DHB sits it out

Notes from Saturday’s second minicamp practice:
After a rough morning practice that included dropped passes and counsel from Jeff Garcia, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey mostly watched during the second session.
The No. 1 draft pick, who at one point Saturday morning was being worked on by the training staff for an apparent cramp, went through some drills but did not participate in any seven-on-seven or team drills.
Raiders coach Tom Cable, who addresses the media once in the afternoon, declined to update Heyward-Bey’s status.
“He said he’ll get into it tomorrow,” senior executive John Herrera said.
– Al Davis made his first minicamp appearance a little before 5 p.m., watching on a cart and departing before the session was finished.
– Guard Cooper Carlisle found himself on the ground during the no-contact drills courtesy of Tommy Kelly two times in a span of three plays.
– Tight end Chris O’Neill, an undrafted free agent from Boise State, made the best catch of minicamp so far, reaching up and cradling a one-handed catch from Jeff Garcia more than 20 yards downfield behind Michael Huff and Jerome Boyd, the Oregon linebacker who is being played at safety.
– During a seven-on-seven drill, Garcia spied McFadden with one-on-one coverage by rookie free-agent linebacker David Nixon of BYU. Garcia pump faked and found McFadden for a 45-yard gain down the sideline not far from where Davis was watching practice in his cart.
– Russell’s passing continued to be hit and miss, with a lot short throws to running backs and tight ends with the occasional attempt downfield. He found Louis Murphy on a deep cross on one attempt, and later threw a high wobbler down the left sideline toward Murphy that missed badly out of bounds with Justin Miller in coverage.
Practice ended with Russell completing a sideline route to Murphy.
– The second session, particularly in the early stages, was much more spirited and energetic.
– Early in the session, a hawk emerging from the field beyond the fence at the Oakland Airport flew through the air with a snake and landed on a nearby communications tower, where it came under the scrutiny of a few other birds who were diving at his prey.
Some support staff and a few players were watching, until returning their gaze to the field when play resumed _ all except Shane Lechler, who never punted in the session and could afford to watch the show.
– Tommy Kelly jumped offsides during a team session, with five yards marked off for the offense since the first down markers were in use. The Raiders bypassed recognition of similar fouls in the first session.
– A good sign offensively _ two well-executed screen passes, one from Russell to Michael Bush and another from Bruce Gradkowski to Louis Rankin.
– Aside from Heyward-Bey, those who did not participate included left guard Robert Gallery, defensvie tackle Gerard Warren, defensive end Derrick Burgess, tight end Zach Miller, center Samson Satele and fullback Oren O’Neal. Linebacker Ricky Brown returned after sitting out the first session, and deflected and nearly intercepted a Garcia pass.
The Raiders wrap up their minicamp with a single practice Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

In response to a discussion in an earlier forum…
the qb when I fell in love with the Raiders at age 7 was Jim Plunkett
my favorite offensive raider was Marcus Allen, my favorite defensive raider was mike haynes

Practice must have really been rough to watch if this is a highlight worth mentioning in the blog. I guess us readers will never get how tough it is.

So, mistabrown insists we don’t have any type of offensive system. Wow. That is the dumbest thing he has ever posted, and he thinks we tried the fake FG against KC on 2nd down. I guess in mistabrowns pychotic world, when Jamarcus goes into the huddle against New England or any other team, he says, “OK, guys, just go out.”

Its only mini camp so its not worth getting mad about anything but I have only one thing.
Why is Jamarcus Russell so inaccurate with his passes? Heres my thing…If you’ve been playing QB all of your life, throwing the ball should come naturally so if you’re constantly throwing passes everywhere but to the receiver on a consistent basis, somethings wrong. As a QB, throwing a basic thing you’ve been doing your whole life so how can you fuk it up that badly? This was a problem during last season as well so it should have been fixed by now. I just don’t want that to continue.

Welcome to JaMarcus Russell football. Oakland’s only hope is that the ground game is top 5 and the screen game is consistently effective. If Miller, Bush, and McBabyDaddy can manage a few RAC 1st downs, maybe the Big Dummy’s deceptive 60%+ completion percentage will remain intact. If Al expects this guy to actually become a vertical game QB, he’s in for a sad surprise.

