Brown clarifies radio remarks
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at 10:04 am in Oakland Raiders.
Tim Brown has been in touch with the Raiders and said he plans to issue a statement through his marketing people regarding remarks he made on an Atlanta radio station about how owner Al Davis felt about African-American athletes from Notre Dame.
“ESPN even played audio of the interview and next thing I know they’re saying I said A.D. is a racist,” Brown said in a return phone call Thursday morning.“All I did was say what people said to me after my first practice, some things that came as a shock. I talked about it with my advisors at the time and we determined it was hogwash.”
The following passage created the stir:
“Meeting Al was pretty unique. I found out five or ten minutes after my first practice there that he hated African-American athletes from Notre Dame,” Brown said in an interview with WCCN in Atlanta. “And they literally told me that. They literally told me that because we’re known for using our education more than our athletic ability that he thought that I would be one of these guys that would basically take the money and run. I don’t know if that was a ploy to get me amped up, but it certainly worked.”
Brown stressed that he used the word “they,” and that he never said the comments had come directly from Davis, nor does he believe they came directly from Davis.
During the course of the interview, Brown said he was discussing “crazy things that happened with the Raiders” and that being told after his first practice that Davis didn’t like African-American athletes from Notre Dame stood out in his mind.
Brown acknowledged differences with Davis over the years on various things, but said race was not one of them, noting his hiring practices and affinity for signing players form predominantly black schools in the 1960s.
Within the last two days, Brown said he has talked to “people in the Raiders office” and plans to do so again today.
It doesn’t sound as if Brown believes this will hurt his relationship with Davis.
When discussing first-round draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey, Brown expressed hope that he’d be able to talk and work with the rookie at some point in the future.
Brown admitted he was initially surprised by the selection.
“From all I heard, I thought they’d be looking at (Michael) Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin,” Brown said. “But in researching it and seeing Heyward-Bey’s speed, he does look like someone Al would take a chance on, espeically when taking into account Crabtree’s health.”
Brown, not surprisingly, said he was partial to Maclin.
“The last time they drafted someone that high who could be a receiver and return kicks, it turned out OK,” he said.
UPDATE
The following is a statement released by Brown to sportsradiointerviews.com not long after our phone conversation:
I would like to give some face value to my recent comments on a radio interview: If you read the statement carefully, you will see it says “they said”, not Al Davis said. Early in my career , Al Davis and I may have had some contentious years , but none centered around him being racist.
I am fully aware of the history and Mr. Davis making moves over the years. I lived some of them. I have also seen Mr. Davis do things for his players, African-American players that only those in the Raider family would know.
Please, read or listen to the statement for what it is and not what everyone wants it to be.

RaiderDogg Predictions for now:
- DMac will lead the team in receptions at the season’s half way point.
- Mike Mitchell will have his first concussion by week 5.
- The Raiders will be getting hot just in time for the bye week.
- Chris Johnson will have 2 picks in the season opener causing comparisons to Lester Hayes on national TV.

“an anthem of the soul’s journey for me”
Very well said, I like that. I hope you don’t mind if I use that one in the future.
Clapton/Winwood is a Blind Faith redux of sorts. They will both do their own thing and then come together in the end.
Gov’t Mule is like a heavier, more rocking Allman Brothers. It is Warren Haynes band, who is one of the guitarists from the Brothers…

If memory serves correct, during the period that Tim Brown was a rookie, the Raiders had a promising defensive back; Stacey Toran from Notre Dame. During training camp 1988, Toran lost his life while driving drunk.
Not making excuses for Mr. Davis, but if Tim’s assertions are true, Toran may have been the reason.

Well you know whats funny and sad at the same time?
Is that most of us fans of this team and “amatuers” can probably run a draft better than that old stubbron man Al Davis.
This past draft should make or break the old man IMO. If this past draft class turns out to be solid….then maybe the old man will actually not hire a real personnel man to do a better job than he has until he dies. However if this class doesn’t produce, in two or three years then the old man better get just sit back and be an non meddling owner and hire a freakin REAL personnel man.

