Sorry guys,
Just found out we’re going to have to hold off our “Inside the Raiders” chat until next Tuesday (May 12). Players will be arriving later this week for minicamp on Friday, when Jerry McDonald will begin posting updates from the complex in Alameda.

Shawne Merriman will be an Oakland Raider next year (2010)
the dolts already had Jyles Tucker, Shaun Phillips & Stephen Cooper besides Merriman. Then they add Kevin Burnett from Dallas and Larry English in the draft. Merriman is in the final year of his contract …
May 5th, 2009 at 8:35 am
well, thanks for the update after getting us all excited, I guess we can resort to random normal knowledge of the team and its players and have a discussion on why things run the way they do.

Merriman is gonna get jacked up by Lorenzo Neal this year like he did by MJD from the Jags! I hope we sign Neal!

Merriman is very good, but he can’t recover from injury very well now that he’s off the ‘roids. I doubt he’ll make it through the year.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Yeah it will be interesting to see how he plays coming off MAJOR knee surgery. Not only that, if he is truly off the roids….he will not recover as fast…remember Barry Bonds….soon as he went off the juice, he started having injury issues.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:56 am
have you seen him working out in camp with the dolts? I doubt he’s off the roids …
they showed him on NFL Live last night
May 5th, 2009 at 8:59 am
I think JerryMac is writing a book about Mike Mitchell. He seemed enamored of the pick immediately and he did admit that he been telephoning old coaches and rivals for input. Thus he is plenty busy without having to plop himself into a chair to chat with the Silver and Black horde for an hour.

We had Brown, Alston, Williams & Thomas at one OLB spot last year. two of those players landed on IR and the other two are only on the roster for special teams use
I understand we’ve added Norris & Sulak in the draft. Then brought in undrafted players Nixon & Joseph.
If we’re talking about talent & production (not potential), Isn’t Merriman an upgrade at LB ???
no guarantee we’re going to be able to (or want to) lock up both Kirk & Thomas Howard next season anyhow
May 5th, 2009 at 9:04 am
You can be as strong as an OX…..but the knee is a tricky thing. So much torque and resistance on that injured area….I wouldn’t be surprised if he re-injures it.

usually takes 2 years for athletes with cl injuries to get back to full speed anyway, i just don’t see him being a force this year like before.

we dont blitz enough for him anyway, he likes the sack #’s.

Perhaps Samson and Khalif will grasp just the right amount of their new cut-blocking techniques to do a tagteam and take out RoidBoy for good, just as Guided Missile Mike can blow up both Tomlinson and Sproles. An opener to remember.

Just read another article on DHB. One of the criticisms is he was average in a weak conference. He had like 3 different QB’s while he was there, and they weren’t very good. Imagine the numbers he could have put up at LSU with Jamarcus. I am willing to bet that he would have had some big games there. What about even putting him in Texas Tech’s offense…

no doubt but why????
May 5th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Frantz Joseph and Desmond Bryant are the guys to watch as undrafted FA’s but this David Nixon guy seems pretty interesting too.
Here’s an article from cnnsi.com about undrafted free agents, Nixon made their list of players to watch:
“Every NFL draft season, we fixate on the top 15 percent of the incoming talent pool, breaking down every possible angle that affects the potential order of how the top names will come off the board.
And every year, almost unbeknownst to most of us, there’s a new wave of Wes Welkers, James Harrisons, and Willie Parkers entering the league so below the radar screen they’re virtually undetectable.
We know them now, of course. Now that Welker is one of the most unstoppable weapons in the game as New England’s slot receiver, Harrison is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and Parker a Super Bowl hero of the recent past.
But we didn’t know them then, because they all — and many more like them — made their names in the NFL without the benefit of being drafted.
In some cases, they didn’t even get invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, which this year featured well over 300 prospects displaying their “draftability” before almost every personnel decision-maker in the league.
The list of those who made it in the NFL the hard way is an impressive one, and it’s filled with undrafted players who were cut multiple times, or forced to hang around on the fringes of the game until their opportunity came, and they seized it.
“It’s the mystery of our business: why first-round picks are sometimes busts, and why seventh-rounders and free agents go to Honolulu,” said Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, the man responsible for signing Gates as a collegiate free agent for San Diego in 2003 and Welker in 2004.
“But it happens every year, and it’ll happen again this year. There are guys who will go on to have great careers in the NFL after their name didn’t come off that board draft weekend.”
All undrafted free agents have some significant hurdles to overcome, including non-typical NFL size, a lack of big-time college experience, ill-timed injuries or not having a natural position.
“A lot of times a guy can just get caught up in the wash, even in his own school,” Smith said. “There’s always a story to be told about every guy. … You have to cling to the intangibles, because all of these guys have got something going for them. Sometimes we take a chance with a guy who’s got a work ethic and some toughness to him.”
Predicting who won’t get drafted is almost as foolhardy as trying to predict the exact order of the first round.
But the reality that some very good players will slip through the cracks every year is the inspiration for our inaugural Welker Watch List — a modest compilation of 10 prospects who weren’t invited to the combine, but who we still project to make the NFL some day, and maybe even star in it.
7.- David Nixon, LB, BYU — The ex-Cougar was the Mountain West Conference’s all-time leading tackler, and in his 6-3, 233-pound build, NFL talent scouts see the potential for him to fill out quickly and man an outside linebacker position.
Nixon gets high marks for his intelligence and ability to master a difficult defense at BYU. He also got great experience in pass coverage, which is rare for college linebackers entering the NFL.
A former Mormon missionary and Eagle Scout, he’s more mature than most collegiate prospects, and turned heads at his pro day with a 40 time in the low 4.6’s.”
- Nixon seems like a nice all-around player, he has decent size, he’s fast, he makes tackles for loss, gets some sacks and some int’s as well. I read that he was also recruited by bigger schools such as LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Arizona. By the way, BYU has actually been a top 25 program for the past 3 seasons.