Did JaMarcus Russell start for us last year?
didn’t he play very well in the final 6 weeks of the year?
Isn’t he going into his second year as a starter?
This is a very young QB who’s getting his game together and he has a long way to go and they’re getting the weapons around him that all QB’s need to be successful..
There are some things we are all concerned about as far as his development but the coaches seem t be fine with his develpment so far. Untill they stat to be concerned that maybe Russell is not the guy. I for one wont be.
As for most in here it’s business as usual overeact whine and complain about evrything everytime you get the chance.
It’s MAY minicamp, get a grip. They were in QB school now he’s trying to put theory to practice. It should look rough at first. But from what I’m reading it’s streaky with Garcia and Russell . Garcia is struggling worse than Russell but only Russell’s struggles are note worthy and that makes sense, he’s our future. But for cryin’ out loud you’d think he doesn’t complete a pass based on some comments.
I really don’t expect to see a rhythmic passing attack until maybe midseason. By the end of next season we should really start to see Russell take off.
Until then what you saw the final parts of last season should be the norm most of next year and the he should start to have a higher degree of consistency.
You saw that with Cutler and it’s what you see with most young starting QB’s. I’ve said it many times it takes roughly 30 starts for a QB start playing well consistently some longer.
Most great QB’s became great in their 5th season of consistent starts. That doesn’t mean you can win and win big as a team. It just means for him to really play at a high level consistently he’ll probably be in his 5th year of starting. Donovan McNabb is the player I compare Russell to the most and that’s how I see the kid.
He’s in his 17th start and on schedule IMO. Donovan was very eratic at that point but the won the NFL East in his second year as a starter. I see Russell and the Raiders the same way.
May 9th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
I heard some very encouraging tthgings about the defense and Cable reiterated them in his press conference. I’m hoping it comes to fruition that the defense will resemble old defenses of the past when we took it to the opponent rather than sit back in exotic zones hoping to fool someone.
So we’ll see.

this guy takes his pet gorrilla to the golf course.
He bets another golfer $50 bucks his gorrilla can beat him in a round of golf.
The other golfer says you’re on!!!
So the golfer tee’s it up and smashes the ball 350 yards right down the center of the fair-way,a beauty of a shot.
The gorrilla tee’s it up and BAM,the ball travels 520 yards and lands 2 feet from the cup.
Well the golfer knows he is beat so he hands over the $50 bucks and says;just out of curiosity how does your gorrilla putt???
The guy says “The same as he drives”!!! Moral of story???
Looks like we have a QB that can throw it a mile, but cant complete the short pass

Man I hope Jmac can over come this but… You would think he already would know how 2 throw a short pass.
Many times last year a drive stalled b/c he couldnt throw a short pass.He got 30 mill and he acts like he dont give -a-sh!t
Its ALL HIS FAULT 4 holding out,he dont practice in the off-season,he flaunts his wealth:White Rolls Royce, white mink-stole and planet size bling.I 4 1 am sick of this punks sh!t!!!
Put up this year Jablubber Jablingus or get the FUKK-OUT punk

4eva you’re shot out of the cannon I love it it’s early but if jruss struggles throwing short passes with no contact damn , we have dmac and bush to great pass catching rb and they could be are 2 greatest weapons and would save jruss a ton of times from getting sacked . I hate garcia so much it always bites me right in the azz watch him get his chance and shine and lead us into the playoffs.

– Cable and JaMarcus Russell made reference to how well the quarterback was throwing earlier in the practice before being erratic late (most of the on-target passes came against no defense at all).
Russell is unconcerned and said he is pleased with his progress.
“I have guys who are new targets for the ball. I try to put the ball in great places to give the team a chance to catch it,” Russell said. “THATS WHAT WE GOT PRACTICE FOR.”
———
4eva….Just chill, we got this
May 10th, 2009 at 5:00 am
I was reading priestj it takes every qb 5yrs to get great somebody tell that to ryan, brady, manning, big ben, marino
May 10th, 2009 at 5:10 am
Well you know I’m 4 Jmac all the way but…
He shot himself in the foot by holding out,he has put himself in the bulls-eye.
Its just that normal growing up,you would automatically be able 2 hit a short pass.Even the last 2 games recievers had 2 jump or stretch 4 da ball.I mean COME-ON!!!
It has been stated B4 he held out 4 all he could get b/c he already knew it would prolly be his only one.Man you guys he’s starting 2 scare me.Never saw an arm like his,all the up-side in the world so one would think a short pass IN STRIDE 2 the reciever would be as normal as,as,eating a doughnut =)
May 10th, 2009 at 5:19 am
I just dont think I could stand another double-digit loss season.Go out and shoot-up the town or something crazy. And I hope I’m wrong but Jmac just dosent seem 2 take this as serious as he should.Man pay me 1 mill and I’d work my fingers to the bone or do whatever it took, like moving in with my O-line or WR’s.Or hell with all that cash rent an island and
PRACTICE…PRACTICE…PRACTICE
May 10th, 2009 at 5:21 am
Man Garcia has got 2 be thinking “This is gonna be EASY”
May 10th, 2009 at 5:27 am
so you think the 10 15 passes reported are the only ones JaMarcus threw in four sessions?
well then you make sense…..
CC mentioned the improved footwork and timing of the passes which indicates they are working on the fumbles Russell committed last year by holding on the the ball a second too long you remember?
and then you read about the WR coach correcting JLHs route on another sentence.
its practice in may man and the defenders are all fresh in shorts and run support is just being in front of the pulling guard on tape.
May 10th, 2009 at 5:46 am
well I guess you guys are right,it’s only May.Its just Ryan and Flacco dont have these problems. These guys came 2 play not hold out.Oh-well its only May
May 10th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Before anyone jumps off a bridge, be aware that Jerry is very diligent about pointing out the times when JaMarcus throws incomplete passes. He is also loath to miss an opportunity to describe a bad pass in detail.
As CSTS points out, JaMarcus threw a whole lot more than ten or fifteen passes during the last two days.
Don’t panic, folks. It’s just Jerry being Jerry.
May 10th, 2009 at 5:52 am