Trevor Scott will rack-up double digit sack numbers

I doubt Chaz Schilens wants to give up #81 though …

Timmy said a few things after leaving the Raiders that my hurt his chances of doing anything with the Raiders while Al is there. IMO
May 14th, 2009 at 10:44 am
I watched Tim Brown as an analyst for Fox Sports on a panel with Jay Glazer, Jason Sehorn and Eddie George a few years back. That was a pretty sad bunch. The whole lot of them should have been flushed.
Timmy will probably be a WR coach for the Texans sometime in the near future.
He now lives in DeSoto, Texas.
I would say Cowboys, but Al Davis is best friends with Jerry Jones and would advise him not to bring Tim on board.

Mervyn Fernandez’s son Joe Fernandez was a wide receiver at Fresno State. He’s 5′10″ 180 lbs.
He tried out for the Seahawks in 2007, but didn’t make the final cut.
Here’s his bio from Fresno State:
Will be one of the premier receivers and return specialists in the WAC this season … a speedy wide receiver who has emerged as the team’s go-to guy, leading the team in receptions each of the last two seasons… owns the best hands on the team … a smart player who runs good routes … enter his senior season with more than 100 career receptions, nearly 1,300 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns … needs 10 receptions and 182 yards to break into the Fresno State career top 10 record lists for receptions and receiving yards … played in 37 games in his career … though not always flashy, he always seems to get the job done in a solid fashion … made great strides at the end of his sophomore season and been one of the team most consistent offensive weapons ever since … already graduated and is working toward a master’s degree … is annually a strong candidate for academic awards … Academic All-WAC.

Hey guys, Got a quick question for ya on how the media is overreacting (in my eyes) to anything that DHB does so early on.
Every single DHB article I see seems to make a huge deal of “He dropped three passes on three straight plays on Saturday after having a decent session Friday.”
Did this guy only have 5 pass thrown to him on Saturday? Why was it that big of a deal? It was his first mini-camp.
What do you guys think, was it that big of a deal this early on?
May 14th, 2009 at 11:05 am
Tim Brown is just mad that Al didn’t hand him a front office job.

nahhhh….just the pundits trying to justify there smack talk of our draft…kinda the I told ya so….
they will eat crow!!!!!! 1 mini camp = changing the tire on you Yugo…then going to the nasscar pits…when Practice starts…heck even OTA’s that swhen we will see till then its all speculation….

Braylon Edwards dropped 14 passes from September to December last year and now the Browns are trying to run him out of town. Nobody offered a 1st Round pick for this guy who was a former 3rd overall pick and pro bowler. otherwise he’d be gone.
3 STRAIGHT passes for a guy who was the 1st WR drafted is a big deal to the media because the knocks on him prior to the draft were “questionable hands”. The Raiders said that wasn’t a problem in his private workout. You don’t draft a WR 7th overall with questionable hands. thats what the 3rd & 4th round is for. the media toward the Raiders is negative for the most part. If DHB has a 60 catch, 1000 yard, 10 TD season as a rookie with 10 or more drops they’ll be calling him a bust right out of the gate. guaranteed

May 14th, 2009 at 11:21 am
How many drops did RO have last year??!!
May 14th, 2009 at 11:21 am
RO is TO, sorry.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Its “media knowledge” that receivers take a couple of years to develop. Why the heck are they expecting DHB to be Larry Fitz on his first practice as a pro?
May 14th, 2009 at 11:23 am
The problem with that though is that the pundits are too slow to realize that a lot goes into a dropped pass. For example, Russell has been throwing to receiver’s feet through out the whole camp. That there is a bigger issue to me than DHB dropping 3 passes. The things they don’t mention are:
- What was the quality of those 3 passes?
- Was the line not holding up, that Russell was rushed to throw the ball early.
- Does DHB not know the routes all that well yet?
A lot of those can be used as excuses, but still are valid excuses this early on.

Zach Miller has Pro-Bowl worthy year
DMAC/Bush become running and receiving threats
Russell’s QB Rating will be in the top half of league
Tyvon Branch and Trevor Scott become significant contributors on defense
Mario Henderson grows into a reliable starter

The O and D lines will make or break the entire year…when the lines played okay the team was competitive last yr.
The running game has to be there from the start and that means starting DMAC and getting Bush carries early
The Raiders also have to throw more screen passes to RBs…
Really, I just hope Russell is not begging Cable to get DMAC or Bush in the game again
May 14th, 2009 at 11:58 am
If Tim Brown could have back peddaled this well when he was playing, he would have made one hell of a great cornerback. I don’t understand why he won’t just shut his pie hole and go away.

