UPDATE: Myers added at TE
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, April 26th, 2009 at 2:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders sixth round selection, No. 199 overall, is Missouri defensive end Stryker Sulak, and then made a trade to get to No. 202 and select Iowa tight end Brandon Myers.
The Raiders acquired the pick from Carolina, which will get the Raiders’ pick (No. 216) in the seventh round and a sixth-round pick next season.

Slade Norris
April 26th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Mayock likes this guy. High motor, try hard type of guy. marginal athlete.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
BIOGRAPHY: Full-time starter the past two seasons after seeing sporadic playing time with the first team as a freshman and sophomore. Totals last season included 55/15.5/10.5 after 60/11/6 as a junior. All-Conference selection the past two seasons.
POSITIVES: Athletic defensive front seven prospect with ability as a defensive end or rush linebacker. Plays with good lean, effectively uses his hands to protect himself, and rarely off his feet. Quickly gets off the snap with a nice first step, good speed off the edge, and can bend or pursue from the back side. Physical, likes to mix it up, and finds a way to be a disruptive force. Strings plays out laterally.
NEGATIVES: Controlled at the point of attack by single blocker. Lacks the natural bulk to be a defensive end, and may struggle against the run.
ANALYSIS: Sulak is a disciplined defender who plays with an aggressive attitude. Best up the field, he has definite possibilities standing up over right tackle in a 3-4 alignment, and he could develop into a starter at the next level if he displays the ability to play in pass coverage.
PROJECTION: Fourth/Fifth Round

Its all about stopping the pass and scoring points…drafted a two speedy receivers, a safety and THREE situational pass rushers….to go with three linebackers that excel at pass coverage, the highest paid CB in the game, another good man2man corner and speed with tyvon branch.
The run defense consists of scoring points to force the team to pass.

Overview
Despite signing with Iowa in 2004, Myers’ career seemed at a standstill. Not even listed on the depth chart in the spring of 2006, he developed into a reliable red-zone target as a junior, scoring five touchdowns on just 21 receptions for the season. Again listed as a backup entering his senior season, Myers parlayed injuries by others and his own development into earning first-team All-Big Ten accolades. Myers isn’t a special athlete, but in tying for the team lead with four receiving touchdowns in 2008, he is viewed by some as an ascending prospect. Others, however, question if his effectiveness was due to defenses stacking the line of scrimmage in an effort to slow running back Shonn Greene.
Analysis
Positives: Legitimate NFL build. Stout upper body. Good hand placement and upper body strength to assist in pass protection. Shows some balance and lateral quickness to mirror the defender. At least adequate initial quickness off the snap. Flexible enough to dip under the jam to gain a free release. Shows some burst out of his breaks and to gain separation. Not often given opportunities to catch passes in Iowa’s offense, but shows at least adequate hands for the reception. Can make the tough grab in traffic.
Negatives: Lacks the straight-line speed to challenge down the seam. While possessing at least adequate upper body strength, is not explosive. Can get fundamentally lazy when blocking laterally. Stops moving his feet, causing him to remain engaged at the line of scrimmage or in space. Lacks agility in space to make defenders miss. Arrested in December 2007 on a charge of public intoxication and interference with official acts, pled guilty and was fined.

If you think Morrison is a liability now, what’s he going to be like outside with no linemen to even attempt to keep him clean?
If we ever do upgrade at MLB, Morrison will either backup Howard on the weak side or be allowed to walk. He is by no stretch of the imagination a SAM linebacker.

I’d like a more pass catching oriented TE. If Miller gets dinged, we have nothing. Tony Stewart is a decent enough blocking TE. Shawn Nelson or Cornelius Ingram would have been really nice picks.

Al Davis should feel humiliated with this “draft”. I know I am. With all the DEs we got, you would think one of them could be a base end instead of a speed pass rusher, but nope. Al davis is way too obsessed with speed, and for that reason alone, we will not be a respectable football team until he is gone. The run defense is bad….there is no way around that…score points and score often…that’s the goal…and it better be….
April 26th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I said this last year and I will say this again…
Last year when we were competitive, we put pressure on the QB. “We had no business winning the Jets game but Scott got sacks on Favre. When we got blown out, we never had pressure on the QB. New England, Denver, SD and ATL proved that. yes, I know we need to stop the run but it was the lack of pass rush that killed us.
I hope we do better with these DE’s we picked up.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
LMN its a big joke. Russell is the only way to redemptions. Al is a risk taker. He high risk/higher reward scenario is his style man. I see it and he gonna play them on the contracts

I have to give props to Priest, JHill, Nnamdi on the defensive strategy…
Its all about stopping the pass and scoring points…drafted a two speedy receivers, a safety and THREE situational pass rushers….to go with three linebackers that excel at pass coverage, the highest paid CB in the game, another good man2man corner and speed with tyvon branch.
The run defense consists of scoring points to force the team to pass.
I get it now! It was bludgeoned into my head…but I get it now.

