Filling out the roster

The Raiders typically don’t announce undrafted free agents until they show up at the first minicamp (unless they’re on the Chris Johnson secret-signing plan and they don’t announce it at all).

Various reports have the Raiders signing Florida Atlantic linebacker Frantz joseph, Kent State wide receiver Shawn Bayes and linebacker David Nixon so far.

The San Francisco Chronicle is also reporting the signing of Harvard defensive end Desmond Bryant.

You’ll find many of the reports before I do, and the players will probably end up coming to camp with the Raiders.

Chances of any of them making on the Week 1 53-man roster are slim, however, although you get the occasional John Madsen and Chris Carr.

Others, like Louis Rankin and Marcel Reece last year, make the pracitce squad and eventually get called to the 53-man roster.

But beware _ they’re not Raiders until they show up on May 8. There have been write-ups in local papers in past years which have players signing with the Raiders only to find out they had not, and instances when local reporters are checking in with players they’re sure have signed with the Raiders, only to find out otherwise.

It happened with a linebacker a couple of years ago, I want to say it was Cal Poly-SLO linebacker Jordan Beck, who later did come in for a tryout, but never did sign a contract.

You really don’t know for sure until they arrive at minicamp.

I dont doubt that the Raiders can run the ball consistently, but when its 3rd and long, how will russell and the offense convert? 3rd down is a problem on offense and defense

    Brien,

Mitchell and Heyward-Bey deserve the support. They aren’t crying and complaining…Mitchell said on Sirius…”the Raiders believed in me and that’s all that matters. Now its up to me”

He really sounded like a veteran.

Look, I am pragmatic. These guys could become busts three yrs from now. I don’t wear rose colored glasses. But the media and others are criticising the players themselves…heard a broadcaster say Mitchell selling cell phones at the mall garbage…

Heyward-Bey said he’s going to work. He didn’t diss his school, the QB he played with…he said the right things about winning games.

Dissing Davis is fine. Not trading down to get these guys was unbelieveable in its lack of strategy and in some cases outright arrogance.

But the players…Mitchell and D-HB don’t deserve to hear they are not worthy players. No one picked this weekend has played a college snap.

I take lesson in this episode. Ignore the haters and work hard. I look forward to watching Mitchell and D-HB develop with the Silver and Black

Brien, that’s why they got Slade and Sulak…to be the SAM. They brought in Frantz to be a spec team but my hunch is he is going to kcik some a$$ in camp. My only critique of him (from a fan) is he seems a little stiff moving around. Scouts say his hips are not fluid. But he is the only guy I have seen that can shed a block on our roster.

only if we run consistently with dmac-bush. not farglass. consistent running with farglass is 3yds, -1yd, 3yds, punt.

seattle removed franchise tag from hill. really think we should look at him. he would probably be too costly. i know alot of people like the undrafted kid from florida atlantic but is he really going to be able to give a push to kirk. i hope he is a diamond in the rough. need to get stronger at lb to get off those damn blocks. it is great that kirk is the leading tackler, but when you are making those tackles 10 yards downfield it really doesn’t help things.

    autumn wind,

if the whole locker room was filled with farglasses we would only score 7 points per year.

    _________

well obviously i’m not speaking about the man physically; he does well to punch above his weight. i’m talking about his work ethic, his motor, his ronnie lott-esque disregard for his own safety while always laying it all on the line. it is the lack of this kind of man’s conviction that has crippled the raiders as much as anything else over recent seasons. i will agree that i want to see more of bush and dmac because they are younger and more dynamic athletes but fargas brings his own lunch to the table as well.

If we can run consistently there won’t be too many 3rd and longs. If we can run consistently we’ll have shots down the field. I just know we won’t be seeing run-run-pass every series like Kiffin did and blamed it on Russell’s inexperience. Al and Cable have said enough for it to be clear that they’re putting a lot more on Jamarcus’ arm this year.

  • http://snotmerch.com/ Lynn from Snot

3rd down was a problem because we had no go to guy Miller was stuck blocking and we basically had no 3rd down receiver. Curry was horrible and Walker was MIA. We’ll find out if that guy exist this year.

    Jeremy,

One of Frantz’s BIGGEST strength is that he punishes the blocker. He is terrible in the measurement department but he absolutely kills the blocker and runners.

True, we lacked playmakers but did progressively better once Cable started calling plays. The way Kiff & co. called plays last year made it tough on the players we did have out there.

The criticism is not even fair. Again, Davis reaching and throwing caution to the wind is FAIR game….

But lets look at the players…D-HB was slated to go to Baltimore or the Giants in the FIRST ROUND! So, he goes a few spots early…he’s still a top 32 prospect. Hell, ain’t one of the issues with this draft the fact the guys rated in the lower part of the 1st or early 2nd are as good as the top 10?

Well, DHB matches what the Raiders are trying to do. That’s what New England and Pittsburgh does. Draft players for their system. The guy was still a 1st round prospect….now suddenly he can’t catch and all the side comments about Crabtree in San fran…screw all that. Let’s go DHB

as for Mitchell. I admit I never heard of him. But he did make 15 visits to other professional football teams. But even with that, to say the guy doesn’t belong on the field is ridiculous.

I might just have to go buy a Heyward-Bey and Mitchell jersey. It will be hilarious when those guys show up and start making plays.