I would hope that we could set the bar higher for a #1 pick making the $$$ Russell makes. It’s all about his maturity. If he can get in shape and become a disciplined student of the game, he has great potential. If he remains the kid that barely won the starting job at LSU, he will become another journeyman QB.
May 14th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Ron,
Russell is about one year behind in his development due to contract issues, coaching turnover, playbook turnover and roster turnover. Had the Raiders run a stable organization and taken the right steps to support Russell’s development then I think we could talk about a top 5-10 QB.
But that’s almost impossible for a team with all the issues that it has had over the last 3 years.
Show me a young successfull QB working in such a chaotic environment?
May 14th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
SnB Defense : Bush started one games against the Chargers last year and I’m pretty sure he mustered up something like 48 yards when Fargas & DMC were both hurt …
Chargers D is built to stuff the run. Adrian Peterson ran all over them a few years back because Minny’s o-line was dominant, not because AP was a stud in spite of his lackluster OL. We need our OL to step up to the plate no matter who is lined up at RB.
Russell must be able to complete passes on 3rd down. They will force us to pass the ball and then blitz like crazy. Guys like Carlisle & Green proved they can’t get the job done, yet they are both still projected starters heading into next season. If our plan is to run the ball down their throats and only have JR throw the ball 10-15 times we will lose by at least 3 TD’s. we’re not playing against KC or Denver here. I think DMC, Bush, Miller, Higgins, Schilens & DHB are dangerous if we can get them open in space. If we can’t keep Russell upright or keep him from turning the ball over this game will be yet another embarrassment on national TV. our confidence will be shattered and we’ll lose whatever momentum we thought we gained from winning the last 2 games of the 2008 season.

Ive been at raider games since the L.A raider days my family lived in L.A and we were the only family TIm had in L.a when he came to the Raiders and I watched this guy Bleed silver and Black for 18 yrs when AL DAVIS allowed NORV FREAKING TURNER TO CUT HIM BEFORE THE SEASON EVEN BEGAN.. Warren Sapp only told a small portion of what goes on in Raiderville but Tim has dealt with all that mess and still remained loyal To Al Davis and the organization. At this point I wish Al didnt match his offer to Denver he woud have 2 rings by now.

Third-year wideout Johnnie Lee Higgins thinks Russell is becoming more in-tune with his offense. Higgins sees improvements in Russell’s pre-snap reads and in his overall timing with the offense.
“He is looking more into the defense,” Higgins said on Sunday. “He is talking to us more and we are just getting the timing together.”
“We just want to keep on pushing,” Higgins added. “We ended the year really great and we just have to keep making plays whether you are a receiver, running back, tight end, or quarterback.”

I wish they would have sent Tim Brown to Denver that would mean the Raiders would have kept Shanahan instead of Art Shell and Marty Ball would not have dominated us for a decade, sorry to inform you even if you are his cousin. Tim needs to put up or shut up, help the team or be quiet.
May 14th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
SnB Defense, we dont play a 3-4 or even a hybrid. The NT is really offset center but not a true NT.

i’m glad Russell is working on his timing and learning how to read a defense.
Hackett will help Russell WAY more than DeFillipo ever could …
May 14th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I think Tim wants to help the team, but Al won’t let him in.

Things Raider Fans Might Want to Be Concerned With:
Jeff Garcia Beats Russell on Water Breaks
Garcia runs to get water. Russell walks.
Garcia gets angry whenever he misses a pass. Russell doesn’t.
To me this clearly shows both players’ character, as well as leadership abilities.
Garcia outwardly shows his competitive nature and style of headship. Garcia is a scrapper, and although perfection is unattainable, he works toward that goal.
This is not to say Russell is not a leader, but it’s something that isn’t expressed in his body language. This is partly good because he won’t show any external frustration over bad plays. At the same time, it means outside sources (fans, media, etc.) have no clue where his head is.
He has the same problematic image that Eli Manning had before his Super Bowl season. Without the results to back him up, he seems like a complacent, unproven, and somewhat confused QB with no leadership qualities.
This upcoming season may change that, but for now he’ll have to deal with the unproven label until he shows otherwise.
Even with the Russell concerns, there are still some positives that came out of last weekend.