daze, this one suites you too
——————————————————–
Slade is very good against the run from all that i have read, he is an OLB and was converted from DE. He is not a situatinal pass rusher. Shaughnessy is another guy that plays well against the run, i have actually seen him play but only a few times admittedly. He is a team leader and has the ability to rush the passer and be a force in the run game. He would have gone earlier if not for durability issues

The middle of the D-Line isn’t the problem. Give those big boys help left, right, and behind them, and the D-line is just fine. Kelly and Terdell are not the problem with the defense.
The run wouldn’t be nearly the problem it is to defend — if our opponents were ever forced to pass (and stopped in their attempts). Like the old yin and yang…score more points, and put the pressure on the other team to take risks. That means a much better chance of defensive success.
If a few more cylinders are hitting, the effects of the “weaker” links on the team can be lessened considerably.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Burgess, & Scott can get to the QB. Jay and the 3rd rounder add bulk to that position. If that Styrker kid does anything the raiders will have a formidable pass rush.
The raiders will have to score points. There is no doubt about that. So what. The raiders tried to build a great defense and it just got them into the worst period in the history of the franchise. Now there are tons of weapons on offense.
JR, Miller, Bush, JLH,Oren oneal, Dmac, Shields, Schillens, DHB, Louis Murphy, and Myers have all been drafted over the past few years. They have enough talent to make noise on that side of the ball.
JR and DMAC can be all pro’s in time. miller possibly a pro bowler. JLH is a threat every time he touches the ball. DHB is a dangerous player: he was rated a 1st rd pick. murphy can fly. Bush might be the most talented out of them all. They can score points now. I think schillens and shields will challenge for playing time this year ahead of DHB and murphy. Javon walker is lurking in their as well. There is more than enough talent to win games with that offense.
The defense is built to stop the pass. If the offense can score points teams will have to drop back and throw at them which is not an easy task. they can flat out fly. They can cover. There are two lB who can make plays. They have several players that can get pressure on the QB.
They will be bad against the run, and that is a certainty. They have to hope that offense can move the ball.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

i can’t defend al davis’ logic regarding the draft this year. i have always respected al davis and have believed that he would get things turned around. i am not going to whine and cry about the draft picks and i am definately not going to jump ship as others on here have stated. i am still going to support the team and hope that al’s picks eventually lead mel kiper, todd mcshay, mike mayock, trent dilfer, trey wingo, chris berman, me-shawn johnson, rich eisen, steve mariucci, suzie kolber, etc. to say that al really did something great and that they are completely surprised. with that being said, i still don’t understand the logic behind this draft plan.

Yeah Al hit it big with small school guys like JLH, (who i begged to get PT hist first year), Schilens-who i thought would end up getting cut, and Trevor Scott. Before every one gets too depressed, one thought – this is probably the weakest draft class for a decade. No wonder it has been so hard to predict, there just are very few stars and not much depth. I suspect that most teams will struggle to find roster places for five or more rookies.
We have got two good WRs and DHB could become a mega star. Mitchell fits a postion of need. All the others are battling for special teams and back-up slots.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
115
Terdell Sands problem is a consistent effort. On one play he would collapse the pocket and get in the backfield (only to have our weak DE’s get pushed out of the play or have over pursued) and then he will take 6-7 plays off, not including the ones that he would spend on the sideline.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I’ll be satisfied, when Mitchell ends LT’s career with a devastating hit.

April 26th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Stryker Sulak. What a great name for a football player. He’s 6ft 5ins and 251 lbs. Good athlete, fast(what else),quick and aggressive, good pass rusher. He’s also thought to have average skills and is called a “classic overachiever”. So what? So is Fargas.
What do we have on Brandon Meyers? All I know is that he’s a TE. Which is good because we need to free up Miller, he spends too much time blocking.
Come on Jerry, give us a report.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

April 26th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Love the 70’s porn names: Slade and Stryker. I think anybody who’s freaking out already ought to go outside, take a deep breath, and eat some pork. The Draft is a crapshoot, you can mitigate the risk, but there’s nothing to guarantee success regardless of where the player is drafted. Let it play out, or for Christ’s sake at least wait until the minicamps get going before you get all hysterical.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
i guess the draft is over for us huh??
April 26th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
LMN — try to play the game at least once (tackle, of course). Try and coach it for years. Try and evaluate players in the flesh — not the person/s taking the players in some beauty contest. Tray any of those things. Try and look at things a little more pragmatically, and then tell us again how bad the draft is — even before you’ve set eyes on the product once.
LMN — It ALMOST pains me to say this, because there are others who spew much more vile filth than you ever do…but, you’re the least knowledgeable 30-year-old football fan in the house — and gaining support from the multi-personality trolls sure doesn’t help your credibility at all.
April 26th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
tell al to dangle fargas for a seven as well. he should package walter and fargas together for the mr. irrelevent pick!
April 26th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
So, how much speed do we have at LT?
You have to wonder why Jacksonville let Barnes leave and then drafted OT in both the 1st and 2nd rounds.
Monroe. We could have had Monroe. Polished pass-blocker. Safe pick.
Before last year’s draft, I argued here that we should trade down with Cinci in a deal to get Chad Johnson, using the 10th pick to take Ryan Clady, who zone blocking experience would let him step right in at LT. I thought we could do that because we could run Michael Bush.
I just hoped we learned from the Tampa Bay game that Bush belings on the field.
April 26th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
It took a while but I think I’m ok now. I guess my disappointment stemmed from the Jets trading up with the Browns and not us for Sanchez. Out of my hands, I know, but just frustrating. I had a feeling the pick would by DHB, from looking at mocks and being a realist about Als love of speed. I’m not 100% thrilled with DHB but it would have been more palatable if we had gotten him later.