    53 Man Roster?

QB – Jamarcus Russell, Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski (3)
RB – Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Justin Fargas (6)
    FB – Oren O’Neal, Marcel Reese (8)
WR – Derrius Heyward-Bey, Javon Walker, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Chaz Schilens, Arman Shields, Louis Murphy (14)
TE – Justin Miller, Darrell Strong, Brandon Myers (17)
LT – Mario Henderson, Erik Pears (19)
LG – Robert Gallery, Paul McQuistan (21)
    C – Samson Satele, Chris Morris (23)
RG – Cooper Carlisle, Marcus Johnson (25)
RT – Khalif Barnes, Cornell Green (27)

LE – Derrick Burgess, Jay Richardson (29)
DT – Tommy Kelly, Gerard Warren, Terdell Sands, Ryan Boschetti (33)
RE – Trevor Scott, Matt Shaughnessey (35)
LOLB – Ricky Brown, Stryker Sulak (37)
MLB – Kirk Morrison, Frantz Joseph, Jon Condo (40)
ROLB – Thomas Howard, Slade Norris, Isaiah Ekejuiba (43)
CB – Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Johnson, Stanford Routt, Justin Miller, John Bowie (48)
FS – Hiram Eugene, Tyvon Branch (50)
SS – Michael Huff, Mike Mitchell (52)
    P – Shane Lechler
    K – Sebastian Janikowski (54)

Now…I have my roster set at 54 players instead of 53 players so I would have to cut one of these guys. Its hard to cut Javon Walker because he restructured his contract and hes the only veteran. We drafted so many LB/DE’s that it is tough to cut one because they’re so similiar and these guys are special teams type guys. I left out Sam Williams and he will likely stay based on scholarship but this could finally be the year hes gone.

damn everyone hating on Fargas but the dude ran for 1000 yards in 8 starts LOL.. the dude isnt a HOF’er but he isnt garbage the way some have made him out to be.. he is a hard runner.. ala crash test dummy.. he is injury prone due to his running style.. but to say he sucks is pretty short sighted.. he is a capable back who has helped this team.. Bush didnt get much of an oppertunity because early on when he did.. he averaged 1.2 yards a carry.. then broke out against a Tampa defense that had already quit.. Mcfadden was hurt all season.. he doesnt have a history of injury so maybe thats a fluke.. but you cant get rid of Fargas until Mcfadden proves the injuries were just a fluke.. and Bush is more then a guy who had 1 big game against a defense that quit…

  • 24

Nader64 – Richardson is the best run stopper and the biggest DE we have. Hes still young so I don’t see him gone.

  • 24

SnB – Possibly. I see Reece sticking because Oren O’Neal may not be 100%.

Also…Could this be the year the Raiders give up on John Bowie? We could go into the season with 4 Corners and 4 Safeties.

I’ve noticed a few of you guys making comments that since Rob Ryan is now gone, our defense will improve. Where were you idiots the last six years…out to sleep? When Kiffin tried to get the Ryan fired, some of you idiots jumped on Ryan’s side and backed Al “the fool” Davis for backing Ryan. Now, after 6 years of allowed destruction by Ryan and approved by “the fool” … you’re making the point that Ryan is gone. Get off it. Why didn’t you open your pie holes years ago, or at least last year.

Don’t respond, just buy a photo picture of Rob Ryan licking the boots of Al Davis.

Thanks for removing the name Sam Williams, the dude who has something bad on Davis, it’s the only logical explanation why this fool remains, year after year. Them to boot, we always have to hear from these defenders who claim: “He’s good on special teams.” He needs to go.

Also, we don’t need Condo and longer. John Bowie remains because of the Randy Moss trade, but Al needs to chack it up already, it’s getting old and boring. Same story with Huff. Al needs to admit that he was a draft bust, like so many many other picks made by Al Davis, based on senile thinking.

the losses we’ve suffered are in no small part due to a lack of that kind of leadership. obviously, to succeed in the nfl, or any team sport, you need talent and skill as well, no doubt about it.

i’m just bemused by the people who seem to utterly disregard the mental component of the game, the grit and determination that a hard worker brings to the overall make-up of a team. perhaps fargas’s critics have never personally experienced the difference a man like him can bring to a locker room.

there is a reason why fargas has won the “commitment to excellence” award for the last 2 seasons, voted for by the men who know him best: his fellow raiders.

  • SharkCatcher

Everybody is pushing the panic button because of Mel,

Mel’s biggest blunder might have been his assessment of the Bolts. He gave the Chargers a C for what still could become a ‘74 Steelers type of draft: “I like end/linebacker Shawne Merriman as an addition to the pass rush, but the rest of the players the Chargers selected were taken a little early. Defensive tackle Luis Castillo did not have a first-round grade and receiver Vincent Jackson was a reach in the second round as the Chargers were desperate to add a receiver. Darren Sproles should be a nice situational back who can also return kicks, but the remainder of the players San Diego took were more toward the undrafted free-agent category.”

Um, Merriman has been one of the best players from a bust-filled 2005 first round, and Castillo has become a very good defensive lineman. Jackson is developing into an excellent option in San Diego’s supercharged passing game, and Sproles has shown that he’s much more than a “nice situational back,” as that franchise tag confirms.