Great read on all this dysfunction Tim likes to talk about but tries to distance himself from when in fact he helped create it by going to Davis for Shell as HC.

Whats even more insane is that Davis turned around and rehired Shell who then rehired Walsh and the year turned out exactly as this guy predicted lol.

RaiderRockstar post #57,
You are right. The Raiders have to throw more than 15x to win and he has to complete balls on 3rd down.
However, the running game has to be strong early. The Raiders don’t stand a chance if opposing defenses pin their ears back and come after Russell. I don’t think the O-Line is good enough. They need to keep defenses off-balance to be successfull. If defenses sell-out against the run…make them pay over the top….if they sell out against the pass..pound the rock on them.
I don’t think this is a team that is good enough, yet, to dictate the pace or the tone of the game against the good teams.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Russell can brawl with anyone on the team and win most of them, I don’t think there is any lack of respect because of his work ethic or attitude. I’d take Russell over Garcia in a MMA bout anyday.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
RaiderRockstar post 95,
Garcia has been in the pros for almost 20 years. I am sure that when it comes to preparation/practice…he’s probably going to have a head start.
The problem with Garcia is that on game day he’s not very good. He’s here to help Russell prepare and be a good 2nd option in case of injury. Garcia is a big upgrade to Walter.
But as a starter, Garcia doesn’t have it anymore…not that he really ever did. He’s an overachiever with limited skills. Remember, it was Russell and the Raiders play that got Garcia booted off the Bucs and there weren’t any other teams really fighting for his services.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
They tried the 3-4 with Warren Sapp and it was a disaster.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

S&B: I feel the same way. I try to make myself think differently, but I have to be realistic at the same time.
Satele is injured. Carlisle is getting dumped on his can by Tommy Kelly. What is Jamal Williams going to do against these guys? Whatever he wants…
Merriman, Tucker, Phillips, Cooper, Burnett, English, etc. ANY of these guys can rush the passer off the edge
I guess thats where the rookie Myers and Lo Neal come in, but that really limits the offense using 2 TE sets to hit Miller every other passing play
My hope is that Mark Wilson, Paul McQuistan, Marcus Johnson or the rookie Compas can beat out Cooper Carlisle for RG and Barnes or Pears can beat out Green for RT. We need Satele healthy. Wade is done imo.
We’ve seen Carlisle, Green & Wade in the zbs. not all that impressive. I’d like to see what some of these other cats can do …
May 14th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
It can only be a good thing with Garcia around because if Russell looks bad in the opener Davis won’t complain when Cable puts him in.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
I think Pears is the real gem of the group from what I have read and will crack the starting lineup somewhere.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Its fairly obvious that Davis and Cable have surrounded Russell with new players on every front to help him succeed this year and then they will work on the defense next year.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Rockstar,
It’s really about keeping those good defenses off balance. I would guess the good defenses are going to try and shut down the Raider running game. That’s why the Raider offense has to be able to make the defense pay in the air enough to force the defense on its heels. Use screens to the RBs to keep pressure on the LBs. If the Raiders can’t throw the ball effectively, then they won’t win much.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Chucking one 30 yards downfield in a 3 step drop to DHB or Higgins will loosen the defense too.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Garcia is a backup QB. Good for a few games but will be exposed after that. Anyone relying on Garcia will be bitterly disappointed.
Garcia is in the long line of retread veterans…guys like Schroeder, George, Mirer, Wilson, Collins, Culpepper, McCown or greats like Griese, Huard, Frerotte, Kitna and other false hopes who at the end of the day can’t win and have no future upside.