May 5th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Well, that turned out longer than expected… but still, I see Frantz Joseph, Desmond Bryant, Jerome Boyd, Jon Compas (zbs type of blocker) and David Nixon as good pickups with some potential.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:59 am
How sweet would it be if in the pre-season game against the Niners….Mitchell lays out that B!tch A$$ Crabtree.

I really am impressed with the youth movement. We can all agree that Al isnt into rebuilding. So he has to be listening to someone. I for one am sick of signing all these overpriced busted down vets.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Rockstar,
why would you surmise Nixon to the practice squad? The all-time leading tackler in Mountain West history obviously knows how to play the game already. He’s fast, he’s smart and God knows the Raiders need somebody who will tackle reliably.

walter makes the team he knows the system and we could always get an 8th rounder for him if it dsnt work him being thrid string clipboard guy!!!
May 5th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Why would I want Shawn Merriman on our team? Hes a piece of sh!t. He’s overrated, he was only decent when he took steroids and now he has a shredded knee. The system he was in allowed him to constantly blitz the QB. That was his biggest mark and while he was on steroids, his stats sky rocketed. Once he got off the juice after getting caught, he was non-existent. It was Wade Phillips who made him look good and now Phillips is making DeMarcus Ware in Dallas look good but Ware doesn’t need to take steroids to be a good player.
Fuk Merriman. I’d rather have Alvis Whitted back as my starting WR then to have that stupid idiot on our team.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Gradkowski. He’s well versed in Paul Hackett’s system and has been taking part in the QB school in Alameda
May 5th, 2009 at 10:12 am
TW
David Nixon is actually a third cousin of the former President.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:12 am
I think Walter is better that Gradowski… let the donks have em… I think the dischargers would pick up walter
May 5th, 2009 at 10:12 am
I want to say that Gradkowski would stay and Walter would go but its hard to fathom the Raiders having 2 backups who can’t throw that far. If anything, Walter may not make the team if he doesn’t show up to camp but that would be a force out if anything.

24: time to take off the Raider shades and be real for a second. Shawne Merriman is a good player. He’s better than any LB on our roster even with a busted knee. If you don’t remember watching this h0m0 crash into our RB’s for a loss on the play you must have a pretty terrible memory. He’s only been gone for a year