JRuss is on targer more often than not. He will still have his 60% completion rate, which means, yes there will be some incompletions.
Plenty of examples of him being spot on target. Chaz, DHB, and Murphy are all very tall WRs with speed. JRuss is going to try different places to put the ball so that only they can catch it. That’s going to take a minute to get right.
As long as he’s not throwing picks, I’m cool!
May 10th, 2009 at 7:09 am

Why are some of us are so down on JR esp you 4evaraider? He’s a new QB, its the first mini-camp and he finished well last year. What drag up his hold out the year before is beyond me.
I think we are in an OK place and that’s fine. Doing decent stuff, focussing on the basics is what we need. JR is going to come on massive this year with Garcia behind him. Brilliant plan by Coach cable et al.
Go raiders – keep the faith.

Gee DHB dropped passes….what a suprise, Al Davis your an idiot, and Tom Cable your a kiss @ss yes man. Even my 10 year old daughter knew the Raiders screwed up big time in the draft….Next negative story will be on Mitchell.
May 10th, 2009 at 7:40 am
….David White reported yesterday that Chubbustus is still as scatterarmed as ever, and that he was also underwhelmed by Heyward-Bey’s ability to catch the ball…
When either New England , Indy or other competent teams have passing drills, I understand that drops are rare…
I have been quietly reading here recently that Priesttj has been unfairly labeling those not blindly praising Chubbustus as racists….
Consequently,I,( who also voted for Obama), am glad he has pointed out what he perceives as sililarities between Donovan McNabb’s and Chubbustus’ development.
If Donovan McNabb was as woefully inaccurate on anything but check-downs as Chubbustus as thus far demonstrated , I’d bet my house that on HIS off days, McNabb would be working his arse off to correct the problem…
Further, It isn’t often that the “stoner” character,(as portrayed by Sean Penn in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”), suddenly reverts his course of conduct and suddenly challenges Steven Hawking for his dept chair seat…
If Chubbustus would simply show the dedication that he is really trying to compete with the Tom Brady’s , Peyton Manning’s and Donovan McNabb’s of the world as a function of his visably BEING THERE AFTER HOURS,( conditioning, working on fundamentals, studying)….a la Rich Gannon…. I , for one, would be far more willing to accept Chubbustus’inappropiate gaudy attire and laid back demeanor….
May 10th, 2009 at 7:40 am

And you don’t understand why some people consider that biased (I won’t say racist) commentary?
May 10th, 2009 at 7:47 am
he gets No slack from me;he held out,now he gets what he deserves, imo
Imo he is not motivated
He already took the money. If he dont produce this year,do you think he should take a 27 million pay-cut like the donkey???
And thats a HUGE part of all this belly-aching by me: The donkey’s secret surgery and all the cancer that came with him.And Jmac is fat and still cant throw the touch pass,tip-toes to the water-keg and he just looks plain-lazy 2 me.
If jablubber jablingus had HALF of Fargas’s work ethic,I wouldnt bitch
May 10th, 2009 at 7:49 am
The fact that you are letting non football related stuff impact your judgement on Russell is baffling!
The guy finished the season strong. 60% completion rate, high QB rating, low INTs …. in his first 16 games for crying out loud.
His OTs have been upgraded, and more weapons are available to him, yet he is not on track, in your opinion?
My goodness, I surely hope you guys put in the effort at your job that you expect of JRuss.
May 10th, 2009 at 7:56 am
He held out?
He took the $?
He’s fat?
Looks lazy?
LOL, 4eva … C’mon man, what are you talking about?

Geeze!