I’d like to see Russell keep winning like the last two games the Raiders played in, I could care less for the rest.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Maybe the real reason they brought Garcia in was to help teach Russell how to better read NFL defenses, ever consider that?
May 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

***
unless they can stuff the run w/o an 8th man down in the box. If Higgins or DHB get jammed at the line and the CB has help from a safety we’re in trouble. one of JR’s problems in accuracy, remember?
we need to get McFadden running down the sideline with blockers in front of him. short, timed passes can stop a defense from blitzing as much. gotta complete those passes though. can’t be throwing at the target’s feet
May 14th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I don’t consider his accuracy an issue and neither do the Texans or the Bucs. If his play is anywhere close or better to the way he played at the end of last year the Raiders could wind up in the hunt for the division title.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
And if you think he is all that lazy and not a leader watch the interception he threw versus the Bucs. The big guy making the touchdown saving tackle 50 yards downfield is Russell.

=======================================================
Running for water? That’s depends on the tone and time of practice. Is it between drills or breaks in practice? That one is not one I would get worked up about.
As for getting angry at oneself…to me yelling and screaming does not necessarily display leadership. Especially after a mistake. In fact in some circles I’ve been taught that can be a sign of bad sportsmanship. Make a mistake in practice? Okay…move on
I think its hard to know what Russell is showing as far as character etc….we are not seeing him in practice…or the training room or the classroom. He’s shown leadership abilities in the way he encourages his teammates and manages the huddle.
Let’s also remember…let’s not confuse the Raiders for the Vikings here. This team has struggled across the board…offense, defense, coaching, ownership etc…and this team has struggled at just about every position with the exception of Nnamdi and Shane Lechler. QB play is not the only issue here…and other positions have impacted the ability of the QB to succeed over the last couple of years.
I say wait and see what happens in September and remember the team did finish the season as a competent football team.

My favorite Raider of all time was Ted Hendricks. He had a knack for being in the right place all the time. His antics aside he was a great player who knew how to play between the lines.
When you needed a punt blocked or a fG blocked he was the player who could elevate his game.
The stork was fun to watch, I haven’t seen a player in 20 years who has grabbed my attention like the stork. Bo came awfully close, so did Matt Millen. What say you out there, who is your favorite.

Frantz Joseph is a MLB, he is a hard hitter, had 150+ tackles his last 2 years at college, but he doesn’t have the speed that Al wants.

Good choices on the players. Reminds me why this blog is so difficult to see all the comments about what we viewed 20 to 25 years ago of our favorite Raider players.
Most of the comments concerning Davis, are from young adults who were born after 1980. They have read, heard about the Raiders. They are hungry for a Championship and I can’t blame them, especially when they get frustrated with Al Davis.
The age difference is a one where those of us have seen the Championships, and yet I want so bad for the young adults to have their time to.
Let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later.

We Raider fans all know that Al Davis was the first owner to have a black head coach, Art Shell, who he promoted from within the organization. Thus, opening the door to further black head coaches.
It only bears repeating because of the garbage the media is making out of the Tim Brown story and comments made to Brown when he first came on board about Al Davis and his take on blacks from Notre Dame.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
On a previous topic about our defense and the new defensive coordinator, Marshall, I didn’t see one comment agreeing with Kiffin’s desire to can the fat ass Ryan.
All you Kiffin haters, have to give Kiffin his kudos on wanting to get rid of a fat loser like Ryan, who destroyed our defense, year after year, with his no blitzing games and his prevent defense which only prevents you from winning. What a loser Ryan was, and Al Davis has to take the blame there big, big time as he kept Ryan and got rid of Kiffin. Nice going Al. Another great move, much like the move to trade Gruden and then have Gruden take the Super Bowl away from us and hand it to Tampa on a silver platter. Wow, you can’t dream up stories like these, someone would call then fiction.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Good nite Raider fans, it appears you all went to sleep, especially after being reminded that Davis trader Gruden and loss the Super Bowl the following year. Beyond tragic.
Thank God for the end on contracts and that Rob freaking Ryan and his fat ass are gone. What a loser he was, and what idiots the Raiders were for keeping this moran around for six-years. Can’t get worst than that…that’s for sure.
Nite, you all.