that’s why Slade Norris won’t be starting either. He’ll back up Thomas Howard at weak side
May 5th, 2009 at 10:25 am
RaiderRockstar – I’m sorry. Steroids made Merriman. Without them…his drive, passion and aggression were greatly diminished. The substance made him, not the other way around.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:27 am
I know a good player when I see one and I can tell you who I like from each team regardless of division foe or not and Merriman was heavily overrated.
For example…LaDainian Tomlinson in his prime was an incredible back. I love the type of running back he is but I hate the punishment he dishes out to us and I don’t like when he acts like a crybaby but all that aside, he was or maybe still is a dominant force.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Rockstar,
you’ve got it all worked out for the roster already. So, I guess you know exactly what the Marshall Plan is for the defensive personnel three days before the initial practice and 4 1/2 months before the season opener. No alterations, everything set in stone. Wonder why guys even bother to show up.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:30 am
RRS
Im cool with that… I sure wish he could work out @ LB tho…
May 5th, 2009 at 10:30 am
David Nixon is not a Safety, at 6′3 233 he’s not undersized either, but the practice squad sounds about right for the guy unless he can beat out Jon Alston, Ricky Brown or Sam Williams.
On the other hand, Jerome Boyd used to be one of the best Safeties in the country out of high school and despite being moved to OLB he still has the size (6′2 219)and speed (4.48) to project as a Pro Safety.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Happy Cinco de Mayo to our hispanic raider brethren!
the French are lame anyways … stay in Canada
May 5th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Rockstar – I didn’t say I was against steroids, I’m saying Merriman had an advantage over most of the players which made him look better than them for a short period of time. Once he stopped using them, his skills came back down to earth and he was just another player on the field that blended in. When the Raiders were good, EVERYONE was practically on steroids but the playing field as even. Thats much different.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:35 am

Its not that we are against Steroid per say its more like we just hate the Chargers and that gay Steroid induced dance Merriman does.

Melly, listen to me. I am your father. Darrius Heyward-Bey will make an excellent pro. good character. taller & faster than Crabtree or Maclin and comes from a pro style offense. should make the transition to the pros much easier and give the Raiders offense yet another dynamic weapon. With the right coaching and growth from QB Jamarcus Russell in his 3rd NFL season this team could surprise some people and finally compete for the AFC West crown.
P.S. – do your research on this kid from Ohio named Mike Mitchell. he’s been impressive in private workouts and at his pro day. his stock is rising!

Rockstar,
I have respect for your posts here. I took exception to delegating the kid to the practice squad sight unseen. If that is the known circumstance, the only place I could end up, and I was the rookie LB I would not come here. I would go somewhere to be allowed to compete for a roster spot.

May 5th, 2009 at 10:58 am
M Lonetree – Barrett Robbins wasn’t on steroids. He had schizophrenia. What I am trying to say is, not every player in the NFL is “normal”. Everyone has a different background and the game itself is tougher than hell. Dealing with the players in the locker room, having millions of dollars, coming from tough neighborhoods, getting hurt on a consistent basis from the impact of the game, dealing with coaches, the media and everything else that is situated with the NFL puts these guys under ALOT of pressure. Thats why some guys do steroids in the first place. Its hard enough to make it into the NFL alone and these substances pave their way and help them reach their goals and get paid.
With all that being said, there are many other difficult things these guys go through. Phillips could have had a tough upbringing or maybe he has “Pacman” syndrome but these guys live their lives aggressively due to their sport and lifestyle. These guys are like warriors so obviously they’re going to lose their cool away from the game of football. That doesn’t mean they’re on steroids, there are plenty of other issues to make these guys have problems.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:58 am

paaaaaaalease… They get paid millions of $$$$$$$$$ to PLAY Football… i wish I was so lucky as to have that type of problem and physical ability…
May 5th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I took exception to delegating the kid to the practice squad sight unseen. If that is the known circumstance, the only place I could end up, and I was the rookie LB I would not come here. I would go somewhere to be allowed to compete for a roster spot.
***
you’re right, if you look at it from a player’s perspective. However, the coach makes the final decisions. Sulak & Norris will have every opportunity to win roster spots because we used draft picks on them. Alston & Williams are valuable on special teams. Brown, Morrison & Howard are returning starters nearly etched in stone. Isaiah Ekejiuba is a lock for ST, so is Jon Condo. I don’t see where Frantz Joseph fits in, much less David Nixon and we need a MLB in the worst way!
May 5th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Those gawd awful Denver Broncos uniforms are so groos, man that will be hard to watch that team. They will look like the washing machine was not invented yet.

Tough series loss for the Sharks. You get emotionally involved and next thing you know, the season is over. I enjoyed the Sharks this year, saw on the tube about 65 games. I believe the injuries had some of the reason they looked out of sync.
I would like to see them sigh Moen, and make a decision on the blue line.

M Lonetree – Well…Psychology was my major, Sociology was my minor. That doesn’t mean I earned a degree from it but I was definately interested in it. I tend to overanalyze most situations whereas most people tend to look at it at face value and without getting too deep into it. Its all good.
Most would rather keep it simple and see football as a game and nothing more. All of the personal stuff that goes with it and the fact that these guys playing the game are human doesn’t factor in with how people view them. They might as well be robots as long as the person watching is entertained. We live in a selfish society.