Who took a 27 million $ paycut, and what does that have to do with JRuss?
He “took” the money?????? – WTF does that mean?
Why are you so worried about other people’s $?
May 10th, 2009 at 8:03 am
I dunno Jhill, his real rookie year he stood by and watched the season and team go down the drain.Where’s his pride in the team that drafted him.He reminds me of John “I wont play 4 the colts”Elway.hated Elway his whole career and still do.Terry Bradshaw went to a 1-13 stealers team, didnt complain and was happy as a pig in slop 2 be there.Hated Bradshaw his whole career BUT I ALWAYS HAD THE RESPECT 4 HIM.Jabling stood there and watched his teammates fight tooth and claw 4 a losing record and wouldnt budge untill HIS money was right. At least the donkey offered 2 give it back
I dont know,I was sooo happy when we drafted him,I wish he was as happy 2B here
May 10th, 2009 at 8:10 am
In my eyes he dont work hard enough…
Cable called him out about being the face of the organization. One would think he would ALREADY understand this.
Walker hasnt produced and took a big pay-cut,I wonder if Jmac would do the same, you know restructure so others could stay on the team
May 10th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Yes I still believe he can be one of the best ever, but he gonna have 2 want it.As of now I cant tell
May 10th, 2009 at 8:12 am
yes russell held out his rookie season.but kiffen should have started playing him sooner.
May 10th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Even though he has been at the facility working sense the end of the season? What you want him to come in at 6am on his off day instead of 10 am?
May 10th, 2009 at 8:17 am
And it’s not that I care how much he makes, its not my money,it’s that with 30mill maybe we could’ve got a WR like C.Johnson,at DT like Ngata and a couple of F/A
May 10th, 2009 at 8:25 am
this doesn’t sound encouraging at all. Russell can blame the rust on May all he wants but the reality is he was having problems with mid range accuracy, touch, and an overall diversity in his throwing arsenal last year. It doesn’t appear that he has done anything on his own to develop.
May 10th, 2009 at 8:26 am
I want him 2 do whatever it takes 2 make his passes accurate. He been playing QB his whole life.
Well he did progress at the end of last season I just thought he could pick it up and be better 1st day of camp than last camp
May 10th, 2009 at 8:27 am
my sentiments EXACTLY I Dress In Black
May 10th, 2009 at 8:31 am
It doesn’t appear that he has done anything on his own to develop
It seems 2 me he just dont care
I’m willing 2 bet every poster on this site would have taken it upon themselves and worked ALL OFF-SEASON 4 the organization 2 correct this.
Square 1 anyone???

Being gifted can only take you so far at some point you reach a level that in order to improve you need to work hard just like everyone else
I would just like to see more of a demonstration of commitment from him.
Some examples might be:
Show up to camp 30 pounds lighter
Hire a personal QB coach to help with your footwork (Tom Brady did this)
Make a statement to the media that you have been throwing balls in the backyard 8 hours a day to improve
Perhaps acknowledge that you are looking forward to working with Garcia and learning from him (if he has said this and I missed it, I take it back)
May 10th, 2009 at 8:38 am
and the Ravens went 2 the play-offs with Ngata

Matt Ryan had started more games at the college level than JR had started college/nfl combined. There is a lot to be said about that type of experience.
It will be interesting to watch if that really matters with Sanchez in NY as he only started a total of 16 games for USC

So is Tommy Kelly headed to the Pro-Bowl…is Schilens on his way to the HOF?

Its good to hear that Kelly seems to be going at it with extra energy. However, the Raiders are installing a new offense and are re-teaching the defense. They are also trying to mesh together a new football team with the draft picks, free agents and new coaches.
The thing I want to hear from camp is that they are all participating. To me the biggest disappointment thus far has been Javon Walker and Arman Shields.

I have read your comments on this blog and you usually have positive thoughts, and some optimisim.
Your comments in here today have a whiny, perspective due to a May mini-camp. I would figure you could see the information being reported is all negative, based on a reporter, who is just reporting what he sees.
Are their missed passes, drops and confusion, there are. This is the time to become familiar with our new offense, terminology, and players.
The media has only one spin, negative and you are buying it hook line and sinker.
The Jamarcus weight issue has been commented on way to much, with some comments in this blog for his weight, and they saw him and he looks so out of shape. Bill Williamson in his AFC west blog says he thought Jamarcus looked in good shape, this was Friday, and yet we have different opinions on his shape.
Get a grip fellas, this is practice, have a good Mother’s day and chill.

#14(in yards)–Ben Roethlisberger (27), 281 of 469, 59.9% for 3,301, 206.3 per game with 17 TDs and 15 INTs, 46 Sacks. 80.1 QB rating.
#13–Matt Ryan(23), 434 att, 3440 yards, 61%, 215 per game with 16 TDs and 11 picks, 17 sacks and a 87 rating.
#20–Joe Flacco(24), 428 att, 2971 yards, 60%, 185 yards per game with 14 TDs and 12 INTs, 32 sacks committed, good for a 80.3 rating
#26–JaMarcus Russell (23), 198 of 368, 53.8% for 2,423, 161.5 per game with 13 TDs, 8 INTs, 38 sacks. 77.1 QB rating.

hes not that far off of the guys that are, rightfully, heralded here statistically anyway. this is the NFL
we are a very young team that got a year older. if we play better overall as a team and evantually start winning, JaMarcus “Antonius” Russell is not gonna be the reason we cant go places…project the aTtemt numbers and hes better then Flacco and Rothlisbooty
we are a 5-11 team and should have more patience with the guys and let the coaches work on identifying and correcting the basic elements of the game such as penaltys, holdings and false starts that they have successfully attacked which where essantial in the late season run. how fast we all forget huh? now if CC can correct two, three of the basics such as tackling, padlevel and accountability on defense, were on our way.
btw, I love the zone-blitz we seem to be implementing on defense.