How are you doing? And yes, it is a Happy Friday…payday too!!!

what do you make of the most recent signings of RB Gary Russell, QB Danny Southwick, WR Samie Parker & TE/FB J.P. Foschi?
May 15th, 2009 at 6:27 am
good morning Dirt Lot, 4eva, NMF & Midwest …
sorry. didn’t mean to be rude
Hwnrdr once was lost, but now is found!
May 15th, 2009 at 6:28 am
I think that they are as of now practice squad/OTA’s Training Camp signings. If one of them breaks the roster in Sept. I’ll be darned. Foschi hasn’t played in what? 4 years? Could be interesting!!! As for the rest, I truthfully have no idea. i’ve been out too long…
May 15th, 2009 at 6:30 am
who would have thought that the Magic & Rockets would take the Celtics & Lakers to 7 games? Not me …
what a HUGE upset that would be if one or both of these teams actually won Game 7!
I’d be all for it actually

I read somewhere that Foschi was out of football in 2007. played as a reserve for the Chiefs last season
can we say “pro bowl potential” ? lol
May 15th, 2009 at 6:34 am
Every new morning brings a fresh hope that Al is one step closer to turning the Raiders over to someone that does not let their ego get in the way of winning. Someone who is smart enough to cut his losses on coaches and players that will not give 100% toward the goal of winning.
May 15th, 2009 at 6:35 am

He was one of five rookies they had on there. the other four were Jason Smith, Knowshon Moreno, Jeremy Maclin and Josh Freeman …

May 15th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Pressed later in the chat by a reader who asked how the Bucs can be successful on offense with players like Luke McCown and Michael Clayton, Sapp snapped back. “Antonio Bryant, Kellen Winslow Jr., Cadillac Williams, Derrick Ward in the backfield,” Sapp said. “Who just won the Super Bowl? Name one offensive lineman on the Pittsburgh Steelers. It isn’t the names, it’s the cameraderie. Stop being a fan, might want to learn something. I actually went to the facility. I don’t read the newspapers.”
***
Warren Sapp is still a Bucs homer. LOL.
He’s always trashing the Raiders, but I’d take Russell, Bush, McFadden, DHB, Schilens and Miller over guys like McCown, Williams, Ward, Clayton, Bryant and Winslow Jr any day of the week!
May 15th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Did Sapp open another can of dumbass on himself?
May 15th, 2009 at 6:53 am
they said on there that DHB was worth the pick. Then asked him why he thought he was the first WR taken. He said he was first off the board because he fits the Raiders offense and what they are trying to accomplish over there. pretty humble guy.
Know Moreno bragged on himself big time about being the first RB taken …
May 15th, 2009 at 6:55 am
RaiderRockstar
Yeah after the Buccs wanted nothing to do with Mr. Big Mouth Sapp. What does he do, he defends the team that dumped him and trashes the team that gave him a second chance. He should have joined Tampa for one day to retire a Bucc.
Big mouth, Big mouth, Big mouth. This guy did nothing for the Raiders!!!!
May 15th, 2009 at 6:58 am
Warren Sapp is still a Bucs homer. LOL.
I remember when Sapp first became a Raider, he said that he is still a Buc but in Silver and Black. From then on I knew that he really wasn’t loyal…
All the stuff that I hear or see from DHB he has been humble, even when everyone was laughing at him going to the Raiders. Hope he pulls through…
May 15th, 2009 at 6:58 am
GREAT LINE RAIDER TW, MR. SAPP DUMPING THAT CAN OF DUMBASS ALL OVER HIMSELF.. LMAO

May 15th, 2009 at 7:00 am
Raiders should have gotten Lynch instead.

May 15th, 2009 at 7:06 am
First of all Sapp is a buffoon. Houston is a tough team and would be giving Denver, Orlando, Cleveland and Boston fits. What the He!! happened to Vujacich and Fisher’s Shot’s? Those guys have been horrible!
May 15th, 2009 at 7:10 am
SEE IF THEY CAN GET SAPP AND TIM BROWN IN THE SAME ROOM,SHOULD GET SOME DRIBBLE OUT OF THAT CONVERSATION…
May 15th, 2009 at 7:10 am
Houston’s pt guard is too fast for Fisher to cover.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:16 am
Aaron Brooks is fast. I watched him at Oregon. Feel myself rooting for Houston b/c they beat my Blazers. Just don’t want Denver to win so who ever has a better chance to beat them is all I want out of the Western finals.

