Sharp criticism from Carter, Dilfer
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, April 26th, 2009 at 1:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The day started out nice as the Raiders received an apology of sorts from NFL Network Mike Mayock over his downgrading of safety Mike Mitchell, but later disintegrated after an ESPN studio session following a routine interview with coach Tom Cable by Suzy Kolber.
Some highlights:
Dilfer
“(Russell is) more accurate than people give him credit for. He’s definitely not a quarterback yet. He doesn’t do all the things quarterbacks do. I do believe the work ethic question is a legitimate one. When you can become 280 pounds in the offseason, that tells me something about how you value working out.
“Among the issues, you’re talking about speed going to help a quarterback. What about trust and dependability. And I’ll segue to you (Cris Carter), because what you did in the NFL, is a craft. It’s not just about being a fast athlete. It’s a craft. And quarterbacks need a receiver that value it as a craft, so you can trust and depend on them, especially in the critical moments in games.
Carter
“I don’t know how to build a football team. I admit that. And there’s a lot of other things I don’t know how to do. I do know how to make a receiver into a receiver, and I do know how to recognize a receiver when he can make a contribution to an NFL team.
“Darrius Heyward-Bey _ he made honorable mention All-ACC. Now you’re telling me that I just spent 50 million dollars on my quarterback, he’s my franchise quarterback, and I’m going to get a guy who’s going to be in the ACC, be inconsistent. He had games when he didn’t even catch a ball. So how’s that going to help JaMarcus? If he can’t catch a ball in an ACC game, he gets to the National Football League, now you know they have a reason to make him disappear.”
Dilfer
“It’s a different game. You can’t protect long enough to throw the football, fifth-five, sixty-yards down the field. It doesn’t work. That formula, run, run, run, suck ‘em up, throw it over their head, doesn’t work. It doesn’t work anywhere, and hasn’t worked for years.
“That’s why the best offensive coaches in this league offense understand the horizontal stretch as well as a vertical stretch. You have balance your offense to move the chains.”
Carter
“Honorable mention! Did anybody mention that?”
On Sunday morning, Mayock, when told the Chicago Bears were reportedly poised to select Mitchell, “apologized” for saying the Raiders could actually drafted the cornerback in the fifth round or later.
Mayock said he had seen no film of Mitchell and had no real handle on his skills.

Tommy Trojan25, go suck your self. USC will be terrible this year. They won’t finish better than 6-5

Carter and Dilfer are tools just like Tommy Trojan.
April 26th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
I am very pleased with this draft, however. Speed, speed, and more speed. That’s how you win games in this league. Speed kills! Davis still knows what he is doing, and I think you all need to give him some more credit and respect.

Heyward-Bey will be one of the best, most fear WRs in the NFL.
Mitchell will be one of the best, most feared safeties in the NFL.
Shaughnessy will be one of the funniest defensive lineman in the rotation, you know?
I don’t know much, but I know this, you know?

I can live with DHB as i can live with McFadden and Russell didnt want any of the guys, but heck now they are Raiders…
Mike Mitchell seems to have it, I posted a youtube clip just as we picked him, he seems to be okay, him at SS and Branch at FS thats okay..
I still wanted more for us trading down in the 2nd… we should ahve had a 5th round pick IMO too long between our last picks…
Furthermore, I wanted Antoine Caldwell in 3rd, so Russell had some protection. this Matt fella is just not necessary and he thats the pick that pizzes me off the most…
the WR in 4th and the OLB makes me shake my head, we need DT and ILB…
April 26th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
With their 6th rounder, the Raiders should take the fastest cornerback available.
April 26th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
If nothing else, the Raiders are consistant. Why draft football players, when you can draft speed. You can’t coach speed, “You know”…

HayesDaze,
Are the Raiders known for coaching up guys?
Is the Raider organization a good place for young players to grow and develop into stars?
—————————
Uhh, not until very recently. Time was we never “rebuilt,” we just reloaded all the old guys while hitting a homerun with a youngster or two. Now, whatever else you want to call it, we’re closer to being rebuilt than in any recent memory. Just add the right old guy or two to the mix, and we’re there.
Rebuilding means young talent must improve, and yes, our young talent has improved improved greatly.
Of course, I’ll be roundly criticized for saying our youngsters have improved. That can’t be, or the multi-personalities would be…gulp…wrong again!!!