On the contrary SnB …
Let’s get this out of the way now with Walker and Shields. I have no problem with Murphy, Chaz, and DHB getting most of the reps.
Something that does not surprise me is JLH still getting the routes wrong. Disappointing, but not surprising. Chaz and DHB will start, and I hope/want Murphy to beat out JLH for the #3 WR spot.
May 10th, 2009 at 9:10 am

May 10th, 2009 at 9:17 am
“Ryan and Flacco went to the playoffs as rookies”
Yeah, but Matt Ryan had Roddy White and Michael Jenkins to throw to, they combined for 138 catches and 2159 yards.
Joe Flacco had Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton, they combined for 121 catches and 1732 yards.
Russell’s two leading wide receivers, Curry and JLH, combined for 41 catches and 547 yards.
You can even take out Roddy and Mason, Clayton and Jenkins each produced better numbers by themselves than JLH and Curry combined.
- Not to mention the fact that Russell had to endure a major distraction to start the season, the Davis vs Kiffin fiasco, which also led to 3 different coaches calling the plays, you think Ryan and Flacco would have fared any better?.
May 10th, 2009 at 9:17 am
JHill,
Actually I like your take. Schilens, JLH, DHB and Murphy gettin more reps. You are right…I would have actually preferrred this if given the choice. Although, it would have been nice to see Shields, but no big deal.
Cable said he would like to keep 6 receivers on the roster….Unless there are surprises or there is any cutting bait..it will probably be DHB, Schilens, JLH, Murphy, Walker and Shields

Just tell me what you didn’t like about how JRuss ended the season?
On top of that, what did you expect him to do after the season ended? Get into the facilty and go to work right away, right? He’s done exactly that, so what’s the problem?
His OTs have been upgraded, as have his WRs.
Dmac and Bush will be featured.
What’s the problem?
May 10th, 2009 at 9:33 am
BlackDeath29
That’s my point, why would you have a WR on the team if he can’t play special teams, or is inactive every game.
The Raiders on game day usually carry 4 WR’S, 4 backs,
3 tightends. Your WR,’s the #3 and 4 must play special teams.
The guys who can’t play special teams will not make the roster.
May 10th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Walker informed former coach Lane Kiffin of his decision to retire a week into training camp last season. Kiffin directed Walker to managing general partner Al Davis.
Davis talked Walker out of giving back his $11 million signing bonus and retiring, which Walker offered to do.

Jhill;Even the last 2 games of last year he still couldnt put the ball right on target. That 3rd and 9 to Chaz,it took all of his 6′-4″ frame 2 get the ball,if Bush didnt come alive I dought we win that one. There were games last year where Jmac couldnt hit anyone.I’m saying he needs 2 work harder thats all.He looks out of condition 2 me.
And because we couldnt get a pro-bowl out of him but Miami could, you cant see the embarrassment in that
May 10th, 2009 at 9:45 am
I agree but, with the way he redid his contract I do not think we will cut him because his money is guarenteed. You now Al hates paying people who are not on the roster. Just looking for a silver lineing in this piece.

May 10th, 2009 at 9:51 am
If Grove stays healthy, something he could never do here, and a large part of staying healthy is being conditioned the right way.I said many times we are not in good enough condition. It would prove the fins strength&conditionong program is better than ours and that they could get more out of a player than we do.You dont think Big Al felt a lil embaressment when Marcus ran all over us and scored all those TD’s

Now that the Packers have instituted a new zone blocking system, rumor has it that they are heavily interested in Raider RB Michael Bush. My source tells me that this has given ongoing talks with the Bengals a new wrinkle. An official inside the Packers organization has stated that the Packers are willing to give up a second rounder for the disgruntled Bush and WR Javon Walker. Look for a trade before training camp with either the Bengals or Packers. Stay tuned my friends.