Yup. We are building sort of like the Indy Colts model. This is really on the coaches now.
They got the best QB & RB from the SEC, the best RB from the Big East, the fastest receiver since Calvin Johnson, a 6′4 225 receiver with 4.3 speed, the best young tight end in the game, a great slot receiver, the best two returners in the game on special teams and the strongest kicking legs at kicker and punter..
oh, and the best CB in the game, the 2nd coming of Jack Tatum, another good CB and the fastest WLB in the game.
That offense better average about 24 to 28 pts per game

Anybody who says Terdell sands and kelly had pretty good years last year were blind.
Don’t blame Morrison’s lack of run-stopping tackling ability on Sands and Kelly — most big runs against us were off-tackle, and the LB’s whiffed more than matadors.
If Burgess, or anuybody other than a rookie (Scott) had done ANYTHING on the edges last year, nobody’d even be even mentioning the big guys in the middle. They’re not perfect, but they were NOT the problem last year.
Would I like a big, young, mountain of a man in the middle? Yeah? Would I trade any one of my first 4 (the alleged “money” picks) of this draft to take one in his place? No.
And, LMN — we SHOULD have addressed MLB/ILB somewhere along the way (regardless of Kelly/Sands), and I’d be surprised if we don’t bring in a few to try out.

The second crumb of comfort is that, given the overall mediocrity, there will be some reasonable FAs. For example, those of us wanting to find someone to put pressure on Morrison will note that the following reasonable ILBs are still on the Board: Darry Beckwith, Dannell Ellerbe, Worrell Williams and Josh Mauga.

That’s my beef guys. Where is that DE that holds the g-d point? Where’s the NT that can swallow up a couple lineman?
That’s all I was looking for. I wasn’t looking for a defensive overhaul..although…
Just wanted ONE mf’er that can do something against the run and keep an LB clean.
The Raiders didn’t do that today and that’s what is disappointing. The 3rd and 4th rounds were disappointing. The DTs that were available could have helped.
I have no beef with the DHB pick. I really don’t. But they really needed a run oriented lineman and they didnt do it.
So now they have to rely on Dwayne Board to coach these guys up BIG TIME. Kelly has to be play to his contract THE BEST DT IN THE LEAGUE…not serviceable…he should be there with Haynesworth or Kevin Williams…Tommie Harris or Warren Sapp in his prime…Come on
Same with Warren…disappears for entire games.. can’t have that sh****…you know… paid $5million a year…he CANT BE FREEEKN AVERAGE
and Terdell Sands…I mean the excuses for those 3 ended today BIG TIME BECAUSE THE DEFENSE REALLY RESTS ON THEIR SHOULDERS.
Think about it…even if our offense becomes the next “Greatest Show on Turf” what good will it do if teams just pound the rock and play ball control…then we will be forced to pass all the time.
Not a hater..just going off of what my untrained eyes have seen the past couple of years.
Talk about Russell being in the building…who’s asking about the D-Lineman….THOSE ARE THE GUYS GASPING FOR AIR

i will always be a raider fan and i seriously hope this draft surprises alot of people. i still cant believe we didnt draft any o-line/d-line. i’m not high on any of these picks except maybe mike mitchell at safety. i have to say that if most of these picks work out not many of us will apologize for bashing al and when the season starts we will all be cheering our team on. listen its a done deal now lets all move on. that being said i wanna be the first to admit i said some things out of anger about al and these selections but the reality is i will support the team, GO RAIDERS! p.s. i wish i hadnt quit smoking weed and drinking cause i need a release

Tommy Kelly: Trash
Gerrard Warren: Trash
Terdell Sands: Trash
Whatever scrubs end up backing them up: Useless
Welcome to another season of bottom 5 run defense.

Ouch. NFL Network just reviewed Eugene Monroe. Mayock’s #1 player in the entire draft. Good bet to be a long-time pro bowler.
Big need for us. It all starts with the line. Zone blocking takes care of the run, but Monroe was the premium LT pass blocker.

I know Stryker I like this kid. I remember when Mizzou picked him up, and he’s never let the team down. He’s going to be be a good pick, but needs to put on some weight.