As long as we are counting on Gasoft do defend our basket ….
We’ll probably win game 7, but WTF is Gasoft going to do with Chauncy off the P&R if he can’t handle Brooks?
He’s getting punked by Hayes and Landry ?!?!? LOL, wait until he gets a load of KMart!
May 15th, 2009 at 8:28 am
Well, we can always hope the NBA puts the right officiating crew on the game, lol.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:31 am
lakers need a game 7 to see if they got what it takes to win the title(which is still in question at this point)
May 15th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Gasoft isn’t the only one supposed to be guarding the basket, Bynum is too and again, he had zero blocks.
Ummm, as to K-mart, how well did K-mart handle Gasol in last year’s playoffs? I think even that soft Euro made K-mart his biotch. Billups will win that series for Denver. Billups has always made Fisher his biotch.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:31 am
It’s about time for PJ to retire …
The magic is gone. He benches Sasha, but not Gasoft? The players were ALL OVER Gasoft in the first QTR. I thought Kobe was going to snap his neck. Even PJ said he wasn’t playing hard in the interview, but he kept him out there.
Fisher trying to shoot his way out of his slump in the first qtr was LAUGHABLE!
Just don’t understand all the jumpshots instead of going down low! Oh, that’s right, Gasoft didn’t want the rock and kept throwing it back out.
LMFAO at this team!

May 15th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Bynum can’t even get in the game ….
Scola abused Gasol right off the bat and set the tone of a 17-1 start. That was ALL Scola vs. Gasoft.
Come back down on the other end, throw it to Gasoft. Instead of going to work, instantly kicks it back out. You could clearly see that Gasoft wasn’t up for the fight from the tip. The guards noticed it, and started firing instead of going inside.
When the Lakers are shooting long jumpers instead of pounding it inside, it’s 50-50 at best on the outcome.
Gasoft should be DOMINATING Hayes, right? Causing the Rockets to double, which should open everything up. Like game 5. But Gasoft’s refusal to fight? None of it happens. You’ll need Kobe to get 50.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:39 am

PJs Lakers have NEVER been able to defend the pick and roll … never!
Last year Gasoft had his way with an Allen Iverson led Nuggest team, and I distinctly remember KMart guarding Kobe. I could be wrong on that though.
Regardless, this is a whole different Nuggests team, and Gasoft against Chauncey on the pick n roll will equal a loss for the Lakers in the series.
Take it to the bank!
May 15th, 2009 at 8:45 am
no way hill, lakers are going to win that series, along with the title, besides who is going to run the p&r with billups?

Several players have switched uniform numbers from last year. They include defensive tackle William Joseph going from No. 96 to No. 94, quarterback Bruce Gradkowski freed up No. 7 for fellow quarterback Jeff Garcia and switched to No. 5, running back Louis Rankin let veteran fullback Lorenzo Neal have his No. 41 and assumed No. 40.
Rookie receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey asked for No. 12 so that he could honor the father of a close friend who died recently. That person, Richard Woodlee, “He’s been a father figure to me ever since I was seven,” Heyward-Bey said at the team’s mini camp last weekend. “His high school and college number was 12, so that’s how I came up with that number.”
Heyward-Bey said he intends to keep the number, but only if Davis signs off on the decision.
“I would like to,” Heyward-Bey said, “but Mr. Davis has to say if he’s OK with that.”
Don’t buy your No. 12 Heyward-Bey jerseys just yet.
The league already has made it clear that Heyward-Bey is free to wear the number most often associated with quarterbacks.
The league amended the rule in 2004 to allow receivers to wear uniform numbers aside from those from 80-89. The changed rule added the numbers from 10-19 as options for receivers.

We saw it like it was. I bleed Purple & Gold all day long (well out of my left arm b/c it’s S&B in the rest of my body!) but I will certainly call it like I see it. Don’t talk to me about the refs, or Houston’s “effort”, or home court, or warm up games.
Like Van Gundy said on the telecast, at this point of the season, you are what you are. We have had NO front court toughness since Bynum got hurt, and we are not going to magically get it back with now. Bynum is probably 70% at best. PJ refuses to play Powell and MBenga, so Gasoft it is, and let’s hope we can score 110 pts. That’s the plan.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Former NFL player Solomon Wilcots was asked Thursday which team will be the surprise team in 2009.
“I think a team like the Raiders could surprise people. If you’re talking a shocker like Atlanta was last year, it could be the Raiders. They’ve got an easy schedule and are in a weak division. If they get they’re act together, I guarantee they can start beating people.
“They’ve got talent. And if Jeff Garcia gets to play, they will start winning some games. And they might win with JaMarcus Russell, but I know they aren’t going to lose with Russell, because if they lose with him, they’ll switch to Garcia.” Wilcots said on NFL Network.