—————————————————-
You can’t compare those two players to us. The Falcons went to the NFC Championship game 3 years before Ryan arrived. Baltimore won 13 games two years before Flaccos arrival. When you take a QB number one overall, it signifies you are NOT a very good team in a lot of areas. Now, if Stafford takes Detroit the playoffs this next year, talk to me then.
May 10th, 2009 at 10:42 am
“Hopefully he can just absorb the knowledge that I’m able to lend to him.”- Jeff Garcia talking about Russell.
The key word there is “hopefully”. It means one of two things. Either Garcia thinks, like Cable, that Russell isn’t “stepping up” or Jeff just plain wants the job. Of course, it could be both.
Russell has an arm as we all know. This year will show whether he is the field general that we need.
He really doesn’t appear to have been working on his deficiences during the offseason.
He should be making that short stuff by now.
As many have pointed out, Snake Stabler didn’t exactly work out during the offseason and yet he did it on the field but Snake really didn’t have deficiencies anyway.
I completely commend his intake of liquid refreshment and his determination to give all members of the opposite sex an equal break.
I was watching again that Mitchell interview with the press. Now here is a motivated individual. This guy is going to work his arse off. Maybe he could be a role model for JR although JR already has Garcia.
You have to wonder though why a guy making $30 million needs a role model.
It’s early days though and Russell played well in the last three games of last year.
He needs to get it together though relative to footwork, reading the opposition, and those short passes.
If he doesn’t we could be seeing M. Vick showing up and that would really p!ss of my now dead Golden Retreiver.
May 10th, 2009 at 10:47 am
I agree J Russ seems as if he hasn’t done anything, he seems far too laid back. That’s the problem with the huge rookie salaries… Now a guy like Sanchez is exactly what’s required at QB….his motivation is incredible!

May 10th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Trading Bush would be a mistake. You can tell that just based on the number of clubs that are willing to trade for him alone.
We need all three backs:Bush, McFadden and Fargas.
If any of the three is expendable it’s Fargas although I hate to say that and I don’t want to see him traded. Fargas is a natural Raider. He tends though to get injured due to his Tora Tora!, test-dummy style of play.
We need McFadden ouside and Bush, spelled by Fargas, going down the middle.
We waited two years for Bush just to get over his injury.
Now have a premium back.
Why trade him?
May 10th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I know all the adversity of last year, but to not score a TD in 16 straight quarters kinda makes you wonder.
May 10th, 2009 at 10:57 am

QB talk from yesterday…
Jeff Garcia: “[Russell] looks to be growing mentally. He looked smooth out there. He had a good approach and did a good job out on the field and that stands from what they asked him to do during the offseason.”.
“I’m not going to shy away if he made a read that maybe was wrong or if he did not make the right decision for some sort of reason. It is something that we can talk about and hopefully he can just absorb the knowledge that I’m able to lend to him.”
JaMarcus Russell: “It is a team sport so you have to be a team player. I have done everything that they have asked me to do to be a leader for my team, being a quarterback and knowing the ropes and what to do to bring everybody together.”
“It’s the same I get out of every single practice, another day of work, having the chance to get out and get better at your profession.”.
Russell said of Garcia: “He brings a lot with his personality. He is a good people person, [with] good people skills both on and off the field.”
Andrew Walter: “JaMarcus is getting a lot better and working real hard and Jeff is a proven veteran and it’s good to have him around.”.

First post here, and man, I just don’t get all the negativity around JR.
Sure, he could do this better, or do that better, but he’s a young developing QB. It’s normally between years 2 and 3 before the light comes on for these young QB’s. Someone mentioned Manning earlier, well Eli’s QB rating in years one and two was 55 and 75, and Peyton in his 1st year threw 28 int’s and had a QB rating of 71.2 as Indy won 5 games!
Elway and Aikman both struggled early on. Rivers didn’t even start until year 3 and I remember Shottenheimer would barely let him throw the ball that year! The rook in Baltimore put up very similar numbers to JR’s on a much better team, with no off field distractions and an above avg receiving corps. Despite that, all you hear around the league is how great Flacco is and how this is a make or break season for JR.
He deserves a 2nd full season before he gets that kind of criticism. Especially since he improved as the season went on last year, despite ALL the BS that went down with the organization.

Watching the press conferences of Mitchell and HB during the minicamp I have to say that I wish that JR had the same kind of drive as those two guys.
They’re both kind of impressive and apparently pretty smart. Whether they make it or not is one thing but I don’t think they’re going to fail because they are not hungry enough.
Cable is really intent on getting talented young guys with the right attitude who want to play not just show up and thank Al for the paycheck.

4eva,
Why you trippin!!! Are you out?? lol
JR will be fine bro.

Thanks M L…. the encouraging news I keep hearing out of camp is Tommy Kelly, could he actually play up to that contract this year?