Good for Mayock!!!! You would never see Kiper or McShay do something like that.
I am so sick of analysts talking about a team they no nothing about! Cable and his staff are not preparing to have 7 second drops and chuck and heave every play… That was Art Shell and 2006 – you guys are three years late on that one! I am sick of this create the straw man and tear it down crap. All they are saying is they want to have a vertical threat so the defense has to play the team more striaght up. To many teams have no long threat so teams stack up on them.
I mean does BSPN really think that Al Davis just looks at 40 times and all the coaches want to insitute an offense from the 1960’s? Did Russell really weigh in at 280 lbs. Was Dilfer looking over him on the scale? Give me a break!!!!

Will one person — ONE PERSON — tell me what DHB’s downfall is? The fact he wasn’t a “good value?” How do any of you know that without seeing him in pre-season at the very least? Before Nnamdi gives us an update on how they go head-to-head in camp?
The easiest thing to do is say the wrong pick was made, when there are a few thousand guys to pick from (and none have proven anything). It takes ballz to go get who you think is your man.

When you were 21 you were likely studying for your GED in night school and the interview you had to give was to the police department.

And the Schilens pick, and the Scott pick. Not bad if I do say so myself, but I won’t say so myself, you know…
April 26th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
DHB was drafted at 7 and the Raiders believe he is a starter in 09 right?
April 26th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Look…its a big boom or a big blazin bust…..with all of the picks…even the 4th rounders…because of the players passed over.
All the talking in the world can’t overcome the fact that the Raiders deployed the WORST draft strategy since Mike Ditka trading all his picks for Ricky Williams.
Its nothing against the players…DHB and the recently discovered Mike Mitchell have a lot of potential and have the RIGHT attitude. Also a chip on their shoulders.
Louis Murphy will give depth and is a better option than the wasted pick of Arman Shields, Watkins and Holland…3 players that were never going to see the field anyway….
Slade Norris and Shaughnessy…depth guys…not like they aren’t any better or worse then what’s on the roster now….with the exception of Trevor Scott…Scott is a player…but maybe Norris or Shaughnessy develop into player too.
The players are going to the their best to shine. Especially with the spotlight on them,
But Davis’ draft strategy. Its indefensible…It was the worst drafting strategy I have ever seen. THat’s not up for debate. I don’t care how good those players develop. Absolutely no regard for value or salary cap

As for Cris Carter, he already admits to not knowing how to build a team nor coach, I will assume.
As for this draft, I do not see what the big negatives are.
Cliff BRanch was taken in the fourth round, was he a horrible players? DHB may be Branch but at least he gets a chance?

who did they trade for the last pick?
April 26th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Overview
Despite signing with Iowa in 2004, Myers’ career seemed at a standstill. Not even listed on the depth chart in the spring of 2006, he developed into a reliable red-zone target as a junior, scoring five touchdowns on just 21 receptions for the season. Again listed as a backup entering his senior season, Myers parlayed injuries by others and his own development into earning first-team All-Big Ten accolades. Myers isn’t a special athlete, but in tying for the team lead with four receiving touchdowns in 2008, he is viewed by some as an ascending prospect. Others, however, question if his effectiveness was due to defenses stacking the line of scrimmage in an effort to slow running back Shonn Greene.

Dilfer, who was never much of an NFL QB says this:
“It’s a different game. You can’t protect long enough to throw the football, fifth-five, sixty-yards down the field. It doesn’t work. That formula, run, run, run, suck ‘em up, throw it over their head, doesn’t work. It doesn’t work anywhere, and hasn’t worked for years.”
Hey, stupid, you’re not much an analyst, either. That’s exactly how the Pittsburgh Steelers won their Super Bowl. Pound Pound Pound Bettis, then make the D scared of getting caught inside with Parker, then deep down the field.
It’s very hard to respect the job people do when they know less than people who aren’t being paid merely for their opinion.
