Neal, Russell added to roster
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, May 8th, 2009 at 10:45 am in Oakland Raiders.
A couple of updates to the roster by John Herrera on the field:
FB Lorenzo Neal is wearing No. 41, with Louis Rankin wearing No. 40.
RB Gary Russell, who has experience with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, was signed and is wearing No. 23.
QB Danny Soutwick is in on a tryout basis.
More to come later . . .

Third.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:48 am
When did we sign Neal?
May 8th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Who the hell is Danny Southwick? I hope one of the 18 RB’s on the roster can play FB.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Why Neal??!
Isn’t he 40+!!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:49 am
O,
Why nooooooo?
May 8th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Lorenzo Neal will help us in the those third and 1 situations quite a bit. Good signing Al, very low-risk.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Hey Jerry how about some hi-tech to this site and give us a live feed streaming video… you can do it!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:50 am
I’ll say it again. It’s finally time for some FOOTBALL! sweet!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:51 am
nice… hopefully neal still has another season in him
May 8th, 2009 at 10:51 am
O,
There is no downside to this signing….he is insurance. He is a mean SOB….who is a Pro Bowl fullback. Perfect bridge for our young players…..will be a full grown man in the run game, and knows his Sh!t in pass protection.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Is Neal any better than bringing Crockett out of retirement?
May 8th, 2009 at 10:52 am
YEYEYEYEYEYYEYEYEYEYYEYE
LOVE NEAL AND RUSSELL BOTH!!!!!!
JERRY GOOD WORK MAN I FEEL LIKE IM THERE!!!!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Crockett. Man I miss that guy.
Yeah, I think Neal has more mentoring to offer.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
LEP,
As insurance yes, but he’s old!!
I would rather sign another FB later, a few will be cut before the reg season.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Raiders underdogs by 6 opening day.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Lorenzo Neal is an older version of O’neil… This is a great signing at a low cost for us, O’neil gets to learn the ins and outs from a FB that has blocked for more thousand yard backs in NFL history. He also brings a proven leader and work ethic to the offense. I love this signing, there is no way it backfires.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Yes….Crockett was a stud, but everyone Neal has blocked for has been a 1,000 yard rusher.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Nice! Lorenzo Neal in the house can only be a good thing.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Hey Jerry be careful with John Herrera he might be on a bad mood today.
Neal brings attitude and experience to the FB spot, Lawton was OK last year, and as for O.O. if he is recovering fine, he must watch and learn from Neal.
Come on man is just the first practice of minicamp day 1… give him a chance… Jerry will give us an update soon.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Burgess MIA
Zach Miller has an injury
Oren and Shields are dressed, but not practicing.
Shields is done, if he can’t even get healthy for the first mini-camp. What is wrong with that guy.

May 8th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Neal is the best signing of the offseason for the offense by far. He brings a tough veteran leadership to a young offense. I see him having a Jerry Rice/Rich Gannon type effect on the offense as far as putting people in check and pushing them to work harder.
May 8th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I dont get it.. NEAL? running back coach… maybe! not starting FB? he’s 38 yrs old turning 50! hopefully he can pop some livetra and hang in there!

Triple B,
>????? aside from burgess whos is always MIA were you gettin this info brother???
May 8th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Mentoring? Neal by far and away is the best fullback we’ve had since J. Ritchie. Neal is a real fullback and one of the best in football period. We finally get some bonified proven talent at a position and the guy get’s hated on. Just plain sad.
May 8th, 2009 at 11:01 am
O,
Just wait….you will LOVE this guy! There is no negative to this….he will be a great leader….great locker room guy….and TOUGH!!!

________________
Burgess hasn’t done crap in 2 years he needs to be here proving something, Miller being injured could be a good thing cause it forces Russell to work in his receivers and build chemistry without his safety blanket being there. Shields doesn’t look like he will be making the roster since he seems to be made of glass.

I guess Satele and Barnes are still getting up to speed with the zone-blocking, which makes perfect sense. I like that Bey and Schilens are out there right away, apparently Walker is on the sidelines watching, sans helmet.
May 8th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Luke, I’m your father Luke Lawton is pure garbage. He get’s punked at the point of attack on almost every running play that he’s involved in. Oren O’neil or OO as some of you are attempting to call him is nowhere in the same league as L. Neil. Before giving the guy a nickname how about allowing him to prove something on the field first, which to date he hasn’t. O’neil was a project fullback draft pick-up who needs time to develop, no need comparing him to a real pro-bowl caliber fullback like Neal.

repost:
Here’s something to consider when talking about Justin Fargas. He’s played 6 NFL season for the Raiders and only has 698 carries and 60 catches during that span. He’s been hurt EVERY season …
LaDainian Tomlinson has played 8 NFL seasons for the Chargers and has a whopping 2657 carries and 510 catches during that span.
yet somehow LT still has more tread on the tires than Fargas and he’s taken less of a pounding. less frequent injuries. isn’t that sad?
1 TD every 100 carries isn’t good enough fellas!

Neal’s a good signing if he’s still got gas left. He blocked for LT for those thousand yard seasons and was part of the reason the Ravens had such a productive running game.
He’s olde. but he knows how to destroy second level LBs and is a smart insurance policy in case.
Plus, he may be camp fodder brought in to help and take reps. Don’t know if he’ll make the final roster remember.

Andrew Walter has started and played in a handful of games, over a couple of seasons with different coaches and players. The one constant: he stinks, turns the balls over and looks likes he wants to cry.
Huff at least excelled last year in special teams, and has had a few moments in pass coverage over the years. If he was a 3rd rounder like Walter, we wouldn’t hate him as much.

Andrew Walter deserves a shot in the NFL more than Huff does.
*******************************
Andrew Walter has started and played in a handful of games, over a couple of seasons with different coaches and players. The one constant: he stinks, turns the balls over and looks likes he wants to cry.
Huff at least excelled last year in special teams, and has had a few moments in pass coverage over the years. If he was a 3rd rounder like Walter, we wouldn’t hate him as much.
===================================
The fact Walter endured a legendary beating in 2006 is reason enough for him to get a shot elsewhere. Talk about paying dues…
Huff on the other hand has had ample field time and failed to produce…so far.
Nnamdi has predicted a Huff break out the last 2 years, but maybe, just maybe, in 09′ he’ll be right…

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
OK, I’ll give you Kerry. Totally blocked him out. But Mccown and Brooks, no way. They both reeked. Walter at least has some upside in a conventional system. In fact, I bet he would do well in TN. Similar style to Collins.
May 8th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Walter is not a Kiffin QB. No QB in Art Shell’s system would have done much better. So no fair assessment of AW yet IMO. He and Huff are equally uninspiring since their demotions and need a change of scenery. I know Walter does. I’ll hold out a trace of hope for Huff but it would really floor me if he turned it around this year.