4eva is not trippin, he just wants to hear some positive news, and who could blame him.
To believe their is positive news from a mini camp would be hysterical. The players are together for the first time in organized activities, since the 2008 season ended, yet they are expected to perform like the season just ended.
The other teams mini camps have the same comments from other media writers. Be concerned , yet temper your bad thoughts, we will improve, it’s takes time, it’s only May.
May 10th, 2009 at 11:45 am
i read the blogs and i am on 4eva’s side.. someone said it takes some qb’s 5 years to come of age….how many qb’s u know become great after 5 years?..remember people,, this guy was 1st pick overall and it seems all we do is make excuses on why he isnt progressing..whether it was training camp etc etc…u can tell me all u want about his stats..but i dont get the feeling this guy can WIN games for us..there is a difference…and with dhb dropping passes…i was so disapointed..i was hoping he would be good..but he cant catch….rick dudley all over again…

RuffRaider:
You make a lot of good points. As part of the Raider Nation though I think were are all sick of waiting for the team to pull it together. Six years of losing is six years too much.
Russell’s development has been a little slow. Kiffin didn’t play him because he said he didn’t know the playbook. With Cable in his second year plays were limited for the same reason.
Compare that with Mitchell who just got here.
When it comes to Russell. You have to say that his development is a little slow. Maybe that has something to do with Kiffin. That’s certainly true in the case of Mario and Chris Johnson.
The guy is very talented. It’s up to him to make it happen
This is the year when we find out about Russell. It’s up to him to show us.
Personally, I’m optimistic that he can do it.

How are you sir?
I think Jerry is hard on JR, and it shows in his reports. IMHO
It’s OTAs!!!

ENGLAND RAIDER
Some stuff on John Marshall.
This is an overview of Marshall’s scheme from scouts inc. and espn, it’s from september 2008:
“Seattle runs a base 4-3 under coordinator John Marshall, with multiple blitz packages designed to harass quarterbacks from every conceivable angle.
There’s an emphasis on zone coverage and speed over size, especially in the front seven. Previously a read-and-react defense, the Seahawks have become very aggressive and now fly to the ball (Marshall is beginning to use more man-to-man coverages in hopes of creating big plays.)
The active linebacker unit is the key to their success, and LB Julian Peterson is a versatile weapon whose explosiveness sets the tone. But Seattle must improve the run defense, which could be difficult given the lack of size up front.”
- I remember their playoff win in january 2008 vs the Redskins, I was impressed with their Defense and they seemed to be all over Redskins QB Tod Collins, so I looked up that game and found the analysis, again, from scouts inc. and espn:
“If you haven’t paid much attention in the Northwest, Seattle has a pretty impressive defensive team led by LDE Patrick Kerney, MLB Lofa Tatupu, OLB Julian Peterson and shutdown corner Marcus Trufant.
Defensive coordinator John Marshall’s game plan was to shut down the Washington running game while overloading the right side with single zone pressure schemes in passing situations that placed a lot of pressure on rookie RT Stephon Heyer.
The Redskins countered by sliding their protection schemes toward Heyer, which forced LT Chris Samuels on an island in one-on-one situations on the backside with either Darryl Tapp or Peterson.
The Seahawks also did a good job in rotating their defensive linemen while aligning at different spots in sub to create mismatches that they exploited with four-man rush schemes.”

Raider O I just hoped Jmac would have took it upon himself 2 better himself by practing every day, with the exception of the passing of his uncle. He should have,as our field general, made JLH,Chaz and whoever come to the park, any park to jump start the 31st passing attack in the nfl but…my bad

East Anglia.
I’ve been hooked since the days of Snake and Blanda coming in to win the game in the last few seconds.
There’s also a Tollworth(Surrey) Raider and a Scottish Raider who comes on here(with real detailed analysis) but you meet a lot of Raider fans who don’t know about Jerry’s blog.
We should tell ‘em.
Jerry’s got a family to support.

Raider O
I’m doing great. The blog wants perfection in May, bring it on!
You know really is so funny, the comments in here who crucify the media, for all the Raider bashing and stupid comments, yet some in here parrot those same comments without any knowledge, just hear say or what others are saying.
I guess DHB, will always drop passes until he leaves football, he can catch everything in sight until he drops a pass. I guess Tim Brown drops, or Jerry Rice drops are different.
The body of work, takes time, some in here just want instant gratification.
May 10th, 2009 at 11:56 am
RaiderO,
have you ever looked for that book I mentioned, The Years of Rice and Salt?
To Whom It May Concern,
after having put up with Marc Wilson, Jay Schroeder, Todd Marinovich, Donald Hollas, Vince Evans, Rick Mirer, Wade Wilson, Jeff George, Kerry Collins, Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown, Andrew’s Mom’s Kid, Andre Ware, Marques Tuiasasopo and God only knows how many other re-tread horrors and wasted choices, I am willing to give JRuss years to develop if he needs it as he seems both immensely talented and is working hard at his craft.
I understand that impatience may be regarded as a necessary virtue in this day and age, but in actuality it is not virtuous whatsoever.
May 10th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Jhill,
With all due respect, I remember when Joe Namath donned his white fur coat on the sidelines. Although I STILL don’t think that display was appropiate for him either, it least by THAT point in time in his career, Namath, (unlike Chubbustus), had clearly demonstrated that he had indeed earned the right to swing his Ba**s -perhaps partially measured as a function of HIS gaudy attire…
At this stage of his career,(…perpetual turnstyle Kwame Harris’ non-assistance notwithstanding), given both Chubbustus’ onorous lack of production coupled with questionable dedication and commitment issues
simply invites such critisism …..
This young man is only putting far more pressure on himself by his comportment…
Thus far, two good games and a 60% completion rate on checkdowns shows that he has, thus far, dispite his cannon arm, done nothing other than con “he -of -the -increasingly- heavier -drool- towel” of out thirty million dollars…..