408 – You completely contradicted yourself with your Barrett Robbins statement…
“24 Im just saying…. I have no sympathy for superstar athletes who cant deal with the pressure.. Well Ok feel bad 4 B.Robbins even if he did cost us the SB (IMO)..”
That is just plain biased because Robbins was a Raider. You gave him a pass while you judge the others. If you’re not going to have sympathy for the athletes, then you can’t make any exceptions because that wouldn’t be credible.

May 5th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Wow, those are some UUUUUUGLY logos. Although I do like the alternate one from 62-67 because it looks like a cartoon depiction of the proverbial beaten dead horse. I’ll call it the MR horse logo.

dont get It twisted… I am not judging any 1.. I said I have no sympathy for them… Of course I give B.Rob a pass he was a RAIDER and a damn good 1…
May 5th, 2009 at 11:25 am
A serious note, those old AFL uniforms really had no creative code. I’m amazed how ugly the color and logos were.
Fast forward today, could you see anyone buying hats, t-shirts or game jersey with those colors, yikes gag!!!
May 5th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I like the old RAIDER LOGO.. and I the white Jerseys with the silver &black #’s and letters are awesome IMO

Just game one. Laker’s in 6. They were off too long.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:35 am
I was in a Raider Image store yesterday buying a gift and conversing with the store clerk. He mentioned that the face on the Raider shield was designed after a cowboy actor. Anyone know who the actor was? The clerk didn’t know and I’d never heard the story before.

I agree, I just hate to see the home court advantage switch to Houston.
I sensed when Yao got hurt and came back the Rockets really picked up their game, the Lakers never matched their intensity.
These series have so many twist that a bad call or a bad bounce can really put you out very quickly.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:45 am
The original team colors were black, gold and white. The now-familiar team emblem of a pirate (or “raider”) wearing a football helmet was created, reportedly a rendition of actor Randolph Scott.[9]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Raiders
I had heard it before but forgot the actors name. Years before my time.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:48 am
I’ll be at the Monday night game, the Chargers uniforms won’t be that bad, they just look like egg yolks running down their sides.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am
The retro uniforms will generate some business for the NFL, I just don’t see very much.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Its not that we are against Steroid per say its more like we just hate the Chargers and that gay Steroid induced dance Merriman does.

I would have liked the dance had he been eating QB’s for our defense….just sayin

Raider Dell,
Yao is a monster when he is allowed to establish position. At 7′6″ and 300lbs+ he dominates. Must be made to run and switch outside his comfort zone. He is a 2nd tier center in the NBA. IMHO

3-4 LBs are diff than 4-3 LBs, especially OLBs like Merriman.
OLBs in a 3-4 scheme are tweeners/ Players who played End at college, but they are undersized and have lots of speed to rush the passer and also cover.
If Merriman was to play for a 4-3 team like us, he would play DE at 6′5 270 and not LB!!!
235 is too small for a SLB!!!!!
It’s not all about size, but does he fit the scheme??
Look at a Tampa 2 or cover 2, you need fast LB who can cover. Who cares what size they are.!! PB OLB C June is only 225!!!

408, are you kidding? Favre in Minny would be great! He may play for 5 more years once he realizes all he has to do is hand off to AP 30 times, and throw some screens to Harvin and an occasional bomb to that WR they got from the Bears last year…can’t remember his name…
And then we could watch him stick it to the Packers twice a year! I would love it.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
King James: MVP
King James is better than KB.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Don’t worry Raider O, Kobe will be just fine…he’ll drop 45 on the Rockets in game 2.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Maybe but I’m sick of the guy… He is a whiner IMO…
May 5th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Favre Is Done!! He is 40!!!
May 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Desmond Bryant should be given an opportunity at defensive end….6′6 288….hopefully he has some quickness to go with that big size.
I hope they give him a tryout there. Let him be the base DE and serve as a rotational guy inside.
Then go ahead and cut Boschetti or Joseph…or SAnds
May 5th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Haha the Lakers lol. Kobe can go score 45 all he wants. It wont be an easy 45 and he will not have his teammates involved if thats the case. Rockets did a great thing last night. Would be a great month of May to see Lakers not advance

If you see posts left up that still contain racial slurs and flat out foul language and then a posts gets deleted for no justifiable reason it makes you wonder?
