’s when we’ll start to shine. What a joke. Hello, get some football players like the other teams in your division so you can compete with them. I have no idea why I keep hoping they’ll finally get a clue. It’s so disgusting……..