I get really distracted with the draft and OTAs.

May 10th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I’m not saying JR is ahead of schedule by any means England. But his circumstance is what it is, and it’s not entirely his fault. Do I wish he had Jeff Garcia’s work ethic – sure. Do I wish he was zipping his passes all on target during OTA’s, of course.
All I am saying is that he deserves the same amount of patience given all other young QB’s in this league. He DID improve last year, IMO anyway. All I was looking for was improvement out of him last year and I saw it. It was his 1st year under center, heck, I knew he would struggle through most of it. Throw in all the off the field BS, not too mention Kwame protecting his blind side, and I think he did a helluva job!
This year I expect to see more improvement. Do I expect JR to lead us to the playoffs this year, not even close. But 8-8 is reachable, and by the 2nd half I’d really like to see all the young kids on offense starting to click. If they do, it could really be something special (especially if the o-line starts to gel).

May 10th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I think Fargas’ best role would to be our closer. Use Bush in the beginning of the game w/ lots of DMC. Get some big plays down the field with Schillens, DHB, and Higgins in the slot. Miller up the middle on some 3rd and short’s.
Fargas comes in when we’re up by 10 in the 4th qtr. Playing against a beat up, tired out, and confused defense where Fargas’ running style will be effective.

Agreed!
It takes time for an o-line to really develop chemistry and if nothing else, hopefully this unit will be intact for a while. Too bad what should be the starting 5 didn’t get any work together as a unit during this OTA, maybe next time.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Heyward Bey is out and Louis Murphy as well.
Don’t the Raiders’ first OTAs start on the 19th?

where do you guys see jrus talent…were all told how talented he is..but from what ive seen in him playing so far…is someone who doesnt look comfortable out there.no confidence..no fire…whom every once in awhile throws a strong fast completed pass.then were all saying “maybe he is gonna be that good”..then the next 10 passes are nothing to brag about…my patience is running thin on the guy is all im saying..

RuffRaider:
I agree with post#185. His circumstance has something to do with arsehole Kiffin. As I say he’s done a lot better with Cable.
He needs to become the leader of this team though and he hasn’t done that yet. As Cable says, he needs to step up.
We’re going to be much improved this year just based on continuity alone and I think you’e right about 8-8 or even 9-7.
The jury is out on Cable as a play caller but he sure looked a lot better to me than Kiffin and Knap.
There was that one Seabass play of course. The only thing I liked about that was Cable’s reaction to the press crtiicizing him for it.
He said he needed the team to know that he would do anything to win the game.
Some of that is rubbing off because Chaz and JLH definitely had some kamikazi moments in the Tampa Bay game.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Canadianraider,
You patience is running thin on 2nd year starter at QB!!
Patience. lol

May 10th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Mike Mitchell out too. Jeesh.
And Canadian Raider, running out of patience with a guy after one or two years starting is not a good idea. Guys tend to start to click around year 2 or 3.

I know it’s the 1st OTA and all, but the defensive scheme is sounding more aggressive than it’s been in years.
Sounds like what Bob Marley posted @ 175:
“Seattle runs a base 4-3 under coordinator John Marshall, with multiple blitz packages designed to harass quarterbacks from every conceivable angle”.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Oh No Kalif do not do Kwaaaaaameeeeeee
May 10th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
CanadianRaider, Eli Manning did. And he was getting booed off the field.
I’m not counting Russell as being a third year player, this will be his second full year starting.
Also I know Elway was terrible during his first year. I’m sure others know more about this than I do.
I’ve just heard many, many times that a QB will start to make jumps in his third year or so.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Also Jay Cutler.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

May 10th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Aikman only won one game his first season. I could be wrong, but I thought that’s what set-up the Emmit pick. His first few seasons he had like twice as many INT’s as TD’s. He was terrible – and if I’m not mistaken, he was also a No. 1 overall pick.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
For what is worth…
Boise State TE Chris O’Neil is supposed to be 6′3 252 with 4.68 speed, started last season playing well for 4 games but broke his leg and missed the rest of the season.
Din’t produce much in College but I’ve read that Sanjay Lal Coached him in High School, that’s probably why he’s out there.