Who’s running the pick and roll with Brooks?
The point is once Gasoft steps up above the FT line to take Chaubcey (why they are defending it that way fromt he start is BAFFLING!), who is there to guard the basket?
Carmelo, Nene, and KMart will be open all day!
Then comes JR Swish in the corner for 3.

ESPN’s website has an article discussing DHB as being on the hot seat because he was drafted ahead of Crabtree. I’ll give them that. But if he’s on the hot seat, so is Crabtree IMO. He has to prove that he deserved to be the #1 WR and that he deserved all the hype. I personally hope Crabtree falls flat on his face and gets exposed as a prima donna.

May 15th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I’ll say Chaz will have the best season, and JLH will finish 1st or 2nd on the team with all purpose yards. IMO
May 15th, 2009 at 9:46 am
RR, Miller wll catch the most balls anyway.
May 15th, 2009 at 9:47 am
In all honesty, I don’t see our offense improving that much when compared to last year. I can see maybe a few more TD from Russell and maybe 2-300 more yards, and then maybe Bush & McFadden with 6-700 yards and of course Fargas will have 4-500 yards. If we can finish 7-9 or better, then this season was a success compared to the last 6 years. Anything less is more of the same we have grown used to.
May 15th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Garcia will catch the most to the face.

Agreed. McFadden might even be 2nd in receptions.
Chaz Schilens was BY FAR the best WR in camp according to most reports, but it was only the first mini camp so there is still time for DHB and Murphy to catch up.
Since DHB comes from a pro style offense his transition to the NFL should be easier than Murphy’s, even though Murphy faced tougher competition at Florida. Plus I think Murphy had a knee injury not too long ago. I don’t think Walker will ever return to pro bowl form in Oakland. He might not even make the squad if Holland keeps impressing. I think Higgins will be used mainly on special teams again, barring injuries at the WR position. He does have that ability to take a short pass and make it a long gain though on any given play. plus I like his back flips in the end zone!
May 15th, 2009 at 10:03 am
I say Bush and DMC will both have 1000 yards this season, and DMC will have around 500 yards in catches. Miller will lead the team in catches 70+, and Chaz may get his 1000 yards season. No less than 6-10, and I really think 9-7 can be done!!IMHO
May 15th, 2009 at 10:03 am
sorry for the long train of thought in post #285 with no clear cut answer (err… opinion)
I think Darrius Heyward-Bey will be our most productive WR this season.
I think he’ll surprise many haters and make a big impact this season. He may drop a few easy balls early, but from the bye week on I think he’ll be straight up EXPLOSIVE!
May 15th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Last year, we could have finished at 7-9.
Bills game.
1st charger game.
2nd KC game.
We should have won all 3 games!!!
May 15th, 2009 at 10:08 am
RR,
I don’t agree. I just can’t see the Rookie doing better than Chaz or JLH!!!
May 15th, 2009 at 10:13 am
I like Chaz a lot.
If you look at last year, Chaz wasn’t ready to play. He was in due to him being the best run blocker among WRs. At the end of the season, he was running good routes, and made some nice catches.
I expect more from him now after he had a full season to learn our Offense.
May 15th, 2009 at 10:37 am
I’m gonna have to go with Chaz. Good point about DHB coming from a pro style offense but I still don’t see the rook taking things over in his first year.
Whoever it is, I don’t think his numbers will be very impressive anyway. As mentioned by some of you guys, I see a lot of passes going to Miller and DMC this season.
If DMC can stay healthy, I’m thinking pro bowl for the kid and Raider offensive MVP.

If we can finish 7-9 or better, then this season was a success compared to the last 6 years. Anything less is more of the same we have grown used to.
